FOOLING

hat is a ceramic piece of artwork? A ceramic is any of the various hard, brittle, heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant materials made by shaping and then firing an inorganic, nonmetallic material, such as clay, at a high temperature. Common examples are earthenware, porcelain, and brick.

“I love ceramics with a passion, it’s something that I enjoy as a whole and can put my heart into,” said senior Ryan Nicholson.

This year was his perfect opportunity to go out with a bang in Ceramics class. Nicholson had been in Ceramics every year, only missing out on two different semesters through all four years. It’s not just a class, but a choice for Ryan Nicholson.

“The piece I decided to create is the Red Right Hand of Doom from a comic book character called Hellboy, a comic book character. I like it a lot, it has a very interesting plotline and a powerful message about how you decide your own fate and your destiny. What else gets to pick that for you?”

Nicholson said.

Nicholson wanted to try a larger scale project and he chose to make what inspired him.

It was a challenge Nicholson was willing to face.

Nicholson put in more than six weeks work on the project.

“All that is left to do is glaze, and it will finally be finished. I had an amazing run through making this and don’t regret it,” Nicholson said.

Self expression and Senior Seasons

S

eniors around the school played for their final sports season of high school. Athletes experienced the bittersweet emotions of having their last high school season in their respective sports. Senior Hanna Banfield worked for her first and last track and field season.

“I’ve done cross country for the last three years,” Banfield said.

Although being new to the sport, Banfield pushed herself to new limits for the sport.

“I loved the team for the last three years. I decided to do track because of those people and to get one final run,” Banfield said.

She knew almost all of the team because of cross country. Her final season was very important to her as it wraps up her high school athletic career.

“My senior season has had many ups and downs, but it has gone better than I expected,” Elsa Tritsch said.

Tritsch had been in lacrosse for eight years before this season. Tritsch found that it was one of her favorite lacrosse seasons because of how strong and bonded the team was.

“It’s fun to be able to be a leader and role model to some of the younger girls on the team,” Tritsch said.

Tritsch worked hard over her eight year experience in lacrosse to earn this role and finally get to that point.

“The more we get to the end, the more bittersweet it gets,” Tritsch said. As the end of her final high school season comes closer, she has made the most of it.

Both Hanna Banfield and Elsa Tritsch have worked hard as players of their sport to get to the point where they are. Now everything is paying off, at the start and/or the end of their Conifer High School sports career.

Senior Hanna Banfield joined the track and field high school team her senior year. Joining a sports team as a senior can be difficult but Banfield thinks otherwise.

“Being on a supportive team while also living in the stressful highschool environment is truly what I appreciate most about being on the conifer track and field team,”

LOSING A LOVED ONE “My greatest accomplishment was making my two amazing kids after losing our first born. We lost him at 13 weeks and he didn’t develop a skull.

If we hadn’t lost our first little guy we also wouldn’t have the two amazing little boys we have now. Maverick my youngest is 3 and Jacob is 6. We named our first born Dennis after my grandpa,” said Nicole Burris

SERVING THE SEASON a tennis season to remember

D

espite having a weird year, the tennis team was still filled with cheer. The season was the definition of an emotional rollercoaster. Between the rain and snow, the coaching staff, trying to get new uniforms, and the crazy mixed-up lineup, the 2022 tennis season was all over the place.

However, the team couldn’t have asked for a better season.

“The season has definitely been good, it’s been a little chaotic and inconsistent but I’m really glad that we have a nice coach now and that we get to actually play, it was hard because all of our matches were put into the month of April and we didn’t get too many good practices in, but it was a good season,” freshmen Piper Bartles said.

For many of the girls on the team, this year was their first year playing, but all of the girls powered through and showed themselves

what they are truly capable of.

“I didn’t know anything when I started, I honestly thought it would’ve been a little simpler, but Itennis is a fun hobby and ’ll definitely be continuing it,” sophomore Jade Otero said.

Many of the girls had to make sacrifices for the sport, although that’s to be expected with a lot of sports, especially ones that require extra practice, like tennis.

“My schedule hasn’t really been impacted by tennis because I don’t really do anything after school besides it, but I had to actually quit some dance classes because of the sport but it wasn’t too bad, I do my homework during study hall so managing that isn’t a big deal,” sophomore Maddie Forester said.

