MEET the
DIRECTORS
S
t e p h e n Lawrence, Atlanta Public Schools High School Teacher of the Year and Excellence in Teaching Award winner born in Atlanta, Georgia, began his musical career at the age of twelve, studying violin, cello and later piano. During his school career, Stephen served as a concertmaster for several orchestras including the Loyola University Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra of Atlanta, Atlanta Public Schools Youth Symphony Orchestra, MYSO String Quartet, William Grant Still Memorial Orchestra, and many more. Stephen was also a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Talent Development Program. At the age of eighteen, he graduated high school receiving the highest honors at North Atlanta School of the Performing Arts. Stephen Lawrence earned his bachelor’s degree at Loyola University New Orleans in Music Education specializing in String Education, under the guidance of Dean Angeles and Virginia Olander. He started his
teaching career at Joseph C. Wilson Foundation Academy in Rochester, NY where he taught for 2 years, 2 years at Lovejoy High School and is currently in his seventh year at North Atlanta High School where he has been named the 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year. Stephen serves as the Director of Orchestral Activities, music theory instructor and Department Chair of North Atlanta High School’s Fine and Performing Arts Department. Currently, he is a member of the Atlanta Public Schools Arts Resource Team, the Atlanta Public Schools Honors Orchestra Organizer, the outgoing GMEA District V Chair and outgoing American String Teacher’s Association Secretary. Stephen has served as a clinician and coach for orchestra programs in Atlanta Public Schools, Cobb County Public Schools, DeKalb County Public Schools, Fayette County Schools, Gwinnett Public Schools and Henry County Public Schools. Stephen is also the 2nd violinist of the Idalia String Quartet. Presently, he is working towards his Educational Specialist degree in Music Education from the University of Georgia and planning his upcoming wedding.

dam Brooks is the heart and soul of the band program at North Atlanta High School. His passion for music began much in the same way that his students’ did. “I vividly remember the Middle School Band and Orchestra visiting my middle school. I’ve been hooked ever since.” As the 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year, his passion for teaching is as clear as his passion for music, and it translates to a program at NAHS steeped in excellence. A French horn player by trade, Brooks has studied with multiple esteemed professors including Donovan Wells, James Poitier, and Dr. William Rogan. Brooks has also worked with some of the top names in Music Education including Robert W. Smith, Frank T. Williams, and Dr. Ronald Carter. While in college, Brooks served as the section leader for four years and was a student director, serving a pivotal role in the Band Program at Cookman. Since graduating with his B.A. in Music Education from Bethune-Cookman University, his reputation as top educator has been firmly established giving him opportunities to be in demand as a clinician and conductor in brass and percussion across the country. Brooks is also an accomplished percussionist, teaching and performing with several Top 10 Division 1 and 2 Drum and Bugle Corps including Tarheel Sun from Cary, North Carolina (1997-98), the Glassmen from Toledo, Ohio (2001, 2004-2006), and the Colts from Dubuque, Iowa (2009). He has worked with some of the biggest names in percussion industry: Collin McNutt, Steve Roberts, Andrew Markworth, Matt Savage, and Max
Mullinix to name a few. In 2009, he conducted the orchestra for Grammynominated rap artist Rick Ross and Grammy-nominated producers the Justice League on the Teflon Don album. Mr. Brooks has just completed his Master’s degree in Conducting from Reinhardt University and will be acquiring the DMA in conducting in the near future. Under Brooks’ leadership, the Band Department consists of 200+ students and has a full range of classes and ensembles that suit all needs and levels of musicians including Beginning, Concert, and Symphonic Bands, Percussion Methods, Full Orchestra, and the Award winning Jazz Band. The program also includes the Award Winning Marching Warriors, Music Technology, and a host of several small ensembles (chamber ensembles) that supplement learning as well. All groups receive consistent Superior and Excellent Ratings at the Georgia Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluations yearly; have won countless awards in all areas; and currently have produced over 11 million dollars in scholarship money for students during his tenure. With partnerships and training with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Essentially Ellington Jazz Program, the program continues to grow in quantity and quality. “It is [Brooks’] that music is the universal language and the lessons learned in our program will propel our students into environments where they can flourish in any situation.” Mr. Brooks has a beautiful family, wife and band director LaToya Brooks, daughters Aria, Skylar, and Kai Brooks. He is thankful for his blessings and grateful for the opportunity to live out his dreams.
