Drawn by Beatrice Individual Exercise Left Handed Drawing was an interesting exercise that made me very focused during the whole process. It took twice as long as it would take to draw it with your dominant hand and the results are swigglely and wavey. It definetly felt different to draw it with your less dominant hand as it made it so that your full concentration is on a single view. Group Exercise My groupmates for this exercise were Yasmin, Alex and Beatrice. While picking the best scene from each person we’ve decided to create a storyboard which depicts the sense of discovery after isolation. Beatrice’s hand drawing was the best out of all of us and she was in charge of drawing the storyboard (Figure 3). Reflection on Exercise (31-07-2021) I made a mistake in creating storyboards for each experience and ran out of time to finish the exercise. I should have clarified it and create 1 scene per experience and would have had more to contribute to the team. Group communication were good as everyone contributed and gave their opinion on everybody’s piece. It felt as it was a pin-up in an actual class setting. We all compiled our ideas. I thought about these ideas through looking at a single common theme in all of our drawings. And the idea of water and light came to play in the end of the storyboard.

Conclusion I find buildings with simple forms very pleasing as it is minimal and simple. Furthermore, the non distracting nature on the form helps to fit in to many contexts especially with the chosen materiality being part of the history of the site or what is famous in the country.

However, even though simple forms are clean and minimal, it can get too minimal sometimes and not provide depth to the design. I feel by playing with levels of the buildings will help with this problem.

Week 7 • Interim group project, in pairs. • Combined our dishes and produce a final dish for the major assignment. • Based the site as a space where we could bring aspects of the dish into it. • Water in both our dishes were present. • Played around with water flowing. • Most of the work drawn and created for mid sem was not used for the final as we changed the design and programing.
Week 2 Drawing Style Study • Decided to hand draw the next assignment to visualise the illustrative process of the studio. • This did not helped with final outcome as everything else was still done digitally following a given precedent style.

Week 1 Making your own dish • Collage of a dish that will be informing the final design of your project. • I realised that I should have made this a digital drawing rather than a collage as it helps with future representation. • The culture aspect of the dish helped with the final design outcome.
Week 9, 10 & 11 Form Finding and completing 1 of each drawing. • Form finding was very late affected the time management for the final outcome. • Submission Sketches was done to create roofs that help with rainwater collection. • Though hand sketches can be done quick and easily, digital transtion still takes a while to figure out. • I was more comfortable in digital modeling. • Iterations were done to create the final product.

Studio 32: Basin (Summer Studio D) Week 2 Exploring the Sublime • Preliminary assignments, this helped with informing the final design outcome. The idea was translated to the form of the final project. • Very rough and not well drawn iterations were done. Could have spent more time and effort in creating these drawings.
Week 4 Reviewing Interim • Interim presentation. Could have created better section drawings and majority of the time spent was developing the plan drawings. • Line drawing captured the overall drawing style of the project.

Week 7 Week 1 Site Analysis • Site context and analysis was done. • This helped the final design outcome as it created a base on which the final project will be based on. • Culture and the natural environment was very important for the final project. • Analysis could have been done more accurately.
Week 3 Moments & Form Finding • Connection detail was very good in creating moments of time. • The plan sketches helped with organising program and space distribution.
Final Review • Very satisfied with the line dominant drawings, plans and sections. • Could have done better in producing the renders. • Have not used render engines in awhile so, everything was done in photoshop. The result was not as I wanted it to be.

What mistakes that I do not want to repeat. • Do not get hung up on a single design • Drawing style may be uncomfortable but do not give up on it • Detail modelling site context should be a MUST

What to expect Previous Studios From previous studios the main issues discovered were mainly towards the design stages of the project. While not having many iterations during the process, the overall result were not satisfied. Furthermore, layouting for the final panel is always held back and very last minute. Therefore, final panel layout is not usually appealing and not aesthetic. What I’ve gotten from previous studios were the different styles each studios had me produce interms of representation. Studio 44 was heavily focused on following a precedent style while Studio 32 focuses on line drawings. However, in terms of render styles, I’ve have not experiement with collage style renders which is what I may want to explore in this studio. Reflection (31-07-2021) What I want to do better in this studio is to create more iterations during the design process to provide for the final project outcome. This can be accomplished by trying out mix media and even sketch model experimentation with household items due to Covid. Furthermore, I would want to focus more on the overall project, interior and exterior as my past projects have been very exterior focused and the interior was lacking. I can do this by splitting focus and keep reminding myself that interior is as important as the exterior of the building.

