ChristianaCare Receives $1 Million Donation from the Rocco A. and Mary Abessinio Foundation

Wilmington Hospital has received a transformational $1,000,000 gift from The Rocco A. and Mary Abessinio Foundation, Inc. to support the hospital’s areas of greatest need including the expansion of patient care initiatives at the Rocco A. Abessinio Family Health Center, which is home to three primary care practices offering high quality health care, wellness and preventive health visits for people of all ages, regardless of their income or ability to pay.

“As a result of the Abessinio family’s longstanding partnership and investment in our mission of service, we are making significant progress in addressing disparities and building strong and healthy communities,”

said LeRoi S. Hicks, MD, MPH, FACP, President of ChristianaCare’s Wilmington Hospital.

Gerret and Tatiana

Copeland’s Gift Advances Early Detection

Early detection of breast cancer — before symptoms appear — significantly improves survival rates, often allowing for less aggressive treatment and better outcomes. Recognizing this critical priority, philanthropists Gerret and Tatiana Copeland have funded a state-of-the-art universal mammography system at ChristianaCare that delivers faster, more accurate screenings.

The Copelands’ commitment to breast health is deeply personal. Tatiana is a breast cancer survivor who was treated at ChristianaCare. Inspired by her experience, the Copelands committed to supporting the best in breast care, diagnosis and treatment. Among their many gifts were two 3-D mammography units in 2016, which made ChristianaCare one of the first health systems to offer the technology nearly a decade ago. More recently, the health system named its breast center the Tatiana Copeland Breast Center at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute to honor her dedicated support.

Now, the couple’s latest contribution is setting a new standard for breast care in Delaware, which has a rate of breast cancer higher than the national average. The cutting-edge system features advanced 3D imaging that enhances early detection, reduces false positives, minimizes missed diagnoses, and accelerates results for earlier intervention.

“This technology offers more than better images,” said Dr. Vinay Gheyi, Chair of the ChristianaCare Department of Radiology. “It transforms how we deliver care by improving access, enhancing efficiency — all with the mission of providing a better patient experience and outcomes.”

The system seamlessly integrates imaging, genetic data, and family history into patients’ electronic medical records. Having all patient information on one platform enables a personalized, risk-based approach to diagnosis and treatment and fosters collaboration among medical teams.

“I believe the Universal Mammography System presents a significant opportunity to enhance early detection for more women,” Tatiana said.

“This incredible new technology will expand access to life-saving screenings, and ensure that more patients will be given a better chance to survive breast cancer through early diagnosis. I am especially glad that my husband and I were able to do this in honor of Dr. Petrelli before he retired”.

Gheyi added that the Copelands' gift exemplifies how philanthropy can drive ChristianaCare’s values of love and excellence: “The Copelands are extraordinary partners in our neighbors’ health and well-being. They have been steadfast in helping us advance early breast cancer detection to save the lives of the people we serve.”

Retirement Celebration for Dr. Nicholas Petrelli

In September, hundreds of community members, donors, and ChristianaCare employees gathered to honor Dr. Nicholas Petrelli’s impressive 23-year legacy of transformational leadership as the Bank of America Medical Director of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute and celebrate his numerous achievements as he embarks on a new chapter within the health system.

Since joining ChristianaCare in 2001, Dr. Petrelli has helped transform cancer care in Delaware and the region. Some of the most notable accomplishments of the cancer program, include his creation of a national model for multidisciplinary cancer care. That means our patients can see a surgeon, a medical oncologist, and a radiation oncologist all in one visit without having to make multiple trips, which can be especially exhausting for someone undergoing cancer treatment.

Under his leadership, the Graham Cancer Center was selected as a National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program. The Center is now a top enroller in U.S. clinical research trials and the Graham Cancer Center is one of only five hybrid academic community cancer centers in the nation.

Over a two-year period, the Office of Philanthropy helped raise over $2.5 million from the community in honor of Dr. Petrelli for various cancer center initiatives and was pleased to announce that ChristianaCare has named the Multidisciplinary Center in his honor.

Dr. Petrelli will continue his work at ChristianaCare as the Director of Translational Cancer Research of the Cawley Center of Translational Cancer Research.

Agnes Judge’s Journey of Resilience and Hope

Agnes Judge knows what it means to fight.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019, Agnes underwent a double mastectomy and then experienced a deep depression. “I went into a dark place,” she shared. But through her faith and daily prayers, she found the strength to rise again — this time, with a purpose: to inspire and bring relief to cancer patients nationwide.

