Designed by architect Structural Interiors and fitted out using materials supplied almost exclusively by SaintGobain’s UK manufacturing businesses, the venue demonstrates how products and systems work together in practice, as well as highlighting many of the latest innovations available to architects and construction professionals in the UK. Step inside the Saint-Gobain Innovation Centre and the aesthetic appeal of its solutions is immediately apparent.

From the natural warmth of timber to the bespoke design of wall panels and contemporary finish of surfaces, the company offers a wide range of products designed to add style and flair to any project.

The curved reception desk and floating staircase are constructed using Glulam, available from engineered timber specialist Pasquill. Glulam, or Glued Laminated Timber as it is also known, is an exceptionally strong material, with its tensile characteristics making it ideally suited for long-span, load-bearing widths.

A laminated composition consisting of three layers of glazing, Cracked Ice features a shattered layer of toughened glass safely encased by two layers of float or toughened SEKURIT glass. Given that toughened glass never shatters in the same way, every piece of Cracked Ice is unique. The resulting mosaic pattern creates stunning visual impact, enhancing and complementing interior design schemes by adding visual impact and colour.

The path to sustainability A

permeable paving solution from Brett Landscaping delivered an effective sustainable drainage solution to the social housing development in Pontefract, for a comparable cost to traditional paving.

A feasibility study confirmed that a permeable pavement was the most cost effective solution because the high density of the housing project precluded alternative SuDS devices such as swales and ponds which require additional land take.

Brett Landscaping was asked by Jack Lunn to devise a suitable solution and, following initial site investigations, determined that the permeability of the sub-grade was good enough to allow surface water resulting from rainfall in the area to infiltrate totally into the subgrade.

Permeable paving from Brett Landscaping has been specifically designed to provide manageable, environmentally-friendly surface water management systems that are fully SuDScompliant. Permeable paving meets the requirements of landscapers in terms of the fast dispersal of water from surfaces, as well as the removal of pollutants before the water is drained into the soil.

The permeable pavior selected was Omega Flow from Brett Landscaping – 80mm for the roads and 60mm for driveways – whose classic rectangular profile and purpose designed nibs ensure optimum permeability in addition to an eye-catching contemporary aesthetic.

Unlike other surface water management and attenuation systems, the use of permeable paving enables the structure to capture up to 95% of pollutants within the surface water run-off.

Stump Cross is an ambitious project built by contractor Jack Lunn Construction for developer Synergy Housing.

Due to an existing drainage infrastructure already working close to capacity – and therefore unable to cope with additional run-off – Wakefield Metropolitan District Council demanded that a Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) be incorporated into the access road to Stump Cross.

Aesthetic appeal Brett designed a permeable paving solution for the site using its PermCalc software, which assesses projects based on calculations of variables such as rainfall, traffic volumes and land composition to determine the appropriate sub-base composition. These design suggestions were then submitted to Wakefield Metropolitan District Council for approval.

Sustainability in Development Rob Martin, Marketing Manager at Jack Lunn Construction, said a close working relationship from an early stage with Brett helped ensure the project ran smoothly – and came in at a comparable cost to traditional paving.

One particular benefit was that there was no need for traditional road drainage on the site, which helped to reduce additional groundwork during construction. This ensures that the overall cost of the project came in approximately the same as they would have been for constructing a conventional pavement.

Refreshing alternative of the water leaving the site and is a key feature of a true SuDS system.

Based on the PermCalc design, Brett Landscaping recommended the use of a series of containment dams running across the carriageway to compartmentalise the road into individual permeable pavements. This helps to prevent the surface water flowing to the bottom of the site and flooding the lower houses on the development during periods of heavy rainfall.

Brett also worked with Jack Lunn to design a service strip which fed the individual plots with gas water and electricity.

“Permeable paving is often seen as being a significant departure from conventional pavement construction incurring more time and, inevitably, more costs,” says Rob Martin. “However, working closely with Brett Landscaping on the design and construction of the permeably paved areas on this site, we found that it was no big deal, just a bit different from normal pavement construction.”

The section 38 officer from WMDC who approved the designs prior to construction confirmed that the authority would take legal ownership of the road upon completion of the initial 12 month maintenance period.

Drainage management PermCalc can also be used to create different proposals based upon the likelihood of severe weather in order to produce a design that will withstand and safely manage the passage of water in a ‘worst case scenario.’ The design methodology of PermCalc also enables users to input an excess based on anticipated future changes, reflecting the importance to planners of climate change in long-term drainage management.

Crucially, PermCalc undertakes a range of tasks automatically for the most comprehensive design suggestion of a project. Unlike alternative permeable pavement design methodologies, Brett Landscaping believes it is essential to advise on potentially ‘hidden’ aspects that can affect the performance of a permeable

paving solution since no site is a truly isotropic plane.

“Slopes, adjacent roofs, additional nonpermeable areas around the perimeter of a site – all of these factors can alter the flow of water, it is therefore crucial that architects and developers provide a full picture of the site layout,” confirms Andrew Gill. “Users are prompted at each stage to enter all relevant site information, this is then factored in to the PermCalc calculation process to create the optimal design suggestion.”

At the end of the design process, PermCalc provides the user with fully costed design suggestions for the project.

This enables planners to gain an accurate comparison with non-permeable solutions. Most importantly, designs can then be edited so that users can tweak volumes and prices to suit their specific requirements and create various differing scenarios.

In order to fully support PermCalc within the market Brett Landscaping can now also offer three levels of free training to design consultants and local authority personnel, ranging from how to use Brett PermCalc to ‘permeable pavement design, construction, adoption and maintenance.’

