Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra was founded during the
administration of Professor Emeritus Dr. Kasem Suwanakul with a budget allocated from 1988 university revenue. The debut concert was given as part of
the university’s 73rd anniversary. In 1990, under the administration of Professor Emeritus Dr. Charas Suwanwela, the late Princess Galyani Vadhana presided over the orchestra concert and accepted the orchestra under her royal patronage.
The operational budget for the orchestra in the early years was supported by
Bangkok Bank until 1997, when Professor Emeritus Dr. Tianchai Kirananda added
the orchestra as one of the activities funded by Funds for Art and Cultural
Preservation of the university. Subsequently, in 1998 Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra was operated by Office of Art and Cultural Management in
accordance to the university’s mission to increase the visibility of Western music
activities of the university in the international level. The symphony orchestra committee was appointed to drive the orchestra to the university’s goal. Associate Professor Colonel Choochart Pitaksakorn, National Artist in

Program Notes
Maha Chulalongkorn
“Maha Chulalongkorn" is the first royal
composition by His Majesty the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX), which serves as
the
official
anthem
of
Chulalongkorn
University. His Majesty composed the melody and graciously bestowed it upon the university.
Subsequently, Thanphuying Somroj Swasdikul na
Ayudhya and Mr. Suporn Pholcheewin were commissioned to write the lyrics. His Majesty masterfully incorporated a pentatonic scale—a scale consisting of only five notes—subtly weaving and deeply intertwining it within the piece. This artistic
approach infuses the anthem with an Eastern essence, while simultaneously maintaining a majestic Western melody.
Sweet Word "Sweet Words" (Kham Wan) is the 10th royal musical composition by His
Majesty the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, composed on Sunday, February 13, 1949. His Majesty graciously asked His Royal Highness Prince Chakrabandh Pensiri to write
both the Thai and English lyrics. The version you will hear tonight is a symphonic
arrangement that transforms the exceptionally sweet melody into a bright and captivating orchestral performance, beautifully arranged by M.L. Usni Pramoj.
The Heart of the Kingdom
October 13th of each year marks not only the anniversary of the passing of His
Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (King Rama IX), but also a day when the
hearts of the entire Thai nation unite in profound remembrance of our deeply beloved monarch. No matter how much time passes, the divine grace, boundless
benevolence, and enduring teachings of the 'Great Artist' remain firmly enshrined
within us, continuously guiding our lives. As loyal subjects, we proudly present the musical piece“The Heart of the Kingdom”(Duang Jai Phaen Din) as a tribute of our
unswerving loyalty, channeling melodies of remembrance from the very depths of
every Thai heart. We humbly offer our deepest gratitude for His Majesty's infinite and immeasurable grace.

Krung Kao - The Ancient Capital This contemporary instrumental piece transports
listeners back to the glorious golden age of Ayutthaya,
the grand capital of Siam that flourished for over four centuries. Rather than reflecting upon the ruined
fragments or the melancholic silence of today's ancient bricks, "Old City" carries the audience back into a
vibrant past—an era when the kingdom was blessed
with peace, prosperity, and cultural solidarity. The music unfolds with majesty,
power, and solemnity, maintaining a deliberate yet profoundly commanding tempo throughout.
Lao Kham Hom
"Lao Kham Hom" is one of the most exquisite and celebrated masterpieces in
traditional Thai classical music under the "Lao dialect" style (Samniang Lao). The song originated from an improvisation during a traditional "Sakawa" poetry contest by Ja Khom, a renowned vocalist of the era. Intrigued by its beautiful melody, Phraya
Prasan Duriyasap (Plaek Prasansap), the Master of the Royal Piphat Ensemble during the reign of King Rama VI, formally codified the musical structure for classical
ensembles. Characterized by its long, flowing vocal ornamentations (Aeon) and gentle rhythm, the piece is regarded as an exceptionally challenging test of a vocalist's breath control and emotional expression.
Srinuan
As an ancient piece dating back to the Ayutthaya or early Rattanakosin period,
the original composer remains unknown, as it was initially a traditional phat song
(phleng na phat). However, later artists contributed by composing lyrics, expanding
the melody, and choreographing Thai classical dance movements, which established the standardized form performed today. The piece conveys the softness
and grace of a young woman in accordance with the characteristics of a traditional Thai lady, and it is usually followed by a lively coda.
Teur Nor Teur - My Dear This piece is the masterpiece theme song from
the phenomenal historical drama "Love Destiny" (Bupphesanniwat), a magnificent cultural milestone that served as a powerful driving force of Thai Soft
Power. The drama generated a massive cultural wave,
sparking a nationwide and international trend of
wearing traditional Thai attire, while simultaneously revitalizing cultural tourism in the ancient capital of Ayutthaya.
The selection featured in tonight’s concert is "My Dear" (Teur Nor Teur). The
song beautifully and profoundly narrates a story of an enduring love that transcends lifetimes, weaving the destinies of two souls who are bound to be each other's
eternal companion. It speaks to a deep, romantic connection built on mutual devotion and a soulful attachment that no passage of time can diminish.

