n the past, the public’s perception of ‘green buildings’ might have comprised unsightly solar panels, straw bales, green roofs or an excessive placement of flora and fauna on a building’s facade. Nowadays, innovations in building materials have enabled architects and specifiers to develop sustainable buildings without compromising on design and performance.

Take, for example, concrete. By no means perceived as an ‘eco-friendly’ choice in construction, concrete has been up against several challenges to restore confidence in the eco-conscious specifier. In response to the UK Government’s 2020 target for reducing carbon emmissions, The Concrete Centre has committed to offer best practice guidance on the use of concrete to help an industry which is striving to exceed its climate change goals.

In this month’s issue, Guy Thompson explains how The Concrete Centre responds to the challenges and many enquiries about the sustainability performance of concrete and how the industry is committed to a holistic measure of sustainability thus enabling designers and specifiers to produce evermore sustainable solutions. In Brief ISG wins Aviva Pinnacle scheme

Flanagan Lawrence wins competition for the Szczecin Summer Theatre

ISG has secured its latest win with Aviva Investors, taking an £11m scheme to refurbish Pinnacle House in Wimbledon.The project sees ISG increase existing office accommodation by circa 50%, with the addition of three new floors and a revised internal layout to create a 56,000ft2 high-specification office development. ISG will transform the outdated facade of the existing building, replacing the roadside brickwork and glazed elevation with a striking scalloped curtain walling design.

CCI moves into new building

The CCI is a unique collaboration between the University of Cambridge and leading internationally-focused biodiversity conservation organisations clustered around Cambridge.

The Nicholas Hare Architects-led team has transformed the existing 1960s Brutalist building into an experimental collaborative hub designed to enhance creative interaction.

Stratford wins over London’s workers Stratford and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has been voted the area in London likely to improve most by 2020, according to a new poll of over 1000 Londoners by YouGov and leading international property and infrastructure group, Lendlease. More than one in five (21%) London adults chose Stratford and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, twice as much as any other area in the capital and ahead of prominent redevelopment districts including Croydon (9%), the City (9%), Tottenham (6%), Canary Wharf (4%) and Wembley (4%).

The award-winning practice has designed an acoustically optimised outdoor performance space, located in Kasprowicza Park, Szczecin.The brief called for design proposals to maximise the flexibility of the 1976-designed theatre for a variety of performances on the stage, and to add a new roof to enclose both the stage and the audience.

The underside of the roof, which covers the stage and front of auditorium, will enhance and project the natural acoustic for orchestral events.

This is achieved by a roof which is structurally independent of the existing arch, and is formed by a curved truss which serves as the edge beam to a single cable net structure.

This net supports a series of inflated fabric roof panels and suspended acoustic reflectors.

Two additional trusses span the stage to support the load of the lighting grid. The back of the stage is enclosed acoustically by curved glazed screens, which offer picturesque views out to Rusalka Lake and create a scenic backdrop to performances.

Head of Responsible Sourcing for BRE

IBI Group has restructured its leadership team after announcing Paul Hewes as Regional Director supported by two Deputy Regional Directors. Paul will be focused on advancing the continued transformation of the 250 strong UK practice. Neil Lewin will be responsible for developing IBI Group’s contribution to urban development. Graeme Scott will be responsible for creating synergies across IBI’s services.

MWH has appointed Paul Taylor as Head of Programme Development for MWH in the UK. Paul was previously Head of Planning and Cost Management at Sellafield, where he led a successful campaign to fully restructure Sellafield’s approach to planning, cost management and estimating for one of the UK’s largest capital programmes.

Prior to this, he was a Technical Director of Project Controls in Europe and Africa at MWH.

Dr Shamir Ghumra has been appointed as Associate Director; Head of Responsible Sourcing in the Centre for Sustainable Products at BRE. He will lead a team of experts who are helping construction supply chain companies understand and manage the risks and opportunities within their own products, services and labour supply chain. Shamir also contributes to a number of ISO and CEN committees.

Citygate redevelopment completes

The extensive redevelopment of Citygate, the 47,000ft2, six-storey office development in Manchester’s central core, has completed.The scheme, which is owned by Hermes Real Estate, was designed by Pozzoni Architecture Limited and the building has been completely remodelled over the last eight months.The former Barclays Bank space including the upper floors have been stripped out, along with the existing toilets and former reception. Externally a new facade to the primary elevation has dramatically changed the visual appearance of the building.

Results of Boardroom to Building Site survey to be revealed Pauline Traetto leads the BRE Academy and is responsible for growing its training and education portfolio.

The BRE Academy has launched a skills gap survey to identify the current and future employment needs of the construction industry.

Pauline Traetto, Director of BRE Academy, explains the reasoning behind the study: “The construction industry faces a pressing need for a workforce that can deliver transformational change in

the face of a convergence of significant challenges; less land, fewer resources, more people, more demand, climate change and adaption issues, migration to cities, the move to digital construction or BIM. “But do we really know what the ‘true’ skills gap is in the construction industry, and do we know what skills are needed for the future? These are the issues being explored by the BRE Academy in our skills gap survey.

“For example, off-site and modular techniques have been suggested as realistic solutions to deliver the quality and volume of homes needed to curb the UK housing crisis.

Does this mean we will need fewer bricklayers, and more mechanical engineers who will

manage what could become a robotic manufacturing activity to develop off-site builds?

“This requires a totally different skill base, is this a ‘skills gap’? Or is off-site construction a way to mitigate skills shortages and time constraints? This is just one of a number of issues that the survey aims to reveal.