Since the building envelope is rarely made entirely by a single contractor, different elements from different subcontractors end up at a variety of metal finishers, all using different pre-treatment processes and different makes of paint or powder.

Specifications for the majority of components of a building are strictly defined and rightly so. From the original architect drawings to the last sub-contractor in the supply chain, the specifications are adhered to and the resulting structure is as the architect and owner intended. Richard Besant, Sales and Marketing Director of Powdertech, highlights the importance of seeing specification through to the end.

Frequently the specification for the metal finish, be it anodising, plating, painting or powder coating, is so loosely defined that some of the qualities and characteristics envisaged by the owner, particularly those of durability, are never realised.

Terms such as ‘equal or equivalent to’ are often used in the specifications for this

pecifications cite tried and tested products, processes and, importantly, those that meet international standards.

Specifications are an essential and highly important part of the building tender document and the final contract.

Yet it appears that as the final layer of the building is reached, the importance given to the specifications rapidly diminishes. This is strange and seemingly

Retaining focus

As an end result the building fails to achieve a uniform appearance with variances in the colour, gloss level and crucially the durability of the finish. A desire for short-term cost savings means that smaller components such as window cills and flashings are often finished to a lower quality, but this is a prime example of false economy. If these elements are peeling and corroding within 4-5 years the building will begin to look unsightly and need maintenance, irrespective of the main cladding having a lifespan of over 25 years. Other false economies arise; the project brief may have specified a rigorously tested aluminium system but left the coating poorly specified, resulting in the high performance metal being coated with low-grade materials.

The thousands of pounds spent on technically advanced aluminium are squandered through using a coating that will not provide adequate long term protection. In the worst cases, corroded elements will become a structural weak

Metal finishers can do a lot to help this process by ensuring that they have their product and process details in a ‘BIM ready’ format to be loaded into the system as required. Once a job has been completed it will become imperative to record all the details of pre-treatment and coating chemicals used, quality checks and test results, powder manufacturers, colour references, gloss levels and so on so that these can be fed back into the BIM model for future maintenance of the building.

Metal finishing companies, including anodisers, platers, wet paint sprayers and powder coaters need to determine how they can best support their customers with regard to BIM and they, in turn, need feedback from customers to discover what is and isn’t working. Many of the well-established coating companies have directors sitting on regulatory committees, standards bodies and industry organisations and as such they can assist in helping the industry as it strives to move forward in ever better documentation and recording of the process and products that end up on the external face of every building we see.

point and time consuming and costly repairs will be needed.

Clear vision Loose specifications can result in confusions and discrepancies in the coating stated on different documents.

Order forms have been known to disagree entirely with the original drawing annotations and time is wasted (at a point when time is in short supply) going back up through the specification chain to determine which is the actual finish required. Further on in the life of the building, when new parts or repairs are needed, no one is clear as to the exact colour, shade or gloss level that has been used on various components. Serious delays to a refurbishment or extension project occur whilst documentation is tracked down.

All of these issues indicate that there is an urgent need for more rigorous specification of metal finishing at the start of a project, and strict record keeping by metal finishers on completion of the job.

Not before time, the increasing adoption of BIM (Building Information Modelling) across the industry is starting to drive this change. A BIM model will show the virtual equivalents of every part used to build a building, with associated reference data.

The requirement to feed electronically available information into a BIM programme for every aspect, including metal finishing, should mean than that the coating specification is treated more seriously and becomes better defined.

HVAC The position regarding the phase-out and eventual ban on R22 was explained in detail and the tenants together with Land Securities were offered a number of options for renewal or replacement.

In addition, Land Securities decided to completely refurbish the 7th floor with a new design and layout.

Increased building capacity 330 Holborn Gate is an impressive nine-storey, glassfronted office building, in a prime business location in London. Space Airconditioning, the Guildford-based Daikin Distributor, was specified to supply what is probably the UK’s largest installation of Daikin’s R22 replacement VRVQ air conditioning systems as part of a recently-completed major refurbishment.

S

pace Airconditioning had supplied and been closely involved with the building’s original R22 based Daikin VRV systems and held comprehensive data on the original installation. This information greatly assisted M&E Consultants BWS of Epsom, acting on behalf of the client Land Securities, when it came to considering replacement air conditioning system designs.

Daikin’s unique VRVQ system, specifically designed to enable existing interconnecting pipework to be retained, became an increasingly attractive proposition from operating efficiency, cost saving, expediency and minimising occupant disruption aspects. Space Air technician’s carried out a detailed survey of the existing pipework and declared it suitable for VRVQ to be applied.

Project support John Noad (Building Environment Ltd) was appointed as the main M&E Contractor and they in turn subcontracted the installation of the Daikin VRVQ systems to a Space Air approved installation specialist. Space Air also

provided full project management support throughout the installation and commissioned the systems as they were completed.

Mike Nankivell, Space Air’s Marketing and Business Development Director was in attendance when the 35 new VRVQ condensing units were lifted into position, an operation, that had to be conducted with military precision due to restricted crane and vehicle access.

The Existing VRV equipment scheduled for decommissioning and removal in stages included 35 No R22 Heat Recovery Condensing Units serving seven floors, 300 Floor mounted FXYL indoor units each with a BS Box and remote controller, 2 No Centralised Controllers per floor.

Land Securities let the building to various tenants on a leasehold basis, with floors 4,5 & 6 being occupied by the same tenant, Chime. The 7th floor was unoccupied. The issue for Land Securities was that the leasehold agreement with Chime was due for renewal. The tenant was made aware that the existing VRV systems were operating with the regulated ODS refrigerant HCFC R22.

