The new AC EZ Touch LG has also launched a new controller for its commercial air conditioning and heating products. The new AC EZ Touch offers Smart management with a 5in colour LCD touchscreen for small sites and provides group and individual control. It can be scheduled weekly or yearly and has a total or partial individual controller lock. There’s a power consumption monitor with Pdi, an ‘emergency stop’ and total ‘on/off’ control. You can set two set points – cooling and heating – on each indoor unit with an ‘auto change over’ setting – for heat recovery only. Users can control each space efficiently through an IP network, but access via smartphones is not available with this unit. As with other LG controllers, statistics of operational status – time and power consumption – are provided to help make intelligent system operation decisions. The alarm indicator operates when there are errors, or if it’s time to change the oil or filters. There’s plenty of information available about these new products from LG, find out more by visiting LG’s website.

Therma V high temperature heat pump added to LG’s ASHP range LG has received MCS approval for its Therma V high temperature heat pump. This makes the unit available for the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme (RHI) with immediate effect.
T
his model of the popular Therma V range of air to water heat pumps from LG can deliver hot water at up to 80°C for cascade dual refrigerant cycles of R410a and R134a, and up to 65°C for single refrigerant high temperature systems. The new high temperature version of the unit is ideal for projects where replacement of an older heating system with an air source heat pump is required and other energy efficiency measures are not possible or feasible. The LG high temperature unit is ideal for combining with hot water cylinders or thermal stores and has already been successfully linked with other renewable technologies, including solar PV. A new installation should see the
current tariff of 7.51p per kWh of renewable heat generated paid by the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme, paid quarterly for seven years from the date of installation. “Selecting the right air to water heat pump is about carefully thinking through the lifestyle requirements of the home in which it will be installed,” says Kamlesh Vadukul, Heating Sales Manager for LG. “If you need the security of almost instant response, the high temperature ASHP is the one to choose. They’re not hugely more expensive than the low temperature units and are the lowest priced high temperature units available in the marketplace. People who have them installed already, use them very much like boilers and they respond to that kind of use. The key to success is to get the heating system design right at the outset. Build the lifestyle requirements into a hardware design that delivers.” In modern homes, it’s common to see heating demand halved and hot water demand tripled – so high temperature air source heat pumps are ideal in this scenario – perfect for many refurbishment projects and spot on for new-build properties. “The way homes are built these days is very different and the issues we face have changed hugely,” says Kamlesh. “Achieving MCS accreditation gives us a huge competitive advantage and a range of new options that we know work, that are cost-effective and energyefficient and that, importantly, allows installers to combine renewable technologies in a way that they haven’t been able to before.” The LG Therma V high temperature air source heat pump has been a huge eye-opener to a couple who had the first unit installed in their home. They had got used to over 20 years of heat on demand using a traditional boiler and used to the ease of having gas through the mains. There was concern initially

about how responsive the air source heat pumps would be to deliver heat and hot water when it was needed. But, with the latest ‘high temp’ system from LG, they say they shouldn’t have worried: “It’s not a flippant remark,” says Paul Davies, “but the heat pump is up and running and commissioned, and the biggest complement I can pay it is that we don’t actually notice the difference! It’s pretty rapid to respond – we’d heard stories about having to switch the thing on several hours before you needed hot water – but that’s just not the case. You quickly adjust to the new kit and it’s been excellent for us since we moved in and got it up and running.” 8 partner.lge.com/uk

Demand-controlled ventilation by Renson
Images: Below: Since 1909, Renson has developed and manufactured innovative products and solutions, which improve the living conditions of people and at the same time cut energy costs Below left: Renson’s demand-controlled ventilation system with the Healthbox ensures the house is optimally ventilated, according to the resident’s activities
For several years, Renson has been developing very successful ventilation systems. Its demand-controlled ventilation system with the Healthbox ensures the house is optimally ventilated, according to the resident’s activities. This ventilation system really can help homes reduce their energy consumption whilst creating a healthy indoor environment.
R
enson’s demand-controlled ventilation system combines the constant supply of fresh air through selfregulating vents and the extraction on-demand of polluted air thanks to the central extraction unit, Healthbox. Dynamic sensors measure the extraction air 24 hours a day on CO2 or humidity and/or VOCs and adapt the ventilation level to the needs of the residents in an intelligent way. In this way, the system makes a healthy indoor environment possible.
Operate without errors
The Healthbox is installed in an unused corner in the attic or in a technical room. In the kitchen, bathroom, toilet or any other room where the polluted air is extracted, the user only sees an aluminium design vent. The fan is calibrated fully automatically and regulates itself so as to achieve the exact extraction capacity for each room. This avoids the risk of adjustment errors, thereby ensuring a properly working ventilation system with a proper flow rate in each room.
This automatic calibration also leads to significant time savings, as installation takes only a couple of minutes.

