Vacation Anyone?

Lessons from the Open Road: A Devotional for Motorcycle Riders By K. D. Byrd

Vacation anyone? Some friends of ours love to take long bike rides, even seven hours to the coast. Even the word “vacation” excites me as I eagerly begin counting down the days. Remember the honeysuckle? Is there something that makes you feel close to God? The ocean is one of those awe inspiring locations for me. It’s beyond my comprehension that God created something so magnificent. My favorite vacation is a beach vacation. There are times when I need a break, some time out. If you can’t afford a vacation, enjoy a local park or find a quiet place, relax, and take a vacation in your mind.

Wayne’s Trip To Sturgis Rally Submitted Pictures & Story By WAYNE POWELL

I have always wondered why every biker wants to go to Sturgis?! I finally had the opportunity to go and WOW!! We left on an early Saturday morning and drove straight through to get there! We got there late Sunday evening checked into our cabin at the Full Throttle Saloon and it was party from there! I would tell everyone that every gets a chance to go… GO!! The thing about Sturgis is everyone is equal; everyone is there to ride and enjoy the party. We rode to the Badlands, to Wyoming and to Devil’s Tower. This was some of the most amazing riding I have ever had. We visited a few Harley shops as a “must”! Let me tell you; I have road in the rain but as we were riding in Custard State Park, we got caught in two hail storms!! Of course, if you have been through there, you know; there is NO where to stop and hide!! Lucky for us, we found one tree on side of road… by the time it was over, there was 10 others under that little tree wih us!! Full Throttle Saloon was a great place to stay from the bands and shows AND of course, all the bartenders and shot girls!!! The Stone House Saloon was also a must!! It is an old house, turned into a bar. People had signed the walls of the house for decades. It had a live band playing, and a bar, of course. What’s a trip to Sturgis without visiting downtown, checking out the bikes and vendors? I can say that it was an experience of a lifetime!! I would recommend anyone that ever gets a chance to go!! Always remember ride safe and enjoy those 2 wheels! ~Wayne

Joker PowerSports Anniversary Party and Free Bike Giveaway By Wally Wersching

Joker Powersports held their 1st Anniversary party at 105 Stoney Point Road in Blacksburg, SC from 10:00AM to 5:00PM on April 6th, 2019. They had a lot scheduled during the day like live bands from noon to 5:00PM: Ziggy Pockets & the Southern Style Band from noon to 2:00PM, and “The Piedmont Boys” from 3:00 to 5:00PM. Along with the live bands, there was a bouncy house for the kids, a bike wash, a food truck, and vendors with all kinds of stuff for sale. The real draw of the afternoon was a free motorcycle giveaway: a Harley Softail with custom paint. The winner had to be present to win. I left home at about 10:00 heading east on Rt 74, and stopped for gas at the convenience store at Rt 180. It’s the cheapest premium gas around – even cheaper than South Carolina. After I filled “Miss Vickie”, I headed south on Rt 180, and after a few miles, turned left onto Rt 226. I followed Rt 226 into Grover, NC, and after passing over I85, turned into the parking lot for Joker Powersports. Luckily, I had been there before so I knew where it was. It has a Blacksburg, SC address because it is in South Carolina but it’s closer to Grover - just across the state line. I arrived at about 10:45. The band was busy setting up, and the vendors were already selling their stuff under the canopy. The place used to be a flea market on the weekends so there’s ample room for the vendors. I started to walk around to see what the vendors were selling, and came across the booth for Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group. The young lady talked me into filling out an entry form to win a new Ducati motorcycle. If I win it, I’d probably kill myself on it. It is fast, and fun to ride! I saw a few old friends in the mix, and had some pleasant conversations with them about everything from what motorcy14

cles are the best to what kind of brownies she made earlier in the morning. Nothing much was happening, so I walked around looking at anything and everything. I noticed that there was a wall in the building with a lot of pictures on it – the wall of fame had all satisfied customers of Joker Powersports. There was a lot, and they all were smiling. I walked around to the front of the building, and watched as a few bikers rolled in. There was a steady stream of bikers coming to the event. I watched as a family rolled in – the mother and father on his Harley Softail, and then the daughter on her Sportster. I could tell that she wasn’t that comfortable on that bike. It was too tall for her. I learned later that she was only 5’2”. I talked with her and her parents for a while. She just bought her bike a few months ago, and was still becoming comfortable on it. I gave them suggestions on how to lower it, and make it handle better. I also watched as a man tried to fit a tour pack that he just bought onto his bike. It was attached with the Harley quick release set-up. Once he got it on, he couldn’t close the lid, and latch it. He tried for a good half hour but finally took it back. Not everything fits as easy as they say. At noon, Ziggy Pockets & the Southern Style Band started playing, and they sounded great. More and more people were coming in. I could see that there would be a crowd later in the day when they gave away the bike. I couldn’t stay, so I left about 12:15 heading home the way I came. I saw quite a few bikes heading to the party as I rode. I learned later that the winner was Holley Walker. I got her picture from the Joker Powersports Facebook page. Phil Page Memorial Challenge Write Up By Tammy Fowler-Gowin Pierce