Minimal disruption The unoccupied 7th floor was the first part of the project. This was completely refurbished which allowed the development of a new bulkhead design in the central core areas. This meant that Daikin’s slim ducted units (FXDQ) could be selected and conditioned air distribution could be improved throughout the floor.

For the occupied floors 4, 5 & 6, considerations for risk to business from disruption during the refurbishment works were paramount as well as cost.

VRVIII-Q was put forward as the best option because of the potential to re-use large amounts of the existing refrigeration pipework and thereby minimising disruption for the occupants of the offices.

Space Air carried out comprehensive surveys of the existing systems to ensure feasibility of the VRVIII-Q product.

Detailed survey reports submitted to the client included equipment costings, efficiency comparisons and run cost projections for VRVQ vs. the original installation.

Hotel Building Focus are helping them to create buildings that imitate nature. Roof gardens are a great example of biophilic design, as are ‘living walls’, which provide growing environments for plant life as well as habitats for wildlife.

Sustainable retreat Following on from this, the concept of biophilic design is now also providing inspiration to the architecture of hotels, which are, like many businesses, being adapted in-line with a much more sustainable, self-sufficient way of living.

When it comes to hotel design, it goes without saying that the interior concept needs to emphasise a warm, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for customers, and biophilic design allows for the creation of a peaceful retreat for those looking to escape from the rush of everyday life. By utilising patterns which reflect the colour and texture of natural entities, such as grass, bark and stone, biophilic design can help to create a pervading sense of calm and opulence for all hotel guests.

So, where to begin when introducing elements of biophilic design into hotel environments? The floor provides an ideal opportunity, as it offers a canvas on

For many years, artists, scientists and designers have understood the important role that biophilic design can play in influencing our physical, psychological

and emotional well-being, and as such, we can see its influences across the world in commercial environments. Increasingly, designers are looking for ways to bring nature indoors and to work it into the aesthetics and materials of furniture and appliances.

For many years, Interface has been looking to the natural world for inspiration when designing its products and has applied the principles of biomimicry, using nature as its inspiration. Through this concept, the company has created non-directional flooring, where each tile is unique and maintains a randomness of pattern however it is laid. Interface looked at the way in which nature provides a floorcovering, and just as with fallen leaves caught by the wind, the company’s tiles have been created to replicate this random design. This natural patterning lends itself to a more sustainable method of installation by minimising waste. In addition to this, the tiles are laid nondirectionally which makes for a faster installation time and increases flexibility of design.

The main benefit of this type of floorcovering is that individual tiles can be replaced quickly should the need arise.

For instance, should there be a spillage on the floor, the tiles that have been affected – and not the carpet as a whole – can be replaced quickly and easily, with little or no down-time required for the hotel.

Intrinsic connection Creating an interior environment that evokes the outside world can help to reestablish that vital connection between humans and nature. And even simple measures, such as installing plants, letting in more daylight or giving staff access to views of nature can have profound physical, psychological and social benefits, reducing stress and increasing energy and concentration levels. Most importantly to the hospitality industry in particular, using subtle references to biophilic design can also create a luxurious atmosphere, which helps guests to feel truly comfortable and relaxed.

Legal & Business Choosing a CE marked product from a DHF member company means that the CE mark is evidence of compliance

It is vital that architects and specifiers choose CE marked products from suppliers that are members of the Door & Hardware Federation and there is a very good reason for this. It gives peace of mind that the product has been checked to ensure it complies with health and safety and many environmental regulations.

I

n the door and hardware market, the architect need not check compliance but a check still needs to be made to ensure it complies with Building Regulations. Nor will any risk assessments have to take place except by the building owner or user. Choosing a CE marked product from a DHF member company means that the CE mark is evidence of compliance relating to product safety under health and safety legislation, and so it helps protect the architect’s client against litigation in the event of an accident occurring.

In some cases, CE marking is compulsory and has been for a number of years. This is true in the case of powered industrial doors. All powered doors manufactured and supplied by DHF member companies are CE marked under the Machinery Directive.

Non-fire doors can be CE marked under the Construction Products Directive (CPD).Voluntary CE marking under this directive has been possible since 2004. Indeed, many DHF members already CE mark under this legislation to

give health and safety and environmental assurance to their customers – amongst other product-specific assurances such as thermal performance and wind/water penetration.

Architects and architectural technologists need to be aware that from 1st July this year, it will become a legal requirement to place CE marks on all industrial doors except for fire shutters.

In fact it will be a criminal offence to place a construction product on the market without a CE mark, provided there is a harmonised European standard in force for the product, which is the case with industrial doors and shutters.

This means that by choosing a DHF company rather than a non-member company, the specifier is assured that the manufacturer’s CE marking obligations have been met.

There are other benefits too in choosing a DHF member company. In particular, he is assured that every DHF member company abides by the DHF’s stringent Quality Assured technical standard of capability, customer service

and quality. These are further backed up

by DHF members’ adherence to a Code of Conduct governing members’ standards of workmanship, quality assurance, training, safety and business integrity. And there is a guarantee that the product will meet the performance levels stated in the declaration of performance.

Modern Methods of Construction

Eurobrick dresses studios Brick slip cladding is a growing sector as its numerous benefits are being more widely recognised. Eurobrick was the first company to introduce an insulated brick cladding system to Europe in 1991, since then the company has become a leading supplier to the commercial, house building and public sector markets.

