Gone are the days where bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms had the monopoly on tiles. It wasn’t too long ago when tiles were seen as a purely practical choice but the landscape with tiles has dramatically changed within the last few years and it could be argued that tiles are now rivaling paint, wallpaper, vinyl and carpet tiles as interior must-haves. In the first design, lines are laid over solid colours to make a spatial and layered effect, while in the second design, tiny rectangles or blocks of colour are spaced apart and repeated to create a fine melange.

panning the ground floor of an office building, a large glass facade surrounds the building’s entrance giving passers-by a floor-to-ceiling view into the restaurant.

An intimate dining and bar area to the front features a dropped ceiling made from dark wooden slats. Nestled between are cleverly hidden bespoke can downlights, positioned to form pools of warm light above the tables and bar, picking up the sparkle in the glass and silverware below.

An integrated linear line of light under the bar counter washes light down the copper finish to highlight the warmth and opulence in the material palette.

The all-LED lighting scheme supports the interior design concept, which is based on the art of Turkish coffee, and the balance between the bitter and sweet or light and dark. Two undulating ceiling features create a strong design statement and look like luminaires in their own right.

Discreetly positioned LEDs around the edge of the features’ white moulded surfaces create a wash of illumination reminiscent of rippled coffee and a strong contrast against the rich timber slats framing them.

Large mirrors mount the burnt cocoa textured walls surrounding the dining area and have been backlit to create a warm halo that illuminates the vertical surfaces and entices people into the space from the street outside. A soft perimeter glow that frames the dining area is achieved by uplights positioned behind the seating, creating an additional layer of light and highlighting the interior’s different textures.

Two timber walls that frame either end of the venue have copper bespoke circular disk wall lights mounted to them, creating a reflective surface that radiates a diffused light around the edges and draws customers’ eyes down the full length of the restaurant. Sparkling neon signage punctuates the walls and highlights the brand’s bold spirit.

The lighting scheme continues into the washrooms, where mirrors have been backlit to create focal points and contrast against the dark interior palette. Within the cubicles, light levels have been kept low with cove lighting washing the back walls adding to the drama.

The main circulation area has carefully positioned downlights to help with wayfinding.

Haz is a dining experience that evolves so a lighting control system was installed to enable the client to select the right scene for the right time of day, making light a central component of the space. Energy-efficient lighting was also key to the brief and Nulty achieved this through approximately 19 watts per square metre.

irst impressions are incredibly important as those working in the bar and restaurant sector fully appreciate. In today’s competitive climate, capturing the attention of customers as soon as they walk through the door is vital with the overall design aesthetics the key to success. Equally as important as the food and drink that’s served, the interior design has to be high on the priority list for all managers with the environment and ambience encouraging customers to stay longer, order more and return.

But given that most bars, restaurants and hotels are high traffic areas, keeping surfaces looking at their best is a huge challenge, which is where tiles come in. Tiles are a highly durable, stylish surface covering that will transform walls and floors, creating interior spaces that not only deliver on wow factor but functionality too.

The choice of designs, colours, and sizes are growing at a pace bringing designer style to walls and floors. Whether you’re looking to create an Art Deco-inspired bar brimming with jade green tones and pops of matte black, or an industrial-style restaurant that marries together natural, aged materials with highly polished metals, you can now specify tiles as part of your design scheme to deliver incredible results.

It’s all about identifying a design theme and using tiles to bring it to life. We’ve seen some truly show-stopping designs through recent projects with tiles specified for a range of bars and restaurants.

Tiled feature floors are very much of the moment, increasingly specified for all areas from lobbies and entrances through to full restaurants floors. We’re also seeing patterned and coloured tiles selected for areas behind the bar and in open kitchens, to create a striking backdrop that can be easily cleaned and maintained.

There’s so much scope when it comes to creating inspiring spaces with tiles, it’s having the confidence to be bold. Now more than ever before, customers are on the search for that Instagram moment – the ultimate feature wall where they can grab a selfie and tag on social media with a backdrop that oozes style.

