July - September 2026
Message from The DEAN
T
he period from July to September 2026 marked a significant moment for the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University. At the AMEE Conference 2026 in Vienna, the Faculty received the 2026 ASPIRE to Excellence Award in the category of Innovative and Inspirational Approaches to Health Professions Education, presented by the International Association for Health Professions Education. This recognition marks the Faculty as the first in Thailand and Asia to receive the award in this category. For us, the significance of this recognition goes beyond the award itself. Rankings measure outcomes, while ASPIRE recognizes how education is designed and delivered. At the heart of this achievement is our Pi-shaped curriculum, founded on the belief that today’s dentists need more than clinical excellence. Alongside strong dental expertise, our students develop a second area of capability that prepares them to respond to the diverse challenges and opportunities of a changing world. This achievement reflects the collective efforts of our teachers, staff, and students who have contributed to shaping and advancing this approach to dental education.
We believe the most meaningful work still lies ahead, and that we will do it best together. Our progress has also been strengthened by continued engagement with partners around the world. Throughout this quarter, we welcomed visiting students and colleagues from partner institutions, advanced our research and student exchange collaborations, and celebrated our graduate students’ achievements at an international symposium. Through BRIDGE 2026, international dental students had the opportunity to learn alongside our students while experiencing both clinical learning and Thai culture. Beyond the Faculty, our mobile dental units continued 2

to extend dental care to children and communities, reinforcing our commitment to connecting education and service with meaningful impact. Looking ahead, November will bring another opportunity for international academic exchange as we welcome colleagues from six leading dental schools across Asia to New Horizons in Oral Healthcare 2026. Under the theme “Empowering and Shaping Tomorrow – Challenges, Opportunities and Collaborative Perspectives,” the event will provide a platform for sharing perspectives, exchanging experiences, and exploring opportunities for future collaboration. As we continue this journey, our direction remains clear: to advance dental education, research, and oral healthcare through meaningful partnerships locally and internationally. The ASPIRE Award is an important recognition of what we have achieved together, while also reminding us that innovation in education is an ongoing journey. We look forward to learning from our partners, building new connections, and creating further opportunities to shape the future of oral healthcare together. Thank you for being part of our journey, and we invite you to explore the stories and achievements featured in this edition of the Faculty Newsletter.

Abstract
A
rtificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in dental education. The present study aimed to examine the current landscape of AI applications in dental education, focusing on their impact on teaching, assessment, and the prediction of academic performance. A literature search was performed based on articles published between November 2014 and March 2026 in the PubMed and Scopus databases. Studies focusing on AI applications in dental education were analysed across the domains:teachingandlearning, assessment, and academic performance prediction. Forty-two publications met the inclusion criteria and were used as the evidential basis for this study. AI integration emphasised fundamental knowledge, use cases, and evaluation in teaching and learning. AI tools such as chatbots, simulations, and generative models enhanced student engagement and learning efficiency while supporting clinical decision-making. AI-assisted tasks, including radiograph interpretation and scientific writing, demonstrated

Assessment of peri-implant bone loss by cone beam computed tomography versus periapical radiography : A systematic review and meta-analysis Nadia Sultana Shuborna BDS, DDS Nikos Mattheos DDS, MASc, PhD Chidsanu Changsiripun DDS, PhD Keskanya Subbalekha DDS, PhD