“It also aims to understand the poor public image of the construction industry, the gender diversity split and how best to develop appealing career pathways for young industry entrants.

“The key findings will be announced at the main conference on Day 3 of Ecobuild, dedicated to Next Generation.”

Enterprising sustainability on Liverpool waterfront The Mersey Waters Enterprise Zone was one of the first four locations established by the Government, designed to attract investment and accelerate growth.

T

he £10bn development comprises two schemes led by Peel Holdings; Wirral Waters and Liverpool Waters. Located on either side of the River Mersey at Liverpool’s famous docklands, the two projects are amongst the largest regeneration schemes in the UK. One of the first flagship schemes to be constructed within the 500-acre Wirral Waters regeneration scheme is the Tower Wharf Project, a 48,000ft2 Grade A office building constructed by Eric Wright Construction on behalf of developer, Longmeadow Estates with support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

was designed by Liverpool-based architects, Falconer Chester Hall.While its design concept references Liverpool’s past and the trading vessels that once traversed the waters on its doorstep, the building remains forward focused on sustainability and has been designed to BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards.

Explains Managing Director of Eric Wright Construction, John Wilson: “Tower Wharf was the first office scheme to start on site at Wirral Waters so it needed to set a benchmark for sustainability within the multibillion pound development.

“Part of the ethos of the regeneration is to create opportunity while reducing the environmental impact of economic growth.

with those goals and achieving BREEAM ‘Excellent’ was one of the stipulations of the ERDF funding.”

Thermal performance While Tower Wharf has been constructed on brownfield former dockland, managing the environmental impact of the scheme was paramount from the outset, with ecological reports carried out to assess the flora and fauna at the site.

The largely glass facades provide stunning views across the waterfront and also maximise natural light, reducing the reliance on electrical lighting within the offices and creating a feeling of space for the high occupancy building.

The thermal implications of this aesthetic approach also had to be carefully incorporated into the design. Extensive thermal modelling and daylight calculations were carried out to inform design of both the fabric of the building and the lighting and that attention to detail is instantly recognisable in the scheme’s appearance.

Brise soleil have been incorporated onto a single facade, to reduce solar gain on the south facing side of the building and lesson the cooling load requirements.

These blinds feature specialist heat reflective fabric that maximises heat during the winter and reduces solar gain in the summer, along with perforations that ensure that the vistas are maintained despite the window coverings.

Heating and cooling The building has been designed to provide an entirely controlled environment in terms of heating and cooling with no natural ventilation.

Each of the scheme’s four floors has been divided into four zones, future proofing the offices to enable different areas to be heated and cooled individually. However, the call

centre operator that has leased the entire building will utilise three storeys as open plan, high occupancy contact centre spaces, with offices on the top floor. As a result, each floor will be treated as a single ‘comfort’ zone.

John explains: “Because of the open plan layout and the high occupancy levels, creating different comfort zones on a single floor could potentially see heating and cooling conflicting and wasting energy.

“Instead, a highly efficient VRF (variant refrigerant flow) system has been specified using air source heat pumps to provide all the energy requirements for both the heating and cooling.”

At the heart of Tower Wharf’s energy efficiency is its building services installation, with an efficient heating and cooling system, controlled and monitored by a programmable BMS (building management system).

The BMS has been designed to enable the building’s facilities team to monitor inputs, outputs, directories, alarms and plots on a touch screen unit that interfaces with all plant and sensors in the building.The system will enable the occupier to adjust operating times and adjust controller parameters, and monitor alarms, but can be configured for security to ensure that only authorised personnel can alter settings.

John continues: “The system logs and monitors the building services aligned to the occupier’s needs and all data is accessible as graphs.

“What this means for the long-term efficiency of the building is that any faults or

Greenhouse Due to the high occupancy levels, the cooling load for the building is significant and heat recovery has been built into the system via VRF fan coil units on each floor. A total of eight Mitsubishi air conditioning roofmounted condenser units have been installed for the building, each powered by a dedicated air source heat pump.

Two heat recovery air handling units have also been installed on the roof and these had to be designed in a low height, double decker configuration to conform to planning requirements.

Two gas fired boilers have also been installed to provide the energy for the central core radiators and the domestic hot water supply is heated by a further two gas fired water heaters.

The high levels of natural light coming into the building during sunlight hours reduce the amount of electric light needed within Tower Wharf and a lighting system made up almost entirely of low wattage LED fittings builds on this energy efficient profile. A wide range of LED fittings have been used across the building, including ceiling panels and spotlights, emergency lighting and feature lighting. All fittings in circulation areas are linked to a presence detectors, and both presence and absence detection has been installed for the office areas in line with BREEAM requirements alongside daylight sensors that control dimming in window areas when levels of natural light are sufficient.

In addition to prioritising low energy consumption, the building has also been designed to reduce the amount of energy required from the grid with a solar PV installation linking high quality roof-mounted panels with two transformerless inverters with a combined 25kW capacity. Once again, the building’s south facing position has influenced this element of the design, with an installation positioned to maximise the available solar energy to provide an estimated output of around 22,500kWh over the course of a year, which, if not utilised by the building demand, is fed directly back into the grid.

John summarises: “Completion of Tower Wharf is a significant milestone in the ambitious regeneration programme at the Mersey Waters Enterprise Zone. It represents the start of a new era for the dockland location and a commitment to creating a more sustainable built environment to support Liverpool’s future prosperity.”

