Liebe Freunde der guten Fotografie, Sie halten die neueste Ausgabe von Christa Kluberts ‚International Photographers Magazine‘ in den Händen. Zum ersten Mal haben wir den Inhalt von ‚Photographers‘ unter ein übergeordnetes Motto gestellt: Identity. Mehr denn je können wir heute selbst entscheiden wer wir sein möchten. Die Spielmöglichkeiten scheinen schier unendlich. Entsprechend facettenreich haben unsere Fotografen das Wort interpretiert. Julia Fullerton-Batten beispielsweise zeigt Teenagermädchen, die ihre Identity noch nicht gefunden haben und ihre Unsicherheit hinter Tierköpfen verbergen. Pim Vuik, der seit 20 Jahren Landschaften fotografiert, inszeniert eine Welt der Gegensätze in Hong Kong. Andy Green lässt in seiner Zukunftsvision die Identity des Individuums hinter Schutzanzügen verschwinden. Auch der Identity unserer Fotografen selbst sind wir in dieser Ausgabe auf der Spur. Weil Worte manchmal doch mehr sagen als zwei, drei Bilder haben Gepa Hinrichsen und Moritz Kuhn mit einigen von ihnen Interviews geführt. Und nicht zuletzt zeigen wir hier die Identity von Christa Klubert: Eine handverlesene Auswahl von Fotografen, die uns wirklich begeistern und für die wir uns mit Leidenschaft einsetzen.Viel Spaß mit Christa Kluberts Pictures und Conversations zu Identity.

Dear friends of good photography, You are holding in your hands the latest issue of Christa Klubert‘s ‘International Photographers Magazine’. For the first time ever, we have put the content of ‘Photographers’ under a greater theme: Identity.

In this day and age, we are freer than ever to decide who we’d like to be. The opportunities we have to play with appear infinite. Our photographers have therefore interpreted the word in an accordingly diverse manner. Julia Fullerton-Batten, for instance, portrays teenage girls who have not yet found their identity and hide their insecurities behind animal masks. Pim Vuik, who has been photographing landscapes for 20 years, creates a world of contrast in Hong Kong. And in his own vision of the future, Andy Green makes the individual’s identity disappear beneath protective suits. For this issue, we have also been looking into our photographers’ identities. As words do sometimes speak louder than two or three images, Gepa Hinrichsen and Moritz Kuhn have interviewed a number of them. On top of this, we’d like to show you Christa Klubert’s identity: a carefully selected choice of photographers who enthuse us and who we champion with a passion. TIM SIMMONS Tim Simmons ist groß. Er inszeniert Landschaften wie sensationelle Still Lifes. Zu seinen Lieblings-Props gehören Abenddämmerung und Nacht, die er mit erbarmungslosem Scheinwerferlicht an den Rand seiner Bilder drängt. Im Mittelpunkt steht Schönheit, die ohne Makel ist. Tim Simmons is epic. He stages landscapes like sensational still lifes. His favourite props include dusk and the night which he forces to the edge of his images through merciless floodlight. The focus hereby lies on immaculate beauty. Streets, stones, trees seem to have been composed by a Zen gardener worthy of worship. JOHANNES MINK Faszination für Land und Leute haben Johannes Mink dazu veranlasst, nach Island zu reisen, um sich dem Thema Identity anzunähern. Dort hat sich Johannes mit einem jungen isländischen Musiker getroffen, der ihm seine Lieblingsorte zeigte. Herausgekommen sind sehr persönliche Aufnahmen, die einen starken Eindruck von der Verbundenheit des Musikers mit seiner Heimat vermitteln.

The fascination for the country and its people has prompted Johannes Mink to travel to Iceland to approach the topic Identity. Johannes met with a young Icelandic musician who showed him his favourite places. The results are very personal images which communicate a strong impression of the musician‘s bond with his home country.

NADINE ELFENBEIN Nadines Bilder sind direkt. Oft bunt, wild und voller Leben. Vor allem aber authentisch. Ihr natürliches Portrait einer sich inszenierenden Lifestyle- und Musikszene sind Dokumente der zeitgenössischen Jugendkultur. Dank ihrer Neugierde und Sensibilität trifft Nadine dabei stets das Wesen ihrer Protagonisten.

Nadine‘s images are direct. Often colourful, wild and full of life. Above all, however, they are authentic. Her natural portrait of a lifestyle and music scene that is setting itself in scene is a document of contemporary youth culture. JULIA FULLERTON-BATTEN Julia Fullerton-Batten ist der Inbegriff für preisgekrönte Fotografie. Eines der zentralen Themen, welches sie in ihrer Vielgestaltigkeit konsequent umsetzt, sind Jugendliche. Die Arbeiten für das Magazin zeigen die innere Konfliktsituation zwischen Angst und Unsicherheit von erwachsen werdenden Mädchen, die ihre Gesichter hinter Tierköpfen verbergen.

