Thirty-five years ago, we started to develop models for leadership practice and education. The classroom became a laboratory for faculty and students working together to develop new ways to approach the challenges of leadership that we face in our world. Today we are a community of many thousands of people practicing leadership, or educating, training, and advising others in the exercise of leadership. Many of us draw upon the adaptive leadership framework as a foundational set of ideas even as we draw widely from other ideas and develop new insights from our own professional and personal lives. Right now, in our era of turbulence and danger at regional, national and global levels, many of us are faced with a dilemma: do we strengthen the sources of trust that hold people together, working to shore up the bulwark of our social institutions? Or should we disrupt the status quo in an effort to make space for new thinking, new arrangements, and fresh ideas? The goal of the conference is to help us wrestle with this dilemma without letting it paralyze us. As longstanding communities fragment and decay, how do we build bridges that might lead us to new ways of living together? In a polarized environment of competing narratives, how might we write a new, more compelling story for our future? What songs play beneath the conflicting words competing for our ear, and how can we train ourselves to listen better and respond faster in ways that are both challenging and integrative? The conference planning team deserves many thanks for their ongoing efforts to make this conference a substantive, high-impact gathering. They’ve brought together wonderful and extraordinary practitioners, teachers, researchers, and thought-leaders. This conference is a time for us to gather as a community, learn from one another, and frame our next sets of plans to engage with the challenges that stand before us. This weekend is sure to be both challenging and enriching, and we are grateful to have you here with us. Each of you has helped push the whole field forward, and the Adaptive Leadership Network simply would not exist without the commitment and thoughtpartnership of leaders like you. The theme of this year’s conference is “To Hold or To Disrupt: Leading in Unsettling Times.” Our aim is to take stock of the world’s most pressing issues, reconnect with our individual and collective sense of purpose, and prepare to engage on what matters most. The conference program is built upon the core tenets of the Adaptive Leadership philosophy and seeks to harness the community’s collective wisdom to evolve our tools and practices so we can better listen, mobilize and engage in today’s environment. The goals for our journey together this weekend are multi-fold: • REORIENT our perspective through our individual and collective stories; • RECONNECT our purpose, our commitment to adaptive leadership, and what’s at stake; • RETOOL our capabilities and arm ourselves with new tools and resources to do the work in the areas we are most needed; • REFLECT on our past, re-establish our sanctuaries, and consider our future leadership; • CHALLENGE our assumptions and gain insights from questioning each other; and • MOBILIZE ourselves and each other to do the work. Together, we’ll step up to the balcony so we can see the bigger picture for our communities, our institutions, and ourselves. Together, we’ll gather as a community, learn from one another, and frame our plans to engage with the challenges that stand before us. TERMINOLOGY
ROUNDTABLES Small group discussions organized around: (1) a common thematic or substantive issue, or (2) a common professional/functional role in adaptive leadership. These sessions are intended to explore the adaptive challenges in a given area, take stock of existing efforts, and/or discuss and brainstorm possible interventions and solutions strategies. PEER PANELS These sessions will bring together: (1) experienced adaptive leadership practitioners to share their perspectives and insights around developing solutions to adaptive challenges in specific areas, or (2) experts to share their perspective and insights from their experiences of teaching, consulting, or researching adaptive leadership. CASE CONSULTATIONS These sessions will enable a group examination of past or ongoing adaptive leadership cases. There are two types of case consultations: (1) small groups for individual cases of leadership failure or success and (2) large group case consultations of a potential failure or aftermath of failure at the national level.

FARAYI CHIPUNGU teaches Exercising Leadership: The Politics of Change at the Harvard Kennedy School. Before joining the Kennedy School faculty, she worked as a strategy consultant with McKinsey & Company.
TAMAR CHUGOSHVILI is the First Deputy Chairperson of the Parliament of Georgia, head of the Gender Equality Council of the Parliament, and Chair of the US Caucus at Parliament of Georgia.
JOSEPH CURTATONE is in his sixth term as mayor of Somerville, Massachusetts. His key initiatives include the Shape Up Somerville initiative, comprehensive reform of the Somerville Police Department, and a citywide commitment to data-driven performance
ALI IMAD FADLALLAH is an artist and social entrepreneur. Ali runs Rima Records, a social enterprise based in Los Angeles, CA that provides artist management and change management services across Film, Arts, Music, and Education (FAME).
DAVID GERGEN is a senior political analyst for CNN and has served as an adviser to four U.S. presidents. He is a professor of public service and codirector of the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School.
JENNIFER GRANHOLM is a two-term governor of Michigan (20032011) and is credited with leading Michigan though a period of unprecedented economic challenge and change.
RON HEIFETZ is the King Hussein bin Talal Senior Lecturer in Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School, and the Founding Director of its Center for Public Leadership.
MITZI JOHNSON is the Speaker of the House, Vermont Legislature. She is the 91st Speaker and third female Speaker of the House.
KIMBERLYN LEARY is a professor of psychology at the Harvard Medical School and directs the Enabling Change program at the School of Public Health. In 2015, she served as Advisor to the White House Council on Women.
DAVID LEWIS is an award winning filmmaker, journalist & storyteller. He has been a CNN correspondent, a newsmagazine producer, a commercial director and an independent film director.
FRANK MICCICHE is NCQA’s Vice President of Public Policy and Communications. In this position, he directs NCQA’s relations with Congress, federal agencies and the states, as well as NCQA’s work with the media and other external audiences.
DAN MULHERN teaches leadership, organizational behavior and public policy at the Schools of Business and Law at the University of California. He is the author of Everyday Leadership: Getting Results in Business Politics and Life.