L

ed by GRAHAM Construction’s London and South East team, the £20m contemporary mixed-use development for Bellway Homes replaces a derelict former industrial property located next to Chiswick Park and overlooks the Gunnersbury Triangle nature reserve. The haven of woodland features ponds and meadows and is run by the London Wildlife Trust, providing a pleasant outlook from the apartments’ balconies.

The development comprises two buildings of six and nine storeys respectively, with 124 homes in a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments which have all been designed with a high level of detail to the build quality, finishes and fixtures.

Customer appeal Rob Joyce, GRAHAM Construction’s London Office Director, comments: “The London residential market is hotter than ever and, given the increasing confidence in the economy, seems set to persist. However, the scope for new developments is severely restricted by the continued shortage of potential sites and a lack of both materials and manpower, which will only continue.

“While many building materials suppliers can increase production relatively quickly to meet demand, training workers takes time.

So, if developers are to benefit from the unprecedented level of demand for housing, new thinking – and initiatives – in this area are needed soon. Meanwhile, innovative forms of tendering that capitalise on competing contractors’ scale, knowledge and experience of the industry can pay dividends.”

For Bellway, customer appeal was paramount to the development’s views and surroundings – in particular the nearby nature reserve – which were major selling points. For GRAHAM Construction, however, it was looking inward to the detail of the construction process itself that was the key to managing costs and the project’s overall success, while still maintaining

the development’s design concept. For example, the specification of the buildings’ facades were changed in the early stages of construction: instead of glass-reinforced concrete cladding, an innovative architectural concrete cladding system was recommended to provide a better quality of finish while delivering 22% cost savings. In addition, the floor-to-floor heights were reduced slightly, allowing site levels to be raised.This meant less spoil had to be removed while keeping the overall building height within planning limits, and also enabled the complete

omission of a retaining wall along a railway boundary without affecting residents.

Rob adds: “Being open to considering alternative materials can also help – we recommended a different cladding material at Chiswick which made a substantial cost saving while safeguarding quality and appearance. More modern methods of construction, such as increasing the use of pre-fabrication and producing large components such as bathrooms off site, can also help in terms of manpower, materials and quality assurance.”

Voice of the Industry In 2008, the UK concrete industry committed to a Sustainability Construction Strategy and a key commitment was to contribute to a low carbon built environment

Concrete and the Carbon Challenge Guy Thompson explains how The Concrete Centre responds to the challenges and many enquiries about the sustainability performance of concrete and how the industry is committed to a holistic measure of sustainability thus enabling designers and specifiers to produce evermore sustainable solutions.

ince the announcement of the UK Government’s 2020 target for reducing carbon emissions, the decision making processes in design and construction have seen some dramatic changes.

The 2014 Sustainability Performance report, due to be launched at the Concrete and Masonry Pavilion at Ecobuild 2016, details industry progress in reducing the overall CO2 emissions associated with concrete production. In the seven years since the industry published its first report, there has been an 11% improvement in energy efficiency and a 13% reduction in carbon intensity. 2014 data resulted in 76.3kg of CO2 per tonne of concrete, based on the standardised mix.The target for 2020 is to reduce this figure further to 71.8kg of CO2 per tonne, which equates to an overall 30% reduction from the 1990 baseline.

Concrete is a mix of materials, its CO2 emissions are affected by their production, from processes such as cement manufacture, transportation and a range of other criteria.

The cement sector is a major component of the embodied energy in concrete, and have continued to achieve improvements in energy efficiency.The embodied carbon of cement has been reduced through the use of wastederived fuels. Some 44% of the fuels the cement industry use are derived from waste or by-products reducing the use of carbon intensive fossil fuels.

The embodied CO2 can be further lowered by the use of cementitious additions derived from other industries.These include fly ash from power stations and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) from the iron and steel industry. In 2014, 26.2% of all cementitious materials used were byproducts; the target set for 2020 is 35%.

After nearly 30 years as an architect, Guy Thompson joined The Concrete Centre as Head of architecture, housing and sustainability.

The industry has a very clear vision to reduce both embodied CO2 within its own manufacture and operational CO2, through the sustainable use of concrete products in the built environment. In 2008, the UK concrete industry committed to a Sustainability Construction Strategy and a key commitment was to contribute to a low carbon built environment.The strategy also sets targets, for indicators relating to waste reduction, responsible sourcing, water, wellbeing, and biodiversity amongst others.

The original initiative focused more on those aspects that were within the concrete industry’s control – in other words, the cradle-to-factory-gate impacts of production. In 2012, in response to the European Commission’s drive towards greater resource efficiency, the UK concrete industry broadened its strategy to include the impact of the material post production.

Now, this has extended still further with a series of resource efficiency action plans (REAPs), involving close collaboration with stakeholders, contractors and those responsible for projects to the end of service life with the objective to deliver a more holistic approach to measuring and demonstrating whole-life product stewardship.

Implementation of the Water Policy will improve understanding of the amount of water consumed and demonstrate where measures have been implemented to reduce consumption, ensure the use of the most sustainable water sources and maintain water quality.

Based on this, the Sustainable Concrete Forum is developing specific indicators for the measurement of sustainability performance and target setting, as per the Concrete Industry Sustainable Construction Strategy 2020 commitment made in 2012.

The concrete industry is currently investing in generic Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and BIM guidance, to help designers harness the sustainability credentials of concrete on a credible basis from the earliest design stage of building and infrastructure projects.The Mineral Products Association published the first of these in 2013, declaring the lifecycle environmental impact of UK-factory produced cement.