Julia Fullerton-Batten is the epitome of award-winning photography. One of the main topics which she consistently realises in her versatility is that of youth. The work for the magazine shows the internal conflict between the angst and insecurity of girls growing up, hiding their faces behind animal heads.

GREGOR HOHENBERG Gregor Hohenberg, Modefotograf aus Berlin und ehemaliger Herausgeber der Zeitschrift ‚Achtung, Zeitschrift für Mode‘, sucht in seinen Bildern das Erstaunliche in der Banalität des Alltags.

Neben seinem ästhetischen Anspruch stellen Gregors Bilder dem Betrachter Fragen über die Entfaltung einer noch nicht zu Ende erzählten Geschichte. Gregors Auffassung einer deutschen Kultur verbirgt sich dabei hinter dem unmittelbar Wahrnehmbaren.

Gregor Hohenberg, a fashion photographer from Berlin and former editor of the magazine ‘Achtung, Zeitschrift für Mode’, seeks to portray in his images the astonishing in the mundanity of everyday life.

Apart from the high aesthetic standards, Gregor‘s images pose the viewer questions about the unfolding of a story that has not yet fully been told. In this, Gregor‘s perception of German culture is hidden beneath what is immediately noticeable.

PIM VUIK Pim Vuik, renommierter Fotograf aus Amsterdam, ist ein Reisender. Seit über 20 Jahren fotografiert er Landschaft und Architektur auf der ganzen Welt. Als Tourist hat er sich dabei noch nie betrachtet, Heimweh ist ihm fremd. Die Redensart ‚well travelled, well experienced‘ ist zutreffend. Pims Portfolio zieht uns in faszinierende Welten, sei es magische Natur oder historischurbane Architektur. Mit seinen Arbeiten für das Magazin möchte Pim die Suche nach Identität zum Ausdruck bringen. Er gibt keine Antworten, er stellt Fragen: Wie manifestiert sich Identität innerhalb verschiedener Gesellschaftsschichten? Welche Koordinaten hat ein Individuum, um seine Identität im sozialen Umfeld zu behaupten? Welche Entscheidungsmöglichkeiten ergeben sich, wenn man selbst nicht bestimmen kann, wie man leben will, aber ständig mit dem Anblick eines besseren Lebens konfrontiert wird?

Pim Vuik, the renowned photographer from Amsterdam, is a traveller. He‘s been taking photographs of landscape amd architecture all over the world for more than 20 years. He has never looked upon himself as a tourist and homesickness is an alien concept to him. The old saying ‘well travelled, well experienced’ is very appropriate to this man. Pim‘s portfolio draws us into fascinating worlds, be it magical nature or historic urban architecture. With his work for the magazine, Pim aims at expressing the search for identity. He does not offer any answers, he purely asks questions: How does identity manifest itself amongst different social classes? Which coordinates does the individual have at their disposal in order to retain their own identity in their social surroundings? What decision options arise when you can‘t determine how to live your own life but are constantly presented with the sight of a better life?

SANDER FOEDERER Sander Foederer macht Aufnahmen, die ganze Filme erzählen. Mit seinem Faible für cineatische Momente und mysteriöse Hintergründe schafft er es, eine Spannung aufzubauen, wie man sie sonst nur aus Thrillern kennt. Obwohl der Abschluss an der holländischen ‚Fotoacademy Amsterdam‘ für Sander gerade mal vier Jahre zurück liegt, schöpfen seine Arbeiten bereits aus einem scheinbar unendlichen Repertoire an Zitaten.

Sander Foederer takes pictures that tell the story of a whole film. With his penchant for cinematic moments and mysterious settings he manages to build up the suspense one only knows from thrillers.

Bo Hylén’s photography is of a grand scale. The shots of Los Angeles at night are so precise and pin sharp that the viewer needs to take time to detect every single detail. AERNOUT OVERBEEKE Identität ist Dasein. Die Suche danach permanent. Der Niederländer Aernout Overbeeke wird zu Recht als klassischer Meister der Fotografie bezeichnet. Sein Stil und seine Künste sind unverfälscht. Einzigartig ist die im Magazin zu sehende Ausstellungsarbeit über das Leben der afrikanischen Massai. Kulturelle Identität ist ein zentrales, vielfältig interpretiertes Thema seiner Werke. Selbstfindung begreift Aernout als einen spirituellen Vorgang, ein bewusstes Loslassen ohne Angst vor dem Urteil anderer.

Identity is being, the search for it is permanent. Dutchman Aernout Overbeeke is described as a classic master of photography. Rightly so! His style and his art are pure. His exhibition work on the life of the African Massai shown in the magazine is unique. Cultural identity is a central and diversely interpreted theme of his work. Aernout sees self-discovery as a spiritual process, a conscious disengagement without fear from the judgement of others.

