John Dewane for Ingham County Prosecutor

Prosecutor John Dewane addressing gun violence in Lansing

In his first year as Ingham County Prosecutor, John Dewane has worked to turn around gun violence in Lansing. Just two years ago, 14 homicides were recorded in Lansing by mid-May. This year there have only been two - a drop of 85% and a dozen fewer lives taken by the uniquely American tragedy of gun homicides.

John Dewane’s approach is grounded in 22 years of experience as a trial prosecutor - working with victims and

their surviving families. “Unfortunately a majority of homicide victims are persons of color, especially Black Americans,” said John Dewane. “I’ve seen this first-hand, working with victims to try to resolve these cases and bring about justice.”

“We know it makes a difference when illegal guns - and those who use them - are taken off the streets. The statistics back this up, but behind every one of those numbers there is someone’s life.”

This past fall, Lansing and Ingham County began working with Advance

Peace - a community-based violence prevention/interruption program. It’s shown remarkable progress in just a few months. .

John Dewane was appointed as Prosecutor by the Ingham County Circuit Court,. He is running as a Democratic candidate in the 2024 election.

“We’ve got a major challenge ahead of us, because Ingham County’s homicide rate jumped 50% in 6 years” said Dewane. “So far we have shown results, and we’re hoping to sustain these and build a better future for our youth.”

A Look In The Mirror - Wilma Rudolph (1940 to 1994) Olympic Track Medalist

In 1956 and 1960, African-American sprinter and Olympic champion, Rudolph, won gold and bronze medals, respectively, in the 200 and 4x100meter relays at the Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia. During that period, she was widely regarded as the fastest woman on the planet. Due to the Olympics’ worldwide television coverage, Rudolph and other athletes such as Rafer Johnson and Oscar Robertson became international celebrities.

During the 1960s, Rudolph became a prominent figure in both the US and abroad. As an Olympic gold medalist, she became a role model for women and African-American athletes. Her achievements also helped raise the profile of women’s track & field in the country.

Rudolph officially retired from competition in 1962. At that time, she was the world record holder in the 200 and 100 meters individual events.

Following the Olympics, she became a coach and an instructor at Tennessee State University.

Rudolph died in 1994 due to throat and brain cancer. Her achievements have been memorialized through various mediums, such as a postage stamp, documentaries, and a movie. She is also featured in children’s books and other publications.

ICYMI: Gray TV: Rep. Elissa Slotkin continues push for gun safety reform in her campaign for Senate

The Gray Washington Bureau reported on Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin’s focus on one of the top issues for all Michiganders ahead of the 2024 U.S. Senate election. Gun violence remains an immediate issue for voters of all ages and Slotkin has represented both Oxford and East Lansing – two communities that have been devastated by school shootings in just the last 16 months alone. The story noted that the Congresswoman has introduced multiple pieces of legislationaddressing the issue of gun violence and intends to continue pushing for no-brainer gun safety legislation in the U.S. Senate.

“I’m the first congresswoman in America to have two school shootings in her district in 16 months.”

Highlights: [Slotkin, a] former CIA officer and Pentagon official says preventing gun violence is now a matter of homeland security. In the last few months, she has introduced multiple pieces of gun safety legislation including:

Legislation to fund CDC research on gun violence prevention at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Another bill requiring parents to secure guns so children cannot access them

A third aimed at preventing the transfer of firearms to people convicted of gun

misdemeanors for three years

A bill that would require a one week waiting period before a person can buy a firearm

“This is an increasing issue, a top voters minds, just because of the spate of gun violence where it feels like every week or even multiple times a week, there are some tragedy at a school or elsewhere,” said Jessica Taylor, The Cook Political Report Senate and Governors Editor.

“I have seen polling in Michigan that shows that overwhelmingly they do want more bipartisan measures,” she

said. “And I think that can include, again, things like stricter background checks and different things, red flag laws. And this is a place where the public is ahead of where politicians are largely,” said Taylor.

“I’m the first congresswoman in America to have two school shootings in her district in six months. So it wasn’t that I woke up one morning and said, let’s make this an issue. It’s the number one killer of children under 21. And it came home in just a very real and very raw way.”

Winners will be selected June 19.

“LAFCU is committed to showing

individuals various pathways to achieve financial success,” said Kelli Ellsworth Etchison, LAFCU chief marketing officer and chief diversity officer. “We understand that it is not a one-size-fitsall approach and everyone has different backgrounds and goals. Warmer Weather Calls for Active Bodies

Lots of sunshine and longer days provide more opportunities for the entire family to enjoy the outdoors and get active. Running, biking, and walking are all great options as the weather turns from winter to spring, but it’s important to ease back into these activities to prevent any strains or injuries.

“Often people become less active in the winter months, making them prone to more risks of an injury if they are bouncing back into an activity they haven’t done in a while,” said David Pohl, DO, primary care physician and sports medicine specialist at McLaren Greater Lansing Family Medicine

North. “If you were running 10 miles per week last year and stopped through the winter, start with 2 miles and work your way back up gradually through the spring and summer months to avoid getting hurt.”

Exercise and staying active is vital for people of all ages. Children and teenagers are encouraged to try to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, while adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardiovascular activity per week.

“Getting these levels of cardiovascular exercise can reduce the risk of being

diagnosed with some medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even certain cancers,” said Dr. Pohl. “Exercise can help control weight, improve your mood, and improve your sleep.”