This has paved the way for the production of generic EPDs for precast concrete products, ready-mixed concrete and mortar, which will provide a sound basis for project environmental or carbon assessments.

With regard to BIM, Government legislation for implementation of level 2 for government projects in 2016 has galvanized development and implementation.

For products, the formatting of BIM product data templates (PDT) is key. Each PDT aims to anticipate the information sought by every party – from specification through operations to decommissioning and replacement. When a manufacturer completes a PDT it becomes a Product Data Sheet (PDS) – a ‘digital’ description of the product. It is envisaged that some or all EPD data fields will become part of PDTs and hence PDSs – the digital description – will contain environmental impact data.

The Concrete Centre provides guidance to enable designers to specify sustainable concrete whilst recognising that embodied carbon reduction is but a small part of the solution for the provision of sustainable construction when measured over its lifetime, when taking into account energy savings from thermal mass and the climate change protection provided.

They can be used to divide buildings such as: entertainment complexes into compartments, close openings in compartment walls or ceilings, or to close open compartment shafts – such as escalators or stairwells. They can also provide protection to atria and lift lobbies and offer boundary protection to prevent vertical fire and smoke spread or building proximity issues.

Assured performance in public spaces Fire and smoke curtains can help designers to meet stringent fire safety requirements in public entertainment and retail premises while retaining large open-plan spaces, says Coopers Fire.

laces of public entertainment often showcase the skill of architects designing landmark buildings, and commonly feature large open-plan designs – which often incorporates a multi-storey atria with multiple escalators and complex architectural features.

Such buildings must meet stringent fire safety requirements which aim to protect the lives of occupants by ensuring a safe means of escape.

Used in place of traditional compartmentation, smoke and fire curtains offer a greater flexibility. Active fire and smoke curtain barrier assemblies comprise technologically advanced, fire-resistant fabric barriers. Fire curtains are intelligent fire safety systems that can interact with a building’s alarm panel or building management system (BMS). They remain invisibly retracted until activated by an alarm or a detector signal – at which time they descend safely to their operational position

Places of public entertainment must meet stringent fire safety requirements which aim to protect the lives of occupants

Coopers Fire has installed smoke and fire curtains in a number of shopping complexes around the world. Coopers Fire manufactured, installed, and commissioned some 300 SmokeStop smoke barriers for Bluewater.

Designed to fit the shopping mall’s vaulted ceiling, curved features and critical evacuation points, these formed part of a smoke containment strategy to protect the shopping mall’s means of escape from smoke migration and allows for a safe evacuation.

The use of Coopers fire curtains to provide a firebreak around escalators is illustrated by its fire curtain solution for the new Topshop and Topman store in Oxford. Coopers Fire installed an L-shaped, open FireMaster Concertina fire curtain around the two-way escalator, connecting the ground floor and basement of the store. Once deployed, the FireMaster Concertina creates a ‘virtual wall’ around the escalator providing 240 minutes of integrity – in accordance with BS EN 1634-1: 2008.

Coopers Fire also developed a smoke curtain system to protect the open-plan atrium at the SSE Hydro entertainment venue, in Scotland. The system provides a nonintrusive method of controlling smoke migrating from the lower floors of the atrium. Coopers Fire also provided a fire curtain barrier system to protect the uninsulated glazing installed above the atrium’s reception area.

Coopers Fire has also provided smoke curtains to protect Sydney Opera House. Working in conjunction with the building’s state-of-the-art, mechanical, air handling systems to provide a fully integrated smoke control strategy.

SmokeStop smoke curtains were developed to deploy from the ceiling to protect the auditoriums from smoke.

Open cell vs closed cell polyurethane foam The application of closed cell polyurethane foams for building insulation has been around for over 30 years, but recently the availability of an open cell option has come onto the market. Architects, specifiers and building consultants may well be confused as to the merits of these different systems.

T

he British Urethane Foam Contractors Association, the trade association representing installers of polyurethane foam, has predominantly represented the closed cell industry but recognises that the open cell alternative has different benefits.

A closed cell sprayed or injected polyurethane foam material provides one of the highest insulation values commercially available. It also helps to achieve excellent structural stability for a building, adhering to the building substrate and setting quickly to form a rigid layer.

For this reason, it is widely used for roof insulation and strengthening as well as cavity wall insulation and stabilisation, which is particularly important where the wall ties are failing.

Air leakage through the cavity can be reduced to zero. With greater thermal performance and reduced air leakage, polyurethane foam outperforms all other forms of cavity fill.

The polyurethane foam moulds itself to the fabric of the building, sealing out draughts and reducing air leakage. It is increasingly important to provide structural integrity to buildings, particularly as weather patterns are becoming more erratic.

Closed cell foams are resistant to driving rain meaning that the material stays dry with no loss of thermal properties. The insulant can help act as a barrier to prevent flood waters from entering the building through the walls. The British Board of AgrĂŠment certification approves this insulant for cavity walls in all exposure zones.

closed cell it will not absorb water and bonds directly to the substrate with no voids or joints for condensation or cold bridging. Closed cell foams which achieve a Class 1 fire rating when tested to BS476 Part 7 are available. Or, where non-Class 1 materials are used on internal applications these must be covered by plasterboard, or a similar thermal barrier.

