February 2017 is African AmericanMonthandwewould like to give credit and recognition for all of the well-known, and little known doctors of African American decent. Some of these people are in medicine or in the medical field. There are some names you may even be familiar with as we begin to share each of them with you:
Dr. Clinton Canady, Jr. Originally from Detroit, in Michigan affectionately known as "Doc" began his distinguished career with a Doctorate of Dental Science from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, and he was the second Black dentist in Lansing and practiced for over 50 years. Among his many accomplishments and achievements, Doc Canady served as:
Emma Reynolds, a young woman who wanted to be a nurse, was denied admission to the Chicago area nursing school because she was black. Her brother, the pastor of St. Stephens Church, approached respected black surgeon Dr. Daniel Williams for help. Dr. Williams and pastor Reynolds decided to open a nursing school for black women. In 1890 Dr. Williams consulted with a group ofblack ministers & physicians to explore startinganurse trainingfacilityand hospital. The group got assis-
President of the Lansing BranchNAACP, thefirst Black member of the City of the Lansing Fire Board, the first Black member of the State of Michigan Dental Board, a National Dental Examiner, member of both the Michigan and National Dental Associations, the first Black memberoftheCountryClubof Lansing,afoundingmemberof Alpha Chi Boule of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, and a member of the Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Guardsmen. He worked tirelessly to provide employment opportunities for other members of the Black communityin Lansing, Michigan.
Dr. Alexa Canady-Davis
became the first AfricanAmerican female Neurosurgeon and one of 10 firstfemaleneurosurgeons. She was ChiefofNeurosurgery and
Professor of Neurosurgery at the children's hospital of Michigan for many years. Her specialty was Pediatric neurosurgery. Originally from Lansing, she and her mother are both in the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. They are the only mother-daughter duo inthehistory there.
Dr. Alexa Canady Davis received a Distinguished Service Award from Wayne State University, and the Leonard F. Swain Award Esteemed Alumni Award from University of Michigan Black Alumni. However, she is most proud of Teacher of the Year Award at Children's Hospital of Michigan.

and steroids.
RebeccaLee Crumplerwas the first African American woman to become a physician in the
United States.
Dr. Ben Carson from Michigan became famous when he performed an operation to sepa-
tance and donations from prominent white citizens as well as black individuals and organizations. Provident was started in 1891.
Black hospitalmovement inAlabamaAlabama as well as the rest of the South known as Jim Crow, blacks were barred from working in or being treated at many area hospitals. These restrictions were partly responsible for starting the Black hospital movement in the late nineteenthcentury. Duringthefirst half of the twentieth century,

AftersheobtainedherM.D.in 1981,JemisoninternedatLos AngelesCounty/Universityof SouthernCaliforniaMedical CenterandlaterworkedasagenAstronautandphysicianMaeeralpractitioner.Forthenexttwo JemisonwasbornonOctober17,andahalfyears,shewasthearea 1956,inDecatur,Alabama,thePeaceCorpsmedicalofficerfor youngestchildofCharlieJemison,SierraLeoneandLiberiawhere arooferandcarpenter,andshealsotaughtanddidmedical Dorothy(Green)Jemison,anele-research.Followingherreturnto mentaryschoolteacher.Hersister,theUnitedStatesin1985,Jemison AdaJemisonBullock,becameamadeacareerchangeanddecided childpsychiatrist,andherbroth-tofollowadreamshehadnurer,CharlesJemison,isarealturedforalongtime.InOctober estatebroker.Thefamilymovedofthatyear,sheappliedforadmissiontoNASA'sastronauttraining program.TheChallengerdisaster ofJanuary1986delayedtheselectionprocess,butwhenshereappliedayearlater,Jemisonwasone ofthe15candidateschosenfroma fieldofabout2,000.
