Putting out the art deco carpet

Royal warrant holder, Brintons, has been awarded with the prestigious Woven Carpet Design Installation of the Year Award from The Campaign for Wool’s International Wool Carpet and Rug Awards 2016. This achievement was awarded for Brintons’ art deco inspired installation at the late night, iconic venue Quaglino’s.

These awards were launched for this first time at this year’s Wool Floor Show held in Stamford Bridge, London. Hosted on the 23rd March 2016, this year’s multitude of awards ranged from Rug Design of the Year to the Award for Innovation in Yarn Development. Altogether, there were INEX-ONLINE.COM

14 various categories to this year’s awards. Brintons was awarded with the Woven Carpet Design Installation of the Year award for its 1930s inspired carpet design for well-known restaurant Quaglino’s, situated in London’s exclusive Mayfair district. Brintons’ achievement emerged from its striking custom carpet installation for the restaurant. This bespoke carpet design features geometric designs that perfectly complement the 1930 period style

Completed back in 2014, the vibrant carpet was installed throughout the restaurant and sweeping staircase using 200m2 of Brintons’ custom Axminster carpet. The carpet was modified to feature a dramatic linear style to reflect the art deco influence of the existing interior. This carpet installation was part of a £3m renovation to update this prestigious establishment with Brintons working together with Russell Sage Studios to deliver its luxurious Axminster carpet. Hospitality furniture – it’s all about lifestyle

The hospitality sector has been undergoing a transformation for several years now, and with the ongoing quest to refine ‘guest experience’, the changes look set to continue. Tim Armitt, Managing Director at Lyndon Design, talks about the transformations taking place in the hospitality sector and how lifestyle demands are impacting on seating and furniture designs.

F

urniture that would look equally at home in the domestic environment has traditionally been specified for the hospitality sector. However, as hotels and other hospitality venues increasingly seek to fulfil the needs of their corporate clients, the arrival of work lounges, phone booths and touchdown spaces are just some of the trends that have been influencing hospitality design over recent years. Let’s take the conference sector, for example. This sector has exploded INEX-ONLINE.COM

in recent years, and as it continues to boom, more and more hotels are looking to grab a slice of the action. Today, a zealous conference-goer could travel to a new city every week and never exhaust the movable feast of issues and ideas – and of course, hotels have been quick to capitalise on the opportunity presented. Lobbies are now high-tech, multi-use spaces Improving corporate guest loyalty is high on the hotel agenda and nowhere is this more evident than in the lobby. This space has always been an important gathering spot and a destination in itself – indeed at many hotels, it’s the most exciting, most glamorous area in the entire building. However, today’s lobby has to be multi-functional. Whilst it’s

still an area for checking in and out, it’s also a social hub, an information source, a refreshment area, a restaurant, a cafe, and even a gift shop. For corporate guests, it’s also a remote office, communal work space and meeting hub. Hence, as hotels become a more popular third space for work, the trend to improve lobbies and lounges as touchdown workspaces will prevail. The investment in furniture that balances design aesthetic with advanced ergonomics will triumph in this sector. It’s also important that the lobby is a place to stay connected through technology – where guests can use their smart phones, tablets, and laptops, and where meetings can be conducted in a relaxed environment. Clusters of furniture that offer more private personal areas for meetings or for individual work such as comfortable modular seating, plush armchairs and sofas – and even bar tables or islands with stool-height seating – are now widely specified throughout hotel lobbies. Such furniture offers a way for people to be immediately adjacent to the action without being part of it. Staying connected Of course, seating and furniture have also had to adapt to the demands of technology. With the reliance upon mobile electronic devices now a key consideration, and the need for keeping mobiles, laptops and tablet devices charged, integral charging points are now commonplace in upholstered seating and furniture. Such integration is clean, seamless and aesthetically coordinates with each piece. INEX-ONLINE.COM

14 COMMERCIAL FURNITURE

Right: The Albany armchairs are commonly found gracing hospitality lounges and bars Below: High back Arthur sofas and armchairs maximise the feeling of comfort and privacy whilst making a strong design statement