Kombucha While Drawing Could not decide between the modalities that I wanted to explore. However, I had a thought of Kombucha since it reminded me of Melbourne since I had my first Kombucha there. Therefore, I’ve decided to do this exercise with Kombucha making. Drawing out the process for each step. From harvesting to your door step. Media Experimentation I used different types of media to showcase each step of the kombucha making process. Depicting differences by using the media and highlighting it. From the use of tea, coffee, wax, highlighters and felt tip pens. Reflection on Exercise (31-07-2021) I made a mistake in creating a process board for the modality rather than having ACTION in the modality itself. For the next exercise, I will aim to choose a modality which requires action rather than something that is as still as kombucha making. However, I’ve really enjoyed the process of experimenting with different media. Being in lockdown in Malaysia, I couldn’t get any art supplies. Thus, using household items that I could find in my childhood home.

Argentinian Salsa (Left) I wanted to convey the seductiveness of salsa dancing. The phasing of salsa is shown through the outfits of the dancers. It can be seen the faster phase the dancers are in, the dress and clothing is more active in its movement. Reflection (07-08-2021) I had a straight idea to depict salsa dancing when I was watching the youtube video. However, I had trouble showing it in the overall composition of the drawing. I felt I could have shown the atmosphere better in the drawing. Especially with the help of watercolour would show the seductiveness through its diffusion when watercolour is applied on paper.
Ballet (Right) Similar to salsa, I wanted to show the flow of ballet. The lightness of each step. Each hand movement felt like the dancers were floating. I was trying to depict those by differentiating the hands and legs in the drawing and use curves to emphasise the floating aspect. Reflection (07-08-2021) I felt that watercolour again could have done the flowness of ballet dancing. Alex did a drawing using watercolour to depict the floating aspect of ballet which was very successful.

Chinese Calligraphy (Left) Chinese Calligraphy has many powerful motions and strokes that shows the confidence of the artist. I used chinese calligraphy ink which I had since grade school and tried to depict the powerful strokes and confidence in the brush. Reflection (07-08-2021) I find this painting very successful as it portray what I wanted clearly. However, this did not depict the movement of the artist but rather the brush strokes.
Wrestling (Right) Wresting was interesting as it is a two person sport. Hence, I was trying to depict the movement of both person in the match. The interlocking of bodies and chokeholds that they are doing has a very heavy and strong movement. Therefore, I wanted to show this rigidness of wresting and the interlocking of bodies. Reflection (07-08-2021) I felt that this drawing depicted wrestling well. However, I felt the drawing may have been too simple compared to others.

Showering (Left) The media I used for this painting is a soap bar. I felt it was fitting to show ‘showering’ with a soap bar as we scrub our bodies everyday. The scrubbing motion was done through a dry brush. Reflection (07-08-2021) I liked how this drawing turned out. The scrubbing motion can be seen clearly with the brush strokes. However, I could have included the water aspect of showering through a background or some other forms of media.

Overall Thoughts Modality Drawing Experimentation I am happy that we did this exercise as it made me decide which modality I want to pursue for this Studio. I decided to choose bathing/showering as my modality. The reason behind this because I have always wanted to do something with design that I have been practicing everyday since the day I was born. We’ve all taken a bath and shower before, however, we’ve never really thought about the different types of process and techniques that could be used in a bath/shower. Reflection (07-08-2021) I feel that this week’s progress in terms of level of work is better and more organised than last week’s exercises. This is because I set a mindset and a time window to finish each task and move on to the other one right after. This allowed me to save time and made me work quickly and smart. The use of mix media in this exercise was very helpful in widening my perspective on each material properties and modalities. I am excited to explore this modality further. However, the feeling is daunting as well because of Hella’s previous studio’s theme being a bathhouse. I would have to do something unique and different to the other bath houses from previous students from the studio.

Te c t o n i c M o d e l s I t e r a t i o n 1 1. I used clay to mold the sucken ground plane to show the properties of holding water and affordance through the surface created. 2. I experimented with paper trying to show a person scrubbing their back when showering. 3. I wanted to show the slits allowing light and wind in when a person is taking a bath. Hot bath with cold wind.
4. The fluidness of the shape was to depict a person floating in water while taking a bath, the relaxing nature of it. 5. Affordance play. How the groundplane could interact with the plane above. 6. I wanted to try something different in terms of modality as this was more trying to explore other possibilities of atmospheres that could be created.

