I had the pleasure of exhibitingthe work of Robert Straight for almost 30 years.
Bob was a master painter/sculptor,always growing and doing some of his finest work right up to the point of his passing.
Bob was an inspiring teacher, with many grateful talented artists indebted to his kindness and wisdom.
Bob above all, was a joyful and honorableman alwaysyouthful in style and thought. You will be missed!
BOB ON THE INSPIRATION OF THE WATERCOLORS
I started these paintingson paper as a break from my previous work which took a lot of time just for the construction of the substrateand hardly any time to actually paint. The first watercolor / gouache was based on the floor tiles of my hospital room and has snowballed into this group of paintings.This first painting led to simply dividing the paper into two zones; one with a pattern, the other containing an organic shape that later morphed into an elliptical shape. That then became two elliptical shapes and the paintingscontinue to evolve. Some of my references and concerns includeprime numbers, (1,2,3,5,7,&11), ferris wheels, flags. bow ties, rays, and spikes. Recently using two ellipses I’ve been thinkingabout couples boundtogether while remaining separate, or splittingcells. These are some of my thoughtsthat provoke
