What is Unitive Coaching?

The Unitive™ approach to coaching is not based on any pre-conceived theory or set of beliefs, but has evolved organically over a period of years as a result of its founder, Charles Bentley PhD’s extensive research and experience in the field of gestalt and humanistic psychology.

It’s a twenty-first century re-affirmation of an insight that has been part and parcel of human awareness since time immemorial - that the psyche (our mind and feelings) and the soma (our mechanisms for perceiving and reacting to the physical world) are indivisible.

Unitive coaching is a holistic approach to developing human potential that enables clients to develop their own authentic response to life's challenges in a safe and secure coaching relationship. As its name suggests, it aims for an internal unity - a resolution of the polar opposites that hold people back from being their true selves.

From an organisational point of view, it achieves high levels of efficiency by the application of the most effective techniques in people management and development. At the individual level, it sets out to promote personal authenticity; to achieve the self-understanding needed to cope with hidden feelings, to empathise with those of others, and to develop inner confidence and stability.

What’s so different about our Unitive coaching course ?

Our course is as distinctive as our coaching approach. It is not about being trained to apply a simplistic set of processes, techniques and facile ‘solutions’ to deal with a limited range of hypothetical problems. Instead we work with you as a unique individual in a series of one-to-one tutorials, enabling you to develop your own authentic approach to coaching others. It is highly experiential and practical rather than just theoretical.

You will be able to develop your natural potential for this work rather than having to fit into a preconceived mould.

As our approach is tailored to the individual, we are not into catch-all, sales-based marketing methods. We don’t offer mass-produced training solutions. Acceptance into the programme is by mutual consent after an initial session, and only if we feel you have a latent, instinctive gift and potential talent for this kind of work.

What is the format of the course?

The format is a combination of one-to-one individual tutorial and mentoring sessions and a small-group two-day workshop. The steep learning curves achieved result in dramatic improvement in personal motivation and self-esteem. The approach, whether group or individually based, is experiential throughout: that is, the focus always remains on what is actually taking place at any given moment. There are no scripted or pre-set routines; no abstract theorising or 'psychobabble', role-playing games or set exercises. The entire coaching process therefore becomes a uniquely relevant experience - tailor-made to fit the immediate needs of each person taking part.

Who will it benefit?

The programme is designed to meet the specific requirements of highly-motivated and committed individuals working within a broad spectrum of demanding professional, corporate and media environments. This includes those who intend to start their own life coaching practice, or want to offer a complementary service to their existing clients, or presently work with people in a wide variety of professional and management roles and wish to develop their interpersonal skills.

The programme delivers an effectual combination of proven resource skills and intuitive insight development that will promote personal growth and productivity and raise interpersonal communication levels.

What issues does the course cover?

Each workshop or individual session within the coaching course framework is highly tuned to each participant’s needs and designed to address those particular issues that have the greatest personal impact and immediate relevancy. The focus is always on self-managed learning - to enable participants to improve their capability and coping skills within a wide range of presenting work, professional and personal situations.

The basic concepts of Unitive Coaching The Unitive coaching process sets out to provide a secure and supportive framework within which people may work with the human process of change. Its unique approach to the process of self-discovery is not only eminently practical but also covers every aspect of the whole person: at the rational level, it works experientially to bring to awareness obsolete and redundant patterns of acquired behaviour at the emotional level it seeks to reconcile spontaneous feelings with intellectual Insight at a psychological level, it aims to empower individuals with self-knowledge and the strength of their unique authenticity at the higher, integrated level of intuition, its goal is to facilitate personal development on issues of imagination, spirit and creativity The first requirement for those who intend to communicate effectively in an honest and open dialogue with other people is that they are up to speed with their own developmental homework. To act authentically as an effective resource to others on their individual pathways through life, you first need to be thoroughly conversant with your own home territory. You can’t take anyone further than you’ve travelled yourself.

Personal authenticity is all about experiencing each event in life in the light of present reality, instead of through the distorting mirrors of the past. In order to access your innate sources of personal wisdom, you’ll need first to let go of those bits of your previously acquired stuff that’s now become useless – to cast off your old protective clothing and immerse yourself completely in whatever new experience life may come up with. Once you’ve become part of that experience, your entire being – mind, body and spirit – will become an instrument for opening up receptive channels of communication between your own true responses and those of the people who share your present environment. Instead of trying to influence events from the outside, you’ll find you’ve become an integral part of them. It’s a magical process: experiencing the power of the present instead of just observing it.

Within yourself you have the potential to integrate your internalised conflicts into a unified whole, greater than the sum of its separate parts.

The ultimate goal of Unitive Coaching is to facilitate this liberating insight. The true purpose of human existence is to accept and to commit to present reality and the inevitable imperfections of life and all who live it. …and in that very imperfection, each individual can experience the truth and beauty of authentic being and the possibility of spontaneous change.