With around 400m² of cladding materials supplied to site, the X-clad system provided a lightweight finish that was easy to transport and install onto the plywood sheathed frame. By utilising the slimmest available 17mm backer panel and extruded brick slips, the system weight was in the region of 36Kg/m².The lightweight brick slips lowered the environmental impact of the building process. From production to transportation, there were reductions in the carbon footprint of the project.

Eurobrick supplies a range of manufactured brick slips, which are much thinner than traditional brick, using around 60-70% less energy during the firing process in the kiln.

The brick slips are also extremely light, so during transportation, more of the product can be carried on a pallet. This lowers the number of vehicles required to complete final delivery of the product.

Reducing the time on the road ensured that the delivery process was as quick and energy efficient as possible.

Versatile system

W

hen fashion powerhouse, Vivienne Westwood, was planning the radical remodeling of an old brick warehouse in Battersea, London, Eurobrick was on hand to provide an innovative and environmentally friendly brick cladding solution.

The company was contracted by Isle Construction and Interiors to provide the brick slip X-clad system as the finish to the new structure.

The X-clad system is a third party certified insulated cladding solution that is suitable for both internal and external walls.

A pre-laminated backer panel is fixed to a wall or frame, and then stone or brick slips are bonded to a template of horizontal tracks on the backer panel.The installation is completed using pointing mortar, which

is piped into the joints before being finished like traditional brickwork.

The Vivienne Westwood project involved a part demolition of the existing structure and the construction of a contemporary five-storey steel framed building to accommodate studios and offices.

The steel frame was built with a timber infill, and the designs included a brick finish to the project.

The front elevation incorporates large scale glazing panels recessed within the surrounding brickwork.The dark glazing and frames contrasts with the white painted brickwork. Eurobrick’s thinnest backer panel was used together with a 15mm thick extruded brick slip, producing a total system depth of just 32mm.The slim line profile of the cladding assisted in creating the sleek recess detail.

The green credentials of the X-clad system are well established. It is a highly versatile cladding system with the option for up to 100mm of insulation available.

The insulation foam is a closed cell extruded polystyrene, which offers a more weather and waterproof finish than some insulation solutions.The polystyrene used in Eurobrick’s backer panels has a certified BRE Green Guide Rating of A, the most environmentally friendly currently available.

The addition of insulation will help lower energy bills, as less internal heat will be lost through the building’s outer walls.The inclusion of insulation on the outside of new or refurbished structures improves efficiency with reduced cold bridging.

The Vivienne Westwood project did not require any additional insulation, but even the thinnest 17mm panel contributes to the energy efficiency levels of the building.

The X-clad system allows for almost any style of brick to be incorporated in the cladding of a building.The Vivienne Westwood project used Britannia range brick slips, which were subsequently painted in order to provide a clean crisp finish to the building and provide a striking contrast between the contemporary and traditional elements.

Learning through colour The versatility of Spanish ceramics enables a playful interaction between colour and shape for the new Children’s Innovation Centre in Valencia, Spain, by Foursquare Arquitectos. The centre was conceived to champion educational innovation and to inspire its young occupants to explore the world around them, with the architecture of the project playing a key role in that aspiration.

he Technology Park of Valencia was built in the beginning of the 1980s by the Trade & Industry Department of the autonomous government of Valencia to promote Valencian industry and to foster innovation. Currently the Technology Park is home to 350 businesses.

Its main objectives are to stimulate the industrial diversification in the region of Valencia, to promote the adoption of new technologies and to carry out

Research, Development and Innovation initiatives. All this is beneficial for the creation of new business and job opportunities in the region.

The increasing growth of the Technology Park on the outskirts of Valencia resulted in a pressing need for easily accessible day care facilities for employees’ children, thus Spanish firm Foursquare Arquitectos were commissioned to design a new Children’s Education and Innovation Centre within

the grounds.

Commenting on its necessity, project leader Ana Garcia Sala, Foursquare Arquitectos, comments: “A lot of business are interested in this model of childcare. It offers advantages both in terms of conveniences – parents can be closer to their children and be absent from work less often, as well as in terms of quality of the service – as parents are more involved in the education of their children. However, the educational responsibility has been transferred to local councils and in some cases there are financial help schemes for preschoolers.

“The early period of childcare and education is not compulsory, but the sector needs to be regulated, as a lot of women are going back to work only four months after giving birth and need daycare facilities. The public administration regulates elements such as the size of the facilities/classrooms for each age group and the qualifications that the teachers must hold.”

Ana continues: “Education for children from 0-6 years is divided in two cycles of 3 years each, but it is not compulsory.

The obligatory education period is for 6-16 years olds and education for these students is free and funded by the state.”

The Valencia scheme had greater ambitions, however, than simply filling in a gap in the childcare market. The centre was also conceived to champion educational innovation and to inspire its young occupants to explore the world

“The colour encourages a transmission of sensations from both inside and out, creating a space that stimulates curiosity and creativity among the young users of the building. The rounded shapes and lack of sharp edges, both in the exterior and the interior, not only enhance the children’s safety, but also invite exploration and encourage proximity and interaction,” explains Sala.

Specific requirements In order to make shape and colour work together for maximum impact, Sala needed a versatile cladding material with

high UV colour resistance that would withstand both the test of time and the strong Iberian sun.

The optimum solution came in the form of advanced bespoke porcelain from Spanish specialist Natucer. To meet the very specific needs of the curved facade project, Natucer produced 13.5 x 55cm rectangular glazed porcelain tiles, together with specially curved pieces with a width of 13.5cm and a bowing radius of 85cm.

