Staying in touch The tactile quality of a building plays a large part in how we perceive and relate to it. Texture has always been a prominent facet within architecture – from early, rudimentary constructions made from materials like stone, timber and plaster – to later architecture where materials became more refined and processed.

E

ven during advent of mid to late 20th Century concrete construction, the feel of a surface was key.The concrete used for the National Theatre, London was created by the use of timber shuttering which left the imprint of the wood grain on the finished building surface.The end of the last century witnessed a move toward harder, sleeker architecture and interiors.

Since then, an awareness of sustainability and environmental considerations brought about through political and social imperatives has led to an aesthetic where visibly more organic materials are desirable.

As part of this general move towards more natural, less processed materials, Knauf AMF Ceilings developed a range of quality acoustic ceiling and wall panels manufactured from sustainable wood-wool from PEFC and FSC certified sources.The visible wood fibres give the panels a distinctive, textured finish.

Leading Passivhaus architects Architype specified Heradesign for one of the country’s first Passivhaus primary schools as its environmental credentials closely aligned with the project’s sustainable design ethos.The wood-wool surface of Heradesign harmonised perfectly with the minimalist style of the school’s architecture.

The architect explains:“The white and natural coloured acoustic ceiling panels bring a sense of warmth and texture into the learning spaces. In all our specifications, especially for schools, we opt for non-toxic and healthy materials to create a conducive learning environment.We are very

pleased with Heradesign and it has become part of our standard robust palette of sustainable materials.”

People like to feel close to nature.The use of natural textures helps to breathe life into a building giving a feeling of comfort.Architects and designers Urban Salon refurbished London HQ of advertising agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty using natural materials to provide texture, pattern and colour to give the office an inviting, welcoming feel. Heradesign ceiling fins were suspended under the glass vaulted roof in the atrium to provide acoustic control and solar shading.

They also work in harmony with the overall interior design as the architect explains:“We designed specially formed fins produced in a lightgrey on one side and standard white on the other to complement the natural colours of the bamboo and textiles used elsewhere in the central studio.”

Texture can help communicate a company’s character. Heradesign was fitted in the reception area, meeting room and working areas in the new offices of Liverpool property law specialist JB Leitch. Snook Architects were briefed to create an office interior that reflected the aspirations of the legal practice.The colour palette was limited so texture was used to create a warm, understated elegance that echoed the company’s modern, confident style.

Yeoman Shield adds sparkle to wall protection When a local coffee shop, owned by mother and daughter team, Tracy and Rebecca, found that their newly decorated walls were quickly showing signs of damage they turned to Yeoman Shield Wall & Door protection for help.

pen since April 2014 with business being strong,The Coffee Block at Drighlington, Leeds which serves barista coffee, tea, sandwiches and cakes found that the wall between the kitchen area and the front of house was quickly looking grubby, worn and damaged.

“We obviously took a lot of time and consideration in choosing decor and colours which will enhance our customers visit. However after all this effort we were quite dismayed at the speed the wall to the kitchen area was showing the wear and tear,” commented Rebecca.

Yeoman Shield – whose staff use the coffee shop regularly – when hearing about this problem suggested installing Yeoman Shield HessianEx wall protection panels in a Silver finish.

Explained Sally Moores from Yeoman Shield: “We had just launched our new metallic colour range and thought due to the style and colour

The durable wall protection panels were installed to a metre high, by Yeoman Shield’s directly employed fixing operatives, along the main wall and also around the entrance to The Coffee Block to prevent unsightly damage whilst keeping the shop looking on trend and enticing to customers.

“We are thoroughly happy with the result and the metallic colour looks great.The panels are easy to clean with the added benefit of not having to touch up with paint or re plaster the walls for some time to come,” concluded Rebecca.

Food for thought Meeting the needs of the food industry’s floor requirements can be quite a challenge. A clean working environment is absolutely crucial but what makes this industry one of the most demanding when it comes to selecting the right floor?

F

loors in food manufacturing are constantly under stress from water and chemicals, variations in temperature and cleaning agents. While these floors need to be hygienic and meet the requirements for health and safety, they must also be chemical and slip resistant, repairable and have an ability to withstand variations in temperature, high mechanical loads and wear. This is why a floor designed specifically for the food manufacturing industry is a must.

Ceramic tiles have been used in the past but as a flooring solution in a sector with such rigorous and demanding requirements, they provide their own set of problems with tiles becoming dislodged, chipped or the grout breaking down during steam cleaning processes, resulting in hygiene implications.

With the major supermarket chains regularly auditing their supply chain, keeping surfaces hygienically clean is one of the biggest challenges for food manufacturers so floors must be carefully designed to enable effective cleaning, and all coatings and finishes chosen with this in mind. If a floor finish is

incompatible with cleaning agents, this may cause changes to its physical properties or the quality of the finish – leading to softening or hardening, reduced flexibility, cracking, flaking or discolouring.

