College Essays Shelby Threadgill

I never really thought of myself as a feminist. I had been raised with the idea that I was capable of doing whatever I wanted. I assumed everyone thought the same.

Therefore I was surprised to find out that after all this time, women had to prove themselves as capable as men. I found myself in a group project with only boys who thought I could not contribute equally to the project simply because I was female.

In my Sophomore year, I was partnered with a group of males for our final World History project that determined our grade for the year. We were each assigned a part by our teacher. Developing a myriad of ideas and approaches, I was excited to share them with the group. However, when I started talking about my ideas, one of the boys told me that I wouldn’t be helping with the project since it was way too difficult for a girl.

Instantly, I started to argue saying that I was capable of doing as much as he but it was no use. They refused to listen and I was excluded from the group. I had been excited to be partnered with them and felt there was much I could contribute to the effort. But after seeing their true attitude towards me and my abilities, my feelings dramatically changed.

I never considered myself less than capable to anyone. After my initial shock, however, I began to doubt myself. Could I keep up? Could I make a significant contribution? Was my ability to think and reason any less because I was a woman? I decided my abilities were based on me as an individual and my worth would not be determined by anyone else.

This group was struggling to get this project going and I could tell they needed my help. They thought they only wanted me to “decorate a poster board.” Meanwhile, their struggle for basic facts had the ability to wreck my grade for the entire semester.

As the due date approached, I finally had it with their attitude. I began gathering facts and putting information to use. I discarded the poster board approach and introduced them to the project website, Prezi. With amazement, these boys realized not only was I equal to their abilities, but I could teach them. We were able to successfully complete our work on time and make a high grade, but it took everyone working together and no one being excluded.

Both the boys and I came to realize that everyone can contribute to work when it was approached with a “can do” attitude rather than one gender considering itself superior to the other. Feminism is about equal opportunities based on ability. It helped all of us change our attitude. It was not only a great experience for me to prove myself as a female but it also changed the minds of each of the boys in the group.

I remember feeling different as a child, not like I liked weird things but in a way that separated me from the other kids. I was scared of everything especially the unknown. Dying was a constant thought on my brain. Little did I know, I had anxiety.

By the time I was in third grade, fear had taken over my life. I didn’t want to go into public places because being around people gave me panic attacks. I had panic attacks throughout my childhood but I didn’t know what they were. I always thought it was a way of God telling me I was dying. The first day of seventh grade I had the worst panic attack of my life. I was in band class playing my instrument when suddenly my heart started beating faster and my forehead felt cold. I tried to play it off as something else but the thought of death kept creeping back to me. I asked my teacher to go to the restroom but she wouldn’t allow it. I remember looking through the small window thinking the angels were on their way to get me. My teacher noticed that something was wrong with me and sent me to the restroom. As soon as I got there I had a complete meltdown thinking I had a tumor and that’s why I was dying. After about ten minutes I calmed down and went back into the class with the fear of death still on my mind.

After that attack I told my mom about it and she took me to a doctor. They wouldn’t put me on medicine since I was still young, I had to learn how to stop the attacks myself. I learned how tell when an attack was coming on and how to stop it. They key was to tell myself that what I was worrying about wasn’t real and if that didn’t work then I had to find a way to keep myself busy to try to avoid the issue. My freshman year I used these tips during my biology class. We were studying the human body, I instantly started to overthink about what could go wrong inside me. I tried telling myself it wasn’t real but it was too late for that so I got up and went to the “restroom”. I walked around the entire downstairs of the school before I had calmed down. I returned to the class and everything was fine after that.

However, I was still having trouble making friends so I joined the high school drill team, the Golden Girls. The first week I didn’t talk to anyone and one of the girls noticed so she came up to me and introduced herself. After that I became more comfortable talking to people, I made a lot more friends and found myself enjoying being apart of the team. I soon became the team clown and also “the girl who starts all the cheers”. Golden Girls helped me realize that it was okay to be myself and people will still accept me. At the end of my Junior year I was confident in myself, I was happy, and had no more fear or the unknown.

