Planting, watering – and being patient
Sometimeswe have to wait before seeing the results of our labours. For a few, sadly, the results come too late. Ask Eleanor Farjeon. Like many, I grew up aware she had written the words to the inspiring hymn ‘Morning Has Broken’. As a child, however, I never really appreciated the lovely Scottish tune that accompanied it – usually played, dirge-like, on a Sunday morning pipe organ.
Farjeon died in 1965, a few short years before pop star Cat Stevens and the musician who will open CRE Midlands 23, Rick Wakeman, made the hymn an international hit. Wakeman’s distinctive opening arpeggios stir the soul and usher in Stevens’ gentle, awe-inspired vocals: ‘Praise with elation, praise every morning, God’s recreation of the new day!’
I hope our special guest will tell the tale of how the executives at Stevens’ record company had no belief the hymn could be commercially successful. When they finally released it as a single, ‘Morning Has Broken’ became a huge hit worldwide, reaching number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the U.S. easy listening chart.
Dozens of new products and services will be on display at this exhibition. Some will be seized on gratefully by churches and individuals, becoming instant ‘hits’. Others may not seem to capture people’s imagination in the short term and their creators might be tempted to feel despondent. The simple truth is we have no idea how and when our creations will take root.
While this exhibition has been established for almost 40 years, it has had its ups and downs. An experimental CRE in Washington DC in the late 80s, for example, failed to attract more than a handful of visitors. Yet UCB Radio’s Word for Today bible reading notes, originally written by the late Bob Gass and sent to millions worldwide, were conceived at that one event. UCB’s Ian Mackie travelled to Washington and, while the exhibition itself was commercially unsuccessful, Mackie met Gass for the first time. The rest is publishing history.
As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:6: ‘I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.’
We trust and pray that both exhibitor and visitor alike will be encouraged and renewed at Cranmore Park, always aware that, whether the time here may or may not seem immediately successful, it is God who gives the increase – and in his time.

Why an ancient church went underground
AN UNDERFLOOR HEATING system fed by air source heat pumps will hugely reduce one ancient church’s carbon footprint per hour of use.
St Mary’s Church in Ely (pictured) began a major building transformation and turned to longstanding CRE exhibitor Church Build UK for help and advice. That
advice played a huge part in the £950k revamp of the 800-year-old, Grade 1 Listed building – to give it a wider local ministry and a long-term positive impact on the health of the building.
Priest in charge, Rev. Chris Hill, said: ‘We’re looking forward to returning to a renewed and transformed
space which can be used by the church community – 16 hours a day, seven days a week. It will be wonderful.’
Nigel Walter, the visionary who set up Church Build and is founding director of Archangel Architects, said: ‘Knowing where to start in tackling our climate emergency is challenging. We will be on hand at CRE Midlands 23 to ‘offer advice and guidance.’

Introducing the ‘me and eucharist’
A BIRMINGHAM PASTOR who started his own company creating easy-to-use communion containers, will exhibit his products for the first time at CRE Midlands.
Holding a Masters’ degree in medical engineering, Bayo Oniye sold hip and knee replacements to orthopaedic surgeons before becoming copastor with his wife Bakang, a pharmacist, at Five Grace Church in Birmingham.
Together they started mmeyou – ‘a combination of two words — Me and You – from the words of our Lord Jesus: “This is My body (Me) which is broken for you (you).”’ The prefilled (all-in-
one or separate) communion cups of red grape juice have a choice of packaged communion cracker or wafer.
‘Our vision is to serve the local church with a great tasting and hygienicallypackaged product, especially important after Covid-19,’ said Bayo. ‘These are Holy Communion elements made from 100 per cent natural ingredients – ideal for individuals, families, small groups, churches and people taking part in services online. No matter how small or great your needs, we are here for you.’

No need to fear the staging process
BE IT A CHORAL production, theatrical performance or presentation of ideas, an event is so much better if it can be viewed easily.
‘A stage helps to create the perfect platform,’ said Bill Bates (pictured), business development manager at Gopak Ltd. The British manufacturer and longstanding CRE exhibitor has been producing its Ultralight staging system since 2006, alongside a range of lightweight folding tables.
One church in Sheffield bought a Gopak stage when Covid-19 struck. For the first time their church services were transmitted online and a stage gave the music group and speaker much more visibility. The system is still
in use.
‘Our Ultralight staging system, constructed from aluminium like all other Gopak products, is a simple folding option ideal for any organisation without a permanent stage,’ said Bill. ‘It is great for choirs, musicians and performers.
‘We have a range of 14 additional staging packages that include apron-fronted options, catwalks and drum risers. With straightforward assembly and disassembly, Ultralight is ideal for churches with limited time or space. Unlike many other options, our stages are made in Britain with care.’

