BUILDING WITH

To create a dramatic entrance, homeowner Regan Foster cut a hefty steel door from one of the nine shipping containers that make up his family’s home, removed a panel, and fitted it with glass.

BLOCKS

“We love hosting parties and we love to cook, so it was really important for us to have a big kitchen island that people could gather around,” Regan says of the 14-foot-long workspace that features glossy white IKEA cabinetry topped with soapstone countertops. On the back wall, hexagonal marble tiles provide a textural backdrop for the custom steel hood and reclaimedhickory open shelving, both designed by Regan.

Intrigued by the design opportunities—and challenges—that come with building a shipping-container home, a Chaffee Park couple and their architect tackle the task of turning nine of the sturdy steel boxes into a unique family dwelling. story by CHRISTINE DEORIO • photography by BENJAMIN RASMUSSEN APRIL/MAY APRIL/MAY 2020 2020 || 5280 5280 HOME HOME ||
