A Message of Thanks Each year, I am reminded that philanthropy involves purpose and, hence, meaning — and this past year has been no exception. I am deeply grateful for the generosity, partnership, and steadfast support our caregivers, donors, patients, community partners, and volunteers have shared with ChristianaCare and our Office of Philanthropy. As I reflect on the past year, I am moved by the unwavering commitment our community has shown to ChristianaCare. In a rapidly changing health care landscape, your partnership ensures we remain a beacon of hope and healing. Because of your generosity, we are not just providing care — we are redefining it. Your support has fueled transformational progress across our campuses, from investing in cutting-edge technology and supporting our frontline caregivers to expanding access in underserved communities and advancing health equity. These high-impact programs reflect the innovation and compassion that define ChristianaCare. As we look to the months ahead, my gratitude only deepens. Philanthropy is ultimately about connection, compassion, and our shared commitment to caring for one another. Your generosity continues to strengthen collaborations, expand our reach, and ignite hope for a brighter future. In the coming year, we are focused on expanding access to essential services and launching new initiatives that enhance the patient and family experience — work made possible because of you. We remain committed to acting with intention, transparency, and trust as we build on the foundation you have created. Thank you for believing in our mission and for being an essential part of our ChristianaCare family. With gratitude,
Dia Williams Adams, MPA, CAP® Vice President of Philanthropy

Transforming Health Through Growth and Vision Expanding Access Close to Home ChristianaCare is reaching farther and serving more communities, driving innovation in access expansion and building a stronger, more connected network of high-quality care.
ChristianaCare Health Center, Middletown
Delaware – New Castle County
ChristianaCare’s next major chapter in access expansion is unfolding in Middletown. On September 30, 2025, ChristianaCare broke ground on its new Health Center at Middletown, a milestone that signals a future of expanded, exceptional care for families across southern New Castle County and northern Kent County. The center is scheduled to open in spring 2027, bringing a modern model of convenient, close-to-home health care to one of Delaware’s most vibrant regions.
president of Ambulatory Network Continuity and Growth. “Every detail of this new center is aimed at making health care more welcoming, more connected, and more human.” ChristianaCare’s roots in Middletown go back more than a decade. The land was first acquired in 2009, and since then the freestanding emergency department has become a trusted community resource — with more than 32,000 visits last year alone. “[The Middletown Health Center is] more than a building, it represents our vision for healthier communities, our deep commitment to those we serve, and a future where every neighbor can thrive,” stated Janice E. Nevin, M.D., MPH, president and CEO of ChristianaCare.
Rising at 621 Middletown Odessa Road, the 87,000-square-foot facility will stand beside the existing freestanding emergency department, creating a connected campus of care built around ease and accessibility. Thoughtfully designed, the center will offer a wide range of services under one roof — primary and specialty care, women’s and behavioral health, oncology, cardiovascular care, pediatrics, neurology, imaging, lab testing, and diagnostics — reflecting ChristianaCare’s commitment to coordinated, whole-person care.
To play a role in the expansion of exceptional care in our community, make a meaningful gift at ChristianaCare.org/donate.
“We are designing care around people, not around appointments or buildings,” said Pauline Corso,

From Finish Line to Frontline Care Moving Cancer Research Forward A powerful community effort is shaping the future of cancer care at ChristianaCare. Thanks to the dedication of the Friends of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute, critical investments are advancing research, clinical programs and patient-centered care for individuals facing cancer across Delaware. The th Annual Friends 5K Run Walk was a tremendous success, drawing more than 900 participants — nearly double last year’s total — and raising over 307,000 to support bench-to-bedside cancer research. This approach accelerates the translation of discoveries from the laboratory into clinical trials, helping ensure patients benefit more quickly from new knowledge and innovative treatments. “Every step taken during the Friends 5K brings us closer to breakthroughs that can change lives,” said Thomas Schwaab, M.D., Ph.D., Bank of America Endowed Medical Director of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute. “These funds support vital research and inspire hope for patients and families navigating a cancer diagnosis.” The Friends’ annual 5K and other philanthropic efforts have raised more than 1.1 million since 2022, helping ChristianaCare strengthen its nationally recognized cancer research enterprise. The Helen F. Graham Cancer Center enrolls patients in National Cancer Institute clinical trials at seven times the national rate, giving individuals access to advanced therapies and expanded treatment options close to home. By championing research, collaboration and compassionate care, the Friends of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute are delivering meaningful progress — transforming community generosity into measurable impact for today’s patients and future generations.