Modular soft seating is also a popular specification for the hospitality sector. With straight and curved configurations, double and triple units, benches and corner pieces available, and with a variety of colours, styles and arrangements to choose from, the permutations are endless. This furniture can be used to not only create a stunning centrepiece in its own right, but it can also provide the perfect auxiliary piece to many other seating products. The need to stand out from the crowd will prevail There is a need to stand out from the crowd and provide that luxury wow factor that was once exclusive to leading four-star, five-star, and boutique hotels around the globe. Today, however, there is a surge in demand for bespoke designs from all types of venues as they seek upholstery to create jawdropping decadence, combined with comfort, flexibility and practicality. Handcrafted seating with timber aesthetics is becoming a firm favourite across both small and large-scale projects. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Guest rooms are changing too, with smaller rooms becoming the norm as guests spend more time in social places. Desks are becoming less necessary in the room, as people prefer to sit on chairs or on beds to work when using their laptop or tablet. To provide added luxury, many hotels are going the extra mile to add bespoke touches such as wall panels, bedroom headboards and ottomans, together with chaise longues and benches. Individual style and detail may be created through the addition of vertical and horizontal fluting, button detailing, and specialist stitch and panelling facets. From major chains to smaller boutique enterprises, hospitality venues are redesigning their properties to cater for the new lifestyle of their guests. The more successful venues have created spaces that are comfortable and simple without sacrificing luxury; allowing guests to feel quite at home, yet fully connected at the same time. Choosing seating and furniture that can double as work and play, as well as providing a refined aesthetic, is now a key consideration. lyndon.co.uk ÂŤ

elegance showcased and the ability to induce a home that is easy to live in. Karen has an understanding of the importance of combining flexible and functional design solutions with elegance and glamour. Personally taking inspiration from Mary FoxLinton, Karen loves to use bursts of colour in a bold and confident manner and places great emphasis on finding show stopping artwork and unusual objects to fulfil her clients’ needs.

Down to the last detail Moving to London at the age of 18 Interior Designer, Karen Howes shared a flat with Martin Waller, the founder of interior design agency Andrew Martin. Martin has been an inspiration to Karen and mentored her throughout her career. Today, Karen Howes is at the helm of interior design firm, Taylor Howes, which works with cosmopolitan individuals.

K

aren Howes’ clients regularly request glamorous, yet practical interiors which she undertakes exceptionally. Karen tends to stay away from any form of signature styling and prefers to focus on providing her clients with a home that is truly personal to that individual. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Clients within Taylor Howes’ criteria expect seamless attention to detail within their schemes. As a company, Taylor Howes designs its own joinery in-house to distinguish itself from the market, offering its clients exclusive and unique schemes. to a scheme Right: The property proved to be a game changer for Karen and the team Far right: The brief for Knightsbridge House was to create an interior that was more Armani than Versace

Knightsbridge House Knightsbridge House is a converted church which Karen and the firm recently completed behind Harrods. A project of a lifetime, the property proved to be a real game changer for Karen and the team, as it tested the firm’s abilities in designing a family home in a high-volume, challenging space. Although it was a complicated build project – the first major project worked on as Howes & Rigby, a collaboration between Taylor Howes and developers Rigby & Rigby – the end result is amazing, something the Karen and the firm are and always will be, hugely proud of. The brief for Knightsbridge House was to create an interior that was more Armani than Versace, using understated colours and calm neutrals.

17 INSIGHT

The clients were an international family who had fallen in love with the church’s beautiful architecture, so it was important to them that Karen retained the building’s original historical features – in particular the vistas through the arches. The clients wanted to keep a lot of the character the house held with regards to the beams and the angels. Karen and the team worked with Sally Storey to make these come to life, resulting in the house being serene and magical at dusk. Inspiration Karen takes inspiration from anywhere, stating: “Inspiration is all around you.” She is a regular traveller, for both work and pleasure, and always comes back home with new ideas to share within the creative meetings held at the firm. With a love of texture and detail, alongside clean palettes and strong accent colours, Karen works with great design houses such as Mary Fox-Linton and Dedar which produces beautiful textile fabrics for Taylor Howes’ projects. Karen and her team enjoy using pattern and texture within their schemes, which Karen feels that some designers are ‘shy’ of using. She believes that the use of texture and patterns bring depth to a scheme and can ‘simply pull a scheme together’. “I love colour and would die if I was restricted by one colour,” comments Karen. “I do however get on a ‘theme’, so it was Hermes orange last year, this year it is navy blue and white and gold and now we are moving onto baby pink and rose gold – the combinations are endless which is one of the reasons I love my job, we never get stale.” As a collector and a lover of detail, Karen does not admire the minimalistic look. She believes there is a balance achieved by Taylor Howes and something that she personally feels that Taylor Howes is recognised for. She says: “The subtle balance of decorating a space to make it feel balanced, luxurious, but elegant and never overwhelming.”

The Meadowcroft An example of Karen’s inspiration is shown exceptionally through Taylor Howes’ project for The Meadowcroft. This is a vibrant family home full of warmth and colour. Taylor Howes had worked with the family on their London apartment and when they relocated back to the States, they asked the firm to work with them again to create a fabulous home. Understanding and working with its clients to think of every detail and make a home inspiring, but at the same time practical, is a big part of Taylor Howes. Once the firm has been through the learning curve of how its clients like to live as a family, it is then applied to the next project.