Te c t o n i c M o d e l s I t e r a t i o n 2 Exploring Tectonics The inspiration that I had for creating these tectonic models were to create something fluid that can depict water. Furthermore, I was trying to pick smartly which model making materials would be effective in showing all proper atmosphere. The main tectonics I wanted to explore was MASS, FRAME and PLANE. This is because of bathhouses comprising of both of the 2 more than tectonics such as point and line. When I made these models, I wanted to show the atmosphere of the space. Using curves to depict the characteristics of water flowing and using molded clay as a material for molding the ground plane. Reflection (07-08-2021) This iteration of models helped me understand and picture more of the bath house. I feel like these models does not really show the movement of bathing/showering. Thus, in further iterations, I would want to show more of that. The most successful models are the bottom right and centre right model. I would want to explore more of these 2 further in the upcoming iterations. I feel that the plints could have been made better. I could not find foamcore in my area. I may have to result to wraping paper around some card to get the smooth edges. Furthermore, I will need to photograph the images from the inside of the models rather than an overall view. to convey the atmosphere better.

The need to clear my mind with any clouding thoughts as this process will allow me to feel relax and comfortable rather than being anxious or nervous. 2. Draw your set up and implements and space needed to scale.
5. List the elements of your environment that most influence your practice, what brings most joy? Water is the most defining factor of taking a bath. Without water, the bath will not be filled. Fur thermore, temperature of the overall environment plays a huge part. 6. Describe the feeling at the end of your practice. Draw this or write or both. The overwhelming feeling of warmth and comfort at the end of the practice. Furthermore, it allows for having a clean mindset at the end of it and allows you to think and depict a thought differently than before.

Atmospheres 1. I like how the atmospheres created in this model with the interacting fluid forms have with one another. 2. The tunnel effect created with this model creates a seductiveness of exploring what is beyond this so called tunnel.
3. The light and shadow created with the slits creates an atmosphere of transprency and translucency. 4. What would happen if we were to be in the perspective of going through a towel on the ground. 5. I like how the slits of light shines on the depicted towel in the middle of model.

Te c t o n i c M o d e l s I t e r a t i o n 2 Exploring Tectonics For this iteration, I fully focused on plane. The twisting and folding was manageable through the helps of paper. I felt that paper models were faster to produce and yet it produces possible complex results. Reflection (14-08-2021) The plinths created in this iteration is an improvement from last week. Getting inspiration from Martin’s plinths. Furthermore, I feel my model photography helped captured more of the atmosphere in this iteration compared to the previous iteration. This iteration should have been better than the previous iteration. I felt that I stepped back rather than stepped forward. The reason behind this was because of me trying to explore more of organic and curved forms rather than using rectalinear forms. After the feedback session, I’ve realised that I’ve just created different types of curved forms and placed it on a piece of card. I feel that I should have further explore some of the ideas that I had from Iteration 1. I should have made models that shows the carrying of water in its form. The next iteration I would want to show the qualities of water in my models rather than just creating forms that tries to show water.

Light Exploration Exploring different ways to include light in the building. I wanted to show how different planes and other types of surfaces interact with each other through the help of light. Using foil to depict the properties of reflection of water. This can help with the placement of water in the bath house. For example, in model 2, the water is in between the 2 planes while it shines down towards the ground plane.

Reflection (14-08-2021) From previous models, I wanted to depict the water body better. Therefore, I’ve showed this through the use of foil to convey the quality of reflection that water has.

Light Atmospheres 1. I wanted to create a cave like effect from paper with a surface of water, in this case is the foil. I like how the light reflects back and gives out a small glare towards the user. 2. Having 2 layers of cutouts in the model to allow light to shine through while having plastic film in the centre to create a water effect. 3. Reflective planes could be used to create an atmospheric sensation for the users.
4. I wanted to explore the arch and what effects will take place if a light beam was shined at a certain angle to illuminate part of the arch. 5. From the readings done, I got inspired by Japanese architecture and how they convey the power of light in their buildings. This was an inspiration taken from one of Tadao Ando’s projects.

Light Exploration What was done well? (14-08-2021) Looking at week 2, I was confused and went backwards in terms of progress in the model iterations. Therefore this time, I wanted to show more of qualities of water. Thus, I felt that the depiction of water through the use of foil was very successful to create a reflecting characteristic of a plane. Furthermore, the patterns created by the plastic film and foil has a very dreamy effect towards the model. This iterations of model was better in a sense that I did not spend a huge amount of time as I understood that it is a sketch model and not a final model. What could have been better? (14-08-2021) I feel that photographs could have been captured better. Especially with lining up the planes and the camera frame. Furthermore, more complex models could have been achieved and I would want to explore more lighting options for the project. If I were to redo the models, I would remove the cave like paper structure and went towards a more planar elements in the model. Especially experiment more with mass. I feel that I could implement more planar elements in the other iterations to create a dynamism between elements. Looking back from week 4 (21-08-2021) From the precedent research, it can be seen that the models that I produced for light and shadow was more prominant and similar to the precedent I’ve chosen. If I were to explore the precedents before the model making exercise, I would have produced better and more similar models, in terms of tectonics to explore.