To achieve the required curvature, the glazed porcelain tiles were manufactured by a process of single-fire baking at 1195ºC in carefully monitored cycles.

Quality finish The tiles were fastened to tracks via aluminium staples set into slots within the tiles. The tracks were then fixed to the facade via a sandwiched panel of aluminium and mineral wool, supported by a metallic substructure.

Each of the five ‘colour coded’ circular blocks within the scheme has its own specific purpose.

The violet building is equipped for infants from 0-12 months and also offers breastfeeding facilities. The pink building is for toddlers from 1-2 years, and the green structure is dedicated to 2-3 year olds.

The red block accommodates a communal area, a gym, a multipurpose leisure room, a heated pool with saline water, plus facilities for 3-6 year old preschoolers. The blue building hosts the catering, staff rooms, administration, plus a learning and innovation centre aligned with the teaching methods of Montessori and Reggio Emilia.

Sustainability was another key consideration in terms of both design and specified materials, with the objective of achieving minimal environmental

impact. The choice of ceramics as a natural, durable and easy-maintenance cladding material with high thermal inertia, supports this intention, as well as the proximity of production – based only 60 km away in Castellon, the heart of the Spanish tile industry.

The building complex also relies on geothermal and solar energy sources, while the interior features a climate controlled resin floor and ventilation with heat recovery.

“There are minimal Spanish standard for energy efficiency we had to meet, however the project exceeded these minimal requirements and acquired an A energy certificate,” comments Ana.

Natucer were asked to produce a series of tiles in five distinct spectral groups – pink, violet, blue, red and green.

Using high temperature glazes, Natucer also produced pieces in four varying shades of each hue to allow the architect to create a tone-on-tone ‘patchwork’ effect for each facade.

When completing a hotel flooring refurbishment, time can be tight. In order to minimise disruption to staff and guests, the use of fast curing additives and accelerants can be added to epoxy resin waterproof surface membranes to dramatically reduce drying times from 18-24 hours, to just three.

Lifetime performance

Luxury and durability are key considerations when completing a flooring refurbishment in hotel and leisure facilities. A specifier should be mindful that the aesthetics of a finished floor contribute greatly to the overall look and feel of such settings, and should be a top priority in the preparatory stages of a project. Stephen Boulton, Technical Service Manager at F. Ball, offers expertise on how best to upgrade a floor’s performance and appeal.

o begin any installation, a contractor is advised to take the time to understand the specific requirements of the setting and floorcovering to maximise the appearance and lifespan of the finished floor. Initial preparation, including a thorough assessment of the subfloor and specifying the correct products, will help to avoid the common pitfalls that can lead to a compromised result, and in some cases, lead to a total ‘floor failure.’

Initially, a floor must be clean, dry and free from residues and contaminants before new products can be applied over the subfloor. A visual assessment of the subfloor is inadequate to check for the presence of moisture, and so F. Ball advises the use of a calibrated digital hygrometer for an accurate measurement. If relative humidity (RH) readings measure 75% or higher,

The application of a smoothing underlayment is paramount in order to create a smooth, even surface to install a new floorcovering onto. As well as being mindful of the appearance of hotel flooring, specifiers should consider the anticipated levels of daily foot traffic the floor will be subjected to, not to mention the loads and luggage that will need to be accommodated. Therefore, a heavy duty smoothing underlayment should be favoured in this installation to offer lasting performance.

A substandard flooring installation can be avoided by selecting the most appropriate subfloor preparation products for the specific setting. In hotels and leisure facilities particularly, first impressions matter greatly, and so the finished floor needs to be completed to the highest possible standard. Ensuring that a subfloor is suitably dry and smooth is the best start for a subfloor in order to achieve a five-star finish.

A range of subfloor preparation products from F. Ball, were recently used in the refurbishment of a wedding and function suite of the Jarvis Clayton Lodge Hotel, in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. With an events diary filled with weddings and conferences booked months in advance, the hotel required a fast track installation, completed to the highest quality finish.

The hotel selected a jet-black carpet with a contemporary white design for the room, and grey slate tiles for the service areas at the bar. Contractors from Newcastle Flooring specified a fast-setting smoothing underlayment from F. CE compliance surfaces The Construction Products Regulation comes into force on 1st July 2013 where it will become mandatory for products which fall under the scope of harmonised European Standards (hENs) to make a declaration of their performance and carry the CE mark before they can be placed on the market in the EU. Peter Jennings, Technical Director for ACO Building Drainage, explains more.

I

t is a common misconception that the CE mark is a sign of the quality of the product, but this is not the case. What it does show is that the product in question has been tested and passed specific tests required for that type of product. From a practical perspective, this means that the product is safe and is at a minimum performance level fit for purpose.

The UK was one of four countries that chose to opt out of CE marking of construction products when it was introduced across the European Union

in the 1990s, but the legislation is now changing. As of 1st July 2013, it will be a legal requirement for all products that fall within the scope of hENs to carry the CE marking accompanied by a Declaration of Performance (DoP) if they are to be placed anywhere on the EU market, including the UK. The DoP states the performance of the product when tested to the Essential Requirements of the standard. For example, when it comes to linear drainage systems these requirements cover load bearing capacity; durability and water

tightness. Although not a mandatory requirement in the UK until July 2013, providing assurance to our customers has been a key driver for us, with ACO Building Drainage introducing CE marking on its standard products ahead of schedule in 2011.

