Greetings SSWAG Members: I am honored and excited to welcome you all to the 2014 Spring Conference in Savannah, GA. The theme for this year’s conference is “School Social Workers: Courage, Hope, and Leadership”. School social workers exemplify these principles on a daily basis through our work with students, families, the school community, and stakeholders. The unique and enriching challenges of working as school social workers are intrinsically rewarding, as we revel and look for opportunities to increase students’ and families’ wellbeing and functioning in a rapidly changing society. As a result, I am optimistic that the presenters will offer new and refreshing information that will inform your practice as a school social worker. During this conference, I hope that you will have an opportunity to reflect on the difference that you have made to students, families, school, and communities. A special thank you goes to the Spring Conference planning committee, long range planning committee, and the SSWAG sponsors who have helped to make this year’s conference a success. Moreover, we are thrilled to have an impressive roster of presenters who are eager to share their knowledge. So roll up your sleeves, soak up the information, and kick up your heels. Also, please take the time to enjoy some of the amenities that the beautiful city of Savannah has to offer, including the cuisine, sandy beaches, and shopping. This past year as the president of the School Social Workers Association of Georgia has been an honor and pleasure for me to serve such a humble and selfless group of passionate people. During my tenure as the president, I have been exceptionally blessed to work with a committed and talented group of members who served on the SSWAG Executive Board, and the support of the SSWAG membership has helped our organization to attain several major goals and objectives. In closing, the School Social Workers Association of Georgia is strong due to the talent and support of our members, and I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for supporting me as the president. Finally, I am excited to formally announce that I have accepted the School Social Work Consultant position which is part of the statewide Student Support Services Project at the University of South Florida/Florida Department of Education. In this position, I will have the responsibility of providing leadership and technical assistance to school social workers, school districts, and university training programs, along with implementing evidence based services in a multi-tiered system of supports for students across Florida. ETHICS IN EVIDENCED BASED PRACTICES Presenter: Sally vander Straeten, ACSW This ethics workshop will examine the ethical principle of Competence in the Social Work code of Ethics that states “Social workers should base practices on recognized knowledge, including empirically based knowledge, relevant to social work and social work ethics.” Strategies to identify /develop evidence-based practices and interventions/programs with particular attention to maintaining fidelity and culturally appropriate practice will be explored with examples relevant to school social work. 12:00 – 1:30 P.M. Forsyth How to Approach Serious Mental Illness In Schools Presenter: Kristin Mize, LCSW This workshop will identify the mental illnesses that impact our youth and how that translates into the classroom, the prodromal or early signs of serious mental illness, how to intervene at the school/ classroom level for effective outcomes, demystify psychosis – it is not scary and it CAN be treated, combat stigma around mental illness, and provide resources for school social workers to support their practice. Franklin * Exiting the Trap & Navigating the Wilderness (Assimilation, Acculturation, and Negotiation) Presenters: Adam Haizlip, Michelle Allen, & Andrea Glover Participants can expect to be engaged in a lively and interactive “Courageous Conversation” focused on Culturally Responsive Praxis in the social work arena. Attendees should additionally expect to engage in a constructivist conversation bringing forth both theoretical and practical meanings and implications of assimilation, acculturation and negotiation of dominant socio- cultural praxis. Through exploration of various identity models we will discuss the frequency of code-switching and its detrimental consequences to one’s self-esteem, self-efficacy and healthy identity formation. Johnson * Keeping More Than Dreams Alive: Overcoming the Silent Epidemic of Youth Suicide Presenter: Jason Foundation, Inc. Each week across our nation and in our communities, we are losing approximately 100 young people to the silent epidemic of youth suicide. Many people believe that suicide is impulsive and therefore hard to prevent, but 4 out of 5 young people have given clear warning signs in the days, weeks, or months prior to the act of taking their lives. This presentation is designed to create increased awareness, educate those in the “Triangle of Prevention”, and lead to changes in actions. BREAKOUT SESSIONS Johnson McKinney-Vento: Making Data Count Presenter: Erica Glenn This session will provide participants with the most recent updates on coding homeless children and youth and provide them with important information for the 2014 Homeless survey. The focus will be on collaboration with the homeless liaison, the local educational agency System Information team, and the registrars to ensure that all children are coded properly and in a timely manner. Franklin Operation Education-Military Students Also Serve! Presenter: Tabeter Moore Participants will be able to understand why military connected students need immediate, intense, and on-going support. These students move and change schools three times more frequently than their civilian classmates. This mobility translates in to 6 to 9 different schools from K-12. Military connected students are more likely to experience adverse academic, social, and emotional impacts. Participants will receive information regarding Military Student legislation that addresses the educational transition issues of military families. Forsyth A Conduit