Der Titel seiner Arbeit „Thank you for being who you are!“ weckt sofort Assoziationen zu den tröstend authentischen Geschichten der Schriftstellerin Miranda July. Das Anliegen hinter Jons Fotos ist so simpel wie einleuchtend: In Zeiten, in denen die individuelle Identität missbilligt wird, möchte Jon Persönlichkeiten ins Licht rücken, die sich selbst und ihren Idealen treu geblieben sind. Menschen, die laut Jon eine Bereicherung für ihre Mitmenschen sind und dadurch andere inspirieren. Die Aufforderung an den Betrachter hierbei lautet: „Stehe zu dem, was du tust und sei stolz auf dich!“ Jon Mortimer relocated to Berlin from London at the beginning of the year. Auch bezüglich der von Andy eingereichten Arbeiten tappt der Betrachter zunächst amüsiert im Dunklen. Was machen die Astronauten im Schwimmbad, auf der Schaukel und im Restaurant? Die Antwort hat einen ernsthaften Hintergrund. In Australien beobachtete Andy Kinder, die am Strand spielten und dabei Ganzkörperanzüge trugen, um sich gegen die Sonne zu schützen. Mit dem ‚Silverman Project‘ entwirft Andy Green das Zukunftsszenario einer Welt, in der Klimawandel und Umweltzerstörung unser Leben beeinträchtigen.

Any attempt to thematically categorise Andy Green will inevitably fail. The Englishman, who in his own words is ‘still occupied with growing up’, likes to keep his identity concealed. And when it comes to the work presented by Andy, the viewer will – at first a little amused – be in the dark, too. What are the astronauts doing in the pool, on the swings and in the restaurant? The answer has a serious background. Whilst in Australia, Andy spotted children playing at the beach in full-body suits to protect themselves against the sun. With the ‘Silverman Project’, Andy Green creates a futuristic scenario of a world in which climate change and environmental damage have a negative impact on our lives.

TOM MENNEMANN Würde man bei Fotografen den Debütant des Jahres 2008 küren, hätte Tom Mennemann gute Chancen auf den Titel. Zahlreiche Shootings, darunter mehrere für VW, eins für Mercedes und eine preisverdächtige Kampagne für BMW. Sein Geheimnis ist so simpel wie frustrierend für die Konkurrenz: Ob auf Doppelseite, im Hochformat, Natur oder Stadt, Tom Mennemann sieht immer gut aus. Sein Auftritt ist den Anlässen entsprechend stilsicher, das Selbstbewusstsein, mit dem er sich auf dem aalglatten Parkett der Autobauer bewegt, beneidenswert – wenn auch nicht unerklärlich. Tom Mennemann hatte großartige Lehrmeister. Ein weiterer Pluspunkt: Noch sind die Plätze auf seiner Tanzkarte erschwinglich.

Eine Norm existiert weder für ihn noch für seine Fotografie. Das ist vermutlich seiner Rastlosigkeit zu verdanken, durch die er einen perfekten Ausgleich zwischen Aufträgen und persönlichen Projekten schafft. Inspiriert durch das Thema Regionale Identität führt ihn seine Reise von den Schrebergärten Düsseldorfs über die Schweizer Alpen hinunter ins holländische Camperparadies.

Mathias has developed a strong reputation since the very beginning of his work. He is never fed up or bored with whatever comes his way. The norm does not exist for him or his photography. This might be the sign of a restless soul who creates a perfect balance between his time spent on commissions and working on personal projects. The theme of regional identity made him travel from Düsseldorf‘s allotments over the Swiss Alps down to Holland’s campers‘ paradise.

LUTZ HILGERS Der pausenlos und perfektionistisch arbeitende Fotograf Lutz Hilgers findet kaum Freiraum für persönliche Projekte. Und doch war Lutz derart von Identity inspiriert, dass er sich dem Thema als beobachtender Regisseur näherte. Durch die Spiegelungen in den Bildern entsteht eine zweite räumliche Ebene, die dadurch eine erweiterte Betrachtung schafft. Die Ebenen verschmelzen zu einer neuen, eigenen Aussage. Die Grundidee erschließt sich dem Betrachter mehr, wenn die Bilder hinter Glas als wiederum spiegelnde Oberfläche gezeigt werden und der Betrachter durch sein eigenes Spiegelbild selbst ein Teil der Aufnahme wird.

Photographer Lutz Hilgers, a non-stop working perfectionist, hardly finds the time for personal projects. And yet, the topic Identity inspired Lutz so much that he approached the subject as an investigative director. The reflections in the images create a second spatial level which gives more room for inspection. The levels merge into a new individual statement. The basic idea more readily opens up to the viewer when the images are shown behind glass – yet another reflective surface – and thus the viewer becomes part of the image through his own reflection.
