Letter From The Staff

This year has been a whirlwind of change for Newspaper. We started off the year with a larger staff, new leadership, and plans to completely redesign the publication. We’re ending the year with two fullcolor Newspapers behind us, and now, a magazine.

While the year had its ups and downs, and we had our troubles in discovering our voice as a publication (in fact, we’re still having trouble), the staff was able to create two of the best newspapers the school has seen, completely student-directed. The student-run program gave the staff, which this year was one of our largest, more creative freedom, leading to our first magazine in the history of The Lobo Legend.

Now that the year is coming to a close, we wanted to find a way to maximize the staff ’s creativity and give everyone the opportunity to produce their own magazine spread. This led to a wave of creativity from the staff, with everyone planning, writing, designing their own spreads, and creating their own graphics in Photoshop.

We went for the theme of “Heroes,” exemplifying heroic students and teachers, while also highlighting upcoming student trips, and paying homage to the whirlwind of superhero hype across the world.

Avengers: Endgame is a wonderful culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this magazine serves the same role for The Lobo Legend.

Abby Mae Wheaton is a sophomore at Conifer.

“I did pretty well this season. I definitely did progress and grow. The people we’ve played this season have challenged me, forcing me to step up my game for example being able to return hard serves, etc. Since I am a doubles partner it can be hard switching partners every year. There is always that adjustment period at the beginning of the season, but then is smooth sailing from there. My sister played tennis through high school, so we would always hit in the summer.

I guess I kind of grew a knack for it. I will really miss the girls on the team.”

Sydney Mullins is a sophomore at Conifer.

She is the goalie for the varsity team. “My season has been really good, with only a couple okay games, because it was a challenge jumping from JV to Varsity where the shots are a lot harder. Its challenged me physically because I used to not have a winter sport and jumping into running two miles every week was hard. It has taught me a lot about overcoming mental blocks. I started playing lacrosse when I was nine because I saw my brother playing it in high school at the time.

I didn’t like running so guarding goal was the perfect fit for me.”

Avery Aubin is a sophomore at Conifer who is a varsity swing. “I felt like individually I did really well this season.

As a team we didn’t do amazing, but everyone gave it their best effort and that’s what counts.

We all really came together as a team at the end of the season. I have never played lacrosse before this year, so that has been a challenge so it really made me push my limits physically and mentally. I really enjoy the team aspect of lacrosse, as well as the speed of the game.

The position I mostly play is LSM (Long Stick Middie). When I put in practice time it always pays off in the end.”

Aidan Plaehn is a sophomore at Conifer High School. “I have drastically improved my times versus last year. I run the 110 meter. The coaches have very high expectations for us, and challenge me everyday to be a better runner. I started running because I would see how much fun my friends were having, and I wanted to join in so we all went out for the team freshman year. I am striving to be the team captain senior year, as most seniors are.

Running gives me a sense of freedom, because you can just go and have fun.

I will miss the team a lot when I go to college, as that is my favorite part.”

Alex Ainsworth is a sophomore. ‘I’m very proud of myself because I have improved by a lot since last season. I was also on Varsity last year, and this year I am starting almost every game. I am hoping to play in college. To increase my chances of playing after high school I’ve gone to a couple of recruiting camps, and a couple colleges have been emailing me. Ever since I can remember I’ve always had a bat in my hands. My family loves the game, so I’ve always grown up watching it and playing. In the end all of the practice time I put into it is worth it, because I love the game.”

Parker Terrel is a sophomore at Conifer. “I have done pretty decent this year, a lot better than last year. I usually shoot low 90’s to a 100 on an 18 hole course.

A big challenge in my season was getting new clubs halfway through, it was hard to adjust.

I started playing golf when I was 14 years old.

I started because one of my friends played, and decided to give it a shot. It makes me feel very happy that I can play this sport by myself and succeed at it. I love hitting at the range during practice. I am really trying to get a scholarship to play in college, and have been in contact with Hawaii Pacific Univ.”

