A home, seeming to be perched on the cliff overlooks the rocky coast of Peru. The house contrasts the dark shore with lighter elements and stands out as the dream retreat for Courtney. The process began with images she provided that showed her interests. Her favorite images were of modern rooms and buildings with plenty of views out to fantastic views in exotic locations. She also mentioned a number of criteria to design with in mind. Along with the theme of lighter elements, Courtney wanted brightness to be a part of the design, as well as glass and a sense of freshness through breezes in the sea air. She wanted her spaces to be very connected, favoring larger, open spaces to the more enclosed. She also wanted her home to be fun, with elements that worked activity into the movement throughout. Going further into the design criteria was: a kitchen central to cooking and entertaining, an area for games, recreation and sociability, a den or solitary space, ample bedrooms for guests, a courtyard or garden space, a sitable porch, and a tucked away garage. From these needs, the design unfolded into Castillo Rees, a light and open space for living and entertaining. Seen from the sea or beach, the home is a castle of light, air, and glass that frames a waterfall spilling out from the cliff face. When entering the house, either from above on the cliff surface, or below from the driveway, one experiences the first of many spiral staircases that let one out into the main living space which has an expansive view of the ocean. From there, a visitor can explore the active room and den, or the bedroom wing, past the kitchen. From all areas, the view is held to the highest importance. Above the main living areas, a tower exists a space for solitude and reflection. The room at the top of the tower is perfect for any activity- yoga, reading, small social groups and the furniture can be moved about simply; with large wheels on a hardwood surface. Glasswalled, the space gives a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. Overall, Castillo Rees exemplifies a comfortable and breezy getaway to the Peruvian coast.