Conversely, open cell polyurethane foams which have entered the market in recent years do not have the high insulation properties associated with the closed cell materials, which is a distinct disadvantage if trying to save space. They do not have the same fire performance as closed cell, so they should never be left exposed; they have no structural strength to stabilise roofs or walls and are widely marketed to be applied directly onto nonbreathable membranes. This practice should be treated with a high degree of caution as interstitial condensation could occur in the foam, next to roof timbers.

However, they are better suited for their enhanced sound attenuation properties.

Open cell foam is also useful in situations which require more air and vapour into a building’s interior.

When choosing a BUFCA registered installer, customers can be assured of the highest standards of quality and service.

Installers are required to abide by the Association’s Code of Professional Practice which aims to further good technical and professional conduct and promotes sound relationships between members and their customers. A survey is carried out before installation to check that the building fabric is sound, with any necessary rectification works carried out.

There is a 25-year insurance warranty which BUFCA installer members can offer for domestic injected polyurethane cavity wall insulation projects.The warranty offers reassurance to customers and becomes effective if there is a fault with the installation or the product and the installer or product manufacturer has ceased to trade.

The BUFCA warranty is available for installations funded as part of Energy Company Obligation or Green Deal Home Improvement Funded work. Other domestic and commercial jobs can also be considered, subject to prior approval by the insurers.

Architects found to have breached the ARB’s Code may be removed or suspended from the Register

As a RIBA-appointed member of the Professional Conduct Panel, Solicitor David Brown is often involved in appraisal team work or is part of a hearing panel. Here, he discusses the workings of the two, and sets out his own observations as to how to minimise the risk of complaints and how to best deal with complaints, if one cannot be avoided.

complaint or dispute regarding performance is very different from a complaint about professional conduct.A complaint about performance should be resolved by the professional’s own complaint’s procedures, or one of the ADR procedures. If negligence is being alleged, insurers should be informed and their instructions followed.

In the UK, complaints against a registered architect may also be made to the Architects Registration Board (ARB).Architects found to have breached the ARB’s Code may be removed or suspended from the Register which means that they can no longer use the title ‘Architect’. If a member is sanctioned by the ARB for unacceptable professional conduct or serious professional incompetence, a RIBA Hearing Panel has the discretion to impose a similar sanction.

The appraisal team need to consider whether on the evidence provided, a hearing panel could find a breach of Professional Conduct. If so, they can either issue

cautionary advice or decide that there is evidence sufficient to justify the continuation of the investigation by means of a hearing.

Alternatively the appraisal team could decide that the complaint may be dismissed.All decisions of the appraisal team are on a majority basis.

If a complaint goes to a hearing, the panel will consist of one architect member and two lay persons (usually a solicitor and a surveyor).

Until recently there were three lay persons, with one RIBA chartered member as a non voting expert advisor.

The architect member will be informed of the allegations which gave the appraisal team a cause for concern and the member is expected to attend the hearing. The member may bring a solicitor or other advocate or friend to the hearing. The hearing panel may invite the complainants and other witnesses to the hearing but in my experience this would be unusual.

The hearing process is not an adversarial exercise.

The hearing panel conducts a structured approach to determining the sanction.They determine the seriousness of the complaint, the preliminary sanction and possibly adjust for any aggravating or mitigating factors, culpability – intention, reckless knowledge or negligence, and the members personal circumstances. The sanction is then determined which could be: no action, caution, public reprimand, suspension or expulsion.

A common problem in my experience has been the way in which the complaint has been handled in the first place by the architect.

This is sometimes due to the lack of a proper complaints procedure. It is a professional requirement for effective procedures to be in place for dealing promptly and appropriately with disputes or complaints.The professional often needs to sit back and try to be objective about the complaint and it is suggested that consultation with another member of the practice should take place at an early stage.

It is not uncommon for there to have been heated exchange of emails and telephone calls between the complainant and the professional.

This should not happen if the complaint is dealt with correctly.

The professional should remember that even if he considers the complaint to be unjustified and even if the client is withholding money for services, he has an obligation to act in a professional manner and to keep in mind the values of his professional body.

A golden crown of copper alloy produced by one of the world’s leading copper specialists, Aurubis, defines the new cultural centre in the Swedish town of Landvetter.

he building program consists of spaces for cultural activities such as music, dance and drama classes, a public library and an auditorium for 150 people. Designed by Fredblad Arkitekter, the new culture centre is intended as an urban hub for the community.There is always something going on in the building and that activity is clearly visible from the outside as you approach it.

Nordic Royal is an innovative alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, giving a rich golden through-colour that is very stable.The surface retains its golden colour and simply loses some of its sheen as the oxide layer thickens with exposure to the atmosphere, resulting in a protective matt finish. It behaves differently to other copper products over time and does not develop a blue or green patina.

Product in Profile Nordic Royal is produced by Aurubis, part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler. Other copper alloys include Nordic Bronze and Nordic Brass – now also available pre-weathered.

In addition to Nordic Standard copper, other Aurubis Architectural surfaces include Nordic Green and Nordic Blue factory-applied patinas – developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper gives either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment.

Design & Desire The walls are clad with plywood in the same shade as the copper alloy and some interior detailing is in brass, also referencing the exterior copper alloy. The light golden colour glows in the natural light from the skylights. A gigantic staircase leads upwards and offers seating for visitors to the building.

When all floors are open, the stair functions as seating space for the cafe.

The library is by far the most public part of the building, with an exhibition space in its entrance hall, then information desk and children’s library following. The library is basically a large open space, furnished with different functions that can be moved around for future flexibility. The culture school on the first floor is an exciting and playful place with many different things going on. The central communication room offers several different experiences including a meeting place for both students and teachers from the music rooms around, an enclosed space with views outwards and into the dance hall and also a small youth library by the atrium.

