To celebrate the 109th anniversary of the founding of Chulalongkorn University, the University proudly presents a concert by the Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra under the Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Laung Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra. This concert aims not only at celebrating another important milestone of the University but also promoting the potential and talent of its faculty members, alumni, and current students.
The Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra has been active on the classical music scene in Thailand, having performed concerts on various occasions since 1990. All the musical works presented in these concerts have been carefully chosen for their didactic as well as their aesthetic properties and, more importantly, for the audience’s enjoyment. The musicians have also had the opportunity to learn a great deal from studying, rehearsing, and performing these works.
Supported by a research grant from the National Research Council of Thailand, this new composition Buddha Symphony, premiered this evening, is composed by Associate Professor Dr. Nora-ath Chanklum and performed by over 200 members of the orchestra and chorus, comprising current Chulalongkorn University students, alumni, as well as students from other institutions and the Bangkok music community. The work is conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nora-ath Chanklum, the composer, and the choir is supervised by Natthita Wongprom.

Natthita holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education (B.Ed.) with honors and a master’s degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (M.Ed.) from Chulalongkorn University. She studied choral conducting with Dr. Pawasut Piriyapongrat and has recently received a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting (M.M.) from Portland State University, USA, under the guidance of Dr. Ethan Sperry and Coty Raven Morris. During her teaching assistantship at Portland State University 2021-2023, she was appointed an assistant conductor of Portland State Chamber Choir and the conductor of Portland State University Choir and Portland State Rose Choir.
Natthita has been singing in the choir since she was 9 years old. Her 20 years of choral experience include numerous international tours to choral festivals, cultural exchanges, concerts, and competitions in Asia, Europe, and the USA. Natthita has been an assistant conductor to Sathit Sukchongchaipruek of award-winning Wattana Girls’ Chorus and Wattana Children’s Chorus since 2012, where she has garnered extensive experience working with young voices.
Natthita is currently an adjunct instructor at the Department of Music, Faculty of Humanities, Kasetsart University, an assistant conductor of Wattana Children’s Chorus, Wattana Girls’ Chorus, and Chulalongkorn University Concert Choir, the conductor of Thailand Children’s Choir, and a committee member of Thailand Choral Directors Association.

Nora-ath Chanklum
Nora-ath started his conducting lessons with Richard Hornich at the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, USA. After graduating his master’s degree, he joined the faculty member of the Department of Music, Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University, and Academic Affair at the KPN Music Academy. He furthered his conducting studies with Assistant Professor Col. Choochart Pitaksakorn and regularly received advice on conducting form Dr. Pradhak Pradipasen.
In addition to playing the violin, his major instrument, Nora-ath continues his conducting activities in various kinds of music, including compositions by Aaron Copland, Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, Ottorino Respighi etc. He also conducted and directed Gian Carlo Menotti’s Opera, The Medium.
In 2004, he was awarded a scholarship from Chulalongkorn University to study conducting with Michael Jinbo at the Pierre Monteux School of Conducting, Mains, USA. After having finished the course, he has regularly appeared as conductor with the Chulalongkorn University Symphony Orchestra, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra and also as guest conductor with the National Symphony Orchestra. In 2006 Nora-ath was invited as guest conductor at the Yong Seaw Taw Conservatory, National University of Singapore and also as a jury for the conservatory’s concerto competition. In 2007 his violin solo recording “Tri” was awarded the Best Instrumental Recording by Khom Chud Luek magazine.
Currently, Nora-ath is a resident conductor of Chulalongkorn University Orchestra, and Guest Conductor of the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra (RBSO).
From his dedication and numerous musical activities, Nora-ath was recently awarded the prestigious ‘Silapathorn’ Award for the year 2018.
