Welcome to our birthday celebrations! The very first CRE was delivered during a chilly February in 1985, at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London. The venue was apt because the small seed dropped into the earth by Gospatric and Diana Home quickly sprouted to become the biggest annual exhibition of its kind in Europe. Now this young upstart has entered middle age!
In the Bible, the number 40 often symbolises a period of probation, testing or trial – and precedes a significant change or transition. Examples include 40 days of rain during the Great Flood, 40 years of wandering in the wilderness for the Israelites, and Jesus’ 40 days of temptation.
In the past four decades, a large part of our mission has focussed on maintenance – offering cost-effective ways to keep much-loved buildings open, supported by an often-declining number of worshippers.
However, to extend the horticultural analogy, perhaps a new seedling has taken root that implies ‘a significant change or transition’ is imminent.
Bible Society’s much-publicised report, The Quiet Revival, suggests that Generation Z, born in the late 1990s or early 21st century, show ‘above-average levels of warmth to spirituality’. Hostility and apathy to Christianity are being replaced by a new openness. The report will be a major point for discussion this week (see page 24). Whatever the case, our hope and prayer is that we will enter a new phase – one of nurturing fresh and exciting growth as well as caring for ‘that which remains’.
Perhaps the best way to sum it up is to quote Psalm 40 (of course). ‘I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry… He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.
‘Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.’

THIS YEAR’S Big Church Read will be launched at CRE 25 –with Bear Grylls’ new book The Greatest Story Ever Told at its heart.
‘Bear retells the gospel through the eyes of five of the people who knew Jesus best – his mother Mary, Thomas, Simon Peter, John and Mary Magdalene,’ said Steve Barnett, one of the founders of the Big Church Read. ‘Their
first-hand encounters bring the story to life with intensity, warmth and deep reverence. At the heart of it all are Jesus’ own words, taken directly from the Bible. Our vision is to get churches reading it together, after which we hope they’ll share the story of Jesus with friends and family who don’t yet know him.’
CRE 25 visitors will be invited to buy 10 copies each to give
away as presents at Christmas.
‘Giving someone a book by Bear Grylls – an adventurer, writer and survival expert – is such an easy way to start a conversation,’ Steve told CRE News. ‘We are aiming to see one million copies given away at Christmas!’

INCLUSIVITY IN our worship services has always been a priority – now it’s time to think about the wines we use.
So say Frank Wright Mundy (FWM), supplier to churches across the UK for 160 years. Messrs Wright and Mundy saw the company’s non-alcoholic communion wine as an answer to the impact alcohol was having in 1858. World-renowned preacher C H Spurgeon was among many church leaders to
commend the wine to their peers.
‘We are pleased to be continuing the work to this day,’ said FWM’s Tom Barnes. ‘As a family-run business, working in partnership with churches, throughout the UK, we offer two varieties of wine and will offer further guidance at the exhibition.’

THE DISTINCTIVE red Nord keyboard has become almost synonymous with the current sound and standard in modern church worship – and there are very good reasons why.
So says Matt Cossey (pictured), principal at Nexus ICA and musical director for renowned US artist Gloria Gaynor. ‘While it is primarily the heart and inner posture of the musicians and leaders that set the right atmosphere in church, instruments can back this up,’ Matt told CRE News. ‘The Nord provides a solid bed to the sound. It holds down harmony and is also great at ambient sounds
that create a worshipful atmosphere. The “prayer pad” may have become a bit of a cliché, but there’s something to be said for the way this constant warm sound helps focus our minds and hearts on Jesus.’
Matt believes the Nord excels in areas a church player is likely to require with diverse piano sounds, an ‘amazing’ organ emulation and powerful effects. He will demonstrate how your church can get the best from the keyboard at the Headline Audio/ Nord stand on the second day of CRE 25 (Thu 16 Oct).

A RANGE of ready-made church flags – designed to support outreach, services and events throughout the Christian calendar – will be on display at CRE for the first time this year. Themes include Welcome, Prayer Space, Messy Church, Christmas and Easter services – and many more.
Adam Haycock, managing director of Sailflags, said: ‘All our flags are highly visual, easy to set up and ideal for churches looking to
boost visibility. They also come in a variety of sizes with a wide range of base options to suit grass, tarmac and indoor surfaces. We offer a free design service for churches that want to include their own logos, themes or colours.’
Visitors to CRE 25 can take advantage of exclusive event offers and speak to the Sailflags team about bespoke options.

may be on the rise but one company will be at CRE 25 to emphasise the enduring value of physical offertory envelopes.
Lockie Limited, operating under the brand Lockie Church, has been a cornerstone in the printing industry for more than 60 years, specialising in the manufacture and supply of church collection envelopes, charity envelopes and related stationery.
‘Our experience in church and charity envelopes fills a unique niche in the printing industry,’ said Lockie’s Tim Hunt. ‘We recognise the historical and cultural
significance of offertory envelopes in providing a tangible and personal way for congregations to contribute.’
Recent upgrades in print machinery allow for full colour print facilities and customers can now fully customise their church envelopes to incorporate church details, custom images, text and verses.
‘The bespoke finish is completely down to the customer’s imagination,’ Tim told CRE News.
‘Understanding these options can enhance your community’s giving experience. We stand as a trusted partner for parishes and charities across the UK.’