Abbey Putz is a sophomore at Conifer. “I have improved since last year for sure. The team is definitely harder than it was last year, but I take it as a learning opportunity and it just helps me improve. I am hoping to continue my soccer journey into college, and play for a club team.

It is something I hope to continue, especially because I have played since I was young, about four or five. I watched my brothers and sisters play it , and it seemed fun so I gave it a go. I love the sport, especially the team aspect of it. Just kicking the ball around is a game in itself. I will miss the team.”

Eric Hartness is a sophomore at Conifer High School. “At the beginning of the season I was a JV starter, and now I am a Varsity starter.

Back when I was on JV it was a lot easier to run around without being tackled and now it is a lot harder. I am also the only underclassmen that goes to Conifer on Varsity, so that can be hard. My rugby journey started in fouth grade, when they were handing out fliers and I was interested. Now I’ve been playing ever since. It is a very long sport, that requires a certain level of toughness, but it is really fun in the end. All of the practice time I put in is worth it in the end.”

SUPER GROUPS OF CONIFER

ABOUT CLUBS...

There are many different student-led groups at Conifer, from DECA and HOSA to NHS and Keep Conifer Green.

Different groups focus on different areas of interest.

There is a group for everyone, and every interest.

HOSA focuses on future healthcare professionals while DECA focuses on future business leaders and entrepreneurs.

The Key Club focuses on serving the community, and the Keep Conifer Green club focuses on preserving the natural beauty of Conifer.

There are also many clubs that focus on the fun aspects

of clubs, such as Trading Card Game Club, which is run by Andrew Sinnock (Sophomore). Who runs 2 clubs and is a member of 6.

The Trading Card Game Club meets on Thursdays after school. The club includes card games such as Pokemon, Yugioh, and Magic The Gathering.

There are also clubs that are dedicated to traveling the world, both while never leaving Conifer, like the World Culture Club, and some clubs for actually traveling the world, such as the Travel Club which is led by Linda Cannon in room A111.

As well as the Travel club, there are clubs that help the community such as the Key Club, which is sponsored by Jessica Frankel in room A028.

Just as superheroes have different groups such as The Avengers for Marvel and The Justice League for DC Comics, Conifer has groups where like minded students can work together on things they are passionate about. Whether that thing is card games, business, hiking, drama, or military history just to name a few.

In order to find out where you find, or join each club, the front office will have a list

of clubs along with rooms, sponsors, and times for each club.

Joining a club is beneficial in four main ways: Being in a club gets you involved with other people and builds the necessary group work skills that you will need in both college and the workplace.

Second, club activities look good on resumes and college applications. They open up scholarship opportunities as well. Thirdly you get involved and make good friends.

Fourth, they can help you decide on a college major which will set you on a career path early.

THE HERO’S JOURNEY

ON THE OPEN SEAS Early in the summer, six students, along with Spanish teacher Julie Doyle, will travel to Costa Rica and take advantage of the opportunity to use their Spanish skills in a real-world setting.

“I will get to apply what I’ve learned through Spanish the last two years, and that will be fun. I also will see a beautiful country with those skills,” sophomore Aramis Pond, who will be attending the trip, said.

The trip will tie in closely to Spanish classes, since many of them focus on foreign culture.

The Costa Rica trip will help students see their cultural learning in action.

“I think it’ll give a lot of cultural education, learning

how other people live, trying new foods, learning more about different environments and nature, that sort of thing,” junior Peter Ashmore, one of the students going on the trip, said.

While many of the students could travel on their own, going through the school may help them see the best sights Costa Rica has to offer - but also will give them a very different travel experience.

“I think it would be a lot of fun to go with friends, because it’s sponsored by the school. I also go on a lot of trips already, on my own or with family, and I think it’s fun to get a different experience in another country,” Ashmore said.

FINDING FISH & FIRE Where Vikings once roamed and pillaged, and where kings and queens once presided over royal palaces, a group of Conifer students will soon be walking the historystrewn streets and forests of Scandinavia.

