APRIL 2019

There’s no question that lighting is a vital aspect of interior design, yet it is too often overlooked – thought of as a boring, less creative part of the design process. However, this month Inex explores a number of projects across the globe where lighting is at the heart of the schemes.

W E L C O M E

WELCOME TO

To start your journey of light discovery, turn to page 08 to uncover a new lighting product by Swedish lighting manufacturer ateljé Lyktan in collaboration with London-based creative agency Fourmation. The new modular lighting system, Vault, has endless possibilities for creating different lighting patterns and feature ceiling grids. On page 20, explore Nyx, a rooftop bar named after the Greek goddess of the night. The bar is wrapped in UV reactive cords offering a surreal lighting experience high above central Shanghai. Flick to page 46 to travel from China to Madrid, and discover an underground brick vaulted bar where lighting is crucial. Bala Perdida Club is hidden under a nineteenth-century palace and uses playful lighting and mirrors to make the space feel like an endless tunnel. If you turn to page 64 you’ll escape the enclosed and tiny space of Bala Perdida and discover an expansive outdoor lighting range by Bravo. I hope you enjoy this edition. Don’t forget, you can also access all of Inex’s features and product inspiration at your fingertips via the magazine’s state-of-the-art app. To download your version free of charge, simply search ‘Inex-online’ on the App Store or Google Play.

AN EXCITING MODULAR LIGHTING SYSTEM Swedish lighting manufacturer ateljĂŠ Lyktan has launched its first completely modular multifunctional lighting system in collaboration with London-based creative agency Fourmation. With endless possibilities of creating different lighting patterns and feature ceiling grids, Vault offers unrivalled flexibility.

Easy installation

ombining ateljÊ Lyktan’s technological expertise and Fourmation’s experience in interior design, the team was able to create a spatial concept that can complement the architectural features of any interior space. Having noticed a need for a modular system that does not require a complex ceiling layout, Fourmation came up with a concept that can create a bespoke design by using only standard components. Vault can be customised and altered according to the space it occupies and provides an ideal lighting solution for high-level open, exposed ceilings.

I N E X

A P R I L

2 0 1 9

Especially well-suited for retail and office spaces, Vault can be installed easily as it requires only a small amount of components linked together with four-way connection blocks. The unlimited configuration options enable the system to be used as a grid creating a ceiling in itself, with the possibility of acoustic tiles or stretched fabric used in conjunction with the linear lights. Vault can also be used vertically on walls to create product displays. 8

E X P O S E

Vault comes with a smart-phone app that allows users to easily modify lighting levels and temperatures, creating a controllable lighting environment. Available in three standard lengths 1200, 1800 and 2400 the light profiles can be connected to illuminate both up and down, or inwards to create very different light variations. Oliver Jones, General Manager at ateljé Lyktan commented: “Vault is ateljé Lyktan’s first design collaboration outside of Sweden and provides a clever and flexible lighting solution that allows full freedom of expression.” 9

ommanding, convivial and named after the Greek goddess of the night, Nyx is a rooftop bar in central Shanghai. Inspired by classical architectural ruins and wrapped in UV reactive cords, it affords spectacular city views. A monumental frame for the futuristic metropolis’ backdrop of glowing neon and luminous highways, Nyx offers an alternative, surreal experience in China’s foremost city of lights. Maintaining a continuous dialogue with its contemporary context, Nyx echoes a distant past while projecting towards an abstract future, blending tropes of cultures and identities. The resulting installation sets a new ‘phygital’ aesthetic, creating a surreal spacetime experience in which visitors can momentarily lose themselves. Drawing on his personal experiences of Milan life, Alberto Caiola’s design references the contemporary duality of ancient ruins – in particular, the Column of San Lorenzo. A tourist attraction by day, for decades, it has doubled as an informal nightlife setting for the city’s younger generations. Its openness creates both a comfortable space for groups to gather and convene, as well as inspires intimacy. In a city as dense and as populous as Shanghai, these were precisely the qualities that made a modern interpretation of an ancient sites so fitting for a bar destination.