GROUND-BREAKING technology that delivers live speech transcription, in any language, directly to a mobile phone or AV system, will be a major focus at CRE 25.
SpeakSee will have church leaders amazed at how it can help deaf people and those hard of hearing, as well as doubling as a livetranslation device for nonnative speakers. This is a
brand-new product in the UK, solely distributed to churches by DM Music, who have been established for more than 30 years as one of the leading, dedicated church audio-visual system installers.
Adam Lee, the UK regional director for the Dutch-based SpeakSee company, will join DM Music on their stand as well as giving a live demonstration of SpeakSee’s capabilities at
the ‘My Church Needs One of Those’ presentation area (1.40pm, Wed 15 Oct).
‘SpeakSee’s live dictation will also be in constant use in all the CRE talks areas,’ Adam told CRE News. ‘By scanning the QR code at the relevant stage, you will be able connect to SpeakSee automatically on your phone!’

IT’S NEVER GOOD to see people wriggling restlessly in their pew during a long sermon –that’s why the Church Cushion Company (CCC) are exhibiting at this year’s CRE for the first time.
Over the past 28 years this family-run business has proudly made thousands of pew cushions and kneelers that lie in wait for visitors in the tiniest of chapels and largest of cathedrals.
‘Ordering cushions for your
church may be a long way off,’ said CCC’s Jon Redish, ‘but we’ll be happy to chat through the process – so you know where to go when the time comes. We’ve supplied more than 1,100 places of worship across the UK and pride ourselves on working in a professional but friendly and easy-going manner – so pop by for a chat!’

MORE THAN 4000 UK churches are reaching hundreds of thousands of school children every year – bringing Bible stories to life in creative ways.
Made up entirely of local volunteers, Open the Book is a network of storytelling teams that present short, scripted stories in simple costumes at school assemblies. One of the Bible Society’s key resources for churches, the project brings
more than 90 stories to life.
‘We aim to make the Bible accessible, enjoyable, meaningful and memorable,’ said Rachel Cully, team lead for OtB. ‘We engage a congregation in mission, no matter their age or stage of faith. We also support, serve and forge relationship with local schools, increasing both the children and storytellers’ biblical knowledge.’ As Jenny, a school chaplain from Doncaster, said: ‘We have
The Miracle Meal – a faithcentred brand dedicated to making communion simple, accessible and meaningful – will exhibit for the first time at CRE 25.
Specialising in pre-packaged, ready-to-serve communion cups, The Miracle Meal brings together both elements of communion – a fresh altar wafer and non-alcoholic grape juice – in one convenient, hygienic serving.
Founded by Dominic and Alidia Symes, The Miracle Meal was born from a place
great fun – there’s so much laughter getting dressed up and rehearsing.’
‘I work with many churches struggling to engage with schools, and to many of their problems this is the answer,’ said Rev Huw Thomas, director of education for the Diocese of Sheffield. ‘Open the Book is a gem of a resource.’

CHURCHES REQUIRING an access audit need look no further than one of CRE’s longest-standing exhibitors.
MEB Design, exhibitors at the very first CRE in 1985 (see page 14), are now able to assess a building, an environment or a service in terms of its accessibility and inclusivity – to ensure the protected characteristics identified by the Equality Act 2010 are not discriminated
THEY’RE OWNED by a charity and all available profits go to good causes – no wonder Ecclesiastical claim to be different from other insurers.
‘By taking out home insurance with us, our customers help us give even
against. The audit identifies barriers to access and how to mitigate such barriers. The final report can assist with the development of an action plan to improve a building’s accessibility and inclusivity.
‘We can help offer advice on reasonable adjustments which are cost-effective and deliverable within an accountable timescale,’ said MEB Design’s Maggie Forrester.
‘If this is an area we can
help you with, let’s have a conversation at CRE 25.’
MEB Design, with three offices in Kent, Oxford and South Bank, London, have recently used an access audit, as well as their heritage expertise, to facilitate the planning application for Putney Methodist Church (pictured).

more profits to even more good causes,’ said managing director Richard Coleman.
‘We thank them for their support.’
The company has retained top spot in the Fairer Finance Home Insurance league table for a record twenty-first time beating 48 insurers including Bank of Scotland, TSB, Lloyds Bank and Nationwide. The company came first in
most trusted, customer happiness and complaints performance – achieving an overall customer experience score of 78 per cent. James Daley, managing director at Fairer Finance, said: ‘It’s an incredible achievement - one that no company has managed in any other sector.’