TIM O’BRIEN teaches Exercising Leadership: The Politics of Change at the Harvard Kennedy School. He is a faculty member at HGSE’s Instructional Rounds Institute and a leadership consultant for INSEAD.
NUALA O’CONNOR is the President & CEO at the Center for Democracy & Technology. Previously, from 2003-2005, she served as First Chief Privacy Officer for the US Department of Homeland Security.
HUGH O’DOHERTY has taught leadership and conflict resolution at the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, the University of Maryland, and the John F Kennedy School of Government.
RICHARD PASCALE is an Associate Fellow within the Division of Executive Education, Said Business School, Oxford University, and author of numerous articles and four books including best-selling The Art of Japanese Management and most recently, The Power of Positive Deviance.
TOM PEREZ has served as the Chair of the Democratic National Committee since February 2017. He was the Secretary of Labor from 2013 to 2017.
KIRSTI SAMUELS works with leadership teams, ranging from Prime Ministers and CEOs, to armed rebel groups to solve complex challenges. She has worked in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and Sudan and throughout America.
MAURIZIO TRAVAGLINI practices as a consultant within the blurred boundaries of innovation, change, learning and collaboration. In that same ‘space’ he also runs leadership development programs for academic institutions.
DEAN WILLIAMS is the author of Leadership for a Fractured World and Real Leadership and teaches at Harvard Kennedy School. He has led major change processes and leadership development initiatives for companies and governments around the world.

ince its founding in 2000 with a generous gift from Leslie and Abigail Wexner, the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard Kennedy School has worked to prepare its students to exercise leadership in a world responding to a rapidly expanding array of economic, political, and social challenges. Hugh O’Doherty Executive Director -Leadership and Peacemaking Global Network Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy - Harvard Kennedy School In 2014, a large study of U.S. political attitudes by the Pew Research Center showed that Republicans and Democrats are more divided along ideological lines with deeper, more extensive partisan antipathy in recent years than any point in time in the last two decades. In both the United States and many other countries, we see voters dividing into opposing camps, viewing the other side as a threatening enemy to be vanquished. Compromise is no longer possible and fears arise. During this workshop, we will consider what contribution adaptive leadership can make in a world that is becoming increasingly polarized. In several Western countries, economic inequality, global migration, and technological change have left many citizens struggling and frustrated, giving rise to an antiestablishment, nationalist backlash. In some developing countries, the promise of democracy has been challenged by slowing growth rates, persistent corruption, and the inefficiencies of participatory governance. Polling data indicates that “strong man” authoritarians seem increasingly attractive in many countries. Framing the challenge, surfacing undiscussables, calling out “work avoidance”, and sustaining productive levels of disequilibrium invite marginalization and even assassination. Automation in manufacturing, for example, can increase productivity with decreased energy consumption, but is also displacing thousands of workers. There is an opportunity for adaptive leadership practitioners to be early movers in this space – from leading efforts to reconcile different perspectives on technology and helping individuals and societies develop adaptive capacity to absorb the impacts of these changes – to shaping the trajectory of technological advancement. This session will explore some of these key technologies and their implications, and begin a dialogue regarding how the ALN community is engaging on these issues. It will also examine the how the “innovation culture” is disrupting existing norms, and highlight strategies entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and startup leaders are employing to manage disruptive change. Regardless of the policy solutions implemented today, dramatic change lies ahead as societies transition away from fossil fuel reliance and tackle decisions about how to respond to impacts such as rising sea levels that threaten communities. In the long run, progress will require new approaches that stretch the political imagination and reach beyond existing policy frameworks. This session will explore diagnostic mistakes in climate policy making, discuss strategies for engaging the public in the debate, and assess what learning still needs to be accomplished in order to make progress.
