WINTERTON ST. RESIDENCE

A modest addition and two-car garage set into the hillside creates a series of indoor and outdoor rooms, each with a distinct character and connection to the small site. Using simple extruded forms, the project reconfigures the center of gravity of the original house, improving interior flow. Dramatic views and natural light are prioritized, as is a simple material palette that compliments the existing brick house and neighborhood context. Winner of Design Pittsburgh 2020 Certificate of Merit

TECTONIC | STEREOTOMIC The Winterton Street Residence explores the relationship of tectonic and stereotomic expression. To define protected outdoor spaces and connect zones for living in the hilly site, two masonry volumes are embedded into the earth. These stereotomic masses are in immediate dialogue with the existing masonry structure. Counterbalancing the heaviness of the masonry, an extruded gable volume (the tectonic frame) perches like a treehouse and gestures to the hillside views and morning sun.

ORTHOPHOSPHATE PAVILION

PWSA’s Orthophosphate Pavilions distribute lead-preventative chemicals into 2/3 of the city water supply. Sited adjacent to Reservoir #1 and the Membrane Filtration Plant, they occupy greenspaces in a vibrant public park. The pavilions are small pieces of city infrastructure that must feel welcoming to pedestrians and visitors to Highland Park.

ORTHOPHOSPHATE BUILDING CONCEPT

PAVILION CONVERSION CONCEPT

SECOND-LIFE ADAPTABILITY Because the chemical distribution purpose of the Orthophosphate Pavilions will be obsolete in 10-15 years, the structures were designed to convert into full park shelters, reclaiming the entire footprint of the building when the walls of the chemical room are removed. In its second life, the panelized ceiling can be removed to reveal the full extent of the timber roof structure and cedar tongue and groove deck. Stack bond brick indicates where walls are non-structural and can be removed.

AIR QUALITY STATIONS

The Breathe Easy Air Quality Station is a prototype for an interactive, placemaking device that delivers real-time air quality information. Born out of an Ecodistricts planning effort in Millvale, the AQ Stations act as a bench, a beacon, and an interface to an online air quality dashboard, which was developed as a companion project to the stations.

BREATHE EASY: MILLVALE AIR QUALITY PLANNING The Breathe Easy planning effort was developed to bring awareness to a persistent, but invisible, problem in the region: poor air quality. The goal is to empower residents through engagment and education within the community. Four placemaking projects were proposed along the central spine of Millvale’s business district, each serving to inform the community about current and persistent trends in air quality. Three of the four projects have been developed or are in a form of development. The AQ Station and AQ Dashboard are directly inspired by the Breathe Easy proposals. [EDUCATE + ACTIVATE]

CONCEPT + PROCESS Generation of the Air Quality Station concept began with a question of how a project can create meaningful engagement if given only 5 seconds of attention, or 1 minute, or 5 minutes. The answer to this question then had to be balanced against a placemaking proposal—a “bus stop”—that potentially would be made by unskilled community members. The solution was a modest bench with a prismatic view window that would glow with a color associated with the current air quality index of the location.

23

FABRICATION + ASSEMBLY Evolving from a community-built installation to a digitally fabricated prototype, the AQ Stations are a mix of craft and technology. Welded steel plate supports and grounds the stations, while a powder-coat aluminum protected MDO box protects the air quality monitor energy source and LED display. Each station has a unique powder-coat accent color and vinyl decals inform the public of the stations purpose and connect smartphone users to air quality resources and data on the custom online AQ Dashboard.

ALTAIR RESIDENCES

Located in the city of Colombo, Altair is Sri Lanka’s tallest residential building. It sits on a waterfront pedestrian promenade, facing Beira Lake and the Indian Ocean. The parti is a rational stacking of 1-2 units on either side of a vertical core, connected by bridges. This allows natural cross ventilation in all units. The leaning tower allows for stepped balconies facing the lake, playing to Moshe Safdie’s manifesto: “for everyone a garden”.

PODIUM COORDINATION Altair is a mixed-use residential project. The two towers are its defining feature but its podium base provides the ground-level interface with the public. I was responsible for the design development coordination of programmatic spaces of the podium (lobby, retail, extensive parking, loading docks, and mechanical areas). Characteristic of many of Safdie’s designs, negotiating program and circulation with atypical geometries become mini design challenges in themselves.

SERENA DEL MAR

Serena del Mar, or the “Dreamed City”, is a 350-acre masterplan in Cartagena, Colombia. Housing, offices, retail, and a new medical center are clustered around a new manmade waterway called “El Gran Canal”. The effort consisted of careful development of the masterplan, schematic planning and massing of five housing types, a large-scale model and hand watercolored renderings.

HOUSING TYPOLOGY June 2011

While the Los Morros development contains a regional hospital, hotel, retail center and office park, it is primarily a residential neighborhood. Five housing types (canal, deck, boulevard, mixed-use, and tower) were developed to provide roughly 400,000 sq.m. of residential square footage. The typology study set masterplan design guidelines for scale, massing, access and parking, and created a vision for a vibrant neighborhood.

DESIGN + REPRESENTATION

Clear communication of the architectural idea relies on compelling and descriptive imagery. Many projects in early stages of design require that special attention is paid to the development of a narrative over the depiction of finished architecture. Each of the following images was developed to describe and “sell” an architectural or urban design concept.

GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE CITYWIDE EVALUATION As part of a team tasked with identifying green infrastructure opportunities through a city-wide evaluation of combined sewer overflow priority sheds, we produced a series of aerial renderings. These renderings feature conceptual designs for six priority sewersheds and identify where green infrastructure would provide significant benefits. They are meant to be diagrammatic in nature, highlighting connectivity, green space opportunity and development sites. Christopher Guignon

5TH + DINWIDDIE PLAZA This perspective rendering was produced to sell the concept design and conceptual massing of a mixed-use development in Pittsburgh’s Uptown neighborhood. Because many aspects of the building design were as yet unresolved, the visualization focuses on the protected nature of the plaza, the connectivity across Dinwiddie and Fifth Ave. and the potential for vibrant activity in the plaza. The team was awarded the project.

GROW PITTSBURGH - GARDEN DREAMS GREENHOUSES In 2019, Grow Pittsburgh was gifted the Garden Dreams urban farm in Wilkinsburg. We completed a planning and visioning study to demolish a large dilapidated Victorian and reconfigure the site around three large greenhouses. This aerial rendering shows the campus concept of the layout, positioning the public open space in the protected interior of site. Work is ongoing on the interior renovation of a Garden Dreams office in an adjacent house.

CENTRE AVENUE REDEVELOPMENT PLAN This project reimagines the Hill District Centre Avenue Corridor as a meeting place for residents, a welcoming place for visitors, a sharing place for institutions, and a place of exchange for businesses. The rendering emphasizes proposed green infrastructure while suggesting yet-to-be-designed architectural interventions. Views are specially chosen to be identifiable by residents as the project had a robust community engagement scope. Winner of Design Pittsburgh 2015 Certificate of Merit Christopher Guignon