When there is a concert on the building’s top floor, visitors continue up the stairs and arrive in a bright foyer with large windows facing the evening sun. The rooftop terrace offers a fantastic view of Landvetter town centre. The auditorium has extensive glazing that can be covered if necessary. The floor plan generates a separate backstage area with storage, facilitating movement of props, musical instruments and so on from the lift directly to the auditorium.

High velocity The facades of four buildings at Velocity Village – one of the largest mixed-use developments in Yorkshire – have been entirely replaced using 14,000m2 of curtain walling from Wicona.

elocity Village occupies a fouracre site and provides more than 600,000ft2 of residential and commercial space in the centre of Sheffield. Designed by Axis Architecture, the extensive facade replacement was carried out by Glassolutions working with main contractor Jessops Construction.

The buildings are all faced in acid-washed concrete, steel and glass in dramatic

contrast to the scheme’s red-brick surroundings and adding sparkle, light and life to the city’s business district.

The architectural style is bold in its contemporary simplicity and has created a stylish landmark which successfully integrates urban living, learning and working environments. Each elevation is almost completely enclosed in Wicona curtain walling to maximise light, with floor-to-

Wicona’s WICTEC 50 SG structural glazing was used on every elevation of the four buildings to replace the original curtain walling which was no longer watertight, and to improve the overall quality of each development.

The facade specification was to create a ‘like-for-like’ frameless glass appearance to mirror the original architectural design.

This was achieved using the WICTEC 50 SG system which features a ‘toggle’ to retain the glazed units within the infill channel.

This option is fast and efficient to install, and delivers a frameless appearance as an alternative to silicone bonding.

Wicona’s WICTEC curtain walling can be used to create vertical and angled facades; sloped and 3D glazed roofs and atria, and other geometric constructions. There is an extensive range of openings for natural ventilation; a wide variety of profiles for optimum creative freedom, and additional options for enhanced burglar and bullet resistance and fire protection, without changing the overall appearance of the facade.

semi-unitised, which allowed the fabrication and assembly of the glazing units off site for faster and more accurate installation – an important benefit as the buildings were occupied throughout the facade replacement. An area of the glazing on the V2 office building was also faceted across seven storeys.

Commenting on the project, Kevin Seers, Director of Axis Architecture said: “The curtain walling was a critical element because these four buildings had such an extensive amount of glazing. We needed to retain the appearance of continuous glass and the original facade design as closely as possible.

“The Wicona facade system was sufficiently flexible and versatile to meet the design criteria and integrated well with the windows and doors. The WICTEC 50 SG curtain walling has successfully and closely reflected the appearance of the original buildings and we are extremely happy with the end result. The glazing is all performing well and each building looks fantastic. The facade replacement has really helped to revitalise the whole development. We would definitely use Wicona’s systems again.”

Bricks, Blocks & Pavers

The installation of the raised beds took place at the final stage of the apartment build, before the site was opened to students

WoodBlocX has helped to create an outdoor space at one of the capital’s most desirable student apartment complexes.

W

ith extensive views of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford One is student accommodation giant, Unite’s latest London development.

The site incorporates more than 1000 flats, state-of-the-art facilities and dedicated areas for study and relaxation. The brief was to provide a practical and functional outdoor space across the building’s rooftop podiums and terrace, which reflected the design and ethos of the rest of the site.

Urban Planters was engaged by the main contractor, Westfield Design & Construction, to provide the landscaping elements for the project. Working closely with Westfield Design and Construction and the architects, and Newham Council planning, a concept was proposed that incorporated large timber planters, seating and walkways for the building’s roof terrace and podium areas.

Railway sleepers were originally planned for the timber element of the build, however, after researching alternative solutions for creating a combination of raised beds and seating, the site’s project manager opted to modify the plans and opted for the WoodBlocX system, which uses pressuretreated FSC pine blocks that fuse together simply using a series of dowels.

WoodBlocX components are manufactured in five different sizes and

work in the same way as bricks. In addition, any capping and angled parts are pre-mitred, which saves installers significant build time and eliminates the need for sawing, drilling and disposing of waste, a huge plus point for large installations.

Using the layout design for the raised beds and seating, WoodBlocX’s design team worked with the plans to calculate the materials needed and used their expertise to advise the team on the design.

The installation of the raised beds took place at the final stage of the apartment build, before the site was opened to students. Cranes were used to lift the pallets of WoodBlocX and other materials to the higher levels and WoodBlocX and Urban Planter’s install teams worked together to build the 10 raised beds and over 20 separate seating areas.

Each bed was built directly on top of a porous plastic layer to ensure adequate drainage once planting was in place; the walkways and remaining spaces were paved using square slabs and edges finished with decorative pebbles. One of the benefits of using the WoodBlocX system is that structures can be built without the need for foundations, larger structures include buttresses every 1.5m and the unique dowel and wedge system combined with the robust pressure treatment of the wood means the materials can withstand large amounts of force.

The final design for the main terrace incorporated six raised beds in total with wide, angular structures to border the edges of the terrace and exterior walls of the building, plus islands placed centrally within the space, each incorporating seating and lighting.

The brief for the planting scheme was to provide plants that were suitable to the conditions of the area, to provide yearround interest and encourage biodiversity.