Right: Scale was important for The Meadowcroft project with its wonderful ceiling heights Below: Karen and her team enjoy using pattern and texture within their schemes

Another scheme where this ethos is applicable is Taylor Howes’ OKG Lateral project. Again, Karen and the firm had worked with the client on a couple projects prior to this, so the client trusted the firm to work with the space and layer it to create a glamorous and unforgettable interior. Scale was important for this project with wonderful ceiling heights. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Taylor Howes can have 25-30 projects on the go at any one time, and is looking forward to working on a holiday home in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi for one client, a complex house in Notting Hill, which comprises two listed houses joined together, and three fabulous show apartments near Regents Park. taylorhowes.com «

Alongside this, his prestigious client list includes celebrity and public figures including George Michael and Dame Judi Dench. A special sundial commission for the late Queen Mother’s 100th birthday, as well as bespoke projects for Royalty in Bahrain and Dubai, are amongst some of David’s most well-known pieces.

21 EXRATED

David’s garden art and installations, which he is most well-known for, have won the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Sundries Trophy five times and are gold trophy winners for the Design and Decoration awards. David Harber started his design journey by creating bespoke sundials, taking inspiration from the antique armillary sphere. David is credited with making sought after timepieces and is considered one of the few artisans to create sundials of such exquisite quality and craftsmanship. Since then, David Harber has been showcasing his original and masterful creations for over 20 years.

Evoking enchantment Together with a team of skilled craftsmen, David takes traditionally masculine and highly durable materials and skilfully crafts them into a more feminine form. He is constantly pushing the boundaries of creativity by striving to reinvent and reshape materials, techniques and shapes. Using materials such as stainless steel, stone, bronze and copper that are affected by the environment, David aims to create timeless sculptures or heirlooms that are designed to last and pass down through the generations. David’s work is derived from his fascination of light, shadow, science and nature and he strives to create beguiling interactions between reflection and illusion. Commenting on his work, David states: “My works often aim to evoke enchantment via a kind of sculptural playfulness, as if to invite the viewer to question what they see.”

For one project, David Harber worked with Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc to create a striking water feature. The brief was to have it serve as both a focal point and an unusual champagne cooler. David’s awardwinning chalice features two stainless steel mirrored hemispheres and as the water overflows, it clings to the surface creating the illusion that it is slowly revolving on its axis. This design was used as inspiration and the chalice was transformed into a substantial stone water feature, while the reservoir tank was adapted to house speakers for the bar’s sound system. Another piece of David’s most striking and best-loved designs is the Mantle. This spherical piece is made up of hundreds of bronze petals linked into a cellular latticework of turquoise verdigris. The underside of each leaf is gilded with gold leaf, giving the Mantle’s interior an ethereal golden glow. The Mantle has been used in a number of key commissions including a private client in Istanbul and inspiration for a bespoke commission in Chengdu, China. The Taurus is one David’s most mesmerising sculptures, an imposing convex curved surface in mirror

polished stainless steel that mirrors its own environment. A central ‘portal’ creates further connection to the natural environment and it can be made in a number of sizes from 100cm up to a grand 240cm diameter. The Taurus has been created for a number of private clients as well as a public space in Chengdu, China and for HSBC Bank. David is not only known for garden sculptures, he has developed his skills and expanded into interior sculpture and large public works for private homes, palaces and public institutions and increasingly is working on bespoke commissions abroad including the USA, the Middle East, Australia and Singapore. With a successful UK-based business that spans the globe from America to the Middle East, David Harber has retained a personal approach to his brand with a focus on the craftsmanship and continuing innovation of his creations at his Oxfordshire workshop. His studio is a reminder of how sculpture was once made – “By a visionary artistcraftsman in charge of an atelier, making art for patrons”. davidharber.co.uk «

A break with tradition The porter’s chair dates back to the Middle Ages of Medieval England. Produced of high-grade leather and red velvet, these chairs were designed with gatekeepers in mind. Over the years these chairs have retained their original form, however, many have received numerous contemporary transformations to keep up with modern-day interior aesthetics.

