Rodney Christopherson’s Hardtail Iron Sportster So the phone rings. “There’s a really cool Iron Sportster up here. You should write it up for the magazine. It’s got the right look- hardtail frame, stepped seat, sissy bar. Just a cool 70’s style old-looking bike.” In the normal chaos, I miss the bike and lose the owner’s number. Then Dennis loses the number. A few weeks later, I’m cruising the local craigslist for old stuff and find a cool hardtail Iron Sportster just down the road from me. So I call figure it’s worth a call. “Button?- yeah, you’re the guy Dennis was talking about.. Yup, this is the right bike.” Rodney Christopherson is not new to riding. “I had a 97 Softtail, traded a truck to get it. I like it but sold it. Then I got a new girlfriend. That meant I needed to get another bike.” This chopper popped up in Virginia, with the typical “it’s in great shape- just get on it and ride.” sales pitch. Well, it didn’t happen that way. Pretty sure it never does. “When I got on it, the clutch kept hanging up. The guy says ‘Oh, it’ll loosen up once you ride it some’ and he took it down the road first to warm it up for me. It wasn’t any better when he came back. Long story short, the price got better, I brought the bike home and took it to Classic Cycle. Thomas fixed the clutch.” Then I went riding. “It ran ok but by the time I was getting home, there was a huge cloud of blue smoke behind me.” Not cool. “So Rob Pettit helped me check the compression. It showed less than 10 lbs per cylinder. When I pulled the jugs off the pistons, the rings fell out in pieces.” A J&P top end kit and a little more work and all is good. “It’s a blast- we love it. Makes your feet and butt really numb on long rides, but she really likes it. We’ve been up to Chimney Rock and into the mountains since I did the top end and had no problems. It’s just a fun bike. It’s a completely different feel. What about the ad on craigslist? If it’s such a blast, why is it out there with a price? “Well, to be honest, I will sell it but I’m not sure that I want to sell it. I might get another bike that’s a little better for longer trips. I put the price up there, so I’m cool whether it sells or not.” I suggested he keep it for the good times. Sometimes life gets too real and the only thing that will clear your head is that foamy tingle that comes from a noisy, vibrating hardtail iron hotrod. All those thumbs-up help, too.

PGR Mission for Larry Parker By Wally Wersching The Patriot Guard Riders (PGR) was formed in 2005 to shelter and protect the deceased’s family from the protestors of the Westboro Baptist Church who claim that the deaths of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan were retribution for American tolerance of homosexuality. PGR members would position themselves to physically shield the mourners from the presence of the protesters by blocking them from view with their motorcade, or by having members hold American flags. The group would also mask the protesters’ chants by singing patriotic songs or by revving motorcycle engines. The group’s mission quickly expanded to include the funerals of police officers, firemen, first responders, and any active duty member or veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s over 220,000 members are now largely focused on recognizing and honoring the sacrifices of dead service members. In addition to attending funerals, the PGR also honors troops at deployment ceremonies, and welcome home celebrations, and visits mili-
tary hospitals to encourage and honor wounded service members of the United States Armed Forces. I was notified of an upcoming PGR mission on October 11th for Larry Parker - a US Navy veteran. It was a two part mission – the first part was at the Blakely Funeral Home in Gaffney, SC where the PGR members stood a flag line to honor Larry before the funeral service. The second part was to escort Larry and the motorcade to his final resting place in the Goucher Baptist Church cemetery, then stand a flag line during the military burial ceremony. I couldn’t make it to the funeral home so I rode directly to the Goucher Baptist Church cemetery. I took back roads to Rt 105, and then turned south onto Rt 150. Goucher Baptist Church is in the middle of nowhere after I turned right onto Goucher Creek Road in Cherokee County, South Carolina. At about 2:30, I pulled into the church parking lot, and I saw three men in white Navy uniforms getting ready for the ceremony. The officer-in-charge
rode a 2013 Victory Judge so we had something in common as I parked “Miss Vickie” next to his. We talked about Victory motorcycles for a while, and I shared a copy of Carolina Chrome magazine with him. Afterwards, we all walked up to the burial site to wait for the motorcade to arrive. We stood in the shade of a small tree, and talked. I learned about the young men and where they were stationed. Some things have drastically changed since I was in the Navy in the 1960’s. I learned that the young officer was a nuclear power instructor – the job I wanted after I graduated from college.
At a little after 3:00, I saw the headlights of the motorcade coming over the hill. They rode behind the church, and in front before they parked. The hearse continued to the back of the cemetery above the grave site to have a clear path for the pallbearers to carry Larry.
We formed a flag line with American flags and one US navy flag on either side of the pallbearer’s path, and saluted as they passed. Then we reformed the flag line around the grave site. After everyone was seated under the canopy, the minister recited some scriptures. Then one navy man played taps on the trumpet. After it finished, they ceremonially folded the flag that was draped over Larry’s coffin, and presented it to a young lady in the front row. A couple of the mourners came by, and shook our hand to thank us for being there. It was not necessary to thank us because it was our honor to be there for Larry. When we were dismissed, we walked back to the motorcycles holding our flags with respect. After taking the flag apart, we placed them into the little motorcycle trailer with all the others.
After exchanging a few pleasantries along with telling them how to get back to I85, I shared a few magazines with them. Most of them, I will not see until the next PGR mission. I check my email every day for the next mission I can attend. I have been a member since 2007, and always enjoy meeting the men and women who honor the veterans. Every mission is different from the last.