A Legacy That Lives On Leia Heckman’s Story of Love, Faith, and Gilda’s Impact This is a story that was lived some time ago — but the fuller story behind that moment reveals a family shaped by love, faith, and the lasting impact of their first child, Gilda JoAnn.
Early in pregnancy, Leia and Jon Heckman learned their baby had anencephaly, a condition that meant she would not survive long after birth. In the shock of that day, they reached for purpose. Carrying their baby to term became their chosen path, rooted in love for the child they already knew as their own: Gilda. With Christiana Hospital’s Infant Maternal Pediatric Advanced Care Team (IMPACT) by their side, Leia and Jon prepared for a birthday filled with presence and meaning. The team helped them understand what to expect, coordinate care, and create space for memory-making — curating a special room, gathering resources, and weaving in details that would honor Gilda’s life. Family and friends gathered. Music played. Footprints, hand impressions, photos, and quiet moments were captured. Surrounded by those who loved her, Gilda lived her whole life in the most important place: the arms of her parents. In the months and years that followed, the Heckmans kept moving forward with the same purpose that guided their
the Heckmans
planning. Gilda’s milk was donated to help babies through the Ohio Milk Bank. Her tissue supported medical research, and one of her heart valves helped heal a little boy in California. In lieu of flowers, friends and family contributed more than 5,000 to strengthen the IMPACT team’s resources for other parents. Leia and Jon purchased and donated dozens of copies of Nancy Tillman’s On the Night You Were Born so more families could build memories of their own. A fall-blooming tree in their yard honors Gilda each year. The Loving Arms Parent Support Group at Christiana became a refuge, and the Heckmans’ visit to their Gilda’s leaf on Christiana campus’ memorial tree — a tradition of remembrance. Leia reflects, “Not a day goes by that we don’t think of Gilda” — an affirmation that grief and love can grow side by side.
as a speech-language and feeding therapist and lactation counselor. And at home, the family that Gilda first made has grown to include Jack, 8; Josey, 6; and Jonas, — each child a testament to the hope that followed heartbreak. et Gilda remains their first miracle, the girl whose brief life continues to open doors of kindness. ears have passed, but her legacy is alive in healthier babies, betterprepared caregivers, and the gentle strength shared between families. With compassionate perinatal support like IMPACT and the generosity of a caring community, stories like the Heckmans’ become more tenderly held proof that even the shortest lives can leave the longest light.
The ripple effects continue. Through support groups and online communities, Leia has walked alongside other parents facing similar decisions. Her calling deepened into her career today, she serves babies and families at Christiana Hospital
“These gifts that the perinatal palliative care team gave us are beyond measure. My husband and I believe wholeheartedly that without this team, there is no way we could have made Gilda’s big day anything even remotely close to as joyous as we were able to.” Leia Heckman