Led by Spanish teacher Linda Cannon and counselor Kim Spease, a group of history-loving students will be traveling to five Scandinavian countries over the summer: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Estonia. “[The trip] will focus on geography as well as the historical value of the Vikings,” junior Anthony Caliguiri said. “I think it’s going to be really interesting to go and see because it’s a beautiful landscape, and the weather will be nice since we’re going

in the summer.”

The Scandinavia trip, along with other trips the school has hosted, will give students the opportunity to see other cultures and the remnants of other time periods firsthand, rather than just reading about them in a textbook.

“You could stand in the town square and look at five different time periods,” Caliguiri said. “You can’t really do that in the US because everything was built at the same time.”

The trip will serve as more than just an opportunity to see other cultures - it will also allow students to be independent in another country, teaching them responsibility and how to navigate unfamiliar situations and places.

STORMING THE CASTLE Over Spring Break of the 2018-2019 school year, a few students took a school trip to Germany and many surrounding countries. The wide variety of cultures opened students’ eyes to many different walks of life.

“I really liked Budapest. We did a boat ride at night; it was really pretty. I loved seeing all the different cultures, the different foods, that sort of thing,” sophomore Milena Lewis said.

The trip, which was hosted by [teacher], didn’t just make memories. It also had an educational impact on the students.

“We were in a lot of different

countries, so we saw the different languages. I learned a little bit of German, a little bit of Czech, a little bit of Polish.

I think that was probably the best part for me,” Lewis said.

Like the other upcoming school trips, the Germany trip emphasized global connections and taught the students that there is more to the world than their home community.

“We live in Conifer, and it’s kind of like a bubble. There’s not a lot of different cultures and different diversities here.

So, I think is very important to travel, so we know we’re not the only ones out there,” Lewis said.

ABOVE THE CLOUDS Ancient ruins towering above a vibrant, green rainforest. The remnants of the first human civilizations. And guinea pigs on skewers. The iconic country of Peru is next on Conifer’s list of upcoming trips.

Led by World Language teachers Julie Doyle, Linda Cannon, and Susan Bergkamp, around 18 students will be embarking on a trip to Peru during Spring Break of 2020.

“I’ve always wanted to go to Peru; it’s somewhere I’ve never been,” Doyle said. “It’s a Spanish speaking country, so I thought it would be a great experience for the kids. So, I called EF Tours, a company we’ve been using a long time, and just set it up.”

The highlight of the trip will be Peru’s number one tourist

destination, Machu Picchu.

An ancient Incan city that sits on a panoramic hilltop among the Andes Mountains, Machu Picchu is renowned for its beauty and significance in human development.

In addition to Machu Picchu, the group will be exploring many other aspects of Peru’s culture and geography.

“We’ll visit some villages and do some cultural activities,” Doyle said. “We’ll do a class on the native cooking or dancing or crafts, and it’ll be an immersive experience. And, we’re going to eat some really strange stuff, like guinea pig.

It’s on a stick.”

Students will be able to utilize their language skills and have new experiences on one of the biggest school trips yet.

HEROIC TEACHERS At the core of every school is the staff that holds the whole operation together, assisting students and driving the entire school forward throughout the year. Conifer’s teachers stand out among the rest as exceptionally involved, not only in the academic enrichment of the student body but also in the social and personal aspects of their pupils’ lives. They have an amazing impact on everyone at Conifer and will have a legacy of being some of the best teachers the students could have asked for.

OWEN VOLZKE Difficult work and AP classes go hand-in-hand, and the workload of such classes can quickly become overwhelming for some students. Volzke motivates his students to go beyond their expectations, and pushes them to perform their best no matter what the situation. This support leads to classes that are simultaneously challenging and enjoyable.

Additionally, Volzke won the school’s annual Schwartz Leadership Award, granted each year to a teacher that stands out in their ability to motivate students and support them through the turbulent years of high school.

Frankel is a social studies teacher not only committed to her job but also to her students. While Frankel’s class is naturally a step above the rest, her innate ability to easily communicate w her students leads to a more personal experience. These sorts of relationship help foster a more accessible learning experience through personal dialogue.