The planting sourced by Urban Planters from Classiflora used a mixture of herbs, grasses, ferns and shrubs, which provided immediate impact, offering easy maintenance for staff and consistent colour for residents to enjoy throughout the year.

Biomass made perfect sense – especially given the high hot water demands of the club’s two indoor swimming pools

A luxury resort in the Scottish Highlands is set to significantly reduce its emissions and energy costs after swapping its oil-fired heating system for a complete biomass and LPG solution from Flogas.

T

he Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Craigendarroch is now benefitting from energy-efficient, reliable and economical space heating and hot water, thanks to a new 199kW wood-pelletfired biomass boiler with LPG back-up.

Custom-designed to fulfil the yearly two million kilowatt hours (kWh) heating and hot water demands of the resort’s 32 guest suites, as well as its dining and leisure facilities, the new Flogas system has projected annual carbon savings of more than 65%, and the promise of ongoing payments under the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

After extensive refurbishment to turn the former Hilton Hotel in Royal Deeside into a Hilton Grand Vacations Club property, the management team needed to address the ongoing heating requirements of the new luxury timeshare development. Keen to find a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to the existing kerosene-fired system – which was using more than 200,000 litres of oil every year – they investigated biomass as a potential new fuel source. Michael Coletta, Director of business management, Hilton Grand Vacations EMEA, approached leading supplier Flogas for a tailored solution.

He explains: “As a reliable, carbon-neutral fuel, biomass made perfect sense for the

new vacation ownership suites and other facilities – especially given the high hot water demands of our two indoor swimming pools, gym and spa, which make up around 70% of our total consumption.The addition of a dependable LPG back-up system also provides full peace-of-mind for both Hilton Grand Vacations and our guests.”

Neville Scott, National Account Manager at Flogas, adds: “Although often used on its own as a lower cost, more efficient alternative to oil, LPG is also the perfect partner for biomass systems. It allows businesses to move to a renewable energy source, whilst still enjoying the security of a back-up fuel that can cut costs by up to 40% and emissions by up to 50%. As shown by Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Craigendarroch, a biomass/LPG combination is often the ideal way for buildings to break their dependency on oil for the long term, which is why it’s an important part of the total energy service Flogas offers.”

After assessing the site’s exact heating requirements, Flogas specified and installed a 199kW wood pellet boiler, 3,000l buffer tank, pellet storage and chimney stack, which fulfils around 60% of the resort’s annual heat demand. Three existing oil boilers were also converted to LPG to provide reliable back-up when needed and to support the

biomass system during peak season.

Aileen Munro, Lodge and Estate Manager at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Craigendarroch, says: “Our guests’ comfort is the number one priority for all the staff here at the resort, so it’s vital that we can rely on a heating system that delivers, all year round. We opted for the integrated biomass and LPG system from Flogas because it does just that. We’re expecting it to significantly cut our carbon footprint and costs – with projections showing that the change from oil to biomass and LPG will save around 400 tonnes of CO2 a year, as well as the financial benefits that accrue from cheaper fuels. The new system is also eligible for support under the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which will provide us with quarterly, inflation-linked payments over the next 20 years.”

The new biomass system has been installed in a timber-clad cabin on the site of the old kerosene oil tanks. It uses insulated pipes to transport hot water to a plant room approximately 70m away in the main resort building, where the LPG boiler is also located. The on-site LPG tanks have been mounded to ensure they fit unobtrusively with the surroundings, and are refuelled regularly by Flogas’ national LPG delivery network. For ultimate ease, Hilton is also benefiting from the automatic biomass fuel supply service from Flogas Renewables, with sensors in the biomass pellet silo triggering alerts and delivery when supply drops below a certain level.

Lighting Marshalls designed and installed the three Sky Needles, measuring 16, 20 and 26m, on the top of the building

Iconic sculptures light the way As part of a £26m redevelopment of the National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham, now known as the Barclaycard Arena, Marshalls designed and installed three lit columns known as ‘Sky Needles’ for the top of the iconic Midlands venue.

I

n 2014, Architects Broadway Malyan approached Marshalls with a concept for the ‘Sky Needles’ which aimed to create an iconic and instantly recognisable piece of sculpture for the top of the building. The brief also wanted to reinforce the NIA’s identity and brand throughout the city, and help to direct footfall towards and around the arena – emphasising the innovation of the new-look arena, yet also encouraging more visitors to use the new facilities within the venue.

Marshalls is the UK’s leading innovator of lighting, street furniture, hard landscaping

and water management products.

Marshalls’ lighting team worked with the client to produce two 6m prototype columns which were installed onto one of the first floor landings at the NIA. These prototypes were designed to see if the concept would work in terms of light levels and design, and also to gain approval from the Council.

Following the successful trial of the prototypes, Marshalls designed and installed the three Sky Needles, measuring 16, 20 and 26m, on the top of the building.

difficulty in gaining access to the columns for maintenance, Marshalls was tasked with designing and supplying a long term, yet low and easy maintenance proposal for the linear light outputs at the bottom of the columns.

Simple access The final effect of the needles needed to be visible from all around the city, yet sturdy enough to withstand all weather conditions.

To overcome these issues Marshalls’ lighting experts installed fibre optics, with the light sources being housed at the base of each of the columns. By doing so if one of the lights requires replacing then the light source can be changed without having to use personnel access equipment on the roof of the building, which could be potentially dangerous.

Marshalls Street Furniture & Lighting Operations Director, David Townsend said: “The fibre optic light sources were an ideal choice as they produce a brilliant light quality, as well as being easy to maintain and upkeep, which was an essential component of this project.”