To ensure they comply with CE marking requirements, our products are subject to third party testing by an accredited Notified Body, an organisation which is authorised by the European Union to carry out such assessments. Mandatory factory production surveillance of product manufacturing control is carried out, and we also undertake our own testing to ensure our products meet the specified requirements set out in the hENs. As well as enabling us to trade with companies in Europe, this testing and the resulting CE mark provides our customers with added reassurance that our products are fit for purpose.

For our standard products, the channel element is marked with a label containing the familiar CE logo, a reference to the applicable harmonised standard, for example EN1433, and load classification.

Depending on its size and the available space, the grating may also be marked in a similar manner.

Despite the fact that the mandatory CE marking deadline is just around the corner some manufacturers have yet to introduce it across their product range.

The implications of not carrying CE marking on products are potentially very serious for the manufacturer and supply chain. After 1st July 2013 it will become a criminal offence to place any construction product covered by hENs on the market without a CE mark. With this in mind, it’s clear to see why mandatory CE marking is so important.

How do you regard the May Design Series as a unique forum for inspiration and specification?

Breaking the mould

It brings together so many suppliers under one roof in an environment with design at its core which is easily navigated and a pleasure to use.

The May Design Series, taking place from 19-21st at London’s ExCel, is tailored to serve the needs of the Londonbased interior design, property, architectural and retail communities. In the run-up, Ab Rogers talks to FC&A about his influential role in the event and the key projects that have led him to be instrumental in this inaugural showcase.

How do you envisage trade events to evolve for the thriving design community?

Please give a brief history of your professional background.

In your opinion, how important is the relationship between architects and interior designers?

What inspired you to become an interior designer?

I spent my childhood marinated in design. My mother, father and step father were all architects and though I initially rebelled and tried to escape, I was subconsciously lured back over time and fell in love with the space between science and poetry and in taking ideas from concept to reality.

Who has been your greatest influence?

I have many, from fish of the deep abyss to tomatoes on a market stall. In terms of people, my mother and father, Nikk Saint Phalle, Rebecca Horn, Helen

I am always proudest of our latest achievement – I am excited by what we are doing at the RCA in pioneering a new multi-sensorial platform of design where function, poetry and psychology converge. And, equally by our design for Selfridges in Birmingham, bring the stunning Future Systems building back to life, as well as reinventing the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum in Cornwall. I am also proud of the Ametsa restaurant, Christina Ong and Como Hotels.

All relationships within the industry are important; everyone needs to collaborate to create an integral final solution.

I initially trained as a Cabinet Maker then started to design exhibitions and kitchens as well as making them. I then spent six months doing Atlantic sailing boat deliveries – across the pacific, including the Panama cana. I then did my MA in industrial design at the Royal College of Art and set up Kitchen/Rogers design with a fellow student Shona Kitchen. We worked together for five years before going our separate ways. At which point I started Ab Rogers Design the studio I still have now. Last spring I became Head of Programme for interior design at the RCA.

Phil Harvey, Director of Technical Services at Timloc, comments: “Whilst plasterboard faced access panels are still in common use, the new Timloc beaded range offers so many advantages in comparison.

“Plasterboard faced hatches and doors can be expensive and are prone to cracking and crumbling during transit, storage, installation and regular use.

Doors requiring plaster skim finish also need preparation to prevent locks, hinges and tolerance gaps becoming blocked and are difficult to finish to a high standard.

“It’s also worth remembering that having an access door/hatch finished with plasterboard alone, will not make the product fire-rated,” he adds.

Cost-effective solution

For years, traditionally styled plasterboard faced access panels have been in common use throughout the building industry, and despite presenting a number of disadvantages, they still hold a well-established position in the market.

ecognising the potential for a more modern alternative, building product specialist Timloc has launched its latest range of beaded access panels designed especially to offer builders and contractors an attractive, robust and cost effective alternative to costly, dated Plasterboard faced products.

Designed for use in dry lined walls and ceilings that are pre plaster skimmed, Timloc beaded access panels consist of a metal-faced door skin with a smooth

powder coated finish to facilitate overpainting. The door skin is inserted into a perforated frame that creates a good plaster key and leaves a plaster-beaded edge around the door aperture. The result is a concealed access door with no visible frame, superior aesthetic appearance and quality finish.

The panels have a fully removable door for ease of installation. The quick release hinge allows easy access and can also be positioned to open left or right handed. Fire-rated and non fire-rated versions are available.

Timloc offers robust beaded access panels

In line with Part J of the Building Regulations, Timloc’s fire-rated and non-fire rated beaded panel ranges also help meet the new gas safety industry requirements for concealed boiler flue inspection access. The fire-rated panels are also draught stripped and insulated which means they don’t compromise the acoustic integrity of the wall, thereby meeting Part E of the Building Regulations.

Furthermore, unlike plasterboard faced panels, which, if damaged, require a complete and often costly, replacement, Timloc panels can be transported safely and easily, but if any damage is sustained, they can be filled much more cost effectively – in a similar way to car body repairs. In situ, the beaded panels retain their aesthetics for much longer than plasterboard which can tend to age quickly after installation.

T-T trio specified for retail park Leading pumping station manufacturer T-T has been selected to supply three Package Pumping Stations to Marshall Construction for installation at Prestatyn’s brand new retail park.

Serving a large Marks & Spencer and Tesco superstore, the installation is now complete and commissioned and the shopping centre is open for business.

Supplying one Saturn 3m deep station for storm/surface water and two Jupiter 4.5m deep station for foul water, T-T was recommended for the project by a long standing customer Stockford Anderson. A

spokesman from the company comments: “Due to the good service we receive at our sites, when my client asked who should install the pumping system it made sense to choose T-T.”