Japanese Onsen In Japanese culture, bathing is treated the same way as we treat food, tea, and transportation. Bathing in Japanese culture is a treated as a leisure, meditative, and sensual daily ritual taken before dinner. What is present Wooden stools, buckets, tub, window towards nature. Sequencing The bath begins with a soapy scrub to rinse away the dirt and dust on the body. This is followed by a long soaking in the tub to open up pores and followed by a rinse and a final longer soak than before.

Finnish Baths and Saunas The combination between two extreme temperatures formed by ice swimming and hot saunas are said to be very healthy for the body. This ritual is done to improve your immune system, resistance to cold, better sleep and helps with better breathing. What is present Very cold water and coals. Sequencing Dip oneself into the freezing cold water for a few minutes or seconds to lower one’s temperature and head back into the sauna to warm oneself up back to temperature.

week 04 Traditional Roman Baths The Romans enjoyed the company of clean warm water in a bath as it conveys the idea of luxury amongst them. They believed that baths were very healthy and helps with resisting the cold during the winter. Sequencing The sequence can be depicted differently to everyone as there are so many components. However, the most common would be following the sequence of rooms mentioned above.

Tr a d i t i o n a l B a t h s What did I think? From the research done, I found Japanese baths and Finnish baths are most interesting to explore further. The reason behind this is because of the culture and sequencing of the baths. The cleansing ritual behind japanese baths can be implemented and thought of for the project. Furthermore, the difference in Finnish baths is the culture of it. Having cold baths before entering a hot space/sauna/dry room is very interesting to me and I would want to explore more of it and implement the culture into the bath house. Reflection (21-08-2021) I feel that the exercise of researching the different types of baths really gave me different perspectives and ideas to choose from. This exercise was very informative and I’ve learnt a lot from it. Furthermore, since bathing culture is very different, it is important to think about whether to marry the different bathing styles or to keep it seperate and respect it seperately. I enjoyed this process of research as it strengthens my thoughts and ideas even more. Especially if I were to find something that I feel is worth exploring and has many opportunities.

Precedent Study: Therme Vals by Peter Zumthor (1996) Location: Graubunden Canton, Switzerland The concept was the create a quarry like structure that accomodates with the natural surroundings and blended itself with the side of the slope. The material used for this project was locally sourced Valser Quarzite slabs. The building was built to convey and rediscover the ancient benefits of bathing. Every element of light and shadow, materiality, enclosed space and linear element was all designed to convey a sensual and restorative experience for the user. Precedent Study: Espai CEL – Thermal Baths by Arquetipus projectes arquitectònics (2019) Location: Caldes De Montbui, Spain The project was to create a new thermal water space in the pre-exisiting building. The architects wanted to explore and discover the space that was created 250 years ago. The water used is all collected from the original resevoir. The contrast of old and new makes it seem that the bath created was purposed to be used for relaxing and enjoying the mineral rich water. Precedent Study: Koganeyu by Schemata Architects (2020) Location: Sumida City, Japan The project is based on renovating an existing traditional Japanese bath called a Sento. The idea was to create a space that still allowed for the community to use and enjoy themselves outside of bathing. By retaining the existing baths, the other unused spaces were transformed to accomodate different functions, such as, a bar and sauna. By retaining the exisiting baths, it retains the existing tradition of the Japanese bathing culture. Precedent Study: Forest Bath by Kyoko Ikuta Architecture Laboratory (2010) Location: Japan Though this may not be a bath house, I really enjoy the architecture and design of this building. The unique form of the building helped with creating different desired atmospheres and spaces for its users. The clients of the house are an old couple who wanted a summer home that they can do nothing in. It allowed them to expose their bodies to the surrounding woods while being at different parts of the house. The different openings of the house allowed for different lighting and atmospheres created.

