You’ve heard it. Probably said it yourself. “You are what you eat!” It’s true on so many levels. It may strike you as weird on first hearing but Jesus said it one day. After feeding multiplied thousands of people in the miracle multiplication one small boy’s gift of five small loaves and two small fish Jesus says, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up in the last day.” Eww! But cool! No. Jesus wasn’t talking cannibalism! But using a gut wrenching metaphor to help us see that the secret to experiencing the eternal quality of life involves taking in the divine community in Him – spiritually digesting and metabolizing the nutrient-rich, lifesource we find in Christ! At Christ Journey we are cultivating the kind of environments where others can “Taste and see, the Lord is good!” Drink up, and taste the culture! Oxymoron, noun [ok-si-mawr-uh]
1. a figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect.
It seems the words, “non-serving Christian,” combine to form an oxymoron, especially in view of Jesus’ words, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45 NIV) How do we confess Jesus as Lord, assuming we have no involvement in the local church – His Plan A for the redemption of the world? Simply, we don’t. Have you stopped to consider lately, “What if the church really needs me?” According to 1 Corinthians 12: 12-27 and Romans 12:48, it does. Paul describes the church as a body with individual parts that are indispensable for the well being and maturing of the entire whole. That part is you. If using your gifts to serve doesn’t suit you, then the whole body suffers. Let us stop thinking, “The church exists for me and my needs,” and start thinking, “I want to be the church, serving with others, so the Good News of Jesus will offer hope to our world.” Together we will make this year the greatest ever for His Kingdom. Won’t you step up and serve?