When a bauble is a lifeline
WITH ALMOST no tourists in Bethlehem our baubles have become even more important.
So says Suzan Sahori, a stalwart of the local Christian community, who has created a thriving business with talented Palestinian artisans, helping them earn a muchneeded income.
‘Times are especially tough,
so Bethlehem Baubles have become a lifeline,’ explains Suzan, who was born in the town and has lived through many changes. ‘We especially rely on the UK to support us.’ The project brings three faiths together in a part of the world not famed for unity. Good News: read all about it
WHILE TV AND RADIO news bulletins seem to be never-ending gloom and despair, hearing the cry ‘Get the good news here!’ makes a welcome change.
It was made by three evangelists working with the Outreach UK mission in Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard where they were giving out copies of the Good News
outreach newspaper. Packed with testimonies of people whose lives have been changed by an encounter with Jesus Christ, the newspaper gets the Gospel out on the streets.
‘We gave away several hundred in less than an hour,’ says evangelist Andy Godfrey. ‘The fact that it proclaims nothing but good
by the Muslim community, painted by Christian women and shipped around the world by Israelis. The designs are changed every year and a growing number of supporters are building up a collection of baubles and giving them as Christmas gifts.

Written and designed for non-Christians, the monthly publication contains stories of both celebrities and ordinary people who have come to know Jesus. With something
for everyone it can be offered to everyone. And there is space on the back for a local church to put its contact details.

Outranking Asda and pocketing the difference
ESSENTIAL SUPPORT to churches and their communities is now available through new grant-giving programmes from Ecclesiastical, Benefact Group and their charitable owner Benefact Trust.
The Building Improvement Grants programme helps protect and enhance churches and Christian buildings ¬–ensuring their continued use for generations to come. The programme will support capital costs such as essential repairs and improvements
(pictured), conservation and restoration and energyefficiency measures. Also, the new Community Impact Grants Programme, which helps projects making a positive and transformative impact on lives and communities, is also now open for applications.
The Benefact Group finished higher in the rankings than corporate giants such as Vodafone Group plc, Goldman Sachs International and ASDA Stores Ltd. The group has given almost £200m to good causes
since 2014 and is aiming to reach its ambitious cumulative target of giving £250m by 2025.
Mark Hews, group chief executive at Benefact Group, said: ‘Owned by a charity, here at Benefact Group all available profits go to good causes, helping to transform thousands of lives for the better. The more the group grows, the more we can give and make an even bigger difference in society.’

Harness the art of conversation
TALKING is particularly crucial to the mental and emotional health and development of children and young people – that’s why the Ugly Duckling Co have produced Table Talk for Children aged 7-11 years.
The box contains six themes – home life, school time, the world, well-being, friends and technology – helping children express their thoughts and feelings around issues that really matter to them.
‘When we support children
to talk it strengthens our relationships with them and gives them space to express how they are thinking and feeling,’ said the Ugly Duckling Co’s director Sharon Lanfear. ‘You can use these resources if you are a parent, grandparent, a children’s worker or a teacher. We are passionate about helping people find life in all its fullness through the power of conversation.’

Embracing Middle East artisans
BEAUTIFUL HANDICRAFTS
from Middle Eastern artisans will be on display at CRE Midlands 23.
‘We have always been passionate about finding ways to enable artisans to market their lovely products abroad, whilst still making sure fair trade practices are met,’ said Dan O’Callaghan, head of trading at Embrace the Middle East, a Christian development charity tackling poverty and injustice in the region. ‘We are super excited to showcase handicrafts from one of our long-standing Lebanese partners for the first time.’
Tahaddi is a community-
based organisation serving an informal settlement in Beirut. Well known for their work in education and primary healthcare, Tahaddi also has an initiative called the Sewing Atelier in which 25 local women are trained as seamstresses. They go on to produce beautiful, practical merchandise such as bags, aprons, oven mitts and the like.
‘These are sold in local markets and hospitals and through local businesses and NGOs – this can be lifechanging for families living on the breadline,’ said Dan. Embrace the Middle East are on stand E3 at CRE Midlands 23

