The Kingdom of God is at hand, Repent and believe in the Gospel.

In today's Gospel, at the beginning of the Lenten season, St. Mark tells us how Jesus was taken into the desert. Right there, during forty days and forty nights, He suffered temptation. Jesus went to the desert, the place where He would find the condemned humanity, to rescue it, and to re-open the route to the place where all our sins are forgiven.

Forty days represented a period of need, testing, and toil in preparation for a relationship with God. The number forty is highly significant for the Jewish people. Forty days and forty nights lasted the rain during the flood in Noah's time; it was a sign of destruction and purification, followed by a new beginning. The prophet Elijah traveled forty days in the desert to the Horeb Mt where he found God face to face. For forty years, the Israelites were wandering in the desert before entering into the Promised Land.

Nowadays, there is a hidden danger for anybody.

It consists in temptations apparently inoffensive and loaded with compassion, backed with scripture references, and custom dressed as good intentions. They force people into wrong beliefs, without any respect for their capacity to discern between what is truth, and what is false. Their real intention is never exposed until our mind is already prepared for what they really want. The invitation today is to anchor ourselves before what is truthful and eternal. Let us understand that lent is much more than only fasting and doing penance for our sins; Lent is also a preparation period to joyfully appreciate Easter. During this our Lenten season, let us begin our journey to walk back our way from desert to paradise.

En el evangelio de este primer Domingo de Cuaresma, San Marcos nos narra cómo Jesús es llevado al desierto. Ahí, por cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, sufriría tentación. Jesús va al desierto, al lugar donde encontrara al hombre condenado para poder regresarlo al paraíso, al lugar donde sus faltas le serán perdonadas.

Trong Tin Mừng hôm nay, bắt đầu mùa chay, Thánh sử Máccô cho chúng ta biết Đức Giêsu được đưa vào sa mạc như thế nào. Chính tại nơi đó, trong bốn mươi ngày và bốn mươi đêm, Người đã chịu cám dỗ. Đức Giêsu đã vào sa mạc, nơi mà Người thấy nhân loại bị kết án, để cứu vớt họ, và mở lại con đường để mọi tội lỗi của chúng ta được tha thứ.

Cuarenta días representan un periodo de necesidad, pruebas, y lucha en preparación para una relación con Dios. El numero cuarenta es altamente simbólico para el pueblo de Israel.

Cuarenta días y cuarenta noches tardo el diluvio en los tiempos de Noé; un signo de destrucción y purificación de todo mal, seguido por un nuevo principio, un renacer. El profeta Elías viajo cuarenta días por el desierto hacia el monte Horeb donde encontró a Dios cara a cara. Cuarenta años vagaron los Israelitas antes de entrar a la tierra prometida.

Hoy en día, existe un verdadero peligro para todos nosotros. El peligro es que las tentaciones, aparentemente inofensivas y con apariencia de compasión son respaldadas por pasajes de la escritura, y siempre vienen disfrazadas de buenas intenciones. Las tentaciones forzan gente a creer equivocadamente, sin jamás respetar su libertad para discernir entre lo que es falso, y lo que es verdadero. Su verdadera intención jamás aparece, hasta que nuestra mente ha sido preparada para otro propósito. La invitación de hoy consiste en aferrarnos a lo que es verdadero y eterno.

Descubramos que cuaresma no es sólo ayuno y penitencia por nuestros pecados, cuaresma es también un tiempo de preparación para el gozo de la pascua. Emprendamos hoy, con gozo, nuestra jornada de regreso del desierto al paraíso.

Bốn mươi ngày tiêu biểu cho một thời gian cần thiết, thử thách, và tôi luyện để chuẩn bị cho mối tương giao với Thiên Chúa. Con số bốn mươi có một ý nghĩa quan trọng đối với dân Do Thái. Suốt bốn mươi ngày và bốn mươi đêm mưa rơi ròng rã trong trận lụt thời ông Nô-e; đây là dấu chỉ của sự phá hủy và thanh luyện để cho một khởi sự mới. Tiên tri Êlia đã hành trình bốn mươi ngày trong sa mạc đến núi Hô-rép để được gặp nhan thánh Chúa. Bốn mươi năm dân Is-ra-en đi trong sa mạc trước khi vào Đất Hứa.

Ngày nay, thực sự có một mối nguy hiểm cho tất cả chúng ta. Điều nguy hiểm là những cám dỗ, dường như vô hại và có vẻ ngoài của lòng trắc ẩn, lại được hỗ trợ bởi những đoạn Kinh thánh và luôn được ngụy trang dưới dạng những thiện chí. Những cám dỗ làm người ta tin sai, không tôn trọng quyền tự do của họ để phân biệt sự thật và sai lầm. Ý định thực sự của con người không bao giờ được bộc lộ cho tới khi trí năng của chúng ta đã chuẩn bị cho điều người ta thực sự muốn Lời mời gọi hôm nay là hãy đặt chúng ta trước những gì là chân thật và vĩnh cửu. Chúng ta cần hiểu rằng mùa chay còn mang nhiều ý nghĩa hơn là ch̉i ăn chay và làm việc đền tội; Mùa chay còn là thời gian chuẩn bị để đón nhận giá trị đích thực của lễ Phục Sinh trong niềm hân hoan.

Trong suốt mùa chay này, chúng ta hãy bắt đầu cuộc hành trình từ sa mạc trở về thiên đường.