Trask is a Spanish teacher and a cornerstone of the world language department. Trask’s class is an exciting blend of fun activities and stimulating and interactive assignments. A key feature in her classes is the culture behind the language. Trask’s emphasis on the Spanish and Hispanic culture puts meaning behind learning while providing relatability for something very abstract and new to students.

BEN ANDERSON Anderson is a social studies teacher that brings a lively edge to an otherwise mundane subject. With an abundance of projects and untraditional assignments, Anderson’s class gives fresh energy to students burned out by the monotony of social studies. His students are hardly ever bored, and they leave his class with plenty of inside jokes with their fellow peers.

PHIL DEEDS

Phil Deeds defines a hero as “either people that save someone’s life and put themselves in danger, the greatest kind of heroes are the people who do the right things everyday for themselves and their kids, the ones that go to work, take care of their family, and make sure that the people they love are safe.”

There is no better example of a hero than Conifer’s own, Campus Supervisor, Phil Deeds. Deeds recently spoke to the AP Psychology classes about his most absurd and memorable moments serving in the police force. Deeds was a division chief before he returned to the security force as a Campus Supervisor here at Conifer where he keeps students safe, directs traffic at the end of the day, and keeps students in order.

“Going from my prior profession and coming here to Conifer was really good for me, it was an eye opener. It reminds me of how people that aren’t in the criminal justice system live. When you’re in a profession for 33 years you tend to think that everyone you encounter is like the people you encounter on a daily basis, so coming to Conifer has allowed me to get centered again and restore my faith in people,” Deeds said.

Students and staff alike see Phil as a hero because of the work he does for Conifer on a daily basis.

“Of course I see Phil as a hero; he works with students day in and day out, and that

takes a special type of person,” social studies teacher Owen Volzke said. “Plus, he’s about the friendliest guy I’ve ever met, and he loves space history and I love space history, so what more is there to a hero than that?”

Deeds has worked to keep students safe at Conifer for six years. Countless students consider Phil to be extremely kind, forgiving, and supportive.

“Phil is a hero because he protects us, which is hard to do in this day and age because of all the changes,” junior Alaina Avery said.

Deeds not only keeps students and staff safe; he also acts as a role model and inspires others through his kind actions.

“All good people who are role models, and can inspire others to be as well, are deserving to be heroes, and I think Phil fits that description,” social studies teacher Jessica Frankel said.

Unfortunately, Phil Deeds will be retiring after this school year. He will be missed at Conifer but life is just getting started as Deeds heads into retirement.

“I’m going to do some travelling, spending a lot of time with my grandkids and my wife,” Deeds said.

KAYLEE ZIMMERMAN

YEARBOOK STAFF

EMT classes at Warren Tech are one of the most challenging and competitive classes to get into. However, that wasn’t the case for senior, Kaylee Zimmerman. Being an EMT is no easy task either, having to know exactly what to do in order to save someone’s life all while being under the pressure of a time constraint.

“I want to go into the healthcare field because we all have to work our whole lives but I believe that for me, if I’m able to spend every day of my life saving people, there’s nothing more rewarding than that.

You’re seeing people on the worst days of their lives and some of them are knocking on death’s door but if you can intervene and give them a second chance, nothing feels better. They always seem so terrified and making them

During the 2018-2019 school year the yearbook staff made it a goal to give senior RJ Sampson a braille yearbook. The project was kept on the downlow up until the Rite of Passage ceremony on Friday, May 3rd, where the book was unveiled, and Sampson was called down to the gym floor to receive his very own braille yearbook.

“RJ came up to Thompson four years ago and asked her if she was making a braille yearbook for him, and out of nervousness she said nope, she was not about it, she thought on it and thought on it, made it a goal of hers, and when she brought it up to the staff this year we were all for it. We got together and made podcasts of our voices over the pages so he could put his iPad over the pages it would read it to him

Having the mindset of wanting to help people is a common one, what sets Zimmerman apart is her steps towards achieving that. EMT, Emergency Medical Technician, are emergency responders that are trained to respond quickly to emergency situations.