What to use on walls and floors

Ceramic tiles are bursting with colour, character and design. Incredibly versatile they can be as sophisticated or impactful as your chosen design scheme dictates, and because they’re made from ceramic they’re durable, waterproof and easy to maintain.

No special sealing or cleaning required.

Floors

High traffic areas in the hospitality sector require a floor covering that will withstand pressure over time. Porcelain tiles are durable, low maintenance and, if properly installed, will last for decades, which saves money in repair and replacement costs.

Before you focus on the design aesthetics of a tile, check the slip rating, as it needs to be suitable for where the tiles are to be installed. The pendulum test (PTV) and ramp test (R) are used to calculate the slip resistance of a tile, and give you the best indication of how suitable a tile is in a particular environment. For example, you need a high slip resistance in wet areas where water may cause slippage under foot – lobbies, restaurant floors, bathrooms.

Key trends

Trends come and go with the seasons, while others endure. As tiles are installed and specified to last, the key is to tap into key trends through feature areas on walls and floors to create a space that is on brand while being true to a design movement.

For 2019 we will expect to see some stunning colours coming through in tiles.

Spiced honey, Dulux’s Colour of the Year for 2019, will feature throughout design schemes as well as other autumnal shades such as amber and caramel. Watch out for white and grey marble effect tiles with ripples of honey and caramel for a luxe look.

Pastel shades will be embraced albeit in a discreet manner. Everyone is talking about blush. It’s the go-to shade that works well in all spaces. It pairs perfectly with metallic accents, industrial greys, natural timber and intense black. The trend for bringing the outside in is also set to continue. Think industrial designs with concrete effect floors, exposed brick, aged weathered metals and distressed timber.

Examples:

Beck Hall Hotel This Yorkshire Dales hotel was looking to create an impact in its newly-extended restaurant, selecting the striking pattern of British Ceramic Tile’s Devonstone to create interest around the exterior of the bar. The black, decorative ceramic tiles combine beautifully with the dark wood exterior of the bar.

The Anchor Pub The relaxed, British-themed dining space of the Anchor pub in Milton Keynes chose traditional-styled metro tiles in a stunning blue colourway to decorate the wall behind the bar.

Who said blue was limited to the royals.

Tiger Hornsby Situated on Newcastle’s iconic Quayside, Tiger Hornsby is one of the first new bars to open in the city’s regeneration area.

CRYSTALS CREATING AN EVER-CHANGING EFFECT Installed on the Champs-Elysées, the city of Paris has unveiled six fountains designed by design duo Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.

he fountains, which feature 3060 crystals in total, were manufactured in close collaboration with Swarovski’s engineering team in Austria and are the first permanent outdoor installation featuring Swarovski crystals in the public sphere.

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec were commissioned by the Fonds Pour Paris (the Paris Foundation) to create the six fountains that will sit on newly-renovated basins, originally created in the 19th century, on the Champs-Elysées roundabout between Place de la Concorde and the Arc de Triomphe. Each fountain consists of a central mast in bronze which supports 258 custom-made Swarovski crystal elements illuminated by LEDs. The set gently rotates, shining like a moving chandelier with different light moods by day and by night, and is accompanied by waterfalls running through the crystals to create ever-changing effects.

This is the first project by the Fonds Pour Paris, created in 2015 to restore and enliven Parisian heritage through contemporary art, and supported by the fund’s patrons. A total of three years of development, 40 companies and 250 people went into the design and production of the fountains, which are jewels of technology comparable to most complex creations of the aviation or watchmaking industries.

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have strived to achieve a design balance between the monumental fountain structure and the delicacy of its composition and materials. The fountains’ geometry aligns with the height of surrounding trees to subtly merge into the urban landscape while paying respect to its historical setting.

This is the first time Swarovski crystals have been used for a permanent outdoor installation in a public space. The company’s technical experts worked in close collaboration with the Bouroullec brothers to successfully combine the custom cut crystals with LEDs in a technically complex process that required a new patent.