One thing that I truly appreciate about our biker community, is that when there is a need we step up to the plate. For years we have helped children, veterans and folks that are in need. We are our brothers and sisters’ keepers. On Saturday March 30th The HOG Central SC Chapter of Columbia SC held the Phil Page Memorial Challenge benefiting Carolina Sunshine for Children. This benefit helps in granting wishes to the children in SC with Life Threatening Illnesses. Like many of you I had never heard of Carolina Sunshine for Children. So I was eager to participate. Phil Page got involved with this ride years ago. He pretty much made it a mission. “For the Children” was his motto. He saw the need to help the children of our state. Putting a smile on a child’s face is priceless. He with the help of many in this community have raised over $250,000 dollars. On his own he helped to raise much of this himself. When Phil passed away in 2016 the HOG Chapter of Central SC took up the torch and keeps this ride alive in his memory. Those who knew Phil gave me some insight on this remarkable man. He was who he was they all said. A biker with a big heart, that gave 100% of himself on any project he did, and a voice that was unmistakable. Many spoke of him with a tear in their eye. He is dearly missed by the ones who knew him. I’m just sorry that I never had the opportunity to meet this man. On March 30th we left out on a cool Saturday morning meeting up at Harley Haven in Irmo to a cup of hot coffee and hot biscuits. After a brief meeting over 30 bikes and bikers headed to the coast of SC. Edisto to be more specific. We were all looking forward to some warmer weather. As we cruised through the country side along the small towns and community centers folks of all kinds were waving to us. Some even taking pictures and live streaming of this large group riding through their town. The smell of the wisteria and flowers in bloom filled the air as we winded down South Carolina back roads. The air became a little warmer and we were excited to make the journey to Pressley’s Restaurant and the taste of SC seafood. We made our first stop outside of Orangeburg where we picked up even more riders for the journey. After a much-needed break we took out again, next stop the beach! We were making our way to the island and riding under the Live Oak trees hanging heavy with the Spanish Moss you could smell the salt water. Passing the farmers markets that were busy with tourist and locals, and fishermen were casting their lines. The road meandered around the marsh. Making the trek across the high bridge. The wind coming off the marsh was very chilly. Making our way around the island I am sure the sound of thundering motorcycles coming onto this quite island was a sight to see. We finally make our stop at Pressley’s on the water. They had our tables set up outside on the pier. Where we could sit in the warm sun, smell the saltwater and watch as the fishermen bring home their catch. What a great way to spend an afternoon lunch, on the water, with good friends talking about the day’s ride. As many remembered Phil Page and spoke of the fond memories, good laughs, and what the ride meant to him. Listening to stories of some of the earlier rides I thought to myself why I had never heard of this benefit ride. And how I was not going to miss the next one! As we all finished up with our meal and stories, we saddled up again for the journey home. What a great ride! Making a child’s wish come true. “For the Children” what we do can make a positive difference in a child’s life. The Chapter raised over $5000.00 this year for the “Carolina Sunshine for Children”. Thank you to all that participated with their time, resources and money. I look forward to this event next year and hope that you will make sure that you put this event on your riding calendar for next year. You won’t be sorry. Again, I truly believe that our biker community is special. We can count on those who we call Brothers and Sisters to come to our call when the rubber meets the rode. WWW.CHROMESC.COM 18

I haven't had any questions come in for some time. But that doesn't necessarily translate into me not having anything to say. I am an observer of people and find them to be the lowest cost entertainment available. Bikers especially, (for my uses biker is defined as someone who rides a motorcycle) from watching them line dance to singing karaoke they are always good for a laugh. The new era of bikers brings a lot of new laughs to the table. Now for those who don't know me I will confess to riding around on this planet for quite some time. Got my AARP card and all that. I review my Social Security account on a regular basis and admit that my past is probably considerably longer than my future. Having said that I get a lot of enjoyment watching those not as long in the tooth as I. Recently I was riding and passed a young man pulled off the side of the road and standing near his metric bike. His helmet was on the ground in front of his bike. In years passed that was a sign of a problem. Helmet at rear of bike

or on the seat suggested that things were all good and no help was needed. Maybe just taking a break, having a smoke or adjusting a debilitating wedgie. Not being one to snob a fellow rider I turned around a short distance down the road and returned to help. As I pulled up and asked if I might be of assistance to him (after all I know a little about a lot) I almost blew snot through my nose a he described his dilemma. Apparently, his toe protector for his shifting foot had come off and he was in deep thought as to how he was going to protect his new kicks. I ascertained that I was unable and unwilling to do anything other than belittle him. Momma always taught me that if you can't say anything good then don't say anything at all. But she didn't say anything about typing. So, Dude, Here's to you. Toe protector Guy. Good luck to you and the man you fall in love with. Dr. Dilligaf (Do I look like I’ve got a friend) P.S. To those whom this may offend I encourage you to right a response, I would be very pleased to address your concerns in print.