Due to the height of the building, to install the Sky Needles a 500 tonne crane was needed to lift the heavy steel columns which had a reach of over 100 metres.

Townsend said: “The installation was particularly challenging, as the crane needed to lift the needles into place could only operate safely in wind speeds of less

than 21 miles per hour (10m/s) which took a lot of time – 24 hours overall, not including lifting.

“Accessing the site and situating the crane also involved the closure of some major roads around the area, which meant that the operation could only occur over a weekend due to the busy nature of the area surrounding the arena.”

David concluded: “The challenging installation period was well worth it as the end result is magnificent, and the client is extremely happy with the outcome.

The galvanised steel tubes which created

the iconic needle shape are durable and low maintenance, and certainly provide a dramatic addition and focal point to the arena. The project is highly bespoke, with each product included within the project being individually designed to fulfil the design criteria – no off-the-shelf products were used at all throughout the development. Marshalls created a truly innovative, yet practical, solution, to what was quite a complicated brief.”

The needles act as a series of lighting sculptures during the evening, being noticeable from all key points and routes

into Birmingham, and during the day time they will double as blades of light which can be seen standing proud on the inner city skyline. This was only achievable due to the height Marshalls were able to achieve with the needles, which ultimately came down to the material’s construction and the method of lighting chosen. The outcome is certainly impressive, with the now iconic sky needles being visible from across the Midland’s city.

Scott Bader to promote its CrysticROOF BBA Premier cold applied GRP roofing system Scott Bader is exhibiting once again at Ecobuild to promote its BBA approved CrysticROOF range of cold-applied, resin-based, glass fibre, reinforced (GRP) roofing systems.

The CrysticROOF product range was developed by Scott Bader specifically for manufacturing flat and pitched roofs, offering a long-lasting, leak free alternative to using more traditional flat roofing materials such as bitumen, felt and lead.

Energy efficient cooling for students at the University of Essex Underfloor systems utilise the plenum beneath a raised floor as the ventilation zone, removing the need for most ceiling-based ducting or pipework. Commonly found in office environments, there has been an increase in use at academic facilities.

With AET Flexible Space systems, fully conditioned air is fed into the plenum by zonal downflow units (CAM), which is then introduced into the space via floor-recessed

fan terminal units or Fantiles – which are easily relocated with the 600 x 600mm raised floor tiles.

The CAM-V units introduce conditioned

air at floor level into the plenum beneath the raised floor and then receive return air at high-level for reconditioning.

This configuration is ideal for easy reconfiguration as there is no division of the plenum into supply-and-return channels.

The system supplied to the Silberrad Centre was a bespoke design comprising four custom CAM units supplying conditioned air at high volume, with lowenergy output to the individual zones.

Conditioned air is introduced into the space using a total of 124 floor-recessed fan terminal units – this project was the first to adopt the standard AET TU4 Fantile, fitted with EC fan technology.

The AET Flexible Space system was specified by consultants Mott MacDonald after initially enquiring as to the feasibility of introducing additional fresh air to the building. After demonstrating the flexibility of the system to the client, they opted for the underfloor air conditioning system to satisfy the client’s requirements for a flexible, and comfortable, indoor environment.

Remmers delivers food grade flooring Hygienic food grade flooring was required to the automated filling and packaging lines at the relocated premises of Nature Delivered. A number of steel structure mezzanines were constructed to maximise space and house new sorting and packing machinery. Each mezzanine level required a complicated matrix of cross falls within the sub-screed and a hard-wearing, hygienic, slip-resistant resin floor finish, with integral perimeter coving. An epoxy damp-proof membrane was required prior to installation of the resin finishes.

Remmers Haftfest Polymer was added to the sand/cement screed to improve its performance characteristics, increasing compressive strength and reducing the potential for drying, shrinkage cracking.

UZIN system used at New Buckland Hospital in Dover Over 6000m2 of flooring at the new Buckland Hospital was installed using UZIN products. A suitable range of EC1 and solvent-free UZIN products were used.

Cracks in the substrate were repaired using UZIN RR 2013 crack repair, UZIN NC 182 rapid and UZIN NC 888 feather coat.The substrate was then protected against residual moisture using UZIN PE 414 DPM. FM 10 smoothing compound was then used, before the floor coverings were installed. UZIN KE 2000 S was used to install the safety flooring, while 3200lm of set in and coved skirting were adhered using Remur tape.

Marmoleum Modular goes zigzag at Neoworks Attracted by the sustainability and vibrancy of Marmoleum Modular, interior designer firm HLW has used an array of colours from Forbo’s new collection to create zigzag designs at the new ‘City Tower in London’ offices of e-commerce company, Neoworks.

HLW was appointed to help transform the interiors into a collaborative environment that would support the way its client worked, reflect the brand and ethos, and provide a space that staff could be proud of.

Forbo’s Marmoleum Modular tiles in pillar box red Bleeckerstreet, summer pudding, pine forest, purple and chartreuse were used to differentiate the key social hub, whilst a more muted palette of greens was installed in quieter, more work-orientated, ‘touchdown’ areas.

Thanks to the new Topshield2 finish, HLW’s client is also benefiting from a longlasting and durable floor covering with an

easy-cleaning and maintenance regime.

Fleur Peck, Associate at HLW commented: “We were keen to find a product that would be easy-to-install, with a colour palette that would bring energy and liveliness into the space. After being introduced to Marmoleum