Christy Immanuela Roulina Architecture Student at ITB I view myself as an imaginative and observant person. Common, everyday things in nature insipire me. Some of the topics i’m interested in architecture are human behaviour, material technology and also energy efficiency through design (building physics).

Through my experience in various organization projects, working in a team has been a thing i’m accustomed to. Apart from that, some of my character strength are responsibility, objective decision making, and empathy/sensibility. On the other side, there are areas i want to elevate such as efficiency in working and attention to detail. Albeit my flaws, i am always eager to improve myself, and i believe this internship will provide the opportunity to do so.

I am looking forward to learn about working in interdisciplinary projects, as well as sharpening my skils by working alongside professionals.

Aksara Business and Community Center takes place across Bandung Insitute of Technology. The brief provided aims to design a space that initiate interaction between alumnus and civitas of ITB, furhermore to collaborate together in various innovative projects. Besides that, the business & innovation center needs to cater to the needs of people in general, and has a sustainable managing system.

To aid the needs mentioned above, this building provides rentable spaces and public space for tenants and visitors.These spaes will provoke collaboration among visitors. through daily serendipities that occur.

CONCEPT

The building is located near by ITB University, and is crossed by two street: 1. Jl. Ganesha (larger traffic) 2. Jl. Ciungwenara (subtler traffic)

The face of ground floor facing Jl. Ganesha is pulled back to create a sheletered entrance for pedestrians.

Connectivity between levels are optimized by creating visual exposure inside the building. This also leads to more interaction and lively atmosphere among the visitors.

Another story with shorter floorto-floor height is added, as a way to access the green roof on top of the 1st floor.

To fulfill the concept of visual connection inside the building, as well as increasing energy efficiency, a leaf-shaped mass is taken away. The strategy created a void that corresponds also to the shape of the ramp within.

To create harmony with the surrounding buildings, the exterior facade uses warm toned brick for roster, and white plaster wall for the massive parts.

Although the design is relatively more modern, the colors selected helps in creating conformity.

Ground Floor Plan

First Floor Plan

The ground floor can be accessed through 2 entrance, which are Jl. Ganesha (main) and Jl. Ciungwenara (secondary). Standing in +0.80 meter elevation, the ground floor are meant for more public activities. The retail spaces are all oriented towards the indoor garden in the middle of this building. To go upstairs a curved ramp is provided, and it also function as a viewing platform for performances held in the platform.

The first floor are meant for activities that needed more concentration and calmness.

Some function this floor provides are open layout coworking spaces, rentable meeting rooms with a variation of sizes, developer’s office, and medium sized auditorium hall.

Fig 01. A curved ramp is equipped as the primary circulation on Aksara Business & Community Center. Skylight opening provided natural lighting for the activities inside, increasing productivity amongst the visitors.

Secondary, Pedestrian Entrance Fig 0xx. The western part of the building opens up to pedestrians, coming from XX street. The site is located just across Bandung Institute of Technology, therefore there will be many pedestrians, hence this ‘shortcut’ entrance is provided. From this entrance, visitors are greeted by retail shops and the curved ramp leading up to the second floor.

Resting Space Fig 01. It’s easy to feel burned out when one is surrounded by a lot of people & things to do. This resting space is provided just beside the co-working space, as a place to relax and recharge.

Both the resting space and the co-working space area located in the western part of 2nd floor.

Co-Working Space Fig 02. The opening of co-working space is oriented to nortth. Glazed panels are chosen to let in optimum natural lighting, yet lower heat gain. Productivity increases with suitable exposure of sunlight.

3rd Year Studio Project Supervisor: Ir. Tri Yuwono, M.T.

Standing in the midst of air-polluted streets of an urban setting, LIPUR Innovation is intended as a halt sign. A space to catch a breath and enjoy the festive Sundanese culture that fills the space.

The three masses (Hiji, Salayan, and Tilu building) stand on sloping ground, which leads to a multi-elevation concept that maximizes the opportunity of landscape viewing points.

Design Concept

There are 3 masses that are sequenced according to the sloping ground, and most of the openings are orented to green conservation area on the western part of the site. Each of the mass differ in function.

1. On the left (Hiji). Mainly for community activities.

2. In the middle (Salayan). Community & commercial activities.

3. On the right (Tilu). Mainly for commercial activities.

The design aims to utilize the significant sloping contour as an experience for visitors who are exploring the building by feet. The main circulation is through the Salayan building, and across the field to get to the other two.

Ground Floor Plan

First Floor Plan

Activities on ground floor are meant for public use. The main circulation has slightly different elevation, and are connected by ramp so that it can be used universally.

Visitors can access the first floor through each mass, and a sky bridge is built to connect Mass A and C, which function as foodcourt and commercial loby. The first floor of mass B function as exhibition room, hence it can only be accessed from the semi outdoor corridor in between.

Semi-outdoor Spaces Hiji and Salayan Building is connected by an outdoor corridor, creating ambiguous boundary between outdoor and indoor spaces. The semi outdoor opening of both masses are designed to increase nature exposure, therefore creating a nature-infused indoor space. Supporting the idea mentioned, natural materials are used with minimum finishing, giving off a really raw experience for visitors.

