400 The Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial celebrates the 400th anniversary of the voyages of discovery made by Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain, plus the 200th anniversary of Robert Fulton’s Hudson River steamship voyage. These journeys are among the most significant events in European exploration and led to the settlement of Dutchess County. Come join in our celebration at Dutchess River Days!

The Dutch influence throughout our region, initially coined “New Netherland,” dates back to Henry Hudson’s discovery. His first mate described the area as “pleasant land” and eagerly investigated the new opportunities it offered. We invite you, your friends and family to do the same—come discover Dutchess County, known for its striking natural scenery and wide-ranging recreational possibilities. The 2009 celebration is marked by exciting events at historic sites and parks, in all of our towns and villages, and along the banks of the majestic Hudson River. The Walkway Over the Hudson opens as the longest pedestrian bridge in the world in October, 2009. Standing on the former railroad bridge, you’ll see panoramic views for miles and miles, both north and south. It’s an inspiring sight you’ll never forget. The Walkway is open to bikes and non-motorized vehicles, connecting to area rail trails.

Visit www.Dutchess400.com, Dutchess County Tourism’s official website, for all area Quadricentennial activities. Read about regional history, the arts, Dutch food and trivia, the Native Americans who greeted Hudson, and profiles of historic sites and museums. When Hudson returned, he did not bring with him silk and spices, as was expected. Instead he told of a place where, “the land is the finest for cultivation that I ever in my life set foot upon.” Europeans were intrigued as Hudson described the valley’s natural abundance, commercial advantages and overall beauty. Four hundred years later, we still pride ourselves on these advantages. It’s well worth discovering Dutchess County on your own travel adventure! The Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial is a great time to have fun exploring the history, arts and recreational offerings here for yourself, as we look forward to the innovative activities yet to come throughout Dutchess County, the Hudson Valley and New York State. The journey continues….

Fish and Game Whether you’re looking for trophy-class fish or you just want to experience the tranquility of a secluded trout stream, Dutchess County has it all. The Hudson River is quickly becoming the destination point for anglers from around the globe. Our many stocked streams and lakes have miles of public access available, and hunters and water fowlers can challenge themselves at one of our many multiple use areas. For sporting clays, trap and skeet shooters, Dutchess County is a top Northeast destination, with five shooting clubs and preserves open to the public. There are numerous spots for catching trout, bass, pickerel and perch, as well as places for dip-netting smelt, alewives and blueback herring. The beautiful Hudson itself is an ideal setting for numerous species, including largemouth and smallmouth bass, striped bass, brown bullhead, carp, white catfish and American shad. Dutchess County is one of the top two counties in the Southern Region of New York State for deer hunting with a special archery season for deer spanning a total of about six weeks. In designated hunting areas you can also find pheasant, grouse, woodcock, squirrel, cotton-tail rabbit, raccoon and waterfowl. Be sure to contact the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in New Paltz for specific fishing and hunting regulations and other relevant information before your planned visit to Dutchess County.