The Beat That Connects How philanthropy helps families parent through the toughest moments in the NICU en a a ily elco ed t in at t ee , t e care tea ne t e at o ld be ncertain One twin, baby Jeshua, lived for only a day. In the weeks that followed, his five-year-old sister carried a small stuffed bear that held a recording of his heartbeat. That soft, steady sound became a way to keep him present in daily life. It opened space for conversation. It gave her something loving to hold. It gave the whole family a way to remember.
A heartbeat bear is simple, yet deeply meaningful. And it is one clear way philanthropy is transforming the experience of families in ChristianaCare’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). With support raised by the Young Friends of ChristianaCare in 2025 for the Infant Maternal Pediatric Advanced Care Team (IMPACT), the NIC and Labor & Delivery teams have been able to place heartbeat bears and other concrete tools directly in the hands of parents. Families can record a baby’s heartbeat at the bedside or during a high-risk pregnancy. At times when families cannot be with their babies, the sound anchors connection. When grief is part of the journey, the heartbeat bear can be a compassionate keepsake that honors a child’s life and encourages speaking the baby’s name. “Our team is multidisciplinary by design to offer holistic care and support,” says Wendy J. Sturtz, MD, medical director of the IMPACT team. “We focus
on helping families love and parent their babies through the emotional complexities of critical care. That is where the healing happens.” Philanthropy is also fueling simple, powerful practices that restore a parent’s role, even on the most fragile days. One mother, Leia Heckman, began reading Nancy Tillman’s On the Night You Were Born to her daughter, Gilda, during pregnancy and again after birth. Today, Leia donates that same book to other families. The team introduces this special book at first meetings as a gentle way to begin bonding, to add footprints, to write notes, and to mark small milestones. Other books, purchased with oung Friends’ funding, are gifted throughout long stays to celebrate milestones, including the 100-day mark that many micro-preemies achieve. Each gift says you are parenting your baby, right now, with love.
showing promise, and the IMPACT team envisions making it available to all families in the NIC . In the future, recorded heartbeats could be woven into personalized legacy songs, offering another meaningful way to connect. Additional needs include continued funding for heartbeat bears and books, as well as memory-making tools like 3D keepsake molds that help families celebrate and remember. Behind each innovation is the same purpose to give parents practical, loving ways to show up for their babies and for one another. The impact reaches far beyond the hospital stay. It strengthens families in the moment, and it honors every story, every name, every heartbeat.
Looking ahead, philanthropy is opening new avenues of support. A music therapy pilot is already

Decades of Hope A Family’s Gratitude for Life-Changing Care For the DeMatteo family, gratitude was born during a moment of profound uncertainty — and sustained by exceptional care. In March 2025, Ryan DeMatteo, 2, was admitted to ChristianaCare with a severe case of influenza that led to acute respiratory failure. Complicating his illness was Ebstein’s anomaly, a rare congenital heart condition DeMatteo had been diagnosed with in his teens. While his condition had been carefully monitored for years, this hospitalization revealed that his heart valve was no longer functioning as it should. DeMatteo was cared for by the ChristianaCare team, who guided him through the most critical phase of his illness with skill and compassion. During this time, Dr. sman Choudhry, cardiac intensivist, played a pivotal role — closely monitoring DeMatteo’s condition and recognizing the need for specialized surgical evaluation.
“My son has been given a second lease on life — not a decade, but decades.” Florence DeMatteo Ryan’s mother
“Each day is a privilege to care for our patients, as I would my own family, and I’m grateful to be part of such a dedicated team,” shared Dr. Choudhry. With Dr. Choudhry’s guidance, DeMatteo was referred to Penn Medicine, where surgeons confirmed that his heart valve required repair. Surgery was performed soon after, and he recovered well, an outcome his family believes would not have been possible without the early insight and advocacy shown during his care at ChristianaCare. While DeMatteo’s surgery took place elsewhere, it was the empathy, reassurance, and attention to detail he and his family experienced at ChristianaCare that left the deepest impression. The family also expressed heartfelt appreciation for the exceptional nursing care DeMatteo received on 3E in the Medical Intensive Care nit, where they felt supported every step of the way. In March 2026, DeMatteo and his family returned — not as patients, but as a grateful family — to personally thank Dr. Choudhry and the care team. In honor of that care, they made a 10,000 gift to the Center for Heart & Vascular Care. For the DeMatteo family, giving back is a way of saying thank you — for lifesaving care, for compassion during a frightening time, and for a future made possible.

