The Mid-Hudson Valley’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), located at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, offers a host of state-of-the-art technologies and trained personnel to ensure the best outcome for extremely premature newborns and other infants with special medical needs. When a baby is prematurely born, or is an at-term newborn with critical medical issues, a neonatologist joins the team of hospital caregivers. Neonatologists are pediatricians specializing in the care of newborns, and they are available around the clock to provide the latest in diagnosis and treatment. They work with other NICU staff to ensure the highest level of sophisticated care for the young patient’s lungs and airways, cardiovascular system, brain and nervous system, skin, nutritional needs, and overall health.

Each of our hospitals is committed to providing the best care possible for inpatients. Among the services that allow us to do so is our staff of surgical physician assistants. Physician assistants (PAs) are trained in the same academic coursework as are physicians, and are medically licensed to examine, diagnose, and treat patients. Surgical PAs are specially trained in operative procedures and assist the surgeon in the operating room. In addition, surgical PAs in our hospitals are on duty day and night, every day of the year, to monitor patients after surgery and ensure continuity of high quality care. Every patient’s primary care physician, and other caregivers in and outside the hospital, work with the PAs as a patient-oriented team to deliver quality, cost-effective care for any issue that may arise.

Hospitalists are fully trained and board certified medical doctors who specialize in the care of patients admitted to the hospital. With the focus of their practice on inpatient care, Hospitalists are attentive to the medical needs of each patient on a daily basis. If you are admitted for a stay in the hospital, your primary care physician will be in frequent contact with the Hospitalist, as will any other specialists you may be seeing. In addition to overseeing and evaluating your medical treatment, Hospitalists are available to answer questions, and will write prescriptions for any necessary medications upon discharge. Because Hospitalists do not see patients outside the hospital, your primary care provider once again is your care-managing doctor after discharge. If you do not have a primary care physician, the Hospitalists and other clinical staff can recommend local providers.

Vassar Brothers Medical Center is proud to bring an additional group of medical specialists—Intensivists—to its team of inpatient caregivers for hospitalized patients.

Intensivists are physicians with advanced training in the care of critically ill or injured patients. Intensivists apply their knowledge and special skills to the needs of patients in the intensive care unit, as well as in other areas of the hospital as needed. Intensivists work closely with other doctors, nurses, pharmacists, case managers, nutritionists, and other caregivers to ensure the best critical care. With an around-the-clock presence at the hospital, Intensivists are always available to attend incoming emergency room patients, patients already in intensive care, or any other inpatient needing new or additional critical support. www.health-quest.org

r. Angela Keleher heads Health Quest’s breast surgery division at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. The group also includes two other accomplished team members, Dr. Hank Schmidt and nurse practitioner Sara Winterleitner. Both Dr. Keleher and Dr. Schmidt are board certified and fellowship trained in breast surgery, a stellar accomplishment and an important distinction for this group.

Dr. Keleher completed a fellowship at the University of Texas and worked at the prestigious M. D. Anderson Cancer Center before relocating to Poughkeepsie.

Dr. Schmidt received his fellowship at the University of Chicago, as well as a PhD from the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Keleher received the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization’s 2008 Local Hero Award for her outstanding work in breast cancer awareness.

or over two decades Dr. James A. Wing has been a surgeon at Northern Dutchess Hospital, using minimally invasive techniques for a variety of health problems. From simple excisions to abdominal surgery, those techniques allow patients to get back on their feet faster. Dr. Wing received his medical training in Italy at the University of Bologna, and has been board certified in general surgery since 1986. He did his residency in general surgery at Nassau County Medical Center, where he stayed on as a staff physician while also teaching advanced trauma life support at the State University of New York, Stony Brook.

Dr. Brian Binetti brings to the Division of General Surgery in Rhinebeck his training in the latest, minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as endoscopy and robotics. Dr. Binetti received his MD from Saint George’s University, and was awarded the Herbert A. Schulte Award for excellence in surgery during his residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. Since that residency Dr. Binetti has been at the Albany Medical College as a Fellow in minimally invasive surgery, and also served as a clinical instructor before joining HQMP.

efore Health Quest’s Division of Maternal Fetal Health Medicine opened in 2008, pregnant women in need of specialized care had to travel outside the region for high-quality services. Heading this full-time specialty department—the only one of its kind in the Hudson Valley—is Dr. Kimberly Heller, who has been a practicing obstetrician/gynecologist since 1985. Dr. Heller is a resource for high-risk mothers as well as other practitioners needing referrals for their patients. A key component of Dr.

Heller’s approach is pre-conception counseling, in which she advises mothers-to-be on the level of risk, if any, during pregnancy due to their personal medical history.

efore moving to his Rhinebeck practice, Dr. Ely B. Nathan was a full-time attending obstetrician and gynecologist at Bassett Healthcare. He and his family (his wife is a pediatrician and a child psychiatrist) are delighted to be settling in the small-town community of Rhinebeck, where Dr. Nathan can be readily available to patients, and guide them through whatever questions and concerns they may have as parents.

Dr. Nathan completed his medical training at Baylor College of Medicine, and was an OB/GYN resident at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. During that time he garnered the Best Resident Research Award in 1999, from the New York Obstetrical Society, for docu-

menting with his colleagues that certain positions during labor can provide vital data about the fetus’s status without prolonged fetal monitoring.

As a father of two young children, Dr. Nathan knows what it’s like to have worries and fears about pregnancy and birthing. He brings empathy and insight from his experience as an expectant parent and a concerned father, helping patients navigate the healthcare and birthing decisions today’s parents face. Having been a “patient” himself, he knows the sorts of things people are going to be concerned about, what their expectations might be, and what they will want to know through the many phases of becoming a parent.

he rewarding feeling she received while working in a community health outreach program during her early college years is what inspired Dr. Marina Mezey to become a physician. Dr. Mezey completed her residency in family medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon, and is a board certified family physician After serving on the staff of the Institute for Urban Family Health’s Mt. Hope Family Practice Clinic in the Bronx, Dr. Mezey relocated to the Hudson Valley in 2006.

Lauren Bumby began her career in emergency care but soon realized that the nature of the ER—rapid assessment and treatment of critical illness—kept her from what she really wanted: to develop long-term relationships with her patients, advising their wellness decisions across a span of years, not just one night. So, Dr. Bumby transitioned from emergency to primary care, joining Health Quest Medical Practice in Carmel in 2008.

n 1985, Dr. William Heffernan came to Highland on assignment with the National Health Services Corps, a federal program that places physicians in underserved areas.

Right away, he felt very much at home in the community and soon decided to open his own practice, which he shares with Dr. Mary Dyer, who joined him in 1999. Dr. Dyer completed her residency in Family Practice in Kingston.

s a primary care physician, Dr. David S. Cho enjoys guiding patients toward better health and seeing them improve over time, celebrating with them in their physical achievements, as well as providing them comfort during times of illness and grief.