(Brewing Tea under the Moon) Serving as a cultural bridge, the theme song of the film 'A Letter to Grandma'
masterfully weaves traditional lifestyle with emotional depth. The song beautifully
utilizes 'Chaozhou Kungfu Tea'—an intangible cultural heritage—as a symbol
reflecting family bonds and connections. Through its simple yet powerful melody,
this integration of cultural symbols and deep emotions elevates the piece beyond mere music, seamlessly telling a story through the essence of Chinese culture.
Brewing Tea Under the Moon
Under the full moon, a lonely shadow lights the stove, As time quietly adds another year to my age.
It’s hard enough to find a good family to marry into,
So in the dead of night, I just brew some tea by myself.
Quietly waiting for the finest water to match the perfect
leaves,
While the wind gently blows.
Uncles and aunts are busily pressuring me to marry,
Leaving my heart in disarray, like aimlessly plucking lute
strings.
Under the moon, I ask the flowers, but they do not answer;
Youth and beauty, once gone, will never return.
Even the most brilliant blossoms must eventually wither
The scene only stirs my emotions.
Where are you now, my young man?
and fall—
To whose garden will these falling blossoms finally belong?
I am willing to brew a cup of tea for you first tonight,
Cup after cup.
Where is your heart, my young man?
I am willing to brew a cup of tea for you first in this lifetime,
To whose garden will these falling blossoms finally belong?
Cup after cup.
Myriad of Lights "Myriad of Lights" is a magnificent orchestral
masterpiece from the soundtrack of the global gaming phenomenon "Genshin Impact." Developed and published by miHoYo, this widely acclaimed Action Role-Playing game
captured the hearts of millions worldwide through its
breathtaking anime-style open-world environment and
dynamic elemental combat system.
Composed by the legendary Yu-Peng Chen, the former master composer of
HOYO-MiX known for his genius in blending Western classical orchestration with traditional Chinese instruments, this piece serves as a core musical identity for the game’s annual "Lantern Rite" festival (inspired by China's traditional Lantern Festival).
Bua Khaw (White Lotus) This is a timeless Thai pop song honored as a
national heritage. Composed in 1937, it was featured in the movie “Tan Fai Kao” (Old Embers) by Thai Film Company, one of Thailand’s earliest sound-
on-film movies. The melody of Bua Khaw (White Lotus) uses Western classical music structures and a
pentatonic scale, yet it beautifully captures a
traditional Thai atmosphere. In 1979, the Asian Cultural Centre for UNESCO in Japan
selected it as the 'Song of Asia.' It was then recorded and distributed worldwide as
part of an Asian hits compilation album. For this performance, it will feature an erhu solo accompanied by a Western string ensemble.
Mo Li Hua (Jasmin Flower)
This is one of the most famous and internationally recognized ancient Chinese
folk songs, often regarded as an unofficial 'cultural national anthem.' Passed down since the 18th century during the Qing Dynasty, its roots lie in a traditional folk melody known as the 'Yangzhou Ditty
Ever-Forever This soundtrack from the 2024 Thai blockbuster movie ‘Lahn Ma’ (How to
Make Millions Before Grandma Dies) beautifully conveys the deep emotional bonds
within a Thai-Chinese family. The song has been rearranged for a Chinese instrument ensemble and a Western string orchestra. In its Chinese lyrical version, the song is officially titled Yǒngyuǎn (永远), which means 'forever.' This title mirrors the
meaning of the original Thai track, 'Suay Ngam Samur' (Ever-Forever), suggesting
that while time passes, these profound connections and beautiful memories will remain forever. The Chinese lyrics were written to build upon the movie’s
phenomenal box-office success in China.

Pure as I Am
This is the theme song for the 2026 epic historical romantic-political Chinese
drama series ‘Pursuit of Jade’ (逐玉). Officially titled Qīng Qīng Rú Wǒ (清清如我), which translates to 'As Pure as I am,' the song was crafted by a renowned
songwriting couple. The lyrics depict a story of pure love and devotion. Despite
facing a cruel fate and fierce political warfare within the imperial court, they are ready to dedicate their entire lives to protecting that love and goodness forever.
This land, pure as I am, lightly tinted
Perhaps it was the naive me who quietly
Like an outline reflected in a mirror
Locked my heart and hid you within my soul This moonlight, quiet like me
Its halo reflecting the mottled patterns in my heart
It seems that the flickering flame of love
So faint, allows me to hide in the heart of yours
I pray that our love will stay tightly bound and never part
I am willing to spend my whole life foolishly waiting
Pure as I am, quiet as I am
What do I care if I encounter thorns?
I pray that love is not like grains of sand falling into the vast sea
I would gladly dedicate this lifetime to protecting love
As pure as I am, as tranquil as I am
Why should I seek cause and effect? This moonlight, quiet like me
Its halo reflecting the mottled patterns in my heart It seems that the flickering flame of love
So faint, allows me to hide in the heart of yours
I pray that our love will stay tightly bound and never part
I am willing to spend my whole life foolishly

composed to celebrate the milestone 50th anniversary of Thailand-China diplomatic
relations and to honor Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the
cultural ambassador who has seamlessly connected the hearts of both nations. The melody beautifully harmonizes the unique charms of Thai, Chinese, and Western
classical music, profoundly reflecting a deep-rooted bond: "The relationship between Thailand and China will endure endlessly like flowing waters, remaining as solid and unshakeable as the majestic mountains."