T

he porter’s chair, as the name suggests, was originally produced for gatekeepers who were in charge of screening guests in and out of the building. Due to the location of the chair, being situated so close to the front door, it was purposefully designed to envelop the gatekeeper. The shape, best described as a holllowed-out egg form, has a very high enclosed back that kept the gatekeepers relatively warm from the cold weather that would leak in through the front door. Today, the traditional chairs hold the same formation as they had in the 14th century, yet many have been adapted by modern-day designers to suit current aesthetic demands. Jimmie Martin is just one of these designers that has applied a contemporary stamp to these historic chairs. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Furniture and Interior Design Specialists, Jimmie Karlsson and Martin Nihlmar, are the playful designers behind the brand Jimmie Martin. The duo are best-known for bringing ‘the unthinkable to life’ through their elaborate designs. The pair have illustrated their unique ability through their various designs of the ultra-modern, yet traditionallyshaped porter’s chair. Jimmie Martin, as a studio, has a rare consistency that runs through its contemporary designs, each piece is created as a one-off piece. Although the studio avoids consistency throughout its designs, one main style that is evident throughout its designs is the use of graffiti. This design has been used on a number of pieces within the collection and is a popular choice with Jimmie Martin’s clients. The use of graffiti is exemplified on Jimmie Martin’s London studded porter’s chair where a use of leather, a lively turquoise velvet, industrial studs and a gold metallic spray paint has been applied to truly differentiate this design from other contemporary updates. Where it all began Jimmie Karlsson and Martin Nihlmar produced their first elaborate porter’s chair back in 2013 for an exhibition located in New York. Having considered tackling the porter’s chair previously, the duet sought after a truly eye-catching piece for this exhibition to showcase their creativity and skills. This resulted in a porter’s chair bejewelled in a luscious gold spray-painted design, accompanied with an intense studded embellishment which drew in crowds at the exhibition. Three years on, Jimmie and Martin have produced over 20 various designs of porter’s chairs, all commissioned for various clients with unique designs to complement and enhance the interior environment they are intended to inhabit. All designs are instantly attention-grabbing and have benefitted from trendy and stylish updates, featuring a play of ideas and quirky fabrics and finishes. A variety of upholstery fabric in various vibrant, energetic colours have been used to produce numerous designs throughout Jimmie Martin’s porter’s chair collection. One of these designs, known as the white

and purple porter’s chair, was injected into a residential scheme in London’s fashionable district, Soho. For this particular design the use of a vibrant purple velvet adorns these chairs contrasting with the white leather and white humble interior of the apartment, providing a statement focal point to the room. Jimmie Martin has modernised this historic chair with impeccable attention to detail held in each and every design. The studio approaches each design with considerations, aspects and details that enhance the chairs and make them stand-out to produce the ultimate eye-catching statement piece within an interior concept. The combination of ideas, from both Jimmie and Martin, have provided a place within modernday interior schemes for a more traditional piece that has benefitted from a contemporary update. These updated pieces lend themselves effortlessly as a statement piece within a contemporary interior scheme, becoming the focal point of a room and truly offering that wow factor. jimmiemartin.com « INEX-ONLINE.COM

Course of nature Architect, Román Izquierdo Bouldstridge, was commissioned to design a store front for maternity brand, Mit Mat Mama. Inspired by the feeling of walking through the pathways of the forest in the cemetery of Koyasan, the main concept was to create an atmosphere where products and architecture came together in a harmonious nature, filled with plants and natural light to improve the retail experience for Mit Mat Mama’s customers.

S

ituated within the ground floor of a 10-storey 1960s building, situated on Urgell Street in the Eixample district of Barcelona, Mit Mat Mama’s store comprises a 42m2 ground floor space alongside a 11m2 loft space. The previous space proved difficult to the expectant customers visiting the store and the brand wanted to improve the overall experience for its customers, enhancing the various lines of its collections sequentially to make all the options displayed within the store visible. The concept was to ‘connect the expectant natural moment of women with architecture’, and Roman’s brief was not only to design a store, but to also create a new shopping experience in a charming, natural and light atmosphere, generating a fluent interaction between people and space. The existing store With the existing store being closed off to the street, another premise of the brief was to extend the store onto the street, inviting the public into the store. The existing windows showcased colourless background boards and dummies along the facades that acted as a barrier, separating the outside from the inside. The brief required the new shop window be the shop itself and provide a welcoming, open atmosphere within the store. INEX-ONLINE.COM

The fitting rooms originally faced the facade and posters had been applied to the facade in order to provide privacy for the store’s customers. The clothes were displayed by conventional clothing racks and the illumination system consisted of three antiquated pendant lamps. The interior was almost claustrophobic, with some of the clothing displayed in a two metre high space underneath the loft. The brand was looking for something new, striking and modern that would provide a connection with its maternal customers. The first decision of the project was adapt the ground floor to INEX-ONLINE.COM

create an open-plan space with four metre high ceilings and a completely glazed facade. Services such as the fitting rooms, the cash desk and toilets were all joined together in a longitudinal line underneath the storage loft. A spiral staircase has been installed that allows access to the storage loft from the cash desk. On the upper floor, an invisible sliding door passes behind a large timber board, this emphasises the paleness of the staircase. The invisibility of the sliding door gives the visual appearance that the spiral staircase is a sculptural element that does not lead anywhere.