Precedent Research What I thought From the traditional baths that I explored, I’ve decided to focus more of the bath precedents to be based on Nordic / Japanese precedents. Furthermore, through the help of site analysis, I’ve chose precedents that can help with accomodating the site with its similar features and scale. The similar features that majority of the precedents have is how the plane tectonic interacts with mass. I would want to further explore this in my project. I feel these precedents were well chosen. The combination of different scales and culture helped with further exploration of ideas. Reflection (21-08-2021) Looking back at the models that I have made, I feel that this exercise was a step forward in terms of model ideas and potential form ideas. Site Collage What was done well? I felt I showed the areas I want to explore further well. Especially in terms of the accessibility of the site. What could have been better? (21-08-2021) I feel that the overall graphics of the collage is very poor. I feel that the graphics is not clean in terms of object placements as it looks too visually heavy towards the bottom of the collage. Furthermore, I feel that the colors of the maps and objects could have had a blueish tint to it as it depicts the bath house better. If I were to do this exercise again, I would have implemented more of the demographic side of things in terms of site analysis. Finding out which demographic I am targeting will be important down the line. Furthermore, I would like to add the bath houses that are close by, Carlton baths, Fitzroy baths and City baths. Bubble Diagram What was done well? This exercise allowed me to visualise and get a sense of how much space is needed for my bath house. Especially with the example that Hella provided us of her previous studio, it helped me understand how much space is need for certain parts of the program. What could have been better? (14-08-2021) I feel that at the moment, the depiction on space has mainly been on where a program should be placed rationally to allow for the circulation to make the most sense. However, I was not thinking about the culture and ritual that comes with bathing. Thinking about the questions: What is bathing about? How to woek with the ground plane? Te c t o n i c M o d e l s I t e r a t i o n 3 I wanted to explore the tectonics of plane and mass more in this iteration of the models. Furthermore, through the help of precedents and site analysis, I wanted to include the arch element in my design. Therefore, I’ve made a model to depict the arch element that could be added into the final iterations of forms for the building.
The plane element is explored through the difference in height and angles each plane is placed at. The different angles allows for spaces to convey certain atmospheres that could be used in a bath house.

Atmospheres 1. The atmosphere created shows dynamism of the space. Being an enclosed space but creating a force that feels greater when the user is inside it. 2. The arch was created to show a non conventional arch. However, I feel this is weakest of all the models created this week. Te c t o n i c M o d e l s What was done well? (22-08-2021) I felt that this iteration of models have been the most successful in terms of showing tectonics and atmospheres. The use of precedent examples really helped me disregard the flow form that I did in the 2nd iteration. After so many iterations of models, I feel that the efficiency of which I work has increased. The models did not took more than 4 hours to be thought of and made. The mentality that I set myself was to produce models that can be very rough but depict the sense of atmospheres that I want. This helped me reduce the time needed to make the models and I would want to carry this forward. What could have been better? (22-08-2021) I feel that the models could have been bigger. This would allow me to take better interior shots of the model that can’t be done with a small model. If I were to do this assignment again, I would try to implement the arch element into the plane elements of the model. I feel that during this iteration, that could have been a good potential to further explore.

Sketch Models The sketch models was used to experiment the planes withing the site itself. Through countless iterations and placements of planes, these are the 3 models created. 1. This iteration was heavily layered with planes. Especially the different levels created by it help emphasise the dynamism which I like in a building. 2. This iteration was more on the play with mass, planes
were still used. However, the interaction between mass and plane was explored more. 3. The third iteration was when both mass and plane was combined and used equally. I looked back to last week’s models and thought I could use a similar material or even lighter material to create these folds and it really worked out at the end. What could have been better? Precedent Study: House H by Felipe Assadi Arquitectos Location: Zapallar, Chile I chose this precedent due to its materiality. The rigidness of concrete would be perfect for emphasising planes in my building. Furthermore, the placement of windows are mostly located at the ground level rather than directly at body level. I would like to create a similar feel with my building by really showing the planes cutting through the floor plates.

Precedent Study: Alone House by Story Architecture Location: Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam The skylight and facade of the building caught my eye. Due to it being directly next to a building, similar to our site, it shows that there are other ways into incorporating light into the building. Majority of the light source coming into the building is from the sky light. I would want to include multi skylight into my building, especially incorporating into the basement.

Modality Collage What was done well? (28-08-2021) I feel like incorporating different cultures was the right thing to do. I feel that was successfully shown in my collage. Atmospheres First Iterations of plans. I’ve decided to have 3 levels in my building as the basement level is essential in a bath house. This would help create the atmosphere that I want to explore.
I made the plan to show the importance of transition. From changing to showering to bathing. All these rituals and sequence are very important in the bath house.
When making the plans, I thought about many ideas and placements for the program. However, after drawing it out, I’ve realised how little space we have.
I feel I could have done better in planning out the space. Considering this is the first iteration I feel it is okay to experiment with the different spaces. I must include a bathroom/ WC at every level to accomodate for everyone.

