Grapheme color synesthesia, Kiki Gordon

OR colored grapheme synesthesia is a form of synesthesia in which an individual’s perception of numerals and letters is associated with the experience of colors. Like all forms of synesthesia, grapheme–color synesthesia is involuntary, consistent and memorable. synesthesia: when one sense is activated, anoth- er unrelated sense is activated at the same time. e.g. a sound stimulates an image (sight)

While it is unlikely that any two synesthetes will report the same colors for all letters and numbers, studies of large numbers of synesthetes find that there are some commonalities across letters. It is common that “A” is likely to be red and often synesthetes associate the color blue with the number 3. Note that people affected by graphemecolor synesthesia will not necessarily associate a 3 and the word ‘three’ with the same color, which can certainly be cause for confusion when discussing the condition. Black letters and numbers look black to them in the physical environment, but will nevertheless carry the color connection in their minds when they see or think about those specific letters or numbers.