A flooring system in the food industry must also prevent the penetration or migration of any substances hazardous to health from the floor into the foodstuffs or the environment.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) describes the smart, computerized, threedimensional planning of buildings.The features

Already in the USA, BIM-based planning has become standard practice among architects and construction engineers. In 2016, it will become a mandatory requirement in the UK for all publicly financed construction projects. BIM has been given high priority in France, as it has in Germany with the Federal Ministry for Transport

The advantage of such a detailed and realistic 3D planning capability lies in the improved understanding of a building, and thus its ongoing optimization.With each change in the dimensions of a movable wall, the height and width of the constituent partition elements are automatically modified. Changes to a partitioning configuration can be quickly simulated and the knowledge gained used to finally select the optimum placement of say, the pass doors.

Plans can be accurately tailored to each individual building and application type ranging from a simple, parameterizable partition system with central single-point suspension right through to a stacking track assembly with additional access tracks located outside the main axis.

BIM downloads Once registered, specifiers can use the download links to obtain the DORMA Hüppe BIM object packages for specific software systems. The models currently implemented are for Autodesk Revit (.rfa). Development of Graphisoft Archicad (.pln) versions is ongoing, with publication due this year.

“There is no doubt that BIM is here to stay,” agrees Sargent. “This technology is changing the face of construction and the way we are going to be working in the future. As Gold awardwinning contractors, we are keen to embrace the opportunities it presents for more efficient working practices. Offering the modelling tools for the DORMA moveable wall range is just the first step and we are working to create BIM files for our other systems too.”

Accoya is also naturally insulating, making it an ideal material to retain warmth in cold winters and perfect for use with underfloor heating. In a recent independent report by BM TRADA, it was suggested that the use of modified floor coverings such as Accoya over underfloor heating systems is likely to constitute an added insurance against the likelihood of latent screed moisture, which would ordinarily compromise the floor covering in circumstances where the floor has been installed in intimate contact with newly cast screed heated by an underfloor source.

Accoya is UV resistant, meaning that there is little risk to Accoya wood flooring which is exposed to excess sunlight and, in independent testing carried out by the Hiroshima Prefectural Technology Research Institute,Accoya was recently proven to avoid high thermal gain, making it barefoot friendly and the ideal material to place underfoot. During testing, the wood remained cool to touch despite being in direct sunlight on a day with an ambient temperature of 32 degrees Celsius.

Three new collections join Kährs’ awardwinning range Renowned for its quality, performance and design scope, Kährs award-winning range includes over 140 different wood floors, presented throughout 25 collections. Floors are offered in nine different sustainable wood species and numerous patterns – from one-strip plank to retro-styled Herringbone.

M

any designs feature surface treatments – including brushed, handscraped, sawn, smoked, stained and bevelled finishes – and there are options to suit all environments, from retail and leisure, to residential development.

All floors have a multi-layered construction, based on the original ‘parquet’ design invented and patented by Kährs in 1941.

As well as providing optimum stability, the construction method also uses resources in the most nature-friendly way. New designs for 2015 include Kährs Bloc, Real and Småland Collections.

Kährs Bloc is an on-trend patterned wood floor created using individual oak staves, in three different sizes and shades. Sections are easily joined with an oak tongue to create unlimited geometric designs – from traditional herringbone to modern brick – in single or multi-colours. Staves can also be used to create eye-catching borders around patterned or traditional plank floors.

All Kährs Bloc staves have an even timber grain, a lightly brushed surface and a bevelled edge along all four sides. Nature Bloc has an oil prefinish, whilst White and Grey Bloc are oiled and stained, which creates an elegant washed hue. All Kährs finishes are solvent-free, exceptionally durable and promote easy care.

Individual staves are 15mm thick and measure 300 x 300mm, 300 x 600mm or 300 x 900mm;

the engineered construction comprises a sustainable oak surface layer and back, and a plywood core. This method provides a surface that is climatically stable, making Kährs Bloc Collection – like all Kährs floors - ideal for installation over underfloor heating systems.

Other new ranges include Kährs Real and Småland Collections. Real is defined by its imposing format and the majestic oak planks span 2400-3000mm in length and measure 250/300mm in width. The collection includes even and rustic timber grades, and natural, misty white and light grey stained finishes.

Each of the six individual designs are offered in a choice of timber grades, giving a total of 12 flooring options. All designs have a lightly brushed surface and a tactile oiled prefinish; an unfinished plank is also available by special order.

A subtle four-sided bevel edge accentuates the plank format and gives an elegant look.

For a very rustic look, Kährs new Småland Collection features a dynamic timber surface with a unique composition of knots, graining and cracks. Its very lively, undulating appearance is complemented with a range of treatments, which create a multi-faceted surface.

All floors within the new range are made in Småland, Sweden; within the Småland forest region where Kährs was founded in 1857.