Atmospheres The first go at the section. I cut the section at where it is due to it being able to show the main resting space that has that dynamism effect when standing in it. Windows are located at the ceiling or at eye level due to privacy from the outside. I feel that I could have made it so that the light from the ceiling could penetrate the basement and shine on the water itself. I feel this could have been the better approach to allow for more sunlight into the basement while keeping it fairly dim.
I feel the sky lights are working well as it creates the beam of light that creates the atmosphere that I want in a bath house. We can see the main wall that goes through the whole building and scaping the spaces in both the resting area and the basement.

Interim 1 Feedback What was done well? (04-09-2021) The Crits really liked the sketch models as it encapsulate my concept the best out of everything. Overall representation is good and was presented well. What can be considered for future iterations? (0409-2021) Try introducing the sketch model in the digital side of things and see how it turned out. Revisit the facade design as it is distracting and does not really fit the overall form and context of the building. Consider the effects of time. Sunlight can be part of this as time passes the sun path changes and allows for different shadows.

Interim 1 Reflection What I felt (04-09-2021) Overall, I’m very happy with how my presentation and drawings turned out. Especially in terms of representation. However, there are still many issues and problems that needs to be fixed and redesigned. First thing I’ll do is to redesign and model the sketch model into rhino to get a sense of the space itself. Though I am quite skeptical that this is gonna work out as the spaces created will be very hard to plan and design for. What I was wrong (10-09-2021) I modelled the model in rhino and tweaked it for match the site and it turned out well. The walls will be the main structural system with partition walls used to program out the space.

Introduction to Colour
This set of colour scheme portrays the deepness of the pool. The black and darker coloured flooring makes it so that the pool is endless especially under a low light situation. 29-09-2021 I ended up using this technique/colour scheme for the interim for my deep pools in the bath house. It makes it so it looks as the pool is endless.
The opposite is done. Lighter flooring and darker ceiling to allow for a compressed feeling. 29-09-2021 I ended up using this technique/colour scheme for the interior pool. Especially in some areas where the ceiling level is lower than usual.
This was done to experiment with colour combinations. Not so much on atmospheres.

Introduction to Colour
A more muted theme is used here. The idea was to create a matte texture and not so much of a glossy finish. This turned out well and will be used in the coming interim.
This version of the reception has more of a sensous feeling to it that may draw users in more than the iteration before. 29-09-2021 I ended up using this technique/colour scheme for the reception. A similar theme throughout the whole bath house, a cool colour scheme.
I’ve always wondered what will happen if the bath house has a very bright and colourful theme. Turns out that I would not what something that is too bright. However, some areas can be brighter than others.

Deeper tones for the flooring. Especially in the sound pool, I feel this is essential as the user needs to feel as they are floating and facing a higher ceiling. 29-09-2021 I want to use this scheme for the final sound bath.
The lower ceiling feel by the difference in colour does not portray the sound bath well. It feels too compressed and stuffy in the space. 29-09-2021 I will not use this scheme for the sound bath in the final. However, it is okay to be used somewhere else in the project.

Colour Iteration 1 What was done well (11-09-2021) Overall, I’m very happy with how I experimented with colours. Even though some of the colour scheme was just mix and match, it gave me a good understanding on what colour and what tones portray in a space. Especially with a contrasting colour. Session With Josie Feedback (17-09-2021) Josie finds the dynamic form very interesting to explore in terms of lighting. The cracks and openings of these planes itself helps create shadows and light for the building. SHADOWS are equally as important as light. To bring light into the basement level, Josie suggested that the seating in the pool should be made of a transparent material that allows light to penetrate through the ground into the basement creating a water effect. Floor Plan Changes
From interim, there were many awkward spaces in the design. This plan tries to reduce these spaces and use the space more efficiently for different programs as the need for pools are too many from the Interim’s iteration. The inclusion of hot and cold baths in the basement allows for more programs. The reduction of corridor space allows for a rain shower on the ground floor and more in between spaces for resting. An important part of bathing. 07-10-2021 There are still many problems and changes to be made in this plan. But I am very happy with the changes made and I am looking forward to the future iterations to make this plan better for the final. Working early on to find a solution for the planning is important in this stage. Visual Representation can wait to be done in week 12.

Precedent Study
The Japanese style bathhouse/hotel is located in Sweden. Its renovation created a beautiful bathing space filled with concrete, stone and timber construction. 07-10-2021 I want to use a similar material palette in this scheme and I find this exercise really inspiring for my bathhouse and how it will affect the overall design decision. Similar to the precedent above, this is a renovation project. With a beautiful material palette with a combo of masonary and timber creates the luscious atmosphere. 07-10-2021 I want to use a similar material palette in this scheme and I find this exercise really inspiring for my bathhouse and how it will affect the overall design decision. I think the precedent above will be more towards my final decision rather than this combination of stone and masonary. I feel I should have found more precedents with a pure concrete interior and exterior to match the desired aesthetic of my bath house.