for Change: Improving Family Engagement in Your School Presenter: Nathan Schult Systemic school-wide family engagement cannot be a one person job - but one person can make a difference!. Regardless of culture, ethnicity, age, socioeconomic status, or background – all students benefit academically when their families are actively engaged in their education. Driving successful family engagement practices that improve student achievement in Title I schools requires collaborative and intentional planning to reach all families. Adults who work with young people must have the ability to connect with young people. This engaging and interactive workshop will teach adults to mentor youth to reach their full potential and become strong leaders. This workshop is only for people who like to laugh, interact, talk and never sit down! Participants leave ready to put into action the mentoring skills learned and practiced during this workshop. 2014 SSWAG SPRING CONFERENCE PRESENTERS DR. EDDIE MORRIS is president of Men of Destiny (MOD), a non-profit organization that enhances the educational experiences of
at-risk children. MOD currently has more than 1,000 members in schools in two Atlanta-area school systems. The POH/MOD program has been featured in the, Huffington Post, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Wall Street Journal, on CNN, MSNBC.com, People TV Atlanta, Fox 5 and the Bravo Network, accompanied by rap artist Chris Bridges (Ludacris). Dr. Morris has presented the MOD concept at St. Louis Public Schools, University City (Missouri) Public Schools, Baltimore Public Schools and Savannah State University. He has also created a model Women of Destiny program (WOD) at Bear Creek Middle School, where he is a social worker. Dr. Morris has served as a social worker in the Fulton County, Georgia public schools since 2004. From 1999-2004, he held the same position in Atlanta Public Schools. His work has been recognized by the State of Georgia for having improved graduation rates for consecutive years at Banneker High School in Fulton County. Dr. Morris holds a Ph.D. in social work planning, administration and social science with a minor in educational leadership from Clark Atlanta University School of Social Work, where he also received a master’s degree in clinical social work. He did his undergraduate studies at the University of Central Missouri, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology.
KEVIN SALWEN is the author of The Power of Half: One Family’s Decision to Stop Taking and Start Giving Back and co-founder
of The Power of Half/Men of Destiny Schools Initiative. Kevin was a reporter, columnist and editor at the Wall Street Journal from 1981 to 2000. At the nation’s largest newspaper, Kevin helped cover two presidential administrations, wrote two columns and launched two publications. Since leaving the paper in 2000, Kevin built several media companies and worked with such organizations as the U.S. Olympic Committee. In 2006, at the urging of his then 14-year-old daughter Hannah, Kevin and his family embarked on a philanthropic project to sell their house, move into one half the size and use the funds to help villagers in Africa build a better future for themselves and their children. Kevin and social worker Ed Morris then used those principles of self-empowerment to create The Power of Half/ Men of Destiny Schools Initiative, which helps American children growing up in poverty recognize that they can change their trajectory and build more powerful lives. That program has operated in four Atlanta-area schools and is being piloted in Georgia’s youth prisons. The story of The Power of Half has been featured in The New York Times, CBS Sunday Morning, ABC World News with Diane Sawyer, The View, People and Oprah magazines and many other media outlets.
HEATHER SCHULTZ has been recognized as one of the top motivational speakers for youth in America. Since 1997, her keynote
presentations, workshops and leadership trainings have inspired people everywhere! Heather’s presentations have been described as a “wild and wonderful roller coaster ride of humor, emotion, and inspiration.” She believes in young people and the important role they play in our world. It is that belief that makes her a highly requested national youth speaker. She has keynoted for many state and national organizations such as FCCLA, SADD, National Honor Society, FBLA, Student Councils, and school assemblies. Heather has worked with HBO, appeared in People Magazine, in numerous radio and television specials, and has co-authored several books for young people. Hotep Education Success Strategist and Congressional award-winning author, Hotep is widely known for his proactive, “tough love” approach to education. He is a 15-year master teacher who has developed a reputation for requesting the most troubled students and transforming them into willing participants in their own education. Hotep is the founder of the MAKE A WAY program, a series of high relevancy curricula which are used in over 1000 schools throughout the U.S. His profound work has earned him nominations for the President’s Citizen’s Award and as a CNN Hero. Hotep is also creator of the revolutionary Outcome Progression Model, which he uses to transform the climate and culture of poverty, excuse making and helplessness into one of hope, empowerment, resiliency, and success!
TIERICA BERRY has been inspiring young women since 1999, as an art activist. Tierica is the author of several empowerment books
including Butterfly Tales, a compilation of poems and stories of transition and resilience for young ladies. In response to invitations from Boys and Girls Club, NAACP, and a host of other organizations, Tierica has traveled across the country sharing her empowering strategies for overcoming challenges, fear, self doubt, lack of motivation, depression and bullying through positive expression. Tierica recently launched Affirmative Expression, an educational program that delivers interactive presentations teaching young ladies how the art of honoring one’s feelings can instantly improve self esteem, confidence, and performance at work and school.