THE BARRY BROWN BAND I had the pleasure of talking too barry of the
barry brown band in hartsville south carolina. Barry was doing a home town show at the center theater in hartsville with bucky covington. Barry is a home town boy from mcbee, sc and is married with 3 daughters. His family owns brown’s rv and camper in mcbee, sc. He has played with the great kenny chesney and was influenced by george strait, garth brooks, hank williams jr and the beatles. The barry brown band plays a great mix of country, southern rock and has many boot kickin originals including grandma’s song. Barry’s music is being played nationally on over 2100 country stations. Barry was influenced to sing and play at a young age by family and friends. He is signed with the record label magenta records out of nashville, tn. Barry loves to do cross country motor cross in his spare time and spend quality time with his family and friends. If you get the pleasure of talking to him you will quickly see what his favorite saying is:

So last month someone asked how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop while riding my bike. I promised a post Halloween answer following some research. Well, the results are in and I need to say they are not conclusive. When I was assembling my test materials I almost ruined a couple of relationships. Grandchildren do not like to wake in the middle of the night to find Poppa crawling on his hands and knees on the floor of their rooms searching for their Halloween bags. Their parents also don’t like being awakened in the middle of the night to scared screaming children. Having failed to secure test supplies for free from my grands I broke down and did what I should have done
in the beginning and I went to Wal-Mart. There is some strange people at Wal-Mart ya’ll. And they gave me a bunch of crap for standing outside asking children for candy. One sketchy old man even offered some advice, he suggested that I buy a van and offer children candy. Who the heck does that? Having failed to secure much needed testing supplies again I initiated plan “c”. I went to the Dollar Tree. Yo, everything in that store was a dollar ya’ll, who would have thunk it? So, I bought a dollars worth of Tootsie Pops. Let the testing begin. Test one I learned that you cant eat a Tootsie Pop wearing a full face helmet without drilling a hole. Test two I learned that you can’t unwrap
one of those suckers while riding in traffic. Test three I learned that if any of that sweet candy drool comes out of your mouth at eighty MPH it goes straight in your ear. And finally, if you try this as a rider and not a passenger you will become annoyed with that little paper stick and wind up biting that thing anyway. So, as I said, inconclusive. Off to a dentist appointment to take care of a couple of new cavities. Ahh, the sacrifices made for journalism and science. Until December, Dr. Dilliagaf. P.S.
