IRVING PETLIN : THOUGH THE YEARS

Mr. Petlin strove to preserve history in a style that was neither realistic nor abstract. Rather than depict brutal events graphically, he reimagined them with subtlety and surrealism.

“He was totally unclassifiable,” John Yau, a poet and critic, who has written about and interviewed Mr. Petlin, said in a telephone interview. “He’s kind of a modern-day symbolist.”