The structure is wrapped in more than 21,000m of UV reactive cord. Black lights activate a glow similar to that of Shanghai’s highways come nightfall – a steady, luminous blue. At the same time, the cords wrapped around the installation’s frame, offer an abstract take on familiar tangles of cable and wire, visible throughout the city both overhead and on buildings. Punctuating the structure’s blue glow are periodic dashes of red. Luminous taps for the bar’s range of over 20 craft beers, they immediately draw attention to the venue’s primary product. Visually separating the bar from the open-plan – and open-air – space are dramatic arches, framing the venue’s focal point. A literal hand-woven architecture of light, and a temple to Shanghai rituals present and future, Nyx presents Shanghai night owls with an openness that at once draws groups close, and affords spaciousness in an otherwise close-knit city. Projecting a distant past, flanked by futuristic skyscrapers, Nyx presents an alternate perspective to Shanghai’s relentless modernity. www.albertocaiola.com I N E X

By having in mind the influences of the circus director, Myronova created the ultimate luxurious experience by providing an exquisite combination of gold tones, textures, shapes and fabrics. Tatyana’s main goal in creating this luxury interior was to have it correspond to the client’s needs. To ensure the space expressed the homeowner’s style and taste, she included three key things in her design: gold, animals, and Versace. Filled with brilliant golds, animalistic vibes, and rhinestones, Tatyana created a beautiful royal feast for the eyes. Using layers of gold, Eradze’s favourite colour, throughout the space – gold chairs, dressers, chandeliers, mirrors and golden stucco molding can be found everywhere. Giya’s fascination for the famous, colourful and intense patterns of the recognised brand, Versace is ever present in the design scheme. www.covethouse.eu

eneath the Madrilenian neighbourhood “Barrio de Las Letras (today a neuralgic point of the city), under a refurbished palace where Hotel Axel Madrid is located, there are two vaulted spaces built in brick. It is in this provocative and secret location, where the Bala Perdida (Lost Bullet) Club is located. EL EQUIPO CREATIVO had two main design focuses. On one hand the singularity of the existing space, with two subterranean dark vaults built in brick, as antique caves or cellars. On the other hand, the proposed venue, a night club that should have the versatility to work as a snack and cocktail bar, where a fast mutation would happen at some point of the night and the general scenery would quickly switch from a warm atmosphere into a lysergic dance floor.

This need for transformation and that kind of clandestine atmosphere made the design team think of a space with a close relation to the mystery where they could not omit the magic and the optical illusions. The key aspect of the project was the use of two protagonist elements.

The mirrors, which were placed on both ends of each vault, produce an optical illusion known as the endless mirror. When facing two mirrors, the reflection of one on the other makes the reflected image, the image of the vault, become infinite. These effects make the vaults turn into endless tunnels. 4 9

Another highlight is the changing lighting. At the axis of the two vaults, two longitudinal dynamic LED lamps were proposed among the suspended acoustic panels that change speed and colour depending on the different scenes at the venue. Also, the bar works as a lamp itself, providing a warm fire toned light that serves as a basis for the playful lights in the surfaces of the vaults. www.elequipocreativo.com I N E X

he layout is pure and simple, with a symbolic ‘milestone’ placed at the centre right on the central-axis. The milestone holds an obvious implication – a new starting point for SND to move towards an internationally representative buyer’s shop. In addition, the church-like architectural form serves as an embodiment of SND’s brand belief, which is to strike a balance between keeping the brand personality and catching onto fashion trends.

The open display area on both sides resembles a square. Through its unique layout, customers can know clearly the routes and can view every product in display while walking, offering them a chance to select and compare goods easily. The design team had not only taken into consideration the site’s own narrow and linear characteristics, but also the brand’s functional requirements for art, behavior, and display. Seen from any angle outside the shop, its hierarchical layout and the texture of materials have enabled the shop to be a memorable landscape for any passerby.

Within the cube, Various Associates continues the idea of symmetric design, offering the interior space a sacred and ceremonial sense. Jewellery is displayed in the long straight showcase right in the middle, which is easy for customers to choose carefully. Luxury brands of haute couture are displayed in both sides, and are illuminated with professional soft lighting so as to show the texture of the clothes. The reception desk is curved and stands at the heart of the space, dividing the display area and the rest area in the cube while offering timely services to customers in need.