Since June 2023, Agnes has traveled to all 50 states, visiting leading cancer centers in each locale. At every stop, she shares her story of survival and resilience. She has also donated to the cancer centers to support cancer care, prevention, and treatment.

Her journey has been anything but ordinary. Agnes meticulously researched each state’s top cancer centers, making hundreds of calls and setting up visits. During her travels, she met caregivers, patients, researchers, and others who inspired her to keep going.

“I’ve learned that I’m not alone,” she reflected. “Cancer can be a diagnosis, not a death sentence. I’ve seen other patients hold on and fight. It takes determination — the will to get up and keep going — along with treatments and support. And there is a strong community of people to bolster us – I hope I am one of these people.”

In 2024, Agnes visited ChristianaCare’s Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute. Her gift to the center helps support wellness programs and financial counseling for patients. “Bills don’t stop when you’re battling cancer,” she said. “Healing the mind and spirit is as important as healing the body, whether through yoga and mindfulness or financial assistance.”

Agnes’s family and friends call her “Angel,” a fitting name for someone who has touched many lives. But Agnes sees herself differently. “I’m not an angel,” she said. “I’m just someone who knows what it means to fight and wants others to know they can fight, too.”

Judge’s last stop, in Vermont, marked the end of the first phase of her mission. Next, she plans to visit cancer centers in Puerto Rico and the other U.S. territories. With every mile she travels and every story she shares, Agnes proves that even in the most challenging battles, hope, resilience—and sometimes an Angel—can light the way forward.

Delaware Subaru Drives Healthy Outcomes for Newborns at Women’s and Children’s Health

Aspart of its annual Share the Love® event, Delaware Subaru generously donates $250 from the sale of each new Subaru during the months of November – February to various local nonprofits. For the past 10 years, Delaware Subaru has supported various initiatives at ChristianaCare— from special events and the construction of the new Center for Women’s and Children’s Health to meeting the special needs of families receiving care in the NICU—and this year was no exception.

Several members of the Delaware Subaru’s leadership team, Lee Asher, general manager and Greg Ritter, service director recently visited the Newark Campus to present a generous donation of $9,000 in proceeds from the dealership’s Fall 2023 Share the Love® event, which will continue to support patient care and equipment purchases in the NICU.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Delaware Subaru for their inspiring philanthropic leadership. As a result of Delaware Subaru’s longstanding partnership and investment in ChristianaCare’s mission, together we are driving health outcomes that ensure babies thrive and can leave the hospital and join their family at home as soon as possible,” said Dia Williams Adams, MPA, vice president of philanthropy at ChristianaCare.

”It is especially meaningful to us to provide support this year. It is critically important to our community’s well-being to have a world class Women’s and Children’s health program. We hope our support of ChristianaCare over the years benefits all our citizens in the region,” said Michael Uffner, president, chairman and CEO at Delaware Subaru and Auto Team Delaware.

Junior Board of ChristianaCare

In July, the Junior Board of ChristianaCare elected its new slate of officers:

• Kaye Crouch/Diane Thomas, Co-Presidents (a first)

• Connie Euston, Treasurer

• Kaye Crouch, Assistant Treasurer

• Carol Gallagher, Recording Secretary

• JoAnn Vahey, Administrative Secretary

• Claudine Richardson, VP External Affairs

• Lori Wright, VP Hospital Services

• Ellen Schonbach, Hours and Provisionals

• Linda White, Membership

• Tina Furman, VP Ways and Means and Provisionals

The Junior Board has supported multiple initiatives this past year all designed with the express purpose of advancing ChristianaCare’s mission to deliver high-quality health care with love and excellence. Projects they have recently supported include:

Needle trainer for the VEST Center, which enables clinical providers to test their acumen prior to treating patients - $85,000 investment.

The I-LEAD Garden at Christiana’s Newark Campus - $23,500 investment and the Culinary Education Project at PMRI - $6,500 investment. Dr. Mason, a well-being specialist, and Denise Taylor, a nutritionist, harvested and distributed over 1,000 pounds of food this summer and fall for those ChristianaCare patients and families identified with food insecurity. The Junior Board granted funds to expand their program with a greenhouse for growing seeds and expanding the growing season as well as a gazebo for respite/lecture space. Dr. Fritzges, a primary care provider, requested funds to update the kitchen at PMRI and offer workshops for her culinary education program. All three “foodies” cross over their passion as Dr. Fritzges offers workshops at the I-LEAD Garden and they all presented a Grand Rounds lecture on September 5th to enthusiastic medical attendees at the Ammon Center.