Storage solutions Several American ash timber ladders are the current focal point of Mit Mat Mama’s new store design. These ladders are prefabricated and had to be located to follow a perfect line, reflecting in the mirror at the end of the store’s path – this required a precise procedure. First, the ladder nearest to the mirror was located in a parallel relation. Thereafter, the ladder furthest away from the mirror was installed within the coordinates projected in the design. Three ropes tied to both ladders, in three various heights, were the references that allowed to make the installation as accurate

as possible. Lastly, the remaining ladders were totally aligned achieving the intended visual effect of the project. Timber has huge environmental benefits; is a natural, renewable, durable, biodegradable and a highly energy-efficient material. The use of American ash was selected for this particular project due to its high resistance, bright colour and environmental production properties. A prefabricated modular shelving system solved the required functions of the project, meeting the conditions of a low budget and a restricted construction timeline. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Clothing is now displayed on rails and shelves fixed between rows of the ash timber ladders – spaced approximately one metre apart. The ladders have a different function depending on the height that they are placed. Benches are placed across the first rung and a desk for the till sits across the second rung. At the third rung, the steel bars are used as clothing hangers. While at the fourth rung support the fitting room curtains. At higher-levels, the steel bars hold the plant pots and the lighting system in place. The flexibility of this system allows the store owners to modify the location of the steel bars and wood boards without altering the initial concept of the store. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Connecting to nature The use of plants within this retail scheme provides a natural character to the space and promotes the instinctive comfortable reaction of Mit Mat Mama’s customers. At the same time, the plants’ growth offers a temporal dimension to the store that relates to the constant changing reality of the unique customers; the interiors of the store change according to the seasons of the year, while the pregnancy status grows with the pass of the time. Plants also improve the air quality within the store by levelling humidity and absorbing dust. In addition to this, during the day the fast-growing, hanging plants filter sunlight and during the night they capture light from the artificial lighting system. The lemon tree, situated within the window of the store, was chosen for both conceptual and functional reasons. It is a tree that easily survives in indoor spaces and rarely grows more than four metres – which is the total store height. It is located in a place that receives

direct natural light in order to satisfy its necessities. The lemon tree produces its fruits almost the whole year and the flavour emanating from its leaves gives a sensory experience to the customers. The ivy is an indoor plant that can live in places without much natural light. This fastgrowing climbing plant aims to naturally expand itself through the ladders. Elsewhere, the schefflera gold is an indoor plant that can achieve heights of one to two metres, according to the vertical direction of the ladders. The flowering time is during Spring and Summer, while they produce fruits during Autumn and Winter. The three chosen plants harmoniously mix the deep green colour palette with a yellow stroke that brightens the eye. Opening up The vertical rhythm of the ladders, together with the hanging plants, generate a green path that leads to a great mirror that visually duplicates the store. This light and airy environment intends to provide the fluent shopping experience requested by the brand.

An important consideration for this project was designing the entrance door with the correct dimensions in order to place the lemon tree and two mirrors inside the store without difficulties. These mirrors were assembled accurately with the aim of having the appearance of being one, single mirror. At the same time, the wide entrance door’s dimensions facilitates an easy access for heavily pregnant women. The colour palette of the store is bright with the aim of highlighting the vivid colours of the textile products. The neutrality of white emphasises the green shades of the plants alongside the American ash of the ladders. It was very important to create an airy, natural and light space to make customers feel that they are in a non-stressful atmosphere.

The fitting rooms have been painted white and feature wooden hangers and a single stool, following the simplicity of the project. The fitting room is the shop itself; the mirror is located outside the fitting room in order to promote sharing ideas.

Above: The ladders have a different function depending on the height they are placed Right: American ash

Incorporating light The large quantity of light is not only created by the lumens projected, but also by multiplying this light by reflecting it through the white painted floor, wall and mirror. The white colour is the key of the lighting design due to the bright sensation it brings to the space. In addition to this, the transparent facade permits to capture as much natural light as possible, leading to a mix of artificial and natural light in the interior of the store. The store’s transparency leads to a direct connection to the street. Several wood benches expand the store to the outside, providing a public service to the city and inviting future clients to enter. Seen from the outside, the space is shown as a unique harmonious environment filled with textile products, plants and light. The railings that support the light focus are placed in various heights in order to satisfy the various required functions. The higher railings bring in the light that the interior hanging plants require and provide a global illumination, while the lower railings are focused to illuminate the clothing display. At the same time the lighting system follows the concept of the architecture of the store. The discontinuity of the installation creates a situation where the environment of the store changes with the movement of its customers. Sales have increased by 20% after the opening of the new store. This project has created a new identity to the brand that is reflected in the concept of its architecture. It is a concept that can be applied in other stores and expresses the beauty of pregnancy. romanizquierdo.com

34 CONSERVATORY

A room with a view Having worked with Vale Garden Houses in their previous home, the new owners of this 18th century former rectory wished to have another light filled space in their new home. They turned back to Vale to help them design a new conservatory and furnish the interior in a traditional style.