In this project, Various Associates has overcome the conventional thinking mode of traditional brand stores. Not only have the products been fully displayed, the brand personality of SND was also highlighted in its own unique design language. The size of window display area has been maximised to the largest extent, while at the same time, the flexibility and diversity of product display were retained, which offered more possibilities for brand activities and presentations follow up. This innovative design by Various Associates marks the achievement of quality and visual performance, and realised the association of brand space with urban life. www.various-associates.com

hanks to its decorative look, Bover’s Outdoor collections can be placed both in exterior and interior environments. In addition to design, their durability also make them perfect for commercial spaces. This collection’s common denominator is the combination of resistance and sensitivity. Resistant because the collection is designed to be able to live comfortably outdoors, and sensitivity because in the delicacy with which it sifts the light and the general warmth of the lighting collection. These features mean that both the inside and outside of an architectural space help to create a sense of continuity. www.bover.es

o create a cinematic entrance, the design team studied camera development and used design elements from various generations of the camera lens to design the door. Paired with smart technology, the kinetic door rotates to create different pocket spaces that cater to different programmes. For example, it can be rotated to create a pocket space for reception, or to transform the entrance into a waiting area for latecomers during a seminar. When the camera door rotates, the overhead aperture also controls the amount of light at the entrance space. The circular stair is a hanging structure. Inspired by camera aperture, it plays with light, shadow and speed. The design team worked closely with structural engineers to translate camera elements into structural elements. To create a precise twist, each step was constructed using 3-D printing and casting. Both the door and the stairs were fabricated using brass and painted in black. Just like a black-painted camera that documents its interaction with the photographer; f22 also documents its interaction with time and people. Over time, the black paint will wear off to reveal the brass underneath.

ith a shared commitment to natural materials, nurturing artisanal craft and sustainability, Nature Squared and Bethan are both thrilled to showcase this ground-breaking and highly innovative collection of furniture and accessories to the public for the very first time. Although Nature Squared’s surfaces can be found in the majority of the world’s superyachts, its latest venture with Bethan brings a new perspective to furniture with the use of previously undiscovered materials, skills and techniques. Utilising nature’s finest and most beguiling materials, this collaboration brings Gray’s highly original and elegant designs to fruition. The collection consists of a capiz shell shelving unit, jade and pheasant feather lounge chairs, pearl shell cylindrical stools, with the hero items including a scallop shell table and a pen shell coffee table.

“When I met Nature Squared cofounders Paul Hoeve and Lay Koon Tan, I knew we were kindred spirits as soon as I heard their story and realised how passionate they are about nurturing craft. The opportunity to work with these incredible materials, and apply them to furniture for the first time, has been really exciting, especially as it will bring Nature Squared’s work to the attention of a wider audience and expand their stewardship of Filipino craftspeople in the Philippines” – BETHAN GRAY

After significant research and development, Nature Squared has diligently created new engineering solutions, in conjunction with Gray, that merge traditional artisanal skills with precision furniture making and exquisite design. The inlay process for each item takes many weeks to complete due to the intricate detailing and high quality finish – and the results are unlike anything that has ever been created for the furniture market before. Bethan and Nature Squared’s collaboration marks the coming together of like-minded and passionate people with a shared belief in nurturing craft and sustainability.

Gray is one of Britain’s most celebrated furniture and homeware designers, having been awarded four Elle Decoration British Design Awards. Nature Squared’s unparalleled quality of surface applications and creative solutions have been quietly inspiring and transforming the perception of ethically sourced and sustainable design for the past 18 years, and used in collaborations with the likes of Rolls Royce, Montblanc and BMW. Employing 200 master craftsmen, it has elevated heritage craft to heirloom quality. It has now moved from its roots in the bespoke market, to make its work accessible to a wider audience and promote the compatibility of such skills and quality with environmental, cultural and social stewardship. The exotic but plentiful shells are sourced from Filipino fishing communities with on-going conservation projects while the British pheasant feathers are a natural by-product from birds that have been sustainably processed for food. Exploration is at the heart of everything Bethan and Nature Squared do. “Creating objects of outstanding beauty and quality is absolutely at the core of ensuring that the materials we work with are recognised and cherished. In Bethan, we have found a like-minded individual and we are delighted to be working with her on this collection. The more we find a market for what we produce, the more we create a virtuous circle of jobs, appreciation for materials that are currently seen as waste, acceptance of sustainable practices, and self-belief in our people.” – LAY KOON TAN, CO-FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF NATURE SQUARED

HEALING ACOUSTICS

According to healing design principles, superior acoustics in hospitals are recognised as one of the most important factors in their design.