Introducing DCM-PRO – the fastest to install, heated decoupling system The DCM-PRO floor heating system from Warmup is the fastest solution for the installation of a heated decoupling system in all areas. The innovative, new system from Warmup allows for quick and easy installation of electric underfloor heating.
T
he system comprises a self-adhesive castellated membrane and a heating cable. Once installed, DCM-PRO can easily be covered with a range of floor finishes. The self-adhesive layer of the DCMPRO Mat acts as a self-healing decoupling layer, eliminating the need for additional fixings and laborious installation methods, significantly reducing both installation time and costs. Unlike traditional fabricbased decoupling layers which tear upon movement, the patent pending self-healing decoupling layer contracts and expands to deal with seasonal changes, preventing damage occurring from gaps and cracks in the subfloor. Rated as high performance,
DCM-PRO is proven to protect tiled floors from cracking (ANSI 118.12:5.4). DCM-PRO installs in minutes, its selfadhesive backing attaches directly to the subfloor, meaning there is no need to mix additional tile adhesive to affix the mat to the subfloor, and no wasted time waiting for the base layer of tile adhesive to dry before installing the cable. Saving both time and money during the installation process. A self-levelling compound can be poured directly onto the DCM-PRO System, allowing it to heat and protect any floorcovering material that is considered as suitable for use with UFH, including tiles, laminate, engineered wood, vinyl and carpet. The pre-spaced channels on the mat make
it quick and easy to evenly space and lay the heating cable, so there is no need to spend time measuring and calculating the correct spacing to output ratio for projects. The DCM-PRO Cable is durable and highly-flexible, providing maximum reliability during installation. Once installed, the system is easy to tile over. You can apply tile adhesive directly onto the system, providing the perfect surface to lay tiles directly on top with no risk of any damage to the heater. During installation, the unique design of the mat means the cable is also safe from mechanical damage caused by stepping on the system with heavy boots on, or the impact from trowels when tiling, meaning there is a reduced risk of installation failures. The patent pending self-healing decoupling layer protects floorcoverings from damage. It contracts and expands to deal with seasonal changes in subfloors and prevents damage from occurring to floorcoverings due to gaps and cracks in the subfloor caused by expansion and contraction. In line with Warmup’s practice of offering the best warranties and guarantees, the DCMPRO Cable comes complete with a lifetime warranty and SafetyNet Installation guarantee when installed with the DCM-PRO Mat. Renewable heating installation delivers heating and passive cooling Finn Geotherm has completed a landmark installation for leading European agricultural plant breeder, RAGT Seeds, to deliver both heat and passive cooling with significant energy savings.
R
AGT’s initial brief was to reduce the heating costs for its six glasshouses, which are used for developing new crops. LPG had previously been used to heat the glasshouses which, with a U-value of around six, meant the boiler was in constant use in winter, leading to issues with fuel supply and heat distribution as the system couldn’t
keep up with the heat being generated. RAGT needed a new system to work with its existing grow tubes. Finn Geotherm installed three Lämpöässä T120 ground source heat pumps linked to three Akvanti 2400 litre thermal stores with a network of 21,000m of collector loop. Controlled using Trend building management,
the 350kW ground source heat pump totally replaces RAGT’s previous LPG system. While specifying ground source for RAGT’s heat requirements, Finn Geotherm identified an opportunity to utilise the new system to deliver air circulation and cooling. This would ensure a constant temperature all year round for crops to thrive in. Glasshouses had been known to reach 45°C (compared to the target temperature of 21-22°C) and low level techniques, such as painting windows and using fans, were ineffective. However, the implementation of a cooling system had to be very carefully developed to ensure the system did not impact negatively on the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) available to RAGT Seeds for the ground source heat pump installation. Finn Geotherm’s team of experts devised a bespoke passive cooling system to circulate air at ambient ground temperature from the ground loop. Cool air is circulated through 24 Jaga AVS fan coil units (four per glasshouse) using a control system which activates if the temperature increases by 1°C from target. Passive cooling delivers the reduced temperatures needed by RAGT in summer using minimal energy. Air circulation from the cooling system has made a significant impact too, providing a ‘gentle summer breeze’ in the glasshouses. Along with the better regulated temperature, RAGT is also now enjoying enhanced plant growth and expects to reduce chemical inputs. Steve Brown, Operations and Production Manager at RAGT Seeds, said: “The ground source heat pump system is delivering everything we hoped at a lower energy cost than expected. The quality of workmanship throughout the job was exceptional, with obvious care and pride being put into every aspect of the installation. We fully expect the system to make a huge contribution to our energy efficiency and to improve our glasshouse productivity, as well as dramatically reducing our emissions and enabling a reduced use of chemical fungicides. Gaining these benefits, with the expectation of significant RHI income over the next 20 years, makes this a very successful project which we hope to replicate at other sites.” 8 www.finn-geotherm.co.uk * info@finn-geotherm.co.uk ( 01953

