Heading in the right direction
It’s all about the finding the right people, in the right place at the right time. Ask members of Aintree Baptist and St John the Divine in New York (see p10). With budgets always tight, both churches were looking for the right people to improve their facilities. Some specialists offer much but don’t deliver. Wisely, Rev Geoff Bentley made the two-hour journey from Liverpool to Birmingham last November. At CRE 23 in Solihull he found what he was looking for – in the shape of CRE exhibitor BCHN (see p4).
The leaders of St John the Divine in New York went even further afield, contracting fellow CRE 24 exhibitors Irish Contract Seating (ICS) to supply 2000 bespoke chairs. ‘Years of dynamic and exceptionally cordial dialogue between us and ICS has borne fruit,’ said St John’s Dean Patrick Malloy (see p10).
We are writing this in mid-summer. Of the hundreds already pre-registered to attend CRE 24, many will travel to Milton Keynes from some distance. No wonder! The level and range of expertise CRE offers, from fund-raising to faith sharing, contactless giving to clergy clothing, is unique in the UK – thanks to our loyal exhibitors, speakers and musicians.
The handbook you are reading is posted out, free of charge, to thousands of key local church leaders and office holders before the exhibition. If you are one of those who receives it, there is still time for you and your church to invest in a day of discovery at CRE 24 – to find the right person, in the right place, at the right time.
We look forward to welcoming you.

FOOTBALL FREESTYLER
DAN TO OPEN CRE
World-renowned professional football freestyler Daniel Cutting will open CRE 24 – and remind us how churches can use sport as a vital bridge to their local communities.
A 10-time Guinness World Record holder, Daniel, who lives in Milton Keynes, specialises in live entertainment, product launches, corporate events, social campaigns, commercials – and even the occasional school assembly or high security prison! He has more than five
million followers across social media and prides himself on providing the highest quality form of football entertainment.
He has been working as a full-time football freestyler since graduating from university with his skills taking him to more than 40 countries. Depending on the occasion, he will tell audiences about his Christian faith.
‘I was delighted to be asked to open CRE,’ he said. You can be sure it will be an entertaining opening ceremony.
Aintree Baptist: scaling the planning application hurdles
MAKING PERSONAL CONTACT with experts is the unique value of CRE – ask Rev Geoff Bentley of Aintree Baptist Church, Liverpool.
He met Mark Newall, director of BCHN Architects, at CRE 23. Their conversation led to the company being invited to plan the remodelling of the Victorian era building.
‘We are now progressing the design towards a planning application via our collaborative design process,’ said Mark. The whole congregation has been involved with company experts holding a series of meetings to determine individual church members’
BCHN were asked to remodel the present building, demolish existing extensions and create a new development to include a meeting hall for at least 200 people, various smaller meeting rooms, a reception area, office and foyer café.
‘It was a long process as we wanted the whole church, neighbours and other stakeholders to be satisfied with the final plans,’ said Mark. ‘Our job was to provide those facilities and in consultation with the church, that is what has happened.’

Make a great start with Genesis
ENERGETIC VISITORS to this year’s Spring Harvest availed themselves of neon green sweatbands bearing the legend Big Start Boot Camp – 5000 of which were produced by CRE 24 exhibitor Genesis UK.
‘We are always looking for innovative products to give customers the best available,’ said managing director Wayne Griffith. ‘They are available for individuals who want a one-off product or a number views.
of items that include details publicising a local church event, for example.’ On the Genesis UK stand will be a range of organic tee shirts, recycled polo shirts, school and college leavers hoodies, work uniforms, race and event t-shirts, children’s garments and much, much more – printed or embroidered to visitors’ designs.

Your services, beamed worldwide
MORE THAN 500 churches now reach audiences in 228 countries and territories – thanks to Church Services TV (CSTV).
David Harvey, a director of the company, said: ‘Our streaming services help parishes reach housebound parishioners, people living in nursing
homes or abroad or those just feeling lonely. CSTV was designed for nontechnical users and can be remotely controlled from smart phones or tablets. This means authorised church personnel can turn the system on or off, set up schedules and recordings and track viewer statistics.
Pass the plate? No, tap the app
THE BRAND-NEW Tap to Give contactless app will be available at CRE 24, allowing people to donate by simply tapping their bank card or phone against a phone with the iKnow Church giving app installed. The money is then securely transferred from donor to church bank account.
With a smartphone all that is required, specialist contactlessgiving hardware does not need to be purchased. Since the soft launch of the app, iKnow has found the average donation to churches using contactless giving is £8.89.
Andrea Best of New Life Bible Church, said: ‘As a small church, we were pleased to be able to download the app via our mobile phones, which was easy to set up alongside our iKnow software. Everything went smoothly and individuals were very receptive to using it.’ iKnow also offer administration software developed just for churches to help with administration, pastoral care and finances.
• iKnow Church will be on stand F1 at CRE 24
‘We provide embedded players on church websites and also on Facebook and YouTube automatically, making CSTV the most versatile application
available. We work with churches, taking them through every step of the process.’

