About the Palazzo

Welcome to Palazzo San Pawl, a remarkable 17th-century edifice built by the illustrious Knights of Malta Meticulously restored by its dedicated owners, the building now radiates its original grandeur and timeless charm, with every detail thoughtfully preserved and enhanced.

Spanning the ground and first floors, you'll find four distinct apartmentsuites, each named in honor of a Grandmaster of the Knights of Malta. The Hompesch and del Monte Suites offer views of the tranquil central courtyard, while the Pinto and Vilhena Suites provide picturesque street vistas For your comfort, all bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning.

Nestled within Valletta's historic bastion walls, the property boasts a prime location just a stone's throw away from the Co-Cathedral of St John, home to the renowned masterpiece by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. The History Of Palazzo San Pawl

Perched in the heart of Valletta, a city carved by the hands of warriors and visionaries, Palazzo San Pawl stands as a testament to Malta's storied past Built in the 17th century during the golden age of the Knights of Malta, this palazzo was envisioned as a bastion of grandeur and a sanctuary for the noblest of knights. Its walls, crafted from the limestone quarried from Malta’s own soil, have absorbed the echoes of history, each stone a silent witness to the island's turbulent and triumphant epochs.

The story of Palazzo San Pawl begins with its foundation laid by a revered Knight of Malta, Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena, known for his valor and benevolence. Designed by famed architects of the time, the palazzo was built not only as a residence but as a symbol of the Order's enduring strength and commitment to the welfare of the Maltese islands Its strategic location was chosen for its proximity to the administrative heart of Valletta, allowing the knights quick access to the ruling chambers and the city’s fortifications.

Through the centuries, Palazzo San Pawl served various roles from a regal residence for knights in service, a silent keeper of secrets during wars, to a gathering place for plotting the defense of the archipelago. You will realise very quickly exactly why it has been used as a film-location for countless movies. The almost timeless authenticity makes you forget exactly "when" you are, which allows you to just enjoy the "now".

On a practical level, this smaller-scale big-city is super easy to walk around. You'll need to walk to really be able to take in all the nuances and details of the signature sandstone architecture. Around the corner from the apartment you'll find the nearest convenience store, but allow yourself to get lost into almost maze-like streets, and you'll discover ocean views, hidden churches, unique authentic restaurants and lots of traditional, colourful Maltese balconies.

Appliances & Electronics

AC

Your AC unit is equipped with both cooling and heating capabilities, allowing you to easily adjust the temperature to your liking, no matter the weather outside. Simply select the desired mode on the AC unit to switch between cooling and heating.

Energy Conservation: We kindly ask that you turn off the AC unit when leaving the apartment. This helps us conserve energy and maintain a more sustainable environment. Plus, it ensures that the apartment remains secure and energy-efficient while you're out exploring.

DEHUMIDIFIER

For the best results, it is recommended to leave your dehumidifier running continuously. This will help maintain a consistent level of humidity in your environment, preventing mold growth and ensuring a comfortable atmosphere.

Emptying the Water Tank:

The water tank will collect moisture from the air, and it needs to be emptied regularly. When the water tank is full, the dehumidifier will automatically shut off and indicate that the tank needs to be emptied. Carefully remove the tank from the unit, dispose of the water, and replace the tank properly to resume operation.

Whilst the tap water is perfectly safe for cooking, brushing your teeth and making coffee, the tap water in Malta has a slight chlorinated taste.

We recommend using bottled water for drinking.

Getting Around

BUS

Malta's bus network is extensive and offers an affordable way to get around.

The bus stops in Valletta connect you to various destinations across the island, including popular tourist spots, historical sites, and other towns.

The buses are affordable and operate regularly throughout the day.

TAXI

Taxis are the most convenient way to get around in Malta.

Our advice is to avoid white taxis and always use an app to book your taxi such as UBER, BOLT or eCabs.

CAR RENTAL

If you prefer to have your own transportation, you can rent a car in Sliema. This gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace and visit places that may be harder to reach by public transport.

Ratings & Reviews

Some Airbnbs really feel like a home away from home, and this is one of them. The bed is comfortable, the space is clean and nice, the kitchen has plenty of supplies. The location is amazing for walking to all of the best tourist sights and so, so many restaurants. Definitely recommend this flat and Christiano is a thoughtful host. Choose this one, you'll be glad you did.
