It’s really nice to feel each other’s energy.”

Telling one story after another through our bodies and voices

In Fall of 2022 the CHS theater program decided to put on a play based on the movie Steel Magnolias. Sophomore Hannah Boeding was cast as Shelby, Fiona Matschullat played Truvy, Margaret Sullivan played Clairee, Lauranna Daniels was cast as Anelle, Liberty Godwin played M’lynn, Dallas Maxey played Ouiser, and Gabie Bartlett played DJ.

The play gave many new opportunities to aspiring actors. In this play many actors got to play big or lead roles for the first time.

“It was amazing playing the lead and my first time. I got to act out a diabetic seizure for the first time so it was

different than any acting I had done before,” Boeding said.

Not only were people cast as leads for the first time but many other crew members played a big role for the first time.

“I enjoyed acting in the play because I usually play smaller roles but I was cast as Clairee, so I had a lot of lines but I really enjoyed being important to the play,” Sullivan said.

Conifer is about being inclusive and providing kids with opportunities, so naturally the theater program does a great job with providing kids with just that.

MIC DROP Interacting with the audience, freshman Gabie Bartlett takes the spotlight onstage. She was cast as the role DJ, and her job was to interview the crowd. Bartlett has been acting since the fourth grade and always enjoyed being the spotlight. “I’ve done theater for five years and I’ve just always liked the attention,” Bartlett said. photo by c, potter SMILE While taking a group photo sophomore Hannah Boeding jumps on her crew mates. Boeding’s love for theater started because of her friends and now they continue her love for theater. “I had friends who were doing theater so thought it would be fun, but after I saw it was my thing,” Boeing said. photo by r. metcalf

BIG BREAK Freshman Margaret Sullivan is acting as the character Clairee. This was the first time she was cast in a big role. “I enjoyed playing Clairee because usually don’t get casted as very big roles. really enjoyed being important in the play,” Sullivan said. photo by c. potter

“For Steel Magnolias I worked with my friend freshman Lauranna Daniels. We hung out a lot during seminar so that we could practice, because we had to rehearse six hours a week, so we were together a lot,” Margaret Sullivan said. photo by c. neumeier

ACTING IT OUT

Sophomore Liberty Godwin continues to give her speech to the crowd. Godwin started acting when she was eleven but Steel Magnolias was one of her favorites. “My favorite part of Steel Magnolias was also the most difficult part. For me, it was playing a character full of raw and challenging emotions. I loved plying M’Lynn and portraying her wide range of emotions,” Godwin said. photo by c. potter