Speaksee set to ‘amaze’
GROUND-BREAKING technology that delivers live speech transcription directly to a mobile phone or AV system will be launched at CRE 24.
Iain Harvey-Smith, of DM Music, believes Speaksee will have church leaders amazed at how it can help deaf people and those who hard of hearing.
‘This is a brand-new product in the UK,’ he
said. ‘Seeing Speaksee in action will provide a better understanding of its capabilities than any description I can offer!’
An added benefit of Speaksee is that it can also be an effective languagetranslation tool for those for whom English is not their native language
DM Music – established over 30 years ago as a dedicated
church supplier and installer of sound equipment – is now one of the leading audiovisual system installers in churches having installed systems in over 3,000 churches.
Adam Lee, the UK regional director for the Dutch-based Speaksee company, will join Iain at CRE 24.

How green was my vestry
CLIMATE CHANGE is already affecting churches and buildings. So, while reducing your carbon footprint is important, it’s also worth considering how to minimise any risks a changing climate might introduce.
Ecclesiastical Insurance’s Made Simple Guide will be available at CRE 24 – a handy reference guide covering a range of topics, from reducing energy consumption to links to further support you and
your church. Helen Gray and Chris Pitt of Ecclesiastical will also speak on ‘Greening your mission’ (11am, Thu 10 Oct).
‘When starting or planning a project, it’s a good idea to contact us as soon as possible,’ said Helen. ‘Our dedicated risk management and customer services teams can help you achieve net zero carbon and ensure you start off on the right foot.’

Classic and contemporary
EVERY NEW CHAIR at St.
John the Divine in New York has been meticulously crafted to compliment the cathedral’s existing architecture – and even features a personalised dedication plaque.
‘We are truly humbled that Dean Patrick Malloy and his team chose to work with us,’ said Gavin Duignan, owner of CRE 24 exhibitor ICS Furniture and designer of the ICON 40 chair. ‘Each of the 2000 chairs not only meets functional requirements but is engraved with the cathedral’s memorable rose window emblem.’
Dean Patrick Malloy said: ‘Modern objects
can be jarring in historic buildings, but the contrast between the classic and the contemporary, when done well, can be extremely pleasing and even evocative. Years of dynamic and exceptionally cordial dialogue between us and ICS has borne fruit. The chairs allow us to stage diverse events – music, visual arts, lectures, panel discussions, and, above all, the worship of God – efficiently and beautifully. We are delighted that the cathedral is ICS’ first major American commission.’

Mission on the Map
Some amazing new opportunities are opening up that can make a significant difference to God’s kingdom – in the UK and around the world.
That’s the view of Mike Frith (pictured above), who spent 10 years as a pilot with Mission Aviation Fellowship before setting up the One Stop Centre for Advice and Resources (OSCAR) 23 years ago.
He will host Mission on the Map at CRE 24, involving up to a dozen mission agencies including Church Mission Society, CMJ UK, World Outreach, Transform Europe Network,
Momentum Yes, Scripture Union, OSCAR (hosting the CRE Jobs Board) and Rural Mission Solutions.
He will also host a panel discussion on both days of CRE, introducing a series of short TED-style talks.
‘It’s easy to presume that CRE is just about the maintenance of local churches,’ explains Brett Pitchfork, CRE’s event director. ‘However, from our earliest days in the 1980s, mission has been at the heart of our agenda, too.’

‘I think before I’d struggle reading the Bible because it felt so big, whereas the dyslexia Bible is just so much easier to read for me.’
Clair Natt
Did you know that one in ten people in the UK have dyslexia? That’s around six million people.
We believe everyone should have access to the Bible, but we recognise that reading the Bible can be hindered by learning difficulties, language barriers, and lower literacy levels.
One of our biggest achievements this year involved publishing the whole Bible in a dyslexia-friendly format. We are the only UK publisher to have completed this milestone. The dyslexia-friendly Bible is split across 27 editions and each edition follows formatting guidelines from the British Dyslexia Association.
Our range of accessible resources makes the Bible available and accessible for everyone. Share these resources with your church and help people to grow in confidence to read, understand and talk about the Bible.
