THANKFUL The word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness or gratefulness. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible of intangible.

Expressing gratitude is a way of recognizing the goodness that’s inside us and acknowledging there’s a source that lies outside. It’s a way of connecting to something larger than ourselves.

Around here we are thankful for: “The Exceptional staff hires we’ve had this past year, our Human Resources Committee and the continued efforts of our Missions.”

IN EVERYTHING GIVE THANKS “In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 It’s a relief to me that this verse doesn’t say FOR everything give thanks.

I have things in my life that don’t easily make it to my “thankful for” list. I guess one of the things I’m thankful for is that this call says IN everything give thanks, not FOR everything. We all have painful events and unwelcome circumstances that disrupt our lives. But the call of God here is deeper than surface gratitude or complaint.

“Happiness depends on happenings,” someone has said, “but joy comes from Jesus.” There is a joy that transcends circumstance. That’s what we are called to access here. Tap joy and you will find strength to face your circumstance.

As Nehemiah says, “The joy of the Lord is your strength.”

And for that I am thankful.