Although everyone has varying levels of activity and exercise tolerance, walking can be a great way to stay active, and with nicer weather, it can be easy to do outdoors. Those looking for more of a challenge can seek hiking, running, biking, and recreational sports. “Even for those who find walking difficult, I encourage you to discuss exercise options with your physician,”

said Dr. Pohl. “We can look at more seated or stationary activities to help progress back toward walking. This can include water aerobics, tai chi, and chair exercises. All in all, any kind of movement is important for your overall health and body.”

To avoid injuries, including sprains and strains, Dr. Pohl suggests always starting with a good warm-up that includes stretches before and after your activity. To avoid overheating and dehydration, drink plenty of water and wear moisture-wicking clothing to keep you cool and dry.

Three Things to Know as a First-Time Homebuyer

Whether you are actively looking or thinking about buying your first home, here are three things you should know before you buy.

Budget for Home Costs

Buying a home can be one of your largest and most significant purchases. You want to ensure you’re financially prepared before you begin house hunting. Creating a budget can help you determine what you can afford.

Be on the lookout for any fees associated

with your current living arrangements. You’ll want to include initial fees like closing costs and inspections, paying for movers, or buying cleaning supplies.

If you’re selling a house or breaking a lease agreement, consider that you may have to do some renovations or pay a cancellation fee. These expenses, both for a new home and where you currently live, can add up quickly and unexpectedly.

Save for a Down Payment

After you’ve established your budget

and price range, you’ll be able to determine how much you should have for a down payment for your home. Remember that the more you save for and put down up front, the less you’ll be paying in interest over the duration of your mortgage.

Connect with a Lender

Lastly, reach out to a mortgage lender and make sure they’re the right for you. Being new to the home buying process, the right lender will help you with the preapproval process and next steps as

you start looking at homes.

MSUFCU offers a variety of home loan products with various terms and rates to meet your needs, including a first-time homebuyer option. Plus MSUFCU’s team of Mortgage Lenders are here to walk you through the process step by step.

Too busy to work out? Why Stretching is a Great Option for Busy Individuals

Stretching is an essential component of any workout routine, and it is crucial for maintaining overall health and fitness. I’ve been stretching regularly for about 3 years and I’ve seen that stretching helps to increase flexibility, range of motion, and can also help prevent injury. When you stretch, you are elongating your muscles, which can help to reduce muscle tension and improve circulation.

In addition to the physical benefits, stretching can also have a positive impact on your mental health. Stretching helps to reduce stress and anxiety levels by promoting relaxation and deep breathing. It can also help to improve your focus and concentration. This improves my productivity and general feeling of well-being.

For beginners, I recommend starting with the following three stretches:

1. Hamstring stretch: Sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you. Reach forward and try to touch your toes, keeping your back straight. Hold for 15-30 seconds.

2. Shoulder stretch: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and clasp your hands behind your back.

Gently lift your hands up as far as you can, keeping your arms straight. Hold for 15-30 seconds.

3. Quad stretch: Stand with your feet hip-width apart and lift your left foot off the ground. Hold onto your left ankle with your left hand and gently pull your heel towards your buttocks. Hold for 15-30 seconds, then switch sides.

Along with stretching, there are foods that are beneficial for your soft tissues. Here are five foods that are good for tendons and muscles:

• Salmon: Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce inflammation and improve joint health.

• Sweet Potatoes: Sweet potatoes are a great source of potassium, which is essential for muscle and nerve function.

• Nuts: Nuts, such as almonds and walnuts, are high in protein and healthy fats, which are important for muscle growth and repair.

• Spinach: Spinach is a good source of iron, which is necessary for

healthy muscles and tendons.

• Eggs: Eggs are an excellent source of protein, which is essential for building and repairing muscle tissue.

Finally, stretching is a great option for those who may not have time for a

full workout. Even just a few minutes of stretching can help to improve flexibility, reduce muscle tension, and promote relaxation. It’s a simple and effective way to maintain overall health and well-being.

The Rise of the Side Hustle Economy: Embracing New Opportunities

In recent years, the side hustle economy has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity and widespread adoption. Driven by technological advancements, shifting work patterns, and a desire for financial independence, individuals from various backgrounds are increasingly turning to side hustles to supplement their income and pursue their passions. This article explores the growing trend of side hustles, discussing its advantages, drawbacks, and the opportunities it presents.

The side hustle economy offers numerous benefits. First and foremost, it provides a means to diversify income streams. With traditional employment often offering limited financial security, side hustles offer a way to generate additional revenue and build a financial safety net. Moreover, side hustles often allow individuals to pursue their passions and hobbies, transforming them into profitable ventures. Whether it’s starting an online store, freelancing, or monetizing creative skills, side hustles

provide an avenue for personal and professional growth. Additionally, side hustles offer the flexibility to set one’s own hours and work from anywhere, enabling individuals to strike a balance between work and personal life.

However, the side hustle economy is not without its challenges. One of the key concerns is the potential for burnout. Juggling multiple commitments can be mentally and physically exhausting, leaving little time for rest and selfcare. Moreover, the lack of stability and steady income can create financial uncertainty, making it difficult to plan for the future or secure essential benefits such as health insurance. Additionally, managing the various aspects of a side hustle, such as marketing, finances, and customer relations, can be timeconsuming and demanding, requiring individuals to develop a diverse skill set.

Despite the challenges, the side hustle economy has opened up new avenues

for financial growth and personal fulfillment.

In conclusion, the side hustle economy has emerged as a significant force in the modern work landscape. By providing opportunities for supplemental income, personal growth, and flexibility, side hustles have garnered immense popularity. However, it is essential

to navigate the challenges associated with this trend, including burnout and financial instability. As the side hustle economy continues to evolve, individuals must strike a balance between their primary employment and side pursuits to maximize the benefits while mitigating the drawbacks.