A Boutique Model of Care Building the Future of Memory Health Together In the rapidly evolving field of memory care, ChristianaCare’s Swank Center for Memory Care is stepping into a transformative new era – one shaped by breakthrough therapies, new diagnostic possibilities, and the growing realization that compassionate, comprehensive support for both patients and caregivers must stand at the center of care. According to Steven Huege, M.D., MSEd, The Swank Foundation Endowed Chair of the Swank Center for Memory Care, this progress is not only long overdue but also being made possible through the power of philanthropy. For nearly two decades, memory care saw little change. “From when gr u te ello s i in 2007 to ne rl 20 e rs l ter, not mu s nge in -tor ti e, Dr. Huege shared. While other areas of medicine advanced rapidly, dementia care remained limited in both tools and treatments. “It felt a little bit like practicing medicine 100 e rs go, su ortive, gui ing, but without the ability to modify disease in any meaningful way.” That reality has shifted dramatically in recent years. New disease modifying therapies improved diagnostic tools, earlier detection methods, and enhanced genetic insights have opened a doorway to hope, “a little bit of light coming in,” as Dr. Huege describes it. Swank clinicians are now evolving from a narrow diagnostic role into a
true disease management model, supported by a team of dedicated memory care specialists trained through an innovative Advanced r ti e lini i n ello s i program. But with new capabilities come new complexities and new infrastructure needs. This is where philanthropy becomes a catalyst for change. “Philanthropy allows us to do things that don’t fit within the traditional health care model,” Dr. Huege explains. Models like these—therapeutic, social, and deeply meaningful to patients and caregivers—are not traditionally funded by health systems. Yet they o er ro oun ene its onne tion, joy, stimulation, and relief from isolation. “It’s not a clinical intervention in the traditional sense, but it can help people in ways that matter deeply.” Philanthropy enables caregiver education, support groups, pill organizers, and practical needs that fall outside insurance covered care but make all the difference in daily life.
“We want to provide that level of comprehensive, specialized care to the people of Delaware and beyond,” Dr. Huege says. At its heart, this work is about restoring dignity, meaning, and hope. Early diagnosis, family education, caregiver support, prevention programs, and therapeutic models that uplift both patients and loved ones — these are the innovations redefining memory care today. And philanthropy is the engine behind them. As Dr. Huege shared, the community is ready for a “passion project,” a win that energizes donors and showcases what is possible when compassion meets innovation. Non-tr ition l e lt re mo els, prevention research, and caregiver supports all represent opportunities for donors to change the future of memory care in Delaware. Because while dementia has no cure, there is something profoundly o er ul e n o er etter s, fuller lives, and care that honors the humanity at the center of every memory.
“The caregiver is as much our patient as the person with memory loss — philanthropy makes it possible to support both.” Dr. Huege

Junior Board Advances Next-Generation Care with $1 Million Investment For more than a century, the Junior Board of ChristianaCare has embodied generosity in motion, steadfastly supporting programs, services, and innovations that uplift the health and well-being of our neighbors. This year, their tradition of compassion takes a remarkable new step forward it a illion lead gi t to ort t e e an ion of ChristianaCare’s Middletown Campus — one of the fastest-growing communities in Delaware. Set to unfold over several phases that began in 2025, the Middletown expansion will create a destination ambulatory health and wellness campus designed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing and diverse population. The project will bring expanded access to primary care, behavioral health, cancer care, heart and vascular services, pediatrics, imaging and lab services, neurology, women’s health, surgical services, and more, all close to home. The Junior Board’s transformational gift will specifically support innovative digital technologies that elevate the patient experience and improve care coordination. Among these enhancements are interactive, TV-based patient whiteboards — tools that empower patients to better understand their care plans, access educational resources, view exam results, and even connect virtually with care team members and loved ones. These technologies help patients become active partners in their care while enabling caregivers to deliver more seamless, efficient, and compassionate support.
“This expansion is more than bricks and mortar. It is a promise — to bring outstanding, equitable, communitycentered care closer to home for Middletown families.”

When Caregivers Give, Care Grows CaringPartners brings caregivers together to strengthen ChristianaCare — continuing a legacy of service through shared generosity. CaringPartners continues to be a meaningful way for colleagues to support one another and strengthen our shared commitment to the community. Recently, teammates and friends came together to raise funds through CaringPartners in honor of two longtime ChristianaCare colleagues, demonstrating how these moments of recognition can also create lasting impact. The outpouring of support coincided with the retirement of Robin Maguire, MSN, APRN, NNP-BC, manager of the neonatal advanced practice clinicians, and Susan Perna, MS, BSN, RN, CPHRM, vice president of risk management and former Neurosurgery nurse, who both concluded more than 0 years of service at the close of 2025. Funds raised in their honor reflect the deep respect shared among peers and the power of CaringPartners as a way to give back — supporting colleagues in need while honoring the values that unite us.
