I’M AT A DEAD END. I’m almost 40 years old. I’ve wasted my life.

So says “Phil” in City Slickers when he breaks down in the tent after confronting a gang of drunk cowhands. Billy Crystal’s character reminds him that when they were kids and playing ball, if the ball got stuck in a tree they’d yell “Do over!” He tells Phil that his life is a clean slate. He has a “do over”.

If God didn’t give “do overs” where would we be? I’d be in more trouble than I currently am, for sure!

As the new calendar year begins, let’s remember we serve a God who gives “do overs”. Simon Peter not only received them from Jesus, but led early Christ followers to expect them from God and offer them to each other.

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

“Above all things, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 5:10, 4:8)