He continues: “The communication with the team at T-T is great and the engineers that arrive on site are very knowledgeable and I do not recall once where we have been left without a solution.”

lose to Crackley Wood and overlooking Green Belt, the unique property of Crackley Hill Grange near Kenilworth has seen a major redevelopment with an extension to the ground floor. As part of the revamp of this property, design specifications required the very best ecofriendly energy saving heating system.

With this is mind, architect Michael Pilkington of MPC Partnership turned to

the energy efficient Schlüter-BEKOTECTHERM underfloor heating system, which is able to distribute heat much faster due to a 30% thinner screed compared to other similar systems. The patented low assembly height of Schlüter’s ceramic thermal comfort floor allows it to respond more rapidly to temperature changes due to the interconnected air channels within the Schlüter-DITRA membrane, which in turn means it requires significantly less energy to heat the room to the required temperature.

Michael explained why he recommended Schlüter-Systems when it came to Crackley Hill Grange, he comments: “This project required installation of an underfloor heating system throughout the ground floor, covering seven rooms, each with their own thermostat controller. PaySmart debt free energy billing Historically, many landlords and Housing Associations who manage housing schemes with communal heating have been required to maintain a debt fund to cover any shortfall in energy payments.

This is used in circumstances where residents fail to pay for the energy they have consumed and often leads to an increase in the tariff rate for all residents of the scheme to cover the debt fund.

Victaulic ensures record installation time

The new £142m (€167m) hospital centre in Calais is one of France’s most technically-advanced hospitals. Victaulic Construction Piping Services helped Missenard Quint to install the Calais Hospital piping system in just three months.

Olivier Martelli and Michael Holard of Missenard and Quint, both responsible for the cooperation with Victaulic said: “We were under enormous time pressure with this project. Grooved technology was the obvious route to take, to ensure on-time delivery of our part of the project, so as not to delay our colleagues at the next stage.”

The Calais Hospital team was able to reduce construction time by using Victaulic Construction Piping Services (CPS) project management and bagand-tag services. In the refurbishment of the Flaxman Gallery housed in University College London (UCL) Library, consultant Fowler Martin introduced Jaga Mini Canal trench heating.

What marked this project out as being special was the requirement that the grille should be solid bronze to harmonise with other architectural accents and the extremely tight radius for the trench heating which was required to follow the line of the bench seating above. Jaga’s design solution was to build the circular trench in four quadrants. The highest quality bronze was sourced from France and the grilles were entirely hand-crafted. (

The CPS team managed the piping installation from start to finish. Products were delivered to the site in the correct quantities, on the right floor of the building, just where and when they needed to be used. Prefabricating some of the products on-site also meant that production could still continue, whilst the floor of the mechanical room was still being finished, again saving time.

The whole piping system was completed using a range of Victaulic rigid couplings, flexible couplings, flange adaptors, elbows, concentric reducers and tee fittings, as well as motorised butterfly valves of up to 300mm diameter on the cooling water system.

How to construct level thresholds incorporating different styles and sizes of flooring/floor slab construction can present the designer with difficulties. The floor surface must follow through at opening level yet often so doing results in the arrangement being susceptible to damp ingress.

Localised repairs were carried out to the existing roof and this was then cleaned and prepared for overlaying with the new Stratex warm roof system. The existing roof membrane acted as the vapour control layer for the new roof and 123mm Kempertherm insulation was bonded directly onto the prepared substrate. This was then coated with Kemper System’s D Primer and, once the primer had cured, Cooper Roofing applied the Kemperol V210 liquid waterproofing. The V210 resin saturates a flexible reinforcement fleece, which is laid in a single process and cures to create a strong, flexible and durable waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate.

Cooper Roofing completed the installation by stripping back the gutter areas where a new vapour barrier was installed, and creating a clean edge with a new GRP trim.

Selectaglaze breathes new life into disused buildings

A consequence of a vibrant neighbourhood is noise and Selectaglaze, a UK leading specialist in secondary glazing systems has recently been involved with two Central London boutique hotel developments, The Zetter Hotel in Clerkenwell and Hotel Indigo in the Minories.

Originally a warehouse and once the home of the football pools company of the same name, the five-storey 59-room boutique Zetter Hotel opened to critical acclaim, being voted one of the world’s ‘50 coolest hotels’ by industry bible Conde Nast Traveller.

The hotel had retained the building’s original sash windows and installed bi-folding shutters to the room side of the bedrooms but this combination did not provide the required level of noise insulation. To remedy this, Selectaglaze provided sliding secondary units fitted flush to the window openings, thus allowing easy access to the shutters and external windows. This has not only produced exceptionally quiet rooms but will help considerably in reducing energy consumption.

Hotel Indigo located in The Minories,

on the edge of the Square Mile within the capital’s main financial district, is a four star hotel, part of the wordwide InterContinental Hotels Group.

Occupying what was formerly an office building and bank, conversion to a top

class boutique hotel and restaurant was a major architectural and interior design undertaking. As part of the conversion it was decided to replace the windows with double glazed frames but standard double glazing does not provide the levels of sound insulation needed by the guests.

The solution was to install secondary glazing, thus creating triple-glazing which offered noise insulation in excess of 45dB and further improved the energy performance of the window, reducing heating costs and improving sustainability.

Crittall provides the right formula for Science Museum

The Science Museum in London is a much loved and familiar landmark, but over the years, the exterior has fallen prey to the wear and tear of the London way of life. A replacement window programme was recently announced, and appointed by architects, Kirsop and Co, Crittall had to draw on its extensive experience and expertise to replace the windows to the Exhibition Road entrance.