Balance between privacy and openness creates a peaceful living condition in a communal living environment. Those are the main aspects incorporated in the design of “Rumah Sapa”, a 3-story dormitory meant for female students and young workers.

CONCEPT

The origin volume is a rectangular shape with longer orientation from front to back.

First and foremost, the mass are divided into public and private areas. This decision is deemed crucial for the tenants demographic are female college student and employees.

The mass on the left which is for public are reduced, and turned into garden space, which is the main pathway to entrance.

Vertical circulation are located on 3 spots. On the private mass, 2 stairs are provided due to the long and straight circulation.

One of the most important facade element is Roster Wall. Located in the front and back area of the dormitory, the roster wall helps in reducing heat gain, excessive sunlight, also increase natural air flow.

Site Plan The site is located in high-density housing area, and can be accessed through Jl. Tubagus Ismail XVI, which is a local street. Facilities nearby are mainly restaurants/cafe, but there are also a few laundry stores etc.

Corridors & Main Vertical Circulation Some of the dorm unit can be accessed from outside. The semi outdoor corridors allow the tenants to connect more with nature, and relieve the feeling of being trapped in a single unit everyday. The roster wall filter out excessive heat and light, giving subtle shadows that are always moving and can be felt by tenants going upstairs.

Communal Room Fig 01. The communal room for the tenants is a mix of living room and open kitchen. Activities are further defined by different elevations. The door on the right leads to tenant rooms, and on the left leads to the owner’s residence. The living room is designed with double height ceiling, so visitors feel welcome and relieved when first coming into this room.

Outdoor Entrance Fig 02. Outdoor corridors increase the connection to natural elements. To reduce heat from the dorm units, there are buffer space which function as corridor. Also, the site’s sloping elevation helps increase security because of the height difference between units and the parking lot area at the front.

Lapis Lazuli Observatorium

Initial Form & Concept Lapis Lazuli Observatorium is created by Form-Finding method. Materials used at the early design is paper, to create possibilities of folded structure.

The final design mainly conisted of steel materials, which are as follows: 1. Steel pipe as framework 2. Aluminium panels as folded surface.

3. Ball joint to connect the batang, which are customized due to it’s unique angles.

Load Distribution The external load will fall on the hillside of the fold and the end of the fold support. Then the aluminum and glass panels as will transmit the load to the valley area from the folds. The distribution of the load will eventually end in the pedestal which will then be channeled into the ground.

Model Making The main features of this structure is blue-tinted glass panel windows, and entrances created by fold. This project is done in a group of two, and we created this maquette with construct paper, blue-tinted mika plastic, and clay.

Top View When it’s seen from straight above, the triangular modules create an illusion of a star. This is a concept we tried to bring, correlating with it’s function which is observatorium.

Maquette Detail The steps done to create this form are as follows: First we mark triangular module on paper, cutting out the necessary part, and add details with mika plastic, PVC pipe, and clay.

EPILOGUE ITB

as Project Officer

Epilogue ITB is an annual exhibition held by architecture student association of ITB (IMA-G). to display fresh graduate’s final year project. Held on October of 2021, 53 architecture projects are displayed on a website based exhibition. The event was held from October 30th to November 8th, 2021.

Team member: 24 supporting staff of IMA-G ITB.

FACADE (2021) Sayembara facade menangkat tema new normal, membangun ruang yang merestorasi interaksi antar pengunjung, yang semakin merenggang akibat pandemi yang panjang.

Dari tema ini dipilih untuk membangun co-working space serta viewing deck di tepi danau di Rawamangun, Jakarta. Konsep massing diambil dari sudut yang melancip, seakan menunjuk ke arah danau yang luas. Bangunan ini mengangkat konsep ruang yang semi outdoor sebagai strategi pencegahan penularan covid.

ArchiRAY VII (2020) “A cure for loneliness”

Mengangkat konsep garis dan simpul, Lingkar Temu merupakan taman publik yang berusaha menghubungkan pengunjung, membangun interaksi di era coronavirus yang tidak menentu dan penuh kesepian.

ARCHINESIA ARCHINESIA Bookgazine (Architecture Network in Southeast Asia) merupakan entitas yang bergerak di bidang publishing, baik secara printed maupun acara annual dengan target arsitek di Asia Tenggara.

Kontribusi saya selama bervolunteer selama 4 bulan meliputi membuat konten grafis, menulis konten informasi arsitektural, serta turut menjadi panitia penyelenggara Sharing Session ARCHINESIA.

as Illustrator

Dari Mata Kaki is a community that focuses on spreading mental health awareness via social media platform, mainly instagram. Working alongside 2 other illustrators in transforming text contents into digital illustrations.

ITB MUN 2021 (MODEL UNITED NATION) as Head of Design ITB Model United Nation (ITBMUN) 2021 is a series of online conferences, webinars and competitions held by Ganesha MUN Club. Through managing a team of 13, the design team produced graphic contents for the event: social media publications, official documents, merchandise, etc. The main event of iTBMUN was held on May 28th to May 30th, with 150+ participants from students worldwide.