A key challenge in the Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec design was to connect the crystals without any visible components, so they appear to be floating. A new support structure was developed by Swarovski to realise this design vision, and to also allow for quick maintenance access to the LEDs and the crystals. For each fountain, Swarovski has incorporated 60m of LED strips with a total light output of 50,000 lumens (517 watts), making the fountains very energy-efficient and sustainable.

Ronan Bouroullec commented: “For this project, it was important for us to stay in keeping with historical tradition by choosing crystal, a material that is similar to the one that was already found in the previous fountains on the Champs-Elysées, the glass.

We worked with Swarovski and their design office to combine crystal and light in a discreet and innovative luminous device. In this instance, crystal is like a living substance; its perception shifts with the changing light of day and over the course of the seasons. At night, the crystal diffuses a soft light. Swarovski’s technical expertise also allowed us to design a crystal that would withstand harsh weather conditions and environmental changes due to its composition and mode of assembly.”

The WelPod provides undistracted sensory experiences courtesy of pre-programmed heat, sound, light and airflow, allowing users to sequence events in the room based on a particular mood, activity or desired outcome.

A user-friendly touch switch allows users to create on-the-fly adjustments as desired as well.

The driving force behind the WelPod’s soothing environment lies in the innovative selection and use of natural, therapeutic materials in its construction.

Glowing salt brick walls enclose a clean, open space while infusing a plethora of therapeutic benefits. In addition to storing heat and increasing efficiency, unrefined salt cleans the air, relieves skin problems, cleanses the respiratory system and emits negative ions, which elevates mood.

Unlike a typical sauna, the WelPod requires no preheating and remains warm at all times. This is possible because of the efficient building envelope, interior salt brick walls that act as a thermal mass, and the intelligent control system.

The energy-efficient design consumes considerably less power than a traditional sauna, swimming pool or hot tub. Additionally, the natural radiant heat emanating from the salt walls provides the most natural path to elevating body temperature. In addition to its heating benefits, the natural salt composition of the walls contributes to easy maintenance by neutralising odours and cleaning the air with its antifungal and antibacterial qualities.

The WelPod is available as a stand-alone structure that can be placed into any outdoor setting, or as an interior room that can be built into any floorplan.

AMTICO CHOSEN FOR TENPIN’S REFURBISHMENT

When Tenpin decided to embark on a complete refurbishment, it was in need of practical flooring that could cope with a high level of footfall, and Amtico proved to be the perfect choice. The Amtico Signature collection was used in the approach to the bowling lanes to direct the player to the game, while also making the bowlers’ lanes distinct from one another. Amtico Carpet tiles were used throughout the rest of the facility, as they are hard wearing, easy to replace and allowed the design team to create specific zones. They also helped create the illusion of pathways through the layout, guiding visitors to different zones.

Armourcoat created a ‘quiet zone’ on its stand at the Surface Design Show in February to highlight the benefits of its acoustic plaster system. The company also featured among the main stage speakers and presentation to the 2019 Surface Design Award winners.

NEW FLOORING PRODUCTS FROM KÄHRS

Kährs introduced exciting new flooring products during Munich’s BAU show in January, where over 250,000 visitors attended. With an impressive exhibition stand spanning over 200m2 – including an integrated bar area – Kährs proudly showcased new wood flooring designs with large, striking wall samples.

ew designs included reclaimed-themed boards, ultra-matt wood floors and a brand-new collection of modern rustic wood floors – Boardwalk.

However, stealing the show was the anticipated launch of an entirely new product category – Kährs Luxury Tiles (LT).

Originally built as townhouses in the early 19th century by Graham Taylor, his work was influenced by the Georgian and Regency periods. Working closely with Redrow London and John Sisk, Selectaglaze installed a sample unit to show the reduction of noise that can be achieved and how unobtrusive secondary glazing can be. Satisfied with the performance and aesthetics, Redrow London engaged Selectaglaze to complete the rest of the building.

69 units were installed in five different unit styles all using toughened safety glass.

Curved units were also installed to mirror the styles of the primary windows.