T

his is being proved in an innovative temporary patient room for a major new hospital being built in Copenhagen. Bispebjerg hospital is an ultramodern psychiatric project covering 22,500m2 which includes an emergency admission unit and provides 200 rooms for patients. The study focuses on creating a stress-free environment where patients feel secure and at peace. In this room, the lighting is a combination of natural daylight and dynamic LED lighting that is specially adapted to suit the circadian

rhythm. Good acoustics are ensured by light coloured Troldtekt ceiling panels in a fine finish, while the walls have been clad with acoustic oak slats which provide natural ventilation with more fresh air and reduced solar gain in the summer months. Apart from new projects, good acoustics are equally importantinexistingbuildings being given a change of use. For example, the former post office in Hvidovre, also near Copenhagen, has been converted into a modern healthcare centre which has a welcoming feel and excellent

rehabilitation facilities. Here the architects have struck a fine balance between refined and more rustic materials. For example, on the ground floor, high ceilinged rooms that used to be the former post office storerooms have Troldtekt acoustic ceiling panels installed throughout to ensure good acoustics. Specified throughout the UK and Europe, the benefits of 100% Troldtekt natural wood wool panels include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability as documented by Cradle to Cradle certification at silver level. www.troldtekt.co.uk 01978 664255

REMODELING A PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN OPULENT ART DECO STYLE A luxury home in the prestigious South Kensington district of London has been completely refitted with none other than MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME (MTX) and MEDITE MR MDF.

T

he opulent interiors of the large town house were designed and created especially for the project by Infinitus Bespoke Interiors, to meet the desires of the client for a completely art deco inspired home. The design brief demanded each room reflect the demure decadence of the 1930s and 40s, and bring a unique character to every space. The brief defined the bedrooms and bathrooms be refitted to incorporate smooth, clean lines, high gloss surfaces, mirror cladding and ambient lighting, while the installation of a bar and cinema room further reflect a taste for extravagance. Although MDF may not traditionally be first thought of when tasked with redesigning

a luxury home, Infinitus Bespoke Interiors specified the panels as the best for the project, based on extensive previous work with the products. Aside from their abilities to resist humidity and moisture, MEDITE MR and MTX were chosen for their smooth and consistent qualities, making them perfect for machining into the bespoke shapes required by CNC router. MTX was created as a sustainably produced 1 2 8

MDF panel with durability and dimensional stability in mind. It is guaranteed for up to 50 years above ground, and provides architects and designers with an entirely new construction material, for design flexibility and endless opportunities for creativity. www.mdfosb.com 01322 424900

Built in 1830 and designed by George Smith, the Grade II* Listed St Albans former Town Hall is one of the city’s most prominent landmarks. The magnificent venue has been repurposed to designs by John Mc Aslan and Partners as a world-class centre for arts and culture at the heart of one of Britain’s most historic cities.

A

s part of the refurbishment Selectaglaze, a specialist designer of secondary glazing systems that has operated in St Albans for over 50 years, was approached by the consultants to consider ways of improving environmental controls.

Very large tripartite single glazed windows in the first floor Assembly Room offered poor thermal insulation. Working closely with contractor Willmott Dixon Construction a sample window was first produced for the Assembly Room. This was a special three-part vertical sliding unit measuring 4.3 x 1.7m.

KWC OFFERS LUXURY SINKS AND TAPS FOR HIGH-END PROJECTS

When Norfolk-based hut builder, the English Shepherds Hut, was looking for a product that would enhance the exterior of its bespoke huts, the company turned to Osmo UK to provide them with a hardwearing, weather resistant, and aesthetically pleasing wood finish. THE POWER OF COLLABORATION

Morgan, contract furniture designer and manufacturer, will showcase two new collaborative projects at its London showroom (1 Dallington Street, EC1V 0BH) during Clerkenwell Design Week.

T

he architectural Rakino lounge collection, by Designer Tim Rundle, juxtaposes soft sculpted upholstery with a strong, low line frame. The clean linear structure emphasizes crisp timber detailing born from a dialogue between the precision of CNC manufacturing and a handcrafted finish. The collection will offer two lounge chairs and a selection of coffee tables. Following Mark McClure’s bold and dynamic

installation at its showroom two years ago, Morgan has collaborated for a second time with the artist to create a selection of new feature coffee tables for the Goodwood collection. Pushing the boundaries between furniture and art, the tables are characterised by strong geometric inlay tops with splashes of brass. Also on display will be the recent additions to the Rio table collection. Combining skills and expertise with Architect Mehran Gharleghi
