THE ANCIENT GREEKS HAD FOUR WORDS FOR “LOVE”, each referring to a different context and meaning: agape, eros, philia, and storge. Agape is used in the Bible for unconditional love. It describes the way God loves, seeking the highest good for us without thought of self-benefit. Eros refers to the intimacy of sexual passion. In Biblical context it finds its highest and best expression between a man and woman sharing mutual commitment in holy matrimony. Philia speaks to friendship love, the kind of affection peers share. Then storge refers to the natural bond typically held by parents for their children, characterizing familial relationships. When it comes to “love” in our world, it seems we have much to learn. Confusion, controversy and failure scar our hearts in the many things we call “love”. Experience teaches us that whatever else love is, it is not easy.

But nothing is impossible for God. And He comes to us in love, meets us at a cross with love pouring from his head, hands, side and feet, showing us how His love never fails. He passes through the brokenness and rises triumphant in love to offer us the future that forgiveness makes possible. Whatever your relational hurts and heartaches, I’m praying you will feel the love God has for you and let Him lead you forward. He loves us just as we are. But He loves us too much to leave us that way!