Material options were: Rough Plaster, Concrete Formwork, Masonary and Tiles. From the precedents and there study, I’ve come to really like the smooth concrete formwork as my material choice. The rest of the materials will not match my scheme well as it does not project the overall concept of the scheme.

R e f l e c t i o n We e k 1 0 What I felt (07-10-2021) After taking a break from Interim, it was good to look and step back and look at my overall design and planning of the scheme. There are still many problems in the planning of the scheme and I wish to resolve this as soon as possible and get into production mode for final drawings ASAP. What to do better (07-10-2021) I feel I could have spent more time to refine the planning and overall design of the scheme. I wish to tackle lighting in the next week as Josie will be joining us to give feedback and ideas on how to make our scheme better in terms of lighting for the desired atmosphere. I will create drafts of lighting and run it through Josie next week for further development and how to represent it in a detail.

Revise Modality Collage
I revised my modality collage due to the design changes and the desire for a representation of the overall concept in the collage. The background represents the form of my building and geometry. The clock represents the aspect of time stopping and having no consequences while being in the space. And finally and light rays represents the light and shadow that the planes and geometry of the scheme creates to illuminate the interior and exterior of the building. 14-10-2021 To be honest, I don’t like the new collage. It doesn’t portray the atmosphere like the previous collage did. I will implement the new with the old and experimental with it to see which is better for the final. But I am glad that I am revisiting this task as the design has changed quite a bit since I made the modality collage.

Changed Plans
More changes have been made. The details have been placed and revisiting the distribution of space table to make sure everything is there and has a proper designated floor area for all. There are some new features of in the scheme. A void that runs through the entire building in the sound bath. The redesign of the fixtures to suit majority of the angles and design of the overall building. The first floor still need some work in seperating spaces and creating more resting spaces for people who just want to have a quiet resting time after their bathing session. 14-10-2021 The scheme is slowly coming together. The implementation of new programs and atmosphere qualities will bring out the design better. Furthermore, the new fixtures with lighting details will help in further enhancing the overall atmosphere of the scheme.

Changed Plans
After a session with Hella, I’ve rejigged my scheme. Changes made were: • Increased size of void in sound bath to 2m wide • Added required maintenance rooms and storage rooms for bath equipment and chemicals • A connection from the cafe to the locker area • Seating in the rain shower area • Rain shower in basement • Changed main WC layout and shower layout to reduce awkward spaces • Rejigged first floor layout (not quite sure about this at the moment) • Added BOH stuff in basement level • Increased number of steps to basement (160 risers and 500 wide) • Created an enclosure from shower to outdoor baths to distinct between indoor and outdoors • Added a few resting areas against the walls 14-10-2021 I feel this should be final and changes that can be made in my scheme as the deadline is getting closer, as I want to start on producing the final drawings as soon as possible.

I’ve tested the new section (not complete yet, still trying to figure out how to do a staggered section in the scheme to show the other basement bath on the right side. Overall I am please with the overall form of the section as it will create many lighting opportunities. 14-10-2021 Still have to figure out the staggered section and how to draw it properly so it would not look confusing when matching up with the plan. I will figure this out for next week and create some iterations.

R e f l e c t i o n We e k 1 1 What I felt (14-10-2021) Its been a rough and tiring week. I couldn’t express my design well when I was having a session with Hella and ended up emailing her over the weekend a more detailed summary and changes made on the plans to finalise everything. It is at that point of the semester that everything slows down and the burnout happens. I will have to pick myself up for the next 2 weeks as the deadline comes closer. What to do better (14-10-2021) I should experiment on representation styles as soon as possible. This will be very crucial for the final as I would like to get as much feedback for visual representation. I would like to get at least one of every drawing or one of majrity of the drawing to its final stages in week 12 to gain as much feedback as possible.

Revise Modality Collage
Revising the Modality collage by including the old and the new. I feel this is better and conveys what I wanted to convey in the scheme well. The geometry and clock in the old collage with the reduction of figures gives out the idea of luxury as there is less people. 21-10-2021 I like this collage better than the previous iteration. The combination of new and old brings out the atmosphere I wanted to convey. However, I feel the background could be bluer with less blacks especially on the left side of the collage. That would be the final thing I would change for the final iteration.

