I write today on behalf of all of us at McCormick Theological Seminary to congratulate you on your installation as the ninth pastor of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. It is a great honor and a humbling responsibility to serve God’s church, and we trust your time at McCormick has equipped you for the task ahead. The focus of your doctoral work on “The Role of Prophetic Preaching in Deepening Spiritual Life through Biblical Interpretation” will be a blessing to the people of Mount Moriah as you lead them with love, joy, and wisdom in the coming years.
McCormick is committed to fostering a community of Christian leaders who serve diverse ministries and congregations in a challenging and complex world. We pray that your service with the people of Mount Moriah will bless East Macon and further the work of God’s kingdom far beyond. MARY HARRIS GURLEY
M
any have heard the voice of Mary Harris Gurley. She has been a soloist in the choirs of Ebenezer since joining the Youth Choir. A soloist at the funerals of the King Family Members held at Ebenezer, her keepsakes include numerous photographs, newspaper clippings, letters of appreciation, and solo concert programs. Mrs. Gurley joined Ebenezer in 1940, and has been actively engaged in church and community activities. In April of 1968, Mrs. Gurley found herself singing at the funeral of her childhood friend, Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.
Musically, her first solo was at age three, in a Sunday School Program at Big Bethel AME Church. She has sung in churches around the Southeast. The Harris Gospel Singers, organized with her brother Eugene, was the first local group to broadcast every Sunday on Atlanta’s first Black owned radio station WERD. Mrs. Gurley performed in Atlanta’s Theater of the Stars production of Finian’s Rainbow with Julius Larosa, Soupy Sales, and Leslie Gore. During the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign, she sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. She joined the Atlanta University Community Chorus, organized and directed by Doctor Wendell Whalum, in 1972. Mrs. Gurley received many offers to record, however, it was not until May 2004, that she agreed to record a CD, Favorite Hymns of Ebenezer, sponsored by the June Birthmonth Club. All proceeds of the CD continue to benefit the church. She continued to expand her musical talents by joining Ebenezer’s first adult hand bell choir. She can be found on YouTube singing. Today, Mrs. Gurley continues to uplift the Lord in song in the Church Choir. She is very active in the life of the church. She was a teacher of the Young Adult Sunday School Class, now the L. L. Laster Class; organized the Women’s Missionary Union Circle Six, now the Hines-Rogers Circle; and was chairperson of the Mission Sunday Class for six years. According to Mrs. Gurley, her biggest regret is “that I did not finish Spelman as my sainted mother wanted.” Her greatest blessing is “being a cancer survivor and wife; my son, Elbert and his wife Jennifer -- my rocks; my grandson, Elbert III and his wife, Iman who presented me with my brilliant great granddaughter, Gabrielle Willow - the first girl in our family in sixty-five years, and my church family, the Ebenezer Baptist Church, for their love and support.” “I’m still discovering, right up to this moment, that it is only by living completely in this world that one learns to have faith. D
octor Jeffrey Wilson is a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee and a graduate of Brainerd High School. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Memphis; a Master’s degree in Apologetics from the Luther Rice Seminary; and a Doctorate of Ministry in Preaching and Leadership from United Theological Seminary. Additionally, he has completed graduate coursework in education from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
In May of 2012, Pastor Wilson was selected, along with 150 church leaders from across the United States and several other countries, to participate in the Summer Institute program on Reconciliation sponsored by Duke University Divinity School. Doctor Wilson is currently a member of the second Cohort of the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel of Pastoral Leadership at Morehouse College. He is currently the Pastor of New United Missionary Baptist Church where he has served since 2009. A community activist, Doctor Wilson served from 2005 to 2014 as a member of the Hamilton County Board of Education representing District #5 where he served on the board twice as Vice Chairman and as Chairman of Transportation and Ethics committees. He currently serves on the boards of Memorial Hospital, The United Way of Chattanooga, Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, Bessie Smith Cultural Center, Chattanooga 2.0 Committee, Unifi-Ed Board, and Blue Cross Blue Shield Ministers Task Force. He is a former Vice Chairman of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, Former Vice President of 100 Black Men of America, Chattanooga Chapter and Chaplain of his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha. His memberships include the Servant Christian Leadership Fellowship, Clergy Koinonia of Chattanooga, the Cameron Harbor Neighborhood Association, the Chattanooga Inner-Faith Council, the National Association of Black Educators, and the 100 Black Men of America. He is a life member of the NAACP and a life member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Doctor Jeffrey T. Wilson is married to Yolanda Spraggins-Wilson, MD and they are the proud parents of one child, Sir Thomas Jeremiah Wilson.

Good Shepherd of the sheep, you have appointed some to be pastors and teachers, under-shepherds of our souls. For this your blessings, we give Thee thanks. We glory in the tradition of the apostles and prophets of old. Apostles are commissioned as delegates of the Lord Jesus Christ to bring the Word of God to the unbelieving and to proclaim the good news of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lord, we acknowledge Your Word. Your Word can save sinners, reclaim backsliders, and encourage believers. Lord, we are thankful for Your Word. Prophets give inspired instruction in moral and religious truth. God reveals a message to the prophets for the people. Prophets edify, comfort, and counsel God’s people. It is only by Your Spirit that we are led in the way of truth. Increase our knowledge, Lord, and renew our commitment to share the joy of your salvation. The work You have ordained for the pastor is great and at times beyond our understanding, but You have told us in Your Word to honor those who work hard for You, giving spiritual guidance to Your people. In Your infinite wisdom You have given us a Shepherd to lead and guide us. Lord, we are grateful for Your goodness, faithfulness, and devotion to us. Lord we know the prayers of the righteous possess power and You heard our beseeching prayers. everend Doctor Walter L. Glover, Jr. is the only son of Mrs. Evelyn Paul Glover and the late Deacon Walter L. Glover, Sr. Doctor Glover received his elementary and secondary education in the public schools of Bibb County, Georgia. He attended Fort Valley State College (Fort Valley, Georgia); the American Baptist Theological Seminary (Nashville, Tennessee); Mercer University School of Religion (Macon, Georgia); the Universal Bible Institute (Alamo, Tennessee) and the Faith College (Birmingham, Alabama).
He holds the Bachelor of Theology, Master of Divinity, Doctor of Religious Education, Doctor of Divinity and Honorary Doctor of Laws Degrees. He has received several awards and citations from schools, colleges, civic and social organizations. He has also received proclamations from the city of Macon for outstanding contributions to the church and community. He was selected as one of the outstanding Young Men of America for 1983. He has also served as Minister of the Day in the Georgia State Senate and the Bibb County Commissioners. He is married to Doctor Beverly A. Williams Glover, and they are the parents of Walter Van Joseph Glover and daughter-in-law, Lashica Glover, and the grandparents of Damyon Maurice and Simone Artelia. Doctor Glover has been preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ for more than forty years. For more than forty years, he has also been the pastoral leader of the Greater Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Incorporated in Macon, Georgia. He has served as Moderator of the Union Baptist Missionary and Educational Association of Middle Georgia, Inc. for more than forty years.