The challenge of creating the yearbook was already monumental, yet the staff took charge and welcomed the mountainous task of creating a braille yearbook for a student.

KEY CLUB Jessica Frankel, teacher at Conifer High School is the supervisor for the Key Club.

Key Club’s role is “Key Club is a student led high school organization that allows students to grow as individuals and leaders by answering the call to lead and summon the courage to engage and develop the heart to serve,” as described by Frankel.

Conifer has many students interested in Key Club because of the leadership opportunities and the experiences it gives them. Key Club participates in the community to organize events that the community can enjoy.

“It’s really about developing yourself as a leader and helping the community, the other main focus is that it’s student

led, which means my role as key club supervisor really is about supervising and letting the kids organize events that they think will be helpful to the community and or events they are interested in doing.

We have meetings about once a month in friday seminar, they’re usually only about 30 minutes and we talk about current service projects we’re working on. Our main event is putting on the haunted house event for the community in the fall where we make a haunted house in the athletic hall and kids can go through and celebrate Halloween, it’s a good way for the community to hang out together and good for the kids to organize an event like that,” Frankel said.

ENDGAME - A REVIEW

After half of the population was turned to dust by Thanos, the remaining Avengers are left with nothing but

WARNING - SPOILERS

themselves. In order to fix it all, they will have to find a way to bring back the ones who got dusted.

The Avengers time travel to get the stones at certain points in the timeline. They eventually get all of them, but one of the Avengers was sacrificed for the soul stone. 2014 Thanos comes to the year 2023, everyone including the ones who got dusted have a battle against Thanos and his army, and eventually win.

Time traveling is a common thing in some action movies, like Back to the Future, The Terminator, Men in Black, and more, and this movie is no different with it. The Avengers split up into teams to collect the stones,Natasha sacrifices herself to have Clint to collect the soul stone. Tony fails to get the tesseract so Steve and Tony go back to the 1940’s and get the tesseract. They all eventually come back to the current year with all of the stones and make their own Infinity Gauntlet to reverse the snap.

2014 Thanos finds out about what the Avengers are doing

and sends 2014 Nebula undercover to send Thanos’s ship in 2023 and destroys the Avengers headquarters. The dusted heroes come back and fights Thanos and his army.

Tony gets all the stones and snaps which turns Thanos’s army to dust including Thanos. Tony dies and they have a funeral for him. Steve goes back to put the stones back but comes back looking old. Steve gives his shield to Sam Wilson and then it shows Steve back in the 1940’s dancing with Peggy Carter.

The final battle was one of the best moments of the film because it was like a dream come true for a Marvel fan and having a bit of humor during the fights was executed well and didn’t mess up during the final battle. This film is a great way to wrap up the Infinity saga and the past 11 years of MCU films, it’s been a great roster of films and we can’t wait to see what Marvel Studios will bring us next.

IMPACT OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE

The first movie to kick off what would become the Avengers franchise was “Iron Man” in 2008, 11 years ago. The movie made over 318 million dollars at the box office. In the movie, the directors presented a generally bad person, but were able to make audiences fall in love with him. From Tony Stark’s quick wit to his extreme sarcasm, he kicked off one of the most successful movie franchises. Iron Man had two more independent movies, with “Iron Man 2” making the highest profits.

Not too long after the success of the “Iron Man”

movies, Marvel introduced a variety of new characters such as Thor, Captain America, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and eventually, the Avengers. The entire Marvel franchise made about 20.8 billion dollars from their movies. Endgame alone has made over 2.2 billion already. The odd thing is that none of their movies have won a lot of awards or even really stood out in any specific category other than visual effects, but people still gush over them.

Almost every man, woman, and child has their favorite hero, even if they don’t know much about the comics. These

movies set up such a complex network that fans enjoy weaving together theories and wondering what’s going to happen next. Some theories even state that Bucky killed Peter Parker’s parents, while another states that Groot is a god. There are thousands of artworks dedicated to various heroes. People spend so much time on it because they care about the Marvel universe.

