HELLO!

THE RIGHT SIZE. THE RIGHT PLACE. THE RIGHT PEOPLE.

welcome to

WHERE IT ALL BEGINS

THE RIGHT SIZED COMMUNITY For many it’s somewhere between a town and a city. It’s a place that has cultural offerings like theaters, a performing arts center and a summer music festival. It provides strong schools, colleges and universities. It offers recreational facilities like an ice rink, waterpark, a kayaking venue and cliff climbing. As this guide will show you, Springfield is just such a community — large enough to support abundant city amenities, but small enough so that all can work together and allow Springfield to be stronger than the sum of its parts. EASY ACCESS TO WORK, HOME AND FUN

———— he very thing that makes the community easy to get around in for social, business and recreational purposes also makes it easy to get around in, period. Those who live and work in the Greater Springfield area have no commutes to speak of. Instead, they use their “drive time” to head to Columbus to see the Blue Jackets or Buckeyes, to Dayton to see a UD game or the minor league Reds affiliate, the Dragons. And in just a few more minutes, they can be at the Great American Ballpark or the zoo in Cincinnati, or slip across the river to the Newport Aquarium.

———— n addition to being in an ideal location for families to take in a wide variety of activities, Springfield’s location on Interstate 70 just half an hour from the junction of Interstate 75 makes it a perfect place to do business. Sixtyone percent of the nation’s population is within 600 miles, and a municipal airport makes it more convenient for those whose business is done in aeronautical miles. A variety of industrial parks also make it a place where industries can easily park themselves for a promising future.

———— Melody Parks is a new, mixed-use development on Route 40, less than 2 miles west of I-70. This 400-acre community will offer starter and move-up single-family homes, well-appointed apartments, and convenient neighborhood-focused businesses like banks, restaurants, coffee shops, and retail shopping. When complete, it will include over 1200 total housing units, and 20 acres of commercial businesses. With 14 parks and over 80 acres of green space, there will be nature walks, bike paths and pedestrian trails. Melody Parks encourages walkability and community. This neighborhood will be unlike anything that the greater Springfield community has experienced in over 40 years.

———— The project includes the renovation of the historic building at the corner of E High St and Limestone St that was once the home of the beloved Wren department store, along with the addition of a new 4 story structure of similar proportions on the vacant lot on its west side. The combined structures will include approximately 83 market-rate apartment units with tall windows and high ceilings, some that contain exposed historic mushroom columns. The street level storefronts will be reinstated to for over 6,000 square feet of retail space along High and Limestone Streets. On-site parking will be provided on the vacant south lot that will connect to the basements to provide covered parking for more than half of the units.

Borror, a developer from Columbus, has invited Arbor Homes and Fischer Homes to Springfield to build new homes. Land development started in December 2023, and homes will be for sale in Summer of 2024.

Other amenities proposed for the residents include a street level lounge, a roof level community room and roof deck, a fitness room and on-site pet center.

SPRINGFIELD RECOGNIZED FOR QUALITY OF LIFE

———— When you choose to make your home in Springfield, you can rest assured you’ll have a great life at a great price. In fact, Forbes magazine recognized our affordable living and great quality of life, ranking Springfield the 8th best place to live inexpensively in the United States.

TOURING TIP

Before the coming of Social Security programs, Springfield was the location of state children’s homes for the Knights of Pythias, International Order of Odd Fellows and Ohio Masons and of the Oesterlen Lutheran Orphans Home. The Masonic Home’s main building, for obvious reasons nicknamed “The Castle,” still dominates the crest of a hill along Ohio 40 on the city’s west side.

TO SEE Harry Kissell’s handiwork in the Ridgewood neighborhood, take a drive up Fountain Avenue from McCreight Avenue to Home Road.

SMALL TOWNS & RURAL SCENES

The Villages of Clark County Nearly one-half of Clark County’s population lives in our smaller cities and villages. If a small town or rural setting is what you are looking for, take a stroll down New Carlisle’s main street or take in the acres of farmland that surround South Charleston and you’ll see why so many of our residents call these areas home.

New Carlisle Clark County’s second largest city, with 6,000 residents, New Carlisle enjoys a vibrant downtown and is just minutes away from the I-70 / I-75 intersection — the “crossroads of America.”

Enon Once a bedroom community for Dayton, Enon, with its 2,400 residents has grown in its own right as the headquarters of Speedway/7-Eleven LLC and the home of a $14.5 million, 11,000 square foot freestanding emergency department.

South Charleston Few communities embrace their history like the home of the regionally known South Charleston Opera House and the zip code for many of the area’s farmers.

South Vienna Home of the national large-equipment auctioneers, Ritchie Brothers, and the South Vienna Corn Festival, the village of 400 residents embraces its agricultural roots.

