I wish to prove myself against the odds. My goal is to become a first generation college graduate. I’ve witnessed my family struggle to earn an income and i’d like to better myself for them. I’m determined to graduate from the University of Texas, with my education I plan to enrich the lives of athletes as an athletic trainer. After dedicating four years of my high-school career to athletic training, I’ve developed a passion for it. I’ve learned from not only my athletic training career but also from my part time job at Old Navy. I experienced situations at work which required me to be a leader. Balancing between the two has given me foundation for a packed schedule, which I will experience soon at college.

Learning Outcome

Throughout my four years of high school I’ve been given the opportunity to participate in organizations, community services, and advance courses. The following are products of my participation.

In athletic training i assisted at games with injury prevention.

I joined clubs to volunteer with the boys and girls club, shopping with the blind, and challenge air. To make sure i was prep for colllege i enrolled at lone star community college. And I contributed to my high school by making the yearbook.

Going on four years in the sports medicine program, it has set a strong foundation for my future. Knowing I have the capability of earning a master’s in athletic training, motivates me in the classroom and on the field. It is my goal to become a strong figure head in the Athletic training field someday.

Whether it was a Friday night or an early morning, it was all the same. A routine I picked up quickly and learned to love. Basic work began with setting up games. In my first two years that was my main job: set up coolers,tapping situations, first aid gadgets, and other equipment. From this I learned all the skills it takes to run a training facility. Within the next two years I worked more hands on. I learned the different styles of tapping and rehab . Most common injuries athletes experienced were ankles. Mastering wrapping ankles and aiding to different athletes situations gives me a head start in sports medicine. In minor injuries there is a rehabilitation process. Athletes would come into the training room and get examined by the athletic trainers.

I was given the responsibility to advise the injured with a guide made by the professionals. Learning the basics of athletic training sets me up for success in my future career.

Being involved I had to follow the University Interscholastic League guidelines. Thanks to UIL regulations I learned to maintain my grades. Their deadlines kept me in check. Hustling to every grade check making sure my averages were up to a high standard. My grades especially high in classes that prepared me for sports medicine. Learning the ways of the body; Anatomy helped me further in understanding injuries. Studies on tissues gave me an insight to athletes injuries involving ligaments and tendons. Instruction on bones gave me a deeper understanding on fractures. I am becoming a better student so I could be essential out on the field.

Athletic Training is just the beginning of my journey to my goal. Receiving a higher education is the most important objective in my life. Building on my future with the help of my high school education is what I aspire most.

Describe a circumstance, obstacle or conflict in your life, and the skills and resources you used to resolve it. Did it change you? If so, how?

In the Conroe High training room a lot is going on. The athletic trainers are performing injury evaluations and rehab. Student trainers are needed by their side to assist. If we are unsure of how to help there are higher student trainers; captain’s. It’s expected they guide any minor situations that may arise. Approaching the situation is important. There is only one right way to do it. Calm, collective, and open minded.

I am a student trainer captain along with one another. We are two different captains. I aim to be proactive by maintaining good relationships between all the trainers. Although my partner captain fails to see what I envision.

Using her authority on the opposite way. The incorrect guidance has become a roadblock in many occasions.

Friday nights are the most important to athletic trainers. It’s a celebration of all the hard work the athletes and trainers have put in the week before.

Music is going while the athletes are getting hyped. Student trainers are prepping supplies. The environment in the training room is upbeat. Our duty is to walk around, to supervise, and assist in minor things. These minor things may include making sure all supplies is up to speed or all student trainers are participating.

My routine in training on game nights is help get supplies ready with the student trainers. I am a people person and very hands on. I would rather help on call then be direct. On the other hand my partner captain sees everyone below her. She is in dire need to be the upper hand. With this mentality she parades around not looking to help but find a problem.

Of course she finds a problem. In the back of the facility we have a dishwasher. Water bottles are to be washed before every game, it’s mandatory . We typically assign this task to first year trainers. They’re new and need to be given the task directly, because they don’t know where to look for their assignment. She is required to show them, although this isn’t how she handles the situation. In the act of instructing the lower levels her assertion was ,” look at all this work and you’re just sitting there on your butt doing nothing”. It was disrespectful and immature for her to tell the trainers in that manner. The lower level did respond to this in an in orderly fashion given it was disrespectful of her.

In any large organization complications are bound to occur. This situation taught me the right way to lead a group. I learned what not to do in a situation like this one. She didn’t have to order others in that manner. A correct approach could have been,”hey lower level trainers let’s get to work” An upbeat proactive angle to the situation. Her unprofessional behavior was a lesson.