The movie “Guardians of the Galaxy” (2014) in particular has been able to give most people nostalgia. This is due to their soundtrack and choice of music throughout the movie.

Parents were able to listen to

songs they use to rock out to, while children got to see a new superhero group come to life.

There is a reason why younger people tend to love the movies and always go to see the newest one. Teenagers and kids, specifically generation Z, grew up with the movies. Watching the movies gives those a sense of nostalgia and in the future, it will bring them back to their childhood days. So as the movies keep coming out, fans will always have new things to look forward to, and still be able to look back at the old movies with a sense of childhood wonder.

SPIDER-MAN VS. SPIDER-MAN

TOBEY MAGUIRE

Andrew Garfield was the oldest Spider-Man, playing Peter Parker at 29 years old.

Though he still managed to look more like a teen then Tobey Maguire, and his acting was great, his greatest downfall was probably how seriously the movies were portrayed.

Some scenes were too emotional to be a kid’s movie.

For example, Uncle Ben’s death scene was well done, but it didn’t really match the boy-ish Peter Parker he was supposed to be. The scene was too serious to see him as the 15 year old he was supposed to be playing.

Although, the movie was a little too serious, it doesn’t reflect on the actors capabilities. Andrew Garfield’s role in “The Amazing SpiderMan” was well done. He brought an attitude that we wouldn’t have expected from Spider-man, and I have to say, I don’t hate the cocky, moody boy he acts like throughout the movie. In my opinion, it makes the movie a little more entertaining.

The only thing I really didn’t like about Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, besides the seriousness of the movies, was “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”. I think we can all agree that the movie just wasn’t good. I give Andrew Garfield 3 stars.

Photo courtesy of Marvel Being the most recent Spider-Man, Tom Holland has gotten a lot of attention.

He is the first one to interact with the avengers, making future movies more possible, and securing Tom Holland to play the part. However, like with the other Spider-Men, there is an age gap that hurts the believability of the movies.

Holland is 22 while Peter Parker is supposed to be 15.

Age seems to be only one of two big problems for Tom Holland though. He gets the personality just right, as well as the attitude. Garfield was too dark and jock-like for the iconic character and Maguire was too childish. Holland got the character just right.

The second problem he faces is lack of a backstory. Both the other actors had a scene about losing their dear uncle Ben. Holland never had that, and it doesn’t help that his Aunt May

seems so young. Uncle Ben is supposed to be a big part of what makes Spider-Man, and yet his movies never included it, or even really mentioned it for that matter. It really damages how he performs as Spider-Man, because we don’t get to see that deeper, more mature version of Spider-Man. There’s a reason he’s 15, he has to be a little immature, but he also had to grow up quickly to be the emotional support to Aunt May. Holland just doesn’t have that experience, and you can tell the movie is lacking that key moment.

Despite the issues with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, he has been the only one to actually act like the character from the comic books. Fans expect great things from him in the future with movies such as “SpiderMan: Far From Home” coming out. I give Tom Holland’s 4 stars.

Tobey Maguire was the Spider-Man that most of us grew up with. Though, that does not mean he was the best. When the first “SpiderMan” movie came out, Tobey Maguire was 27, playing a 15 year old. The look didn’t really match, and it always felt like there was something missing.

His acting left much to be desired, and in all honesty, the only good thing that really came out of Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man was “Spider-Man 2”. I’ll give him credit for being the face of Spider-Man for a long time, but it doesn’t excuse the fact that the acting just wasn’t good. I’m sure he has better movies, but this wasn’t really evident in his work as Spider-Man. He did have a great supporting cast, though.

There’s no denying that he had the best Aunt May and Uncle Ben. This movie actually left room for that relationship to develop, and the audience could see the chemistry between the actors. Whereas, Andrew Garfield’s relationship with Uncle Ben and Aunt May was hurried. Though, that doesn’t change the impact of the Uncle Ben death scene.

I will give the movie credit where credit is due.

In all, the trilogy wasn’t that bad (with Spider-Man 3 being one outstanding exception). I give Tobey Maguire 2 ½ stars.