———— Thanks to our great location, the amenities of living in Springfield extend beyond the county line. With Ohio’s capital city Columbus to our east and the state’s third-largest city Cincinnati to our south, big-city entertainment, shopping and dining are just an hour or two away. Nationwide Arena, Ohio Stadium and King’s Island amusement park are within an hour’s drive; the University of Dayton and the Dayton Dragons minor league baseball are 30 minutes away; and Cincinnati’s Great American Ballpark, Paul Brown Stadium and the Newport Aquarium, just across the Ohio River, are just a couple of hours away.

HARTMAN ROCK GARDEN

FERNCLIFF CEMETERY AND ARBORETUM

A FOLK ART TREASURE

A WO O D ED D R IVE

————

With more time than money on his hands during the Great Depression, self-taught artist Ben Hartman created one of the great folk art contributions to Ohio by building scenes of religion, pop culture and Americana in his yard at 1905 Russell Ave. A recently awarded $75,000 grant by the Ruth Foundation for the Arts will help the Hartman Rock Garden to begin planning for a new visitor’s center, enhance efforts to conserve its stone figurines, and make other improvements. The Hartman Rock Garden is a nationally-recognized visionary art environment. Ben drew inspiration from family and friends, as well as from magazines, books, radio, and film. This was a deeply personal space, meant to promote his ideals and values to the larger world. The new visitor’s center will provide a better experience for the 13,000 visitors who come every year.

Architectural Treasures FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT’S WESTCOTT HOUSE

JUST WRIGHT AND MORE

———— Frank Lloyd Wright’s Westcott House, brought back to life lovingly during a $5.8 million restoration, shines as a centerpiece of Springfield amenities. A tour of the 1908 Prairie style home with its striking horizontal lines and organic color scheme is a must. As lovely as it is, however, the house that Wright designed for Springfield automaker Burton Westcott hasn’t just parked itself and sat idling. It has added the Westcott Center of Architecture and Design, a vibrant center for preservation, innovation, education and inspiration. ARCHITECTURAL TOUR

RICHARDSON ROMANESQUE

———— Before Frank Lloyd Wright, H. H. Richardson was America’s premier architect. His Richardson Romanesque style is found all over the city. The finest example is the Warder Literacy Center (1890), at the corner of Spring and High Streets, industrialist Benjamin Warder’s tribute to his loving parents. Amidst the handsome multi-colored stone work, keep an eye out for an owl that guards the property. The Bushnell Building (1903) sits in the city’s core while the Bushnell Mansion—now the Richards, Raff & Dunbar Memorial Home—once served as the spectacular anchor to a stretch of High Street once called Millionaire’s Row. S O U T H F O U N TA I N H I S T O R I C A L D I S T R I C T

QUEEN ANNE STYLE

———— Those whose architectural tastes run to gingerbread will want to take in the sumptuous Victorian homes in the South Fountain Avenue Historic District. The neighborhood is a tribute not only to the distinctive architecture, but to a community of Springfielders dedicated to preserving architecture and the richness of urban neighborhood living.

———— Founded in 1863 in the midst of the Civil War, Ferncliff Cemetery and Arboretum is a beautiful and peaceful place year round. For a daytime drive through the wooded hills past elegant mausoleums and placid ponds, go west on McCreight Avenue to the main entrance, or find the Plum Street entrance just south of Buck Creek.

———— The Pennsylvania House, commonly known as “The Inn at the End of the Pike,” opened in 1839 to provide a welcome relief for pioneers heading west on the National Road. The beautifully restored 24-room house museum and its artifacts is maintained by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Another tribute to the road and its travelers stands in the downtown park, National Road Commons. In 2011, the Daughters of the American Revolution gave their blessing to move the circa-1928 Madonna of the Trail statue to the new downtown park. One of 12 statues commissioned by the DAR in 1927, the Madonna honors the courage and sacrifice of the country’s founding mothers. H E R I TA G E C E N T E R

———— Beneath the clock tower of the grand old city building, time doesn’t stand still — it comes alive. The Heritage Center tells the story of the area in two floors of exhibits plus an annex that houses old fire engines, a horse-drawn hearse and the accoutrements of undertaking past.