AECOM report – continuous flow up to 7% more cost-effective AECOM, a major global player in the building engineering services consultancy arena, has concluded a report showing that continuous flow water heating systems have a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs, as well as life-cycle costs over 20 years when compared with stored hot water systems.
T
he study shows that continuous flow water heating systems can be up to 7% more economical than equivalent ‘traditional’ stored hot water systems. AECOM was commissioned to carry out a life cycle study on continuous flow water heating systems, and to provide a comparison with conventional storage systems. Two case studies were provided that are based on projects using continuous flow water heating systems. AECOM then determined an equivalent storage-based system for each case study and compared operational and capital costs. For the life cycle comparison, the analysis period was 20 years, based on the expected service life. The net present value (NPV) calculation is based on a discount rate of 3.5% (The Green Book – HM Treasury), an inflation rate of 2% for servicing costs and projected retail fuel costs from DECC1. In both case studies, the continuous flow
system showed a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs, as well as life-cycle costs over 20 years, with the continuous flow system consistently lower in energy use than the two storage systems.
This was a system for a typical, small, prefabricated fast-food restaurant. It is assumed the system only serves the hot water demand. The life-cycle analysis includes the initial capital costs, projected annual fuel costs and estimated annual servicing costs, which are assumed to increase by 2% each year. The annual fuel cost assumes the same daily fuel consumption over the whole year. The servicing cost is based on £130/year per boiler, and £160/year for a boiler and cylinder. The resulting net present values of the three showed that the continuous flow system is 6-7% lower than the two storage systems based on that 20-year analysis period.
water at 40°C.The risk of legionella is overcome by regular flushing of the system. For the energy required to deal with the instantaneous hot water demand, the analysis assumes that the bulk of the hot water demand would be due to the showers. Each shower would typically have a flow rate of around 9 litres per minute, which, if mixed to 40ºC, would equate to an instantaneous load of around 19 kW each, so even if there was only one shower running, the load on a single continuous flow water heater would equate to an efficiency of 95% based on the performance curve. As the hot water demand increases, the modular nature of this particular configuration would allow the 95% efficiency to be maintained for the bulk of the demand. The difference in daily fuel costs between the three systems is around 7%.The usage profile for this case study is particularly suited to continuous flow systems (i.e. high, but infrequent demand over the day), which is why there is an advantage in fuel consumption over the storage systems.
Case study two
Images:
Case study one
This was a system for a shower block in a holiday camp, with six showers and four basin taps. For the continuous flow option, the analysis is based on a configuration of four continuous flow water heaters that each have a nominal output of 48 kW. For this particular application, because there is a very short run of pipework between the water heaters and the fixtures, it is possible for the water heaters to generate

technology, low carbon and low NOx levels and pluming reduced to almost invisible levels. Combined with ease of installation and maintenance, it makes the QuanTec boilers the homeowner’s and installer’s choice. The Which? report stated:“It has the best reliability record of any brand in the survey and a good customer score too.” Included in the range is Johnson & Starley’s flagship model, the HR28C, with integral Passive Flue Gas Heat Recovery. Currently no other manufacturer can compete with the HR28C in size and performance, making it possibly the most efficient boiler in the world.
Johnson & Starley’s QuanTec HR28C is the latest innovation for combi boilers. Exceptional efficiency in gas consumption is achieved by the full heat condense heat exchanger which incorporates a domestic hot water (DHW) preheating function. 8 www.johnsonandstarley.co.uk

Sustainable heating from the sea in Stromness The Warehouse Buildings – Orkney Islands Council’s multipurpose facility in Stromness – are the first in the islands to be fitted with a sea-source heat pump, which uses warmth absorbed from Stromness harbour to provide heating for the buildings.
M
onitoring over a 12-month period shows this to be a cost-effective choice for the offices, which house the town’s library and customer services team, and provide a work base for staff from a variety of council services. It also means that the Warehouse Buildings produce substantially less greenhouse gas emissions than if a more conventional source of heat was used. The sea-source heating system from UK-based ground source heat pump manufacturer, Kensa Heat Pumps, has a number of components. Coils of pipes fixed to 12 stainless steel platforms, known as ‘pond-mats’, are sunk beneath a nearby pier and draw heat from the surrounding water. The pipes feed this to a Kensa plant room

ground source heat pump, which elevates the temperature of the water supplied to radiators and an underfloor heating system to 55°C – sufficient to keep the Warehouse Buildings comfortably warm. The cost of the electricity used to run the 40kW heat pump was £1550 over the 12-month period, compared to £2420 for an oil-based system. Greater savings will result should the price of heating oil increase from its currently low level. The carbon emissions linked to keeping the Warehouse Buildings warm are calculated to be six tonnes of CO2 per year, compared to more than 15 tonnes if an oil boiler had been fitted.