B

eing a Grade II listed building, Vale Garden Houses’ project involved careful consideration throughout all aspects of the extension. The client’s brief was to create a large day room accessing the gardens and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. Existing rooms within the house were linked by a long hall INEX-ONLINE.COM

incorporating the stairs to the first floor. The family’s hope was that an orangery, to the garden side of this long hallway, would help to integrate the wing of the house with the adjoining kitchen. The owners already knew of the benefits a glazed structure provides and wished to replicate this into their new home. The extension would form a multi-functioning

space that took advantage of the picturesque views out to the countryside. The room required divisions of space for different functions – dining, entertaining and relaxing. The owners wanted the design to be sympathetic to the main house, mirroring the Georgian-styling from the period of architecture.

Vale installed a unique roof system that combines timber with metal, which can achieve greater strengths and spans which incorporate double glazed units between fine glazing rafters. The visual advantages of this technically advanced roofing system was achieved without compromising on the desired traditional detail. These rooflights helped to provide the divisions of space internally and the larger central rooflight provides additional height internally to make it the focal point within the room. There was careful consideration to the shape of the conservatory as it had to fit with the clients’ criteria of linking one end of the house to the other. Considering the house is a Grade II listed building, the external shape had to reflect an adhesion to architectural requirements. The design needed both planning permission and listed consent. Windows and doors The design of the windows and doors mirror those from the main house being of Georgian detail. The main house also has timber sash windows and the owners wished to continue this traditional detail in the new structure. Vale produced traditional vertical balanced sliding sashes, containing individual double glazed units. Cast lead weights balance the windows with ropes and pulleys with the windows’ quality and attention to detail adding to the character of this orangery. The pitch on the glazed rooflights reflect that of the main house and the period detailing that has been achieved provides the orangery with a sense of belonging. Double doors were designed into the structure at either end of the orangery to open out to the patio areas. The central part incorporated folding doors,

which are extremely popular for widening the opening to the outside world and allowing for a smoother transition internally, out to the garden. The lighting scheme within the room consisted of dimmable down-lighters set within the roof framework which allowed for zoning and setting the mood for different occasions. Primary lighting was seen with three centrally positioned handmade star lanterns. Conservatory roof and side blinds were specified to help control the ambient room temperature and make the space more comfortable throughout the year. Blinds prove to be useful in the Winter months by preventing heat loss. INEX-ONLINE.COM

Interior aspects As this orangery was designed as a multi-purpose space the furniture selection had to reflect its use but also maintain a consistency in its style. The client wished to have a formal dedicated area for dining. The pieces chosen were handmade and traditionally upholstered. Hand-stitched curved dining chairs with a coordinated round dining table formed a space for socialising, with large sofas and chairs. At the adjacent end of the orangery sit two high back, fully upholstered chairs for enjoying those quiet moments and appreciating the surrounding views. to maintain a traditional look. The central sofas and chairs are Vale’s Imperia design which has a painted frame with a woven cane panel on the outside arm and a fully upholstered seat area. These handmade pieces are perfect for conservatories as they have the classic styling for a more formal look with the ‘lightness’ in appearance from the slender frame. Painted furniture in a conservatory is less likely to be damaged by the harmful rays from the sun, especially if a neutral base is chosen. The interior scheme requested by the client was to harmonise the interior with the views out to the garden. A palette of calming

greens and creams were chosen, incorporating a pretty floral pattern depicting hydrangea blossoms and a trellis design. These two patterns complement each other as they are both tonal and inspired by the external garden. The various textures within the room helps with the zoning of the various areas. The formality of the dining area has been achieved from the classic-style of the dining set with the fresh floral upholstery. The central area sees upholstered pieces with inviting, yet hard-wearing fabrics and in the quiet and relaxing area the two high back chairs sit wonderfully, covered in a darker shade of green which marries with the dark leaves in the floral pattern at the other end of the orangery. The exterior and interior concepts work together beautifully, as they are both very traditional. The overall scheme complemented the main house with quality, traditional pieces and a coordinated theme. valegardenhouses.com ÂŤ interiorsbyvale.com ÂŤ INEX-ONLINE.COM

39 AUDIOVISUAL

Taking control Tom Wright, Marketing Manager at Knightsbridge Audio Visual, talks to Inex about the various options available in today’s home automation market and how audiovisual systems can be integrated into your interior scheme without affecting interior surroundings – acting behind the scenes.