Pictured on the right and on on cover. ———— Springfield’s Public Art Committee has actively worked to identify spaces in Springfield’s core to highlight with a variety of public art pieces. This mural came to be from a collaboration of the committee, WesBanco, The Greater Springfield Partnership and The Westcott House. Moseley was chosen to be featured in the mural because of her role in the desegregation of Springfield’s Fulton School. The mural depicts Moseley holding Fulton in her arms, and she is surrounded in the background by a variety of wildflowers native to Ohio. Through her many roles, Moseley took a no-nonsense approach that allowed her to secure jobs and improve the livelihood of many people. The mural provided the Public Art Committee the opportunity to connect with Moseley’s family and involve them in the creation of the piece. Internationally renowned artist Gaia and his assistant Bilal Johnson-Bey spent just more than two weeks in Springfield creating the mural. Gaia paints murals around the world and has worked on a variety of creative placemaking projects. He spent times talking with the public while he worked, including during the Oct. 7, First Friday. “Our goal is to create art that everyone can access and enjoy,” says Marta Wojcik, Westcott House executive director and a member of the Springfield Public Art Committee. “Public art makes our Downtown more attractive and memorable. It is also a great tool for civic engagement, and, of course, a way to support the artists. “Through our mural projects, we have invited our community to celebrate Springfield history and raise public awareness about important community issues.” This project is funded by the Springfield Public Art Committee in partnership with the Westcott House Foundation responsible for securing grant funding through the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Ohio Arts Council, and the City of Springfield. Our city school district is made up of 10 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 1 high school, and the school of innovation. While they offer unique options at all grade levels, our middle school and high school students have seen the most striking growth in educational options as we now allow students to blend traditional coursework, on-line coursework, and experiential learning.

Our six county school districts – Northeastern, Northwestern, Greenon, Clark-Shawnee, Tecumseh and Southeastern – consistently see high graduation rates of students prepared for career, college or military services. Career and college readiness is a focus in the county schools with various popular programs such as fine arts, JROTC, FFA, College Credit Plus and more.

The Clark County Educational Service Center is a partner for your local schools here in Clark County - we collaborate with districts to offer high-quality services to students through shared services. The shared services model allows districts to defray costs of offering exceptional services to make the most of our local tax dollars.

CLARK STATE COLLEGE

WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY

Hometown Clark State College helped to pioneer two-year, post-high school education in Ohio. Its students, traditional and non-traditional, have more than 125 degree and certificate programs from which to choose. The college works hand in hand with local employers to create training and certificate programs tailored for local workforce needs.

Since 1845, Wittenberg University has set a standard of excellence both in liberal arts education and small college (now Division III) athletics. In more recent years, women’s field hockey and volleyball teams have begun to add to the powerhouse tradition in men’s football and basketball. Endowment of the Sarah Hirt Hagen Center for Civic and Urban Engagement has strengthened ties with Springfield. To serve the community more directly, the university is also bringing a liberal arts flavor to more career-oriented offerings, including a bachelor’s in nursing program, a criminal justice program and an accounting degree completion program.

The curriculum includes the new Advanced Manufacturing Program that focuses on welding, additive manufacturing, CNC, and Industrial Maintenance which was funded by a $2.5M grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS HAVE LONG BEEN AN IMPORTANT SEGMENT OF EDUCATION IN CLARK COUNTY.

CATHOLIC CENTRAL SCHOOLS Catholic Central Schools, a K through 12 program, is prepared for the future with a $6.3 million building expansion to better accommodate its program of students with exceptional college acceptance rates.

EMMANUEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Emmanuel Christian Academy, which educates from preschool through high school, provides a Christian-based education on a gleaming campus at Springfield’s north end.

RIDGEWOOD SCHOOL The school’s 1st through 8th grade program is one of the oldest independent co-ed schools in the state. Its students regularly become leaders in the high schools of their choice.

NIGHTINGALE MONTESSORI

EXPANDING LOCAL HIGHER ED OPPORTUNITIES

Nightingale Montessori is the area’s only Montessori school, providing an individually focused education for students in grades K through 12.

SPRINGFIELD CHRISTIAN SCHOOL CEDARVILLE UNIVERSITY Vibrant Cedarville University is a 20-minute drive south. Carrying a proud 125year Christian tradition, it has established itself as a top-flight university with a wide range of offerings, with strength in the science and health fields. Cedarville’s Yellow Jackets are a longtime powerhouse in the Division II Great Midwest Athletic Conference, but the university has even more pride in its celebration of Biblical truths.

SCS provides students in Pre-K through 8th grade an excellent education rooted in the certainty that all truth is God’s truth. They are committed to nurturing each child’s spiritual and academic development.

ANTIOCH UNIVERSITY MIDWEST Antioch University Midwest, in nearby Yellow Springs, provides a convenient way for adults to complete their bachelor’s degrees or to tailor individualized master’s programs to fit their career plans. The university’s Ph.D. in Leadership and Change has established itself as a program that fits its time, and online and overseas studies provide flexibility that makes it possible to fit meaningful learning into the context of busy lives.

ANTIOCH COLLEGE In the spirit of its first president, Horace Mann, Antioch College in Yellow Springs provides a rigorous liberal arts education with the belief that scholarship and life experience are strengthened when linked, that diversity in all its manifestations is a fundamental component of excellence in education, and that authentic social and community engagement is vital for those who strive to win victories for humanity.

DID YOU KNOW? Clark County and Springfield have also gained notoriety thanks to the National Road, which still runs through the city. In 1839, the road made its way to Springfield, but a lapse in federal funding caused construction of the road to stall for a decade. During that time, Springfield became known as “the City at the End of the Road.”