Plan Revised
Changes in plan made. More efficient use of space. Especially in the BOH area. Cafe redesign to have an open preperation area to cater for the people in the bath. However, I feel this would still need some changes for the final. The rest of the areas are finalised and checked to fit the requirements and equipment needed. 21-10-2021 Sadly this will not be the final plan as there are still some changes to be made. However, I’m glad that I did so many iterations to get is finalise and right. Rather than regretting later and finding the issues last minute during final drawing production stage.

Perspective R epresentation
I want to test out a render to see if everything is done well interms of representation. I’m really happy with the results despite having to change a couple of things and adding in some shading and shadows. The foggy atmosphere and sunlight shining creates a luscious atmosphere that I want to convey in this luxury bath. 21-10-2021 I’m happy with the render but there are still post production stuff that needs to be added for the final presentation. However, in terms of atmosphere, I am really happy with how it turned out and the composition that it has produced.

Perspective R epresentation
I took the feedback from Christopher about having vines and plants on the roof to create lighting effects and the aspect of nature in the scheme. However, I dont think this worked out well. It looks very distracting and does not match the overall scheme and design of the building. The roof is a bit too thin, I will make it thicker for the final iteration. Other than that, the overall form and cut of the staggered section is good and it shows everything that I want to show in my section. 21-10-2021 I’m glad I tested out the plants on the roof as it did not turn out well and will not be carried forward to the final scheme. I’ve decided not to include it as it is too distracting. I’m glad I tested out the colours of the walls as well as some areas seem too saturated than others which will have to change. These changes will be made to the final drawings.

I did another section. At first I thought about not needing to include this section as it is somewhat showing similar programs and spaces in the building. However, after drawing the section, the atmosphere that is portrayed is completely different to the long section. Even though most of the drawings done during week 12 is not going to be in the final board, it is still very helpful in representation experimentation to decide on the final style. Plan Representation
This is a testing on textures in plan. There is still a couple details missing but I wanted to test out how the textures would look like in plan. There is a couple of things wrong with this plan and I will fix it for the final presentation. However, overall, I am glad with how this test run turned out. Modality Quality
I did this collage to represent what bathing meant to me and how this modality has changed my thinking and mental consideration. Through different experimentations of bathing during my pass time, I’ve discovered that having to bath relaxes and calms the mind. The idea of being afloat in the middle of nowhere, that’s how I feel when I take a bath. All the worries and stress just flows away. Furthermore, while sitting in a bath, design ideas and ephihanies may strike my mind and help me design better. Overall, I’ve really enjoyed bathing in different scenarios and atmospheres, it has opened up my mind more and will definetly help me figure things out in the future. 29-10-2021 I’ve experimented with different bathing styles, from cold to hot baths. All these different sensations relieves different parts of the body. A warm bath reliefs the mind, a cold bath relieves the stress (which I find interesting). I will be taking more cold baths in the future and will continue with this practice more often.

I’ve revised my site collage to include demographics and redesigned the context representation. I felt that the most important items are still the water programs near site which are Melbourne City Baths, Fitzroy Swimming Pool and Carlton Baths. Final Reflection The Final Push (30-10-2021) Overall, I am really happy with the end product for this project. I am very satisfied with all the drawings and images produced over the past week or so. I hope to carry on this design ethic in the future as I really enjoyed the process in this studio. Time management has really been the saviour in the final push. In previous studios and previous weeks, my time management was not the best and I often procrastinate. However, for this final few weeks, it has been perfect. I set out the plan for the day and complete it everytime. I feel this was the final driving factor for the past few weeks. Being able to get rest and work done at the same time feels very rewarding. Completing the studio has made me feel that I accomplished something. Despite the ups and downs, I held my ground and power through the end. What to do better in the future (30-10-2021) Though time management has been very well programed in the final few weeks, I aim to bring this forward in the earlier weeks in the future. Having a set plan for everything for the upcoming semester.

Thank you! Studio 13: Embody by Hella Wigge It has been a very fun studio. I think this would be the funnest studio that I have ever done in the Masters course. I really enjoyed every aspect of it, from the modelling to the freedom of choosing programs. This studio has it all and it has been a very fun time overall. The inclusion of 2 interim presentations really helped with design processing and development. This is the first studio that I have done that has 2 interims and I feel this should be normalised throughout other studios as well. The guest critics has been amazing. Special thank you to Christopher and Josie who came by and helped out in our design development. Many ideas and inspiration has derived from their great input and feedback. And overall a great time to have with them talking about your design. Hella, thank you so much for an amazing semester. It has been a blast to do this studio. The teaching methods and feedback given were all very useful and has helped immensel throughout the weeks. I have looked forward to every studio session we had as the time spent in studio has been really fun and inspiring.