The designs have a one-strip ‘plank’ format enhanced by a bevelled edge along all four sides. Colour tones range from light beige/ grey Oak Vista, to deep toned Tveta, which is smoked to give a brown/black hue. Surface treatments include brushing, handscraping, sawing, staining and smoking, and all designs have an oiled prefinish.

Armstrong’s green credentials go from strength to strength It is 12 years since Armstrong Ceilings pioneered the recycling of mineral ceiling tiles in the UK. This month sees completion of the manufacturer’s largest off-cut recycling project to date, the new South Glasgow University Hospital and Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

The recycling service, which is free of charge for contractors, notched up some 117,000m2 or 465 tonnes of old End Of Life (EOL) or new off-cut (OCR) mineral ceiling tiles last year, demolishing its target of 100,000m2.

n this project Armstrong diverted more than 10,000m2 or 35 tonnes of mineral ceiling tile off-cuts from landfill. Main contractor Brookfield Multiplex had worked with Armstrong before to recycle 8,000m2 or 32 tonnes of Bioguard Plain ceiling tile off-cuts at Peterborough City Hospital.

These two projects have helped Armstrong build its recycling expertise to such an extent that it smashed its green target for 2014.

have also saved contractors tens of thousands of pounds in landfill taxes.

Most of the projects (49%) used Armstrong’s EOL service for refurbishment applications, with some 27% using the EOL service on complete strip-out or demolition projects where the building was going through a change of use – typically office blocks into apartments where the requirement for suspended ceilings was less. Some 24% of the projects were for the OCR service on new installations.

However, it is not just the recycling service which places the company at the forefront of the green movement. In 2013, the 10th anniversary of its recycling services, Armstrong also became the world’s first manufacturer of mineral ceiling tiles to win Cradle to Cradle status.

This was with its Perla OP 0.95 tile, containing 53% recycled content and being 100% recyclable, followed very recently by the accreditation of the complete Perla range.

In the meantime it achieved Cradle to Cradle status for its Ultima+ mineral range.

Cradle to Cradle products are assessed on five criteria – material health, material re-utilisation, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship and social responsibility – and awarded one of four levels of certification, from basic through to platinum.

The programme was developed to meet growing customer demand for sustainable products, with certification already becoming a requirement for building projects in America and parts of Europe. It is designed to give specifiers and clients a transparent mechanism to compare the sustainability performance of competitive products.

Ringing the changes Dura Composites explains why wood plastic composite is fast becoming the number one way to refresh an outdoor space.

W

ith summer underway, inevitably thoughts turn to how best to take advantage of sunny days and warm evenings. More than ever, the outdoors has become an extension of a building’s main living space, but a well-designed landscape needs careful planning to ensure it’s both complementary and future-proof.

One key consideration is how to choose the right flooring material for walkways, seating areas, balconies, terraces and leisure sites to ensure a strong visual harmony between indoor and outdoor spaces. One solution which has proven its suitability for all of these applications in recent years is decking, which has many advantages over materials such as concrete or stone paving, such as being able to provide a consistent

surface which can easily relate to the internal floor levels. Decks are ideal for sloping sites or sites with boggy ground as they create a practical and usable space without the need for major earthworks or retaining walls.

Strong and durable, composite timber looks and feels just like natural wood and the use of advanced below surface fixings can create a smart, uniform and barefoot friendly deck to suit any environment.

The newest addition to the collection is Marmoleum Modular Lines, a contemporary linear range featuring a palette of 15 striated colours, including cool whites and greys alongside soft and warm natural wood tones – subtle hues that not only blend beautifully together but which can also be combined with elements from the other three ranges.

The MCIAT Professional Assessment

– a new qualifying route What is the MCIAT Professional Assessment?

The MCIAT Professional Assessment is a flexible, rigorous, robust and quality assured qualifying process, based on performance and designed to recognise the diversity of Architectural Technology.

Candidates must provide an in-depth critical analysis clearly summarising their professional experience. This should be a reflective report and should refer to challenges and successes encountered whilst working on projects and how any issues were resolved.

Applicants should also undertake a self-evaluation highlighting their strengths and weaknesses in relation to their area(s) of practice.

The Professional Assessment process is based on four core competencies: • Designing • Managing • Practising • Developing (self)

Who can apply for the MCIAT Professional Assessment?

Any applicant working in or on, for example, academia, general practice, component design, refurbishment, small residential projects, large commercial projects etc within Architectural Technology, should be able to apply their own experience to the Professional Assessment process, but they must hold one of the following membership grades: ACIAT, TCIAT or profile candidate.

Each application will be assessed on its merit. However, each applicant will need to demonstrate a sufficient level of knowledge and understanding and professional competence/experience in relation to their sphere/s of practice and demonstrate to the Institute they can meet the expectations of a Chartered Architectural Technologist, MCIAT.

How much does it cost?

To apply for the Professional Assessment, applicants are required to pay £300 for the assessment of the application and the Professional Assessment Interview.