H

aving worked with a variety of control systems for full home automation systems, Knightsbridge Audio Visual (KAV London) is aware there are many aspects of audiovisual systems to consider from design, to specification, installation and ongoing maintenance. Today, home technologies can be integrated into one system for simple and remote control from the touch of a button. Lighting, sound systems, televisions, media servers, security alarms, cameras, blinds, door entry and much more can all centrally managed, integrated and controlled. Controlling home systems is also possible from a variety of interfaces. Touchscreen tablets are popular,

which can be discreetly installed into a wall or placed on a worktop or table. Alternatively, a range of mobile devices can be used, or a specifically designed wall panel or a smart remote control. With a control system, such as Control4, all the homeowners’ preferences will be programmed into an App or remote. As a result, they can easily access the functions from their favourite lighting scenes to security settings. Smart systems What’s more, programming functions allow features such as mockupancy. This is a term used for home automation systems to mimic homeowners’ standard use, while they are away. For example, setting a full alarm on the property and going

on holiday can automatically trigger mockupancy mode where the lights switch on and off, and the blinds open and close to the homeowners’ usual schedule. Custom programming also allows users to set features such as which lighting scenes come on at certain times of day. For example, when entering the kitchen during the day occupants are most likely to want a bright white scene for good visibility. However, for a late night visit to the fridge they will want a subtle and warm glow to light the way.

programmed to allow the user to control music selections and where the music played throughout the property. A separate control system, Lutron Homeworks QS, was installed to manage the lighting and automated blinds. However, the two control systems work in harmony meaning the lights and blinds can still be controlled by the Control4 touchscreens. This allows for various lighting scenes and functions to be programmed, as well as manual control from a number of wall-mounted switches and dimmers. Energy saving LED’s were also fitted throughout the property. Not only do these bulbs use a fraction of the energy, but also the warmth of the light can be controlled, from a very bright and clear white to a much softer and warmer white, more commonly associated with traditional halogen bulbs. One room that stands out in this project is the home cinema installation. A 137” curved screen, from Screen Research, which was fitted with a Bowers & Wilkins 7.2 surround sound system, built into the ceiling and walls. All control was programmed into the Control4 system, including the media library for video content as well as television access from a selection of channels and satellite providers. Complementing interior schemes Knightsbridge Audio Visual recently installed this audiovisual system for a luxury residential property in London. This is a prime example of how technology can be specified to complement the interior as well as providing a practical solution to home automation. Control4 is the primary control system that was used on this project. Wall-mounted

touchscreens allow access to multiple systems throughout the property. Firstly, music selection and control is managed by the home audio system, Sonos. Integrated in-ceiling speakers, from Bowers & Wilkins, as well as invisible plaster over speakers, from Amina, were then installed in many of the living areas and bedrooms to deliver high quality sound. A series of separate zones were

Hidden talent The majority of these systems are completely hidden from view. This is an important step of designing a home automation system. It is recommended that audiovisual companies are brought in early on new developments to ensure the wiring and fittings are in place from the construction stage. With the majority of the hardware fitted into an AV rack and quietly tucked away, all media boxes, routers and drivers work from behind the scenes. The result is a beautifully designed home where the technology simply works with your lifestyle. kav.london «

Five-star flooring solutions Darnton House is everything you could want from a specialist nursing home; a state-ofthe-art building with a welcoming interior and a team dedicated to delivering the highest quality of care. Amtico has provided a luxurious flooring solution for this purpose-built, 96bed nursing home that goes beyond environments often associated with nursing homes.

D

arnton House is owned and run by L&M Healthcare, whose Managing Director, Jeanne Davies, has personal involvement in the product selection for the company’s care homes. For the interior scheme at Darnton House, Red Apple Design focused on creating a stylish, contemporary finish that would echo a 5-star residence and, in doing so, moving away from the clinical and sterile environment often associated with UK care homes. Building contractor, DBS, which has worked on previous projects for this client, was commissioned for the development, which has an overall size of 5850m2. DBS was focused on creating a stylish and contemporary finish that would echo a 5-star residence. The flooring solution With Darnton House seeking a high-quality flooring solution, offering the realism of its existing floor, as well as meeting the required practical benefits, Amtico’s Cirrus Mist and Script Maple Silver flooring was used throughout Darnton House’s reception area, library, internal corridors, dining room and meeting rooms. INEX-ONLINE.COM

The flooring chosen for Darnton House needed to help create a luxurious and contemporary interior, one that would enable the residents to feel that they were living somewhere truly special. This feeling of style and individuality was achieved by using two wood products from Amtico’s LVT collection, Signature – Cirrus Mist and Script Maple Silver. For the light and welcoming entrance and reception area, Cirrus Mist was specified in a stripwood laying pattern with a border. This design combines soft sandy greys with a pearl shimmer that adds a touch of luxury to the nursing home and complements the light blue accents and subtle tones used throughout the ground floor. This choice of flooring provided Darnton House with an upmarket,

hotel-like luxury feel. The Cirrus design in particular, with its reflectiveness, creates a welcoming space that almost shimmers when approached and acts as an eye-catching alternative to flooring options on offer at many other nursing homes or healthcare establishments.