Journal: The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, Published: August 2026, Volume: 136, Issue: 2
Abstract Statement of problem
Quantitative syntheses for assessing peri-implant marginal bone loss (MBL) of the 2 most frequently used imaging modalities, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and periapical radiography (PR), are lacking.
Purpose
The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of CBCT and PR in detecting peri-implant MBL.
Material and methods
A comprehensive search of the Scopus, PubMed, Cochrane, CINAHL, and ProQuest databases and the nonpeer-reviewed literature was conducted to identify studies comparing CBCT and PR for MBL assessment. A bivariate model pooled sensitivity and specificity to calculate likelihood ratios (LR+ and LR-). Diagnostic precision was reflected by the area under the curve (AUC). Differences in sensitivity, specificity, LR+, LR-, and AUC between CBCT and PR were determined using the Z-test (α=.05).
Results
A total of 483 studies were identified, of which 6 met the inclusion criteria. Of these, 5 were preclinical studies, and 1 was a human cadaver study. CBCT demonstrated a pooled sensitivity of 0.81 and specificity of 0.78, an LR+ of 3.10, and an LR- of 0.24, with an AUC of 0.78. PR showed a sensitivity of 0.79 and specificity of 0.92, LR+ for PR of 4.06 and an LR-for PR of 0.26, with an AUC of 0.80. No significant differences were observed between CBCT and PR in sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratios, or AUC.
Conclusions
Scan QR-Code For Full Publication
Within the limitations of current evidence from animal studies and cadavers, CBCT and PR demonstrated no significant difference in sensitivity, specificity, or diagnostic precision for detecting MBL. These findings suggest that both imaging modalities provide comparable diagnostic accuracy for assessing peri-implant bone changes. www.dent.chula.ac.th

Interview
Prof. Thanaphum Osathanon Associate Dean for Academic and Graduate Affairs, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University
Q : Could you briefly share your academic journey and the milestones that shaped it, from your years leading research and innovation to your current role in academic affairs? A : I qualified with a DDS from Chulalongkorn University and then went on to a PhD in Oral Biology at the University of Washington, supported by an Anandamahidol Scholarship. My interest in research started earlier than that, in my third undergraduate year, when we had to complete a group capstone project. I joined Professor Prasit Pavasant, working on the activation of MMP-2 in inflamed periodontal ligament cells. As you can imagine, taking on cell culture and a range of molecular techniques as a dental student — with lectures and dental laboratory training still to finish — was quite overwhelming. But through the conversations with my supervisor, I found it genuinely intriguing. My questions to him never seemed to end; one answer simply led to the next. At first I did find it tiring, because in those days, if you wanted to read a paper, you had to go to the library and look for the hard copy. Later, though, I came to enjoy the idea that knowledge never ends. You answer one question, and it leads to another, and there is real excitement in discovering something, even something small, or even in confirming what others have already reported. That is what made me passionate about research, and why I decided to pursue a PhD rather than clinical speciality training. After graduating in 2003, I had the opportunity to be appointed as a lecturer at the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University. In my first couple of years as a young staff member, I assisted the then
32

Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Assistant Professor Jenjira Thirawat, in reforming the traditional dental curriculum into a competency-based curriculum — the first competency-based undergraduate dental curriculum in Thailand and South-East Asia. That experience also led me to another passion: dental education. I kept that interest alive after completing my PhD, and later had the chance to work with the Thai Dental Council on dental education matters. Wanting to understand the field more deeply, I undertook further formal training, completed a Master of Education, and was appointed a Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Trainers, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Working and doing research in dental education is another part of my role that I truly enjoy. Looking back, I think it all began with a genuine love of and passion for the field, so I try to foster the same in my students. Not necessarily a passion for research or education in particular, but an eagerness to learn more and a hunger for knowledge — qualities that will serve them well in their dental careers and in lifelong learning. Q : You are among the world’s Top 2% Scientists. How did your international collaborations begin, and what would you tell a researcher hoping to build the same? A : Research really has to begin with collaboration, because none of us can do everything on our own. Each of us has our own expertise and our own strengths, and collaboration brings those strengths together so that the answer to a research question is stronger than anything any one of www.dent.chula.ac.th
us could reach alone. That is true of international partnerships, but I would say local collaboration matters just as much; some of my most productive work has been with colleagues in other departments and other faculties on our own campus. My own collaborations began in a very ordinary way: I simply reached out. If I read work by someone in the same field who had a technique that would strengthen our experimental design or help us close a gap in our knowledge, I wrote to them, explained what we were trying to do, and asked whether they would be interested. There is no secret to it. In my experience the scientific community is genuinely open — most people are eager to collaborate and more than willing to help one another, because that is how knowledge and innovation grow. Likewise, when someone asks for help on something I know a little about, I try to give as much as my time and effort allow. Science grows if we grow together. For a researcher hoping to build the same, I would offer a few honest observations. Be clear about what you bring to the table: collaboration is an exchange rather than a request for a favour, and even an early-career researcher has something to offer — a well-characterised model, a patient cohort, careful hands, or simply a good question. Start small and deliver, because a modest joint project completed properly earns far more trust than an ambitious proposal that quietly stalls. Be present and be patient: go to meetings, ask questions, follow up afterwards, and keep the relationship alive between projects rather than only when you need something. And be generous with data, authorship and credit — in this community, reputation travels quickly, in both directions. As for being among the top 2%, I should be honest: it is a pleasant recognition and I am grateful for it, but I do not think it means a great deal in itself. It is a citation-based metric, and citations measure attention rather than truth or usefulness. Work can be cited heavily because it is fashionable, because it is contested, or simply because the field is a large one, while important work in a smaller or very clinically specific area may attract few citations and still change the way patients are treated. My concern is what happens when we begin to take these numbers too seriously. They can shift a young researcher’s attention from curiosity to scorekeeping. I would much rather be judged on whether the questions were worth asking, whether the answers were sound, and whether anything we found improved care or education. What you see now is the Q : Research careers tend to reward result of several years of steady effort by individual output, yet much of your colleagues across the Faculty, and I am glad work serves the wider community. to be able to say that in public. What shapes that choice? In substance, the recognition came from our Integrated Dental Dual-Degree A : Research usually begins with one’s own Pathways, which moved us away from a interest, because curiosity is personal before single-focus “I-shaped” curriculum towards it is anything else. That interest may serve an integrated “Pi-shaped” (𝝿) model. We mainly oneself, or it may happen to serve did not simply assume that students wanted other people as well; both are legitimate this. We began with a needs assessment; our starting points, and I would not pretend that current dental students expressed strong every project I have taken on was chosen interest in dual-degree options, which with the public in mind. But when a question gave us the confidence to design the that genuinely interests you also turns out pathway properly. The other reason is quite practical: research has little impact if it is never used. Q : Dent Chula recently became the first dental school in Thailand and Asia to receive the ASPIRE to Excellence Award in Innovative and Inspirational Approaches to Health Professions Education. What made that possible? A : First of all, this is not my personal award; it is the work of a great many people. The educational track was first initiated by the previous Associate Dean for Academic
Q : How do you support faculty members and students so that research and teaching strengthen each other? A : These two only compete for time if we treat them as separate jobs. For me the laboratory is the best classroom I have, because it shows students something a lecture theatre cannot: how knowledge is actually made — untidy, uncertain, and revised again and again. Research keeps my teaching www.dent.chula.ac.th
current and honest, and teaching forces me to be able to explain why something matters, not just what the finding was. For students, that means bringing them into real projects early, letting them see the failed experiments as well as the published ones, and being available for the small conversations or via instant message where most of the learning actually happens. For faculty members, it means practical things: protected time, help with grant applications and ethics submissions, connecting colleagues who ought to be working together, and treating educational scholarship as genuine research rather than as an administrative extra. I also try to be realistic. Not everyone can carry a heavy research load and a heavy teaching load at the same time, and at different stages of a career the balance will legitimately shift. What I hope for is that whichever a colleague is doing at a given moment, it feeds the other — that the questions from the clinic and the classroom find their way into research and that what we learn in research finds its way back to our students. Q : How do you envision the role of Dent Chula in shaping the future of oral health research, education and policy in Asia and globally? A : I would rather not answer in the language of ambition, because every school says it wants to be a leader and to meet international standards. What I hope for Dent Chula is something more specific: that we are useful. This year we were ranked 32nd in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for Dentistry, which is certainly an achievement and one the Faculty can be proud of. But the number is not the success. The real question is what we look at when we turn back to our own school: how we make this sustainable — academically, but also in terms of the supporting infrastructure and the financing behind it. Asia carries a large share of the world’s untreated oral disease, yet much of the evidence guiding our practice still comes from populations quite different from our own. Work in genetics and precision dentistry has made that point rather clearly. So if our research answers the questions that matter here — an ageing population, limited access to care, the conditions we actually see in our clinics — the wider relevance tends to follow on its own. In the end, institutions do not shape the future by announcing that they will. They do it by producing graduates and evidence that other people find worth borrowing. July - September 2026
