The origin of the LOD concept?

LOD is a term that was initiated by AIA, i.e. the American Institute of Architects. 2008 was the year of the instigation. Five levels of detail were then introduced to provide the detailing stage for any 3D BIM model.

Although AIA is the one who deserves credit for the term, the original concept was there. Revit software, which is software for building analysis, has used a similar approach to calculate project costs. They found certain stages in their design process to be most useful. Although this concept has evolved over time and now has six levels, it was created in 2000.