Even though most things were unexpected, the overall greatness of the season was for sure expected by all.

IN THE EYES Of MLB Baseball ...but as normal high school students

A

s taking a trip to Coors Feild to play a baseball game may have seemed stressful beforehand; it became a core highschool memory for these baseball players.

The students traveled from Conifer to downtown Denver to play Holy Family on March 28th. The students had Spring Break the week before, but did not stop practicing that week in hopes of winning. The varsity team beat Holy Family 5-1.

“I was so excited to be able to play at Coors Feild. We had a good feeling we would win, because we played them over the summer and won. And there’s no better place to win than in a professional stadium,” junior Luke Dykema said.

Junior Evan Clark led the team in batting average with 0.468, junior Liam Pfrommer-Pease in second with 0.441. Keeping a calm mindset when playing, and working as a team was what pushed the boys to be so successful. Going from a 3-7 season last year to a 8-3 season put a good look on the team and the years to come.

Head coach Spencer Hastings joined the Conifer Baseball team for the 2022 season.

“Spencer can be hard on us at times, but as any coach has to do, is what’s needed. And clearly it has worked for the better. We’re actually winning games now,” sophomore Jackson Kosar said.

Select teams from around Colorado were able to compete against another school in thier leauge. Baseball players goy this great opportunity to start the season off with a win.

Varsity was able to pull out a win at the game and start off on the right foot. The team was just starting the season, as this game didn’t count for thier record yet.

“I love this team, and I love what they have to offer. We act as a team and we play as a team. We have some great potential, and even if we aren’t winning everything, I know we put in all our effort and kept up a good fight,” junior Myles Jordan said.

W

hen the halftime buzzer rang, eyes darted anywhere but to the 11-4 scoreboard.

“Keeping spirits up when the score is low is definitely hard,” Isabel Cloutier, senior said.

Comments from the coaches only appeared to worsen the spirit of the team, as they jogged into starting positions with a quiet cheer.

“When we’re losing, I just remember how much I love my teammates and try to appreciate everything. It’s just hard.” Cloutier said.

But as the game continued defense held strong letting little no shots on goal. And as if a wave had overcome the team, senior Alexandra Gunnufson shot off a strong goal. Suddenly one goal turned into two.

“When Lexi scored the sidelines lit up and we all

knew we now stood a chance against Northfield.

Coach told me to go in, cut as many times as possible. I felt like I finally understood what I was doing. I had the confidence and jumped into the game,” Kayla Fuller junior said.

With six minutes remaining in the game Conifer called for a time out. Without hesitation the players sprinted onto the field with a loud cheer.

“I knew at this moment we would have to play harder than we ever had before. I was so proud of our team, despite losing we finally knew how to work together. Putting up nearly 6 goals in 6 minutes was an amazing feeling,” Ella Genender said.

A Great Season For The Books

T

hroughout the varsity and JV season, these boys have not only been playing well together, but they have been getting along greatly.

Especially Liam O’Connor with his varsity team.

“I get along with my team really well. Everyone is like family and we play really well together.” Says O’Connor.

But O’Connor did find someone really special out of the bunch to him throughout playing baseball for conifer. David and him have been friends since they were young and forever have been close.

Playing baseball together is amazing for the both of them because they make the team an even better experience.

Overall I believe that the whole team can agree that this baseball team feels like family.

“They’re always joking around and they pick me up whenever something bad happens. They all just have a great attitude” Jordan Zitcus says.

They all stay strong together and give one hundred percent the minute their clets hit the field.

This hard working and well rounded team have been through many victories together and will continue too in the future.

“This is the best we have done in recent years and we plan on winning the championship”, says Brake.

Our conifer baseball team will continue to work hard.

The girls soccer team learned a lot this season, they will no doubt be a force to reckon with next year.

T

he Conifer Girls Soccer Team had fourteen incoming Freshman this season; the largest turnout in years. Along with the freshman came new skills and personalities that made the season one that will not be forgotten.

“Through my four years at conifer I know that the soccer team has people that I can turn to. The Freshman this year are so awesome and I really like them, they have definitely changed my life for the better. Just being here with this team makes me laugh,” Captain Anastasia Satchell said.

While the team had a tough season each player had their own accomplishments.

The team’s goalkeeper Teagan Eisenring had an

impressive season with an average of 12 saves per game.