Gone – but not forgotten
Musician Rick Wakeman will pay tribute to his old friend Dan Wooding at the opening of CRE Midlands 23
Achance meeting in a music shop led to a life-long friendship between musician Rick Wakeman and journalist Dan Wooding, whose life will celebrated at the opening of CRE Midlands 23.
Dan, who died in March 2020 aged 80, was working on the Middlesex County Times in west London in 1969, when he visited a local store called the Musical Bargain Centre – keen to report on something more interesting than the local flower show. He heard a Vox Continental organ being played ‘for fun’ and asked the owner of the store who was at the keyboard.
‘I was studying at the Royal College of Music at the time, playing in studio sessions on the side,’ recalls Rick. ‘Dan introduced himself and asked me what sort of recordings I was involved in. I had just finished adding mellotron to a track called Space Oddity by an upcoming artist called David Bowie. I didn’t think it was particularly newsworthy but Dan said: “That’s good enough for me”. I began to
realise nothing much happened where the Middlesex County Times circulated!’
After the feature had been published, Rick invited Dan round to his house and they discovered they were both Christians.
‘My father was a Baptist, my mother a strict Methodist,’ recalls Rick. ‘I attended the Baptist church in South Harrow. I was never forced to go but I absolutely loved it. For 14 or 15 years that church was a major part of my life.’
He went on to perform with top bands like the Strawbs and YES but is best known for his own albums like The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Journey to the Centre of the Earth and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. He has also played on more than 2,000 tracks by artistes as diverse as Cat Stevens (Morning Has Broken), Mary Hopkins, Cilla Black, Elton John, Edison Lighthouse, David Bowie (Life on Mars as well as Space Oddity) Lou Reed, Dana (who has opened CRE three

times), Des O’Connor, Al Stewart, Ralph McTell and Harry Nilsson.
Dan Wooding went on to become a star reporter for the Sunday People but a reporting trip to Uganda, where he witnessed the horrors of Idi Amin’s regime, caused him to leave the tabloids behind. He began to specialise in eyewitness coverage of persecuted Christians. With his wife, Norma, he founded ASSIST (Aid to Special Saints in Strategic Times) Ministries and ASSIST News Service, which transmitted stories to 2,600 media outlets around the world.
He also found time to write a biography of his friend under the title Rick Wakeman: The Caped Crusader. He will be interviewed at CRE Midlands by Dan’s son, Peter, who has followed his father into journalism. Sadly, and like so many others, Dan died during lockdown and there was no opportunity to come together to celebrate
his life. A great supporter of CRE, the exhibition organisers are putting that right at the opening of CRE Midlands 23.
‘When you pass on, when the good Lord takes you, he doesn’t take what you leave behind,’ says Rick. ‘That’s not just true for artists or writers. When people lose someone close, I always tell them to live with their memories because those aren’t taken away. Someone should make a film about Dan’s life. At one time he was imprisoned in Nigeria, which wasn’t unusual for him bearing in mind the places he was visiting and the situations he found himself in! I phoned Norma and asked her if she was concerned. “No, he always gets out eventually,” she said.
‘I have many stories about the great man and some of them I can tell, too! I look forward to playing Gone, But Not Forgotten at the opening of the exhibition (10am, Wed 8 Nov) in memory of my dear friend.’

Resourcing mission in a new era
Withnew opportunities in world mission opening up beyond the pandemic, Mission on the Map, a focused area in the Diamond Suite at CRE Midlands 23, will help visitors make the most of them.
‘We see the potential for amazing new opportunities that can make a significant difference to God’s kingdom, in the UK and around the world,’ said Mike Frith, who spent 10 years as a pilot with Mission Aviation Fellowship before setting up the One Stop
Centre for Advice and Resources (OSCAR) 23 years ago. Several mission agencies will exhibit including World Outreach, BMS World Mission, Transform Europe Network, Mission Assist, Formission College, Teach Beyond, Scripture Union, OSCAR (hosting the CRE Jobs Board), France Mission, Church Mission Society and OMF.
Mike will also host a panel discussing three current issues of concern: Why is the UK still sending missionaries? (12pm, Wed 8 Nov), Resourcing mission in a new era (2.30pm, Wed 8 Nov) and Pandemic, war and global mission (2.30pm, Thu 9 Nov)
‘It’s easy to presume that CRE is just about the maintenance of local churches,’ explains Brett Pitchfork, CRE’s event director. ‘However, from our earliest days in the 1980s, mission has been at the heart of our agenda, too, and we are delighted to give it an even greater focus at CRE Midlands 23.’

I’ve been deacon for 16 and have to say: even with deacons added (out of 300 participants), this still like a glaring omission that to be corrected. The breadth and depth of diaconate ministry in the UK around the world but particularly in the USA, Canada, the Americas and Western Europe cannot be underestimated. observers have quite accurately described deacons as embodying ‘vocation of the threshold,’ living bridge between the clergy and laity – standing metaphorical watch at the doorway of the church, lend hand or make connection who hunger for help, or hope or some small act of grace. The Vatican might want to give some attention the diaconate world, especially in the West is becoming powerful and upholding force in so many parishes and communities.