To
celebrate our 40th anniversary we talked to five organisations who exhibited at the very first event at the Royal Horticultural Halls in 1985 – and are also on the exhibition floor this year
Church Army evangelist
Eric Heselwood was on the organisation’s stand at the first-ever CRE. ‘We had created a video of our work called Street Level – a new idea at the time – which ran on constant repeat for passers-by,’ he recalled. ‘CRE was something completely new.’
We have found CRE to be an excellent place to meet people interested in our work and to share our resources that train and equip people in evangelism and mission. And when BBC TV Songs of Praise presenter Pam Rhodes was unable to get to CRE in Northern Ireland, Philip Johanson OBE (left), who was Church Army chief secretary 1990–2006, stepped in and opened the exhibition in her place!
• Jane Henderson, faith empowered development officer, Church Army
As Christians it mattered to us that there would be an exhibition specifically for the benefit of churches and to spread the gospel.
The insatiable desire for literature and information at the first CRE meant I had to go back to the office each evening to print off more catalogues! Snow on the second day didn’t put off visitors. I remember many requests for the new-fangled ‘microphones without wires’ – which are now taken for granted!
CRE remains a shop window and a valuable opportunity to meet people face to face who can see, touch and try out equipment.
• Malcolm Cunnings, founder and owner, Cunnings Recording Associates
We are delighted our relationship with CRE dates back to the very first one. The front page of the Church Times (Fri 8 Feb 1985) shows Margaret Duggan, a well-known contributor to the paper and Greg Cooper, then classified-advertising manager, manning our stand.
We continue to be the principal weekly newspaper reporting on matters concerning the Church of England but are now firmly in the digital age. CRE is a unique and essential way to connect with church leaders, parishes and buyers. Nothing beats meeting our readers face to face and you will find out more on the Hymns Ancient & Modern stand at CRE 25.
• Josie Gunn, sales and marketing manager (CHP and Canterbury Press)
Mark Eddison (right) was on our stand at the first CRE where we themed our exhibition ‘Your dormant resource’. ‘Church buildings were mostly cold, uninviting and inflexible at the time but we explained how they could become a resource for mission and community involvement,’ he said. ‘There was only one other architect on the show floor – so we came to the conclusion there was plenty of work for us to do!’
Returning to CRE each year enables us to stay in touch with churches and clients that we know, as well as making new contacts. Some church projects take many years to get off the ground, so catching up year after year can be valuable. It is also pleasing to hear how building projects have (often) transformed church life.
• Paul Chester, director MEB Design Ltd
CRE is exactly 10 years older than me, so I don’t have memories of the first exhibition but from our time as exhibitors, to leading the operation for a few years, we have always benefitted from our partnership. I cannot wait to see what wonderful memories will be created at the 40th anniversary.
My colleague Jack Imbert-Terry was at CRE at the Excel Arena in 2015. ‘It is such a huge venue with many different halls and ours was alongside the one hosting Comicon,’ he recalls. ‘I remember being in the main aisle between both halls, watching Xenomorphs and anime characters mingling with dog-collared members of the clergy. It was very surreal and very funny!’
• Chay Harty, domestic sales and stock co-ordinator, Bible Society
It is our pleasure and honour to dedicate this year’s arts theatre to the memory and legacy of entertainer and evangelist Steve Legg.
A regular exhibitor at CRE, Steve, who died in September 2024 aged 57, began his career in 1988 using escapology to grab the attention of an audience. He became well known for presenting the Gospel using a combination of comedy and magic tricks. A prolific author, he went on to write 20 books and found Sorted, a lifestyle magazine for men with a Christian perspective.
To honour and extend our good and much-missed friend’s legacy, we are bringing together some of the people Steve worked with over the years – on Sorted magazine and at events all over the UK (see programme on page 19).
Following the success of a pilot scheme, Sorted Digital online magazine will officially launch at the CRE 25. Editor Val Fraser, who will be at the Steve Legg Arts Café and Sorted Digital stand (Y4), said: ‘I’m excited to be speaking publicly about Sorted Digital for the first time at CRE. I feel the readers are behind me and want to keep Steve’s legacy going into the future.’
Enjoy a two-hour, magazine-styled programme, hosted by Ishmael and Sue Rinaldi, featuring many friends who worked with the late Steve Legg.
Sue and Ishmael will chat to a panel of guests – musicians, comedians, writers and those involved in men’s ministry –who shared Steve’s passion to see the good news communicated effectively to everyone. They also have another thing in common – they called Steve a friend.

Something wonderful is about to happen in the old, lonely, empty barn. But the grumpy owl who lives there just wants to be left alone. Can any of the other animals help him change his mind?
This charming picture storybook tells the story of Jesus’ birth through the eyes of an owl who seems determined to miss all the excitement. 978 1 78140 529 1 |