She had over 120 saves this season and was ranked #1 in the district, and 3rd in the state.

“I am hoping to be able to play in college, I’ve got a year left so hopefully I’ll be able to get a scholarship,” Eisenring said.

The J.V Team had many accomplishments as well. Sophomore Savannah Schreuder played both Varsity and J.V. Over the course of the season she scored seven goals. “ I am so glad that I got the oppertunity to be apart of this team. All of these girls are kind and so much fun to be around. For me Soccer is my favorite part of the year,” Schreuder said.

O

verall Track and Field is a sport that you have to be very focused for.

“When I start running I have to block everything out and focus on myself, my running, and my breathing.” Junior Shane Wickam said.

Being focused applies throughout the entire sport whether the runner is just starting the race, in the middle of the race, or even watching the other teammates race.

“While I was running I was very focused on my breathing, aware of my surroundings and aware of where my opponents were in relation to me.” Junior Zoe Peesel said. Every event is special and different but they all require intense focus and drive.

Freshman Kate Horneck is brand new

to track and field and loves the season so far.

“For a while I struggled to bring myself to run anything more then the 400 because I believed I couldn’t do it and I just had no motivation but then my coach helped me realize that it was all in my head, all I needed was some self confidence and a little bit of motivation and a whole lot of focus and now I run the 4x800 and I love it. It’s really just all a mental game,” Horneck Said. Field is also a very important part of Track and Field. it takes just as much focus and effort.

“I have been putting alot of time and focus into learning how to do hurdles and improving in that event. “ Junior Ella Johnson said.

in the warm, humid air of the pool of the pool house a lone diver stood on the diving board above the pool. He ran forward springing off the board and launching himself into the air. After flipping through the air, senior Kian Smith sliced into the water, making almost no splash. As he rose to the surface, the judges read out his scores…8, 9.5, 7.5, 9, 8.5, 8. Everyone in the pool applauded, as Smith won yet another meet.

“That really helped me grow and learn techniques that are essential to diving,” because of all that work, Smith says “I placed 5th in state. This year I plan on going for the state title. I’ve realized how big diving has been in my life and if I’m going to end my diving career in high school, then I wanna win it all.” Smith has excelled in diving, and has been ranked as one of the best divers in the county and state.

“For the last four years diving has been really important to me.

After I had to retire from gymnastics due to injuries it was hard for me to find a sport that translated the same skills, that was until I was introduced to diving, Smith said, “my freshman year I was recruited by my dive coach after finishing coaching his son in gymnastics. He explained to me the benefits of diving, and how it would work with my injuries. My first year I placed second in the league, so I decided to take it further and started club dive practice.”

Despite only having two people from Conifer on the team this year, the boys swim and dive team made a splash as always.

Senior diver Kian Smith and Freshman swimmer Trevor Bowman both competed on the Evergreen team because Conifer did not have enough kids for a school team this year. Even though they were a small faction on the Evergreen team, both packed a punch this year in their swimming and diving competitions. Photos by l. smith

Despite only starting competitive swimming this year, Bowman has been dominating the lanes.

“I like that our team is great, we have a lot of good athletes, but I’m upset that our seniors are leaving us. Swimming for evergreen, our coaches are really tough it’s made us really dominant throughout everybody in the meet.

The team culture is really nice, everybody’s well respected and it’s a good team. I really look up to a guy on our team named Elliot Summers.

He’s just a really good swimmer and a really good teammate and leader. I love the team so I compete in all like relays, medley relays, Iambic relays, freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke pretty much everything.” Photos by a. miller

IN-N-OUT

Back in the beginning of the year the yearbook staff took a field trip down to the Parker PACE center. This was the annual creativity workshop by Jostens. Our staff came up with a yearbook theme and cover design. While we did this the staff decided to take the book and go chronological which is the first time ever in the history of Conifer. After the adventure at the PACE center a group of kids went to In-N-Out Burger. For a few of them it was the first time ever going. “I had a great time working with Jostens and the theme and book design. Also when we went In-n-Out I really enjoyed the burger for the first time,” said junior Logan Wilson. At this field trip we had a lot of new members join our staff. One of them s freshman Piper Bartels. “I liked being with the graphic designer and seeing what our cover would look like,” said Bartels. photo by l. .yenter