Having provided initial elevation and detailed drawings for planning purposes, Crittall helped to obtain permission to the satisfaction of all parties, including main contractor, DBR (London) Ltd, and supplying its Corporate 2000 profiles, began the meticulous and exact replacement programme.

One of the features of the glazing was the inclusion of Enduroshield transparent coating to the surface of the glass for the very large top hung fixed light Corporate 2000 profiles. The openings at the top are supplied with electronic chain actuators, supplied by long term Crittall partner, SE Controls. Double glazed, the centre pane of the glazing achieves the required U value of 1.2w/m2K for compliance with Part L of the Building Regulations, with Low E glass on the

inside to control heat gain. The windows were finished in black matt polyester powder coating.

Logistically, Crittall faced numerous challenges on the project, with a limited time period each day to strip out, glaze and install the profiles. With no deliveries allowed before 6pm, the timing and meticulous attention to detail had to be exact in order for the smooth progression of the instalment. However, with intense planning and thorough application, the windows were installed to schedule and within the time limits.

Deceuninck’s high rise credentials

Deceuninck fabricator, Dempsey Dyer, has just completed a large refurbishment contract with Pennine Housing 2000. The contract involved replacing 867 windows in three high rise tower blocks in Mixenden, West Yorkshire. The windows in each of the blocks needed to be replaced as part of a larger renovation and refurbishment project.

The project presented several difficulties, meaning it was only suitable for the most experienced of contractors. Perhaps the greatest of these difficulties was the sheer

scale of the project: replacing 867 windows in three high rise buildings on budget and on schedule requires considerable skill and expertise. Dempsey Dyer, coincidentally based just down the road from Mixenden in Pontefract, had all the credentials the project demanded and duly tendered for it.

The contractor, Wates Group, had originally specified aluminium windows.

John Duckworth, Commercial Manager at Deceuninck demonstrated the company’s Zendow 3000 system with the unique Decoroc finish in RAL 7016 anthracite grey. It quickly became clear that not only would PVC-U windows with a Decoroc finish do the job aesthetically, they would also offer thermal efficiency benefits and bring a cost saving on the aluminium alternative.

The size of the project meant a great deal of pre-planning was required. Firstly, the location of the flats in an extremely exposed valley meant that Dempsey Dyer

needed detailed wind pressure calculations and strength tests to demonstrate the windows would be fit for purpose and have longevity.

Access equipment such as scaffolding was also organised well ahead of schedule in order to negotiate cost savings that could be passed on to Wates and Pennine Housing 2000.

When it came to installation, it took three installation teams just 12 weeks to install all the tilt and turn windows.

The Dempsey Dyer team is justifiably proud of the finished result. Martyn Wright, Dempsey Dyer’s Commercial Sales Manager says: “We work hard to ensure that every job runs smoothly and this was no exception. Peterborough Cathedral sings the praises of new safety system

In late 2011 Peterborough Cathedral recognised that its fire detection system was coming towards the end of its life and an increasing number of highly disruptive unwanted alarms made the installation of a new one an urgent requirement. Having had its services recommended by one of the other companies working at the Cathedral, solutions specialist, Lyrico Systems, was invited to visit and outline its recommendations.

Lyrico Systems has developed an enviable reputation for its expertise and the quality of its work. Mike Palmer, the company’s Managing Director, explains: “It was clear that the previous system needed replacing and, given the size and scale of the area that needed to be covered, we knew that only state-of-the-art technology could ensure the requisite level of protection.

As a result, our proposal centred on the installation of a Hochiki Europe addressable fire detection system which would offer Peterborough Cathedral excellent reliability and performance.”

The system comprises a wide variety of Hochiki Europe devices, including the YBO-R/3 sounder mounting base, which is coloured red for easy identification and designed specifically for use with the

company’s range of wall sounders – such as the CHQ-WS2 wall sounder and the CHQ-WSB wall sounder beacon – which were used extensively throughout.

These were complemented by the use of ALG-EN optical smoke sensors that feature High Performance Chamber Technology.

This minimises the differences in sensitivity experienced in flaming and smouldering fires and the result is a high performance device that is incredibly responsive and helps to reduce the possibility of unwanted alarms. In addition, Lyrico Systems specified a number of CHQ-POM powered-output modules and CHQ-AB loop powered addressable beacons.

Work was completed in June 2012 and the system has since lived up to all expectations, with no unwanted alarms reported.

Off-site approach helps to increase theatre capacity

STI (Europe) has introduced the new Wireless Alert Series, a system that protects and monitors fire exits and extinguishers. The innovative monitoring system enables users to wirelessly supervise fire exits, extinguishers, windows and cabinets from one convenient location.

The double cantilever arrangement facilitates patient flows and access to the department’s support facilities.

A key objective for the project was to produce an inspiring and stimulating environment for the students, but also comply with budget restrictions.

Each building has its own colour; yellow, green, purple, orange or blue, with the main hub marrying all five colours together. The wide range of colours offered by Glidden Trade, gave the flexibility to develop a vibrant decorative scheme in each zone.

Gary Boydell, Associate at Maber Architects, concludes: “The overall vision for the Heritage Community School was to create a strong sense of unity throughout the separate teaching blocks, and the nature of the busy school meant that this also demanded a durable yet stimulating design. The Glidden Trade coatings selected were able to assist in fulfilling this brief and delivering a costeffective solution, whilst also delivering a professional finish.”
