THE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM 2024 The Christian College Geelong Instrumental Music program aims to provide students with a practical and enjoyable enhancement of the classroom music program and an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge as performing musicians. It is hoped that this program will enable students to develop a continuing enjoyment and appreciation of music and the arts. Choosing to learn to play an instrument can lead to improved academic outcomes across the curriculum as well as improved wellbeing. Please visit the following site if you are interested in learning more about how playing an instrument/singing can enhance a student’s life and learning. http://time.com/3634995/study-kids-engaged-music-class-for-benefits-northwestern/ The College Concert Band, Choral and String programs provide opportunities for students to be involved in regular group music making. Students studying an instrument may have the opportunity to be invited to join instrumental ensembles for weekly rehearsals and College performances. Where appropriate, students are encouraged to prepare for examinations with the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) and Australian and New Zealand Cultural Arts Limited (ANZCA). Teachers will give details of these requirements well in advance, together with a note of the prescribed fees and arrangements for accompanists (as required). Learning to play an instrument can also lead to the study of VCE Music, provide performance opportunities for students or even lead to a career in music or a related industry. Beginners and advanced students across all year levels are encouraged to study an instrument at the College.

Parents will receive the Music Tutor’s telephone number/email prior to the first lesson. Music lesson times are scheduled weekly in advance and issued to music students. It is the responsibility of parents to contact the Tutor directly, and as early as possible, prior to an absence (which could be due to conflict of the music lesson with appointments, school excursions etc) to facilitate lesson scheduling and avoid unnecessary absence. •

If the student is ill on the morning of a lesson, the instrumental teacher should be contacted in addition to the student office/homeroom teacher.

If possible, students will be scheduled a make-up lesson - make-up lessons cannot be guaranteed as many of our specialist instrumental teachers attend a particular campus only one day a week.

Refunds will not be given for student absences (including family holidays) except in the case of attending the Year 9 Rural Studies Program at ‘Back Creek’.

When a lesson is missed due to tutor absence they will receive either a make-up lesson or a credit/refund will be given at the end of the academic year.

Instruments A limited number of instruments are available for hire from the College at $95.31 per term for a maximum period of one school year. When an instrument is made available, parents are responsible for any loss or damage. In no circumstances should parents attempt to repair/rectify any damage. Christian College does not hire out the following instruments; drum kits, pianos, keyboards, acoustic guitars and electric guitars (except bass guitars). Families are generally expected to purchase their own instruments. Advice on the type of instrument (brand name etc.) should be sought by contacting either the Director of Music, Mrs. Fiona Gardner (email f.gardner @ccg.vic.edu.au) or Director of Instrumental Music, Mr. Andrew Dunlop (email a.dunlop@ccg.vic.edu.au) before purchasing. After instrumental students have reached a certain standard on their instrument they will be invited to play in College Ensembles. Participation in the ensemble program is a rewarding and enriching experience providing students opportunities to develop musicianship, team working skills, leadership and participate in a broad range of cocurricular activities such as camps, tours, festivals and workshops. To assist us to provide a place with an instrumental tutor for your student, please complete the Instrumental Music form located on this webpage under ‘Forms’.

INTERESTED IN BECOMING A PARENT VOLUNTEER? Our College community relies upon the skills that each volunteer can provide. Staff at each campus will communicate the different opportunities open to parent/guardian volunteers, such as excursions, camps and other events. As your child commences their studies here at Christian College, it is important that the College policies are known by all volunteers. The main policies which impact on a volunteer are: •

Occupational Health and Safety

Working with Children

Duty of Care

Christian College is committed to providing a safe environment for all students, staff and all other people who come into contact with us. All volunteers will be required to sign a Volunteer’s Agreement which clearly details Christian College’s expectations to provide a safe workplace and expectations of how we meet our Duty of Care obligations. It is now legislated that all people who attend the school with the intention of working with the students, must have a ‘Working with Children’ Card – the previously acceptable ‘Police check’ is no longer valid. There are only two exemptions to the requirement to hold a Working with Children Card: •

Teachers registered with Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)

Police Officers

In both of these cases the teacher or police officer needs to provide Christian College with their registration number and its expiry date (if applicable) for us to record. To obtain a Working with Children Card (WWC) you need to complete an application form, nominating Christian College as a place where you will need your WWC (forms are available at most Post Offices and online). The application form outlines all of the requirements that must be met. The nearest designated post office to the Senior, Middle and Junior Schools is the Belmont Post Office and the nearest one to the Bellarine Campus is the Drysdale Post Office. For all volunteers there is no charge for the application. All WWC Card applications can be lodged at any Post Office. Once your application has been accepted you will receive an application receipt which will enable you to start working with children immediately. Sometime later you will receive a WWC card. As soon as you receive your receipt, you must present it for sighting at Christian College, so that the number and the expiry date of your card can be recorded. If you already have a WWC but Christian College is not a nominated organisation linked to your card, then you need to log onto http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/wwccu/mycheck.doj to update your information. Once updated, print the form and present it to Christian College. Until this information is provided you will not be able to work as a volunteer. Please note that the WWC legislation also requires you, as the cardholder, to carry the card at all times when working with children and to advise Christian College of any changed circumstances which may affect your eligibility for the card. We thank you in anticipation for your support of our educational programme.

CAMPS, SPORTS AND EXCURSIONS FUND Financial Assistance Information for Parents Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and Government’s commitment to breaking the link between a student’s background and their outcomes.

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum. CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The annual CSEF amount per student is: •

$125 for primary school students