Special thanks to all members of the Junior Board for their exemplary commitment to service each year guiding volunteers, overseeing our gift shops and offering financial support to ChristianaCare!

Council of Advisors Annual Fall Meeting

In addition to serving as community ambassadors and receiving important system updates, the ChristianaCare Council of Advisors honored two change agents for their service and leadership in building a system of care that is effective, affordable and valuable to everyone touched by it.

LeRoi Hicks, M.D., MPH, FACP, received the 2024 Charles J. Harrington Award for Distinguished Service to ChristianaCare. The Harrington Award was introduced in 1996, honoring its namesake, the late director emeritus of the ChristianaCare Board of Directors and former advisor. Harrington was a dedicated advocate for service and a strong believer in the importance of philanthropy.

The award honors visionary leaders dedicated to philanthropy and advocacy. Hicks, the campus president for ChristianaCare, Wilmington campus, is a “community pillar” who is “well-known in Wilmington as a clinician focused on healing, equity and transformation,” said Janice Nevin, M.D., MPH, president and CEO of ChristianaCare, in presenting the award.

Christine Sauers, who has served as a member of ChristianaCare’s Health Services Board of Directors since 2021 and the Council of Advisors since 2016, received the 2024 Carroll M. Carpenter Impact Award. The Carpenter Award was established in 2016 to recognize a member of the Council of Advisors who demonstrates leadership, selflessness, service, action and impact.

Salesianum Student Council

Special thanks to the Student Council from Salesianum School in Wilmington. In October they held a “pink out” dress down day and sold pink shirts to raise awareness for those diagnosed with cancer. The students raised over $5,000, which will provide blankets, beanies, and snacks for cancer patients as they are undergoing their treatments at the center in addition to supporting patient care, hospitality, and education.

Breast Cancer Programming

The volleyball teams at Christ the Teacher Catholic School held a Breast Cancer Awareness in October and raised $2,016!

Friends of Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute

On Sept. 29, more than 500 runners and walkers laced up and got moving for the 3rd annual Friends of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute 5K Run/Walk at ChristianaCare’s Newark campus.

Sporting bright tulle tutus, pink race shirts, fanciful streamers and pom-poms, the record number of registered participants raised more than $170,000, exceeding the race goal of $150,000. Proceeds will help cancer patients who struggle with food insecurity. ChristianaCare’s Community Health Outreach and Education and Cancer Care Management teams actively work to address nutrition security with programs that assist patients in accessing fresh produce and making healthy food choices. For the past two years, the Friends 5K race has raised funds for medical equipment to improve patient care. This year, they aimed to raise funds to further enhance the patient experience.

“Access to fresh produce and healthy food options is vital for everyone, but especially for patients undergoing cancer treatment,” said Dennis Voorheis, chair of the Friends of Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute.

“We wanted to align our fundraising efforts with the excellent work being done at the Graham Cancer Center to support their efforts in providing valuable assistance to those in need.”

The Graham Cancer Center is committed to tackling food insecurity through various community-based educational programs.

These programs include the Patient’s Farmer’s Market, which emphasizes the significance of nutrition for cancer patients and educates them about the challenges associated with a cancer diagnosis.

“We want to enhance our programs by providing customized meals and food-purchase gift cards, and by partnering with existing community resources and local food banks,” said Nora Katurakes, MSN, RN, OCN, manager of the Graham Cancer Center’s Community Outreach & Education program.

“This is exciting work that can improve treatment outcomes, alleviate the burden on cancer patients and their families, and provide valuable nutrition education that can make a difference.

The 2025 Friends Co-chairs presented a check from the race proceeds to the Cancer Center team.

The Planned Giving Society

Planned gifts create extraordinary opportunities to advance health care and leave a legacy of support for initiatives that will have an impact for years to come.

The 1888 Society is named in honor of the philanthropic tradition that began well over a century ago by J. Taylor Gause, who helped establish the Homeopathic Hospital in Wilmington. His vision in 1888 led to what is today one of the region’s leading health care systems.

We are grateful for these visionary individuals who have chosen to support ChristianaCare through financial and estate planning.