Anxiety taught me how to help others with same issue I had, how to make them feel heard and less lonely. I now have a different attitude towards being in new situations and meeting new people. Anxiety changed me for the better and I wouldn’t give up the lessons learned for anything.

Copies Water filled the swimmers’ ears as they submerged into the pool. The swim and dive team had a successful year, with high standings and team spirit.

The swim and dive team had long practices every day that lasted anywhere from one to two hours. Their practices were filled with drills to keep them in shape for their upcoming meets.

“Our practices were pretty tough, especially the 8X25 ‘No Breather’ sets, though they were my favorite because it was one of the more challenging sets,” Danella Torrence said.

Their hard work paid off when they advanced to the regional competition, which was said to have been one of the toughest regions in the state.

One individual, Jarod McCauley, placed 10th in the 100 backstroke.

Another water sport that was just as competitive as swim was water polo.

Water polo was known to be one of the most tiring and aggressive sports. It was not for the weak and their practices definitely kept the players in shape.

“Our practices are from the beginning of 7th period to 3:30. We do drills at the beginning then scrimmage for the rest of practice. We tread water for about 30 minutes a scrimmage,” Shelby Sinor said.

Whether swimming for the fastest time or trying to stay afloat, it was important to remember to just keep swimming.

The sound of baseballs hitting bats echoed from the field.

Varsity baseball had an exciting, successful year filled with new records and a visit from a Hall-of-Famer.

Wesley Johnson pitched a no-hitter during the game against Westfield. The rare occurrence of a perfect pitched game was an exciting start to the season.

“I knew I had it up until the third inning and I just went out not thinking about it, but when I struck out the last kid it was unbelievable,” Johnson said.

Another triumph in the season was Jordan Fisher hitting a three run home run. This occurs when two people are on base and the batter hits a home run which leads to three runs being scored.

“One of my favorite highlights during the season was when Fisher hit a three run home run,” Colton Moydell said.

“Celebrating after the game brought us closer together as a team.”

At the beginning of the season Andrew Cashner, pitcher for the San Diego Padres, retired his number at the Conroe High School baseball field. In high school, Cashner pitched for Conroe so the retirement of his number was a sentimental moment not only for him, but the team and community as well.

Prior to the retirement of his number, Cashner took time to practice with the team and reminisce on old times. Having Cashner at practices really helped prepare the boys for the long season ahead.

“Andrew came out to the fields with us to practice and he told us about his journey from his days at Conroe to where he is now,” Wyatt Jordan said. “Then whenever he came out during our scrimmage and we retired his number and presented him with the jersey, it was really inspiring and a proud moment for the tiger family.”

While breaking new records and reminiscing about old times was a huge accomplishment for the boys this year, they still continued to strive to be better. With the help of their coaches and Cashner, the team was able to carry out the great legacy.

Personal Statement

Throughout my time in high school I have taken a lot of different classes and joined many organisations. I developed leadership qualities through my dance team and yearbook. High school was about discovering who I was and what I wanted to be, and it took four years to figure it out.

When I started high school I knew that I had to be a doctor and go to Texas A&M. I knew that getting into A&M was going to be a challenge but I was hardworking and willing to do whatever it took. I started taking classes that aimed toward the medical field: biology and anatomy and physiology. My senior year I got a job at an after school program working with kids. I realised that I loved spending time with children so I set my career path towards being a pediatrician.

Texas A&M has been my dream school since I attended my first Aggie football game. The entire school was swaying and singing in the stands, the Aggie spitit was alive and I had to be apart of it. My senior year I was accepted into Texas A&M, that was the best moment of my life.

MY entire time in high school I worked hard to be able to have the choices i have today and I’m so glad that I did.

Future Goals/ References

After high school I will attend Texas A&M, where I will study Biomedical Science. After college I will go in to medical school to become a pediatrician. I will then work in a hospital where I can help as many children as I can. Eventually I will open up my own private pediatric doctors office.