KRISTIN MIZE, a compassionate and committed therapist, Kristin earned her Master’s degree in social work from Boston University. She has experience in inpatient, intensive outpatient, medical and community-based mental health settings. Her passion is HOPE - it is required in all clinical situations (and in life!). Kristin now works in private practice specializing in the treatment of young adults with serious mental illnesses: Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, OCD, and PTSD. She is passionate about her clients and helping them achieve the FULLEST of recovery. Kristin greatly enjoys educating others about serious mental illness as a means of advocating for all young persons struggling with a brain disease in an effort to reduce STIGMA! “Children are like wet cement. 2014 SSWAG SPRING CONFERENCE PRESENTERS ADAM HAIZLIP With over a decade of direct experience as an Urban Youth Educator, Co-founder of The Haizlip Group, LLC., former coordinator of Georgia Southern University’s African American Male Initiative, current professor of First Year Experience, and Doctoral Fellow and candidate in the department of Curriculum Foundations and Reading at Georgia Southern University; Adam has a focused research interests in areas pertaining to the intersections of race, gender and American education systems. Implementing a “Real Talk” approach, Haizlip engages young people, practitioners, educators and administrators on the continuum of ethnic and gender representation to engage in critically reflective exercises. As a presenter Haizlip’s scholar- practitioner identity focuses on fostering a culturally affirming environment to engage in “Courageous Conversations”.
MICHELLE ALLEN Recognized as a noteworthy post-secondary education Guest lecturer and speaker on issues around diversity,
multiculturalism, intersections of identity, and social service; Allen, employs a scholarly approach to confront issues of acceptance, pluralism, inter-culturalism, and inclusion on all educational levels. With recent Presentations at the 2014 National Youth At Risk conference, 2014 Cross Cultural Conference on Counseling and Education, and the Courageous Conversation series through the Multicultural Student Center at Georgia Southern University; Ms. Allen provides practical insight on how to maintain your authentic self while “Navigating the Wilderness” of academe and your profession. In the same vein Allen illuminates approaches to enhance the experiences of underrepresented practitioners, educators and students in today’s contemporary education arenas.
ANDREA GLOVER With over 5 years of experience working with youth in Macon GA., and the Bulloch county community,
Andrea has gained relevant practical experience learning and understanding the needs of the youth and practitioners in their working environments. Authentic interactions and relationships have been the catalyst for creating an environment of impact and change. Andrea’s research interest, focused on at-risk youth, encourages her to advocate systemically by evoking courageous conversations and interpersonal growth. As a Counselor in education, she has been privy to the systemic and internal workings of student achievement and how it affects their communities and success. As an educator within the school system, Andrea is aware of the increasing need for culturally responsive training, and culturally relevant strategies to enhance the awareness, knowledge, and skills of practitioners, teachers, and administrators.
THE JASON FOUNDATION, INC. is dedicated to the prevention of the “Silent Epidemic” of youth suicide through free educational
and awareness programs that equip young people, educators/youth workers and parents with the tools and resources to help identify and assist at-risk youth.
KATIE HARDIN is the Business Development Representative for Greenleaf Center. She has a B.S. in Gerontology from Bowling
Green State University, and lives in rural Brooks County, Georgia, with her husband. They have 2 young adult children. Her years of professional experience include an array of community outreach and marketing positions in healthcare agencies, pharmaceuticals, and hospitals. Her interest in community and provider collaboration lends itself to the mission of the Jason Foundation and its goals of advocacy for at-risk youth.
STEPHEN REGISTER is the Director of Business Development at Greenleaf Center, a behavioral health hospital in Valdosta,
Georgia. He has a B.F.A. in Communications from Valdosta State University. He resides in Valdosta with his wife and their 2 young sons. His strong professional background in healthcare marketing includes nearly 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry. Stephen’s experience has given him a solid foundation in community relations, which complements the corporate commitment Greenleaf Center and its parent company, Acadia Healthcare, have made to the Jason Foundation.
ERICA GLENN is a Grants Program Consultant for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth at the Georgia Department of

NATHAN SCHULT As a Parent Engagement Specialist with the Georgia Department of Education, Nathan Schult educates schools and districts on building effective partnerships with families and communities to support high student academic achievement. Prior to joining the GaDOE, Nathan served as a high school counselor in Georgia and enjoyed working with students and their families to assist students achieve their full potential

2014 SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER OF THE YEAR NOMINEES During the summer of 1984, SSWAG constructed the School Social Worker of the Year Award which is given annually to a fellow School Social Worker who is an active member of the organization at the District and State level. This individual’s service has been judged as exemplary. Each district has the opportunity to enter a candidate for this award. The award is presented at the Spring SSWAG Conference.