Durability There was a durability requirement that Amtico had to consider for Darnton House’s flooring solution, particularly within the eating areas within the care home. Considerations had to be paid to the dining equipment – tables and chairs – that would be dragged across the new flooring. The product needed to be easy to clean, as with any busy high traffic area – and especially in health and nursing facilities there can be a number of fluids spilt or leaked. Having a wipe clean surface is a bonus for the eradication of smells and bacteria. Both products, Cirrus Mist and Script Maple Silver, offer the care home a 20 year commercial wear warranty and both wood products offer a generous 1mm wear layer, providing the care home with a good looking flooring solution that performs to the highest standards of durability and maintenance. Aesthetics With both Cirrus Mist and Script Maple Silver tiles and planks holding the ability to be placed in a pattern of Darnton House’s choice, a Stripwood laying pattern was selected for the flooring solution. This is a classic laying pattern which echoes traditional floors, with the direction of the pattern highlighting the detail within the grain. Contrasting with the white linen of the dining room and enhancing the bold feature wall within the dining area, sits the Script Maple Silver wood design with its silver contour lines that glimmer and add definition. Furthermore, it has complemented the chair backs and banquette seating, which have been upholstered in a leather with the same rich chocolatey tones.

Careful considerations Darnton House’s entrance hall is now a
space that captivates its audience immediately and makes the existing, and future residents, feel at ease and at home – alongside the residents’ families. The interior needed to not only be of a high-quality and showcase a wow factor, but also needed to induce a feeling of calmness and serenity. Visitors to Darnton House are either potentially parting with a loved one, or moving in themselves and this first impression needed to be of the highest quality. Amtico’s flooring solution offers a clean, fresh feel to the space, while rejecting the limitations that a traditional care home aesthetic conjures. Amtico has contributed to Darnton House being a place residents can enjoy.

Designed for the discerning home owner, these additions to the Express portfolio reveal innovations in glazing design.

M

arket trends for glazing have changed in recent years, with an increase in popularity for opening up our homes to the outdoors. Homeowners seem to be dreaming of an ‘al fresco’ lifestyle that bridges the gap between the indoors and outdoors, as we spend more of our time socialising and entertaining. This trend looks set to stay with an uplift in sales of sliding doors as people choose to maximise existing space as opposed to moving house. Companies like Express Bi-folding Doors, one of the UK’s industry leaders, are now able to offer aspirational products at realistic prices as they are manufactured in-house in the UK, which has helped make formerly unrealistic homes a viable prospect. Steve Bromberg, General Manager at Express, explains why sliding doors are a popular choice: “As a result of home improvement programmes, INEX-ONLINE.COM

people are getting more confident with house renovations and are considering products that would previously have been viewed as aspirational. Glazing products are increasingly popular as they flood natural light into homes throughout the year, creating the illusion of additional space. “Sliding doors are a particularly popular choice because you can slide them open without taking up any internal or external space. This essentially makes your garden an extension of the house, but is also more family-friendly as there are less obstacles.” New for 2016 are Express’ latest innovations in sliding door design; the XP Slide Panoramic and HiFinity Panoramic Sliding Door. Both encompass a contemporary design with minimal framework and maximum glass to truly exploit the outdoor view. With a premium architectural design, the XP Slide Panoramic is one

of the most sleek sliding door systems to date. Designed so the aluminium frame is almost entirely flush with the wall, the door offers near-frameless views and allows light to flood into the home. The visible profiles at the head and foot of the door are only 35mm. The exclusive Hi-Finity Panoramic Sliding Door can be either manually or electronically operated, giving it a premium edge over similar sliding door systems for world first innovation and the ultimate wow factor. This particular door is structurally glazed, meaning the structure of the door lies within the glass itself and not the surrounding framework. This makes it possible for the aluminium frame to be exceptionally thin. These designs are in addition to Express’ existing collection of stunning sliding doors. British Gypsum launches revolutionary BIM waste estimator In a first for the UK dry lining market, British Gypsum has introduced a waste estimator tool which helps drive out construction waste by enabling early decisions to be made around material selection. The tool uses a direct output from a building information model (BIM) file, allowing customers to identify waste during the building design phase and reduce surplus quantities of material at the start of a project. Once users have uploaded individual British Gypsum partition specifications into a Revit model, the estimator recommends plasterboard lengths to generate a customised ‘shopping list’ of products in line with the BIM data, while minimising excess material. british-gypsum.com/white-book-system-selector 0115 945 1000 INEX-ONLINE.COM
