THE OUTPOST

BIOLOGICAL FIELD RESEARCH STATION, CHARLESTON, ILLINOIS

Instructor - Scott Murray | Collaborator - Krishna Jayachandran

The “Ridge of the Hill and Edge of the Lake” is a design concept that prioritizes the integration of a building with its natural surroundings, expressly the unique features of the Ridge of the Hill and the Edge of the Lake. They offer unique design opportunities as they aspire to create a harmonious relationship between the building and the natural environment by following the contours of the hill, taking advantage of the views of the lake, and using modularity in planning. The design approach enhances the experience of both researchers and visitors, promoting collaboration and discovery, which is a key

consideration in ecological research. The Outpost’s design strategy emphasizes the importance of creating clear distinctions between public and private spaces in order to support the needs of scientific research while also providing a welcoming and accessible environment for visitors. This is achieved through a carefully choreographed system of movement and circulation that guides people through the space in a way that reinforces these distinctions.

BOUTIQUE ART HOTEL & GALLERY, KYOTO

Instructor - Botond Bognar | Collaborator - Bryant Nunez

“Among the mountains and lamps, we find our place” Art Hotel Kyoto’s concept artfully melds design, nature, and culture, drawing inspiration from Kyoto’s mountains and lamps. It creates a serene, nature-connected oasis with an artistic mountain-shaped gallery and a day-to-night experience mirroring the city’s luminosity, all while seamlessly connecting with Kyoto’s unique identity and culture.

GREENDALE

URBAN PARK RETAIL DEVELOPMENT, COIMBATORE

Instructor

Urban Park Retail Development Coimbatore can be defined as a new typology of mixed-use development where a huge shopping mall with recreation, entertainment, and an innovative co-working space that uniquely blends with different levels of multi-level parkland to form a perfect THIRD PLACE. The Project aims to create a destination center that can combat problems (e.g. E-Commerce) that result to the death of the malls. Ultimately the project intends to be a landmark for the city and to provide a new experience to the people of Coimbatore.

3

“And I Lift up my eyes unto the Hills”

The beautiful and rich natural heritage of the Western Ghats of Coimbatore and Nilgiris was the starting point of the design process. The rolling hills, the lush green tea estates and the beautiful contours were reflected in the form and essence of the building. Simply put the project is intended to be a reminiscence of the hills and valleys nearby.

Site Selection for Retail Development - Coimbatore, situated in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, stands as one of southern India’s largest cities. These include proximity to trade areas, a robust district economy, attractive returns for investors, streamlined land acquisition processes, a consumer base with high disposable income, a youthful demographic of shoppers, active citizenry, and thriving tourism within the district. The project’s core concept is formed by integrating site characteristics, zoning regulations, and the natural geometry of the location.

CO-WORKING HUB IN GREENDALE

The Co-Working space itself is an emerging idea among the young Indian-freelancers, workaholics, students, Entrepreneurs, etc. The aim is to provide a working environment to different types of people with different personality traits. The recent trends show that most of the co-working office spaces are designed for the highly extroverted people and my project aims to create and reconfigure a collaborative workspace for people with different psychological traits (THE BIG PERSONALITY TRAITS) and To consider psychosocial aspects such as Comfortableness, Status, Personalization, and Privacy. Ultimately to focus Corporate aspects such as mobility, Legibility, Sustainability, and image and to consider Physical aspects such as accessibility, Balance, Smell, Touch, Hearing, and Vision. The co-working space finally completes the Urban Park Retail Development making it a perfect third place.

MADRAS CO HOUSING

MULTIFAMILY RESIDENTIAL HOUSING

Instructor - Babu Raj

The project’s objective is to cultivate a vibrant urban community intertwined with lush greenery. Central to this vision is the creation of a verdant oasis, shielded from vehicular traffic—a greenbelt sanctuary. This deliberate design choice not only fosters tranquil living but also strategically positions numerous viewpoints, both within and outside the community, offering residents captivating perspectives of their surroundings. In crafting this multifamily housing concept, the emphasis lies in nurturing a symbiotic relationship between nature and humanity.

4

At its core is a central urban park, serving as the heart of the community and embodying the principles of co-housing. The site is nestled within a lively residential area, surrounded by hospitals, hotels, and temples. Inspired by the tropical essence of Chennai and its sprawling residential landscape and nearby lake, the design harmonizes with its surroundings. Embracing the natural beauty and cultural richness of the area, our vision seeks to create a tranquil oasis amidst the urban hustle and bustle.

ROW HOUSES

The row houses in the gated community are designed in such a way that every unit gets good amount of ventilation and natural lighting which are the most difficult part to achieve. Even though a small individual house the house has a double height hall and a small courtyard facing the hall. The courtyard can be used as a seating space, a spiritual place, a pet area, or even a kitchen garden that-part we leave it to the users.

EYRIE KINDERGARTEN SCHOOL, CHENNAI

The site is located near the Pallikaranai marshland in Chennai were hundreds of birds visit there during migratory period. It’s a paradise for bird watchers. Taking all this into account my design intends to create a School which does not disturb the birds and their habitat nearby rather it provides a place were even inside the school the birds are welcomed bye the green roof. Studies show that the green roof acts as a turf for the migratory birds.

5

Ultimately the design offers the young kindergarten school toddlers a glimpse of beautiful birds even inside the site. The design also provides a library with birdwatching place for the young toddlers to see the nearby marshland, the streams and the birds visiting and get excited !

Instructor - Joseph Altshuler | Collaborators - Harshini Varanasi

Experience the quintessence of roller-coasters in our innovative architectural design, inspired by the Synthetic landscape, Archigram, and Cedric Price’s Fun Palace. Walking into a space where the very essence of a roller-coaster’s exhilarating energy is captured in the design. This vision is not just about physical structures but about evoking the playfulness and excitement that roller-coasters embody.

INSTANT NEIGHBOURHOOD

6
Instant Neighborhood / Concept Diptych 58

At the heart of this design concept lies the intention to foster a deep connection with the community of north lawndale. This connection is nurtured through the ingenious incorporation of plug-in modules, which serve as dynamic elements that adapt to the needs and desires of the community. These modules act as versatile spaces, capable of transforming to accommodate various activities and functions, much like the diverse experiences one encounters on a roller-coaster ride.

THE THING TRANSFORMABLE STRUCTURE

Instructor - Sudarshan Krishnan | Collaborators - Michael Chan, Manali Londhe, Kinjal Bhojani

Transformable structures using translational scissors units are a type of architectural design that allows for a building or structure to be able to transform and adapt to different situations and needs. These structures are made up of interconnected modules that are connected by translational scissors units, which allow for the modules to move and change position relative to one another.

7 The Thing / Transformation from a stowed to a deployed configuration 66

This means that the structure can be adjusted to fit different functions or spaces, such as changing from a single-story building to a multi-story building, or reconfiguring the interior layout to accommodate different activities. Transformable structures using translational scissors units are a promising area of research in architecture and engineering, as they offer a flexible and adaptable solution to the changing needs of modern society.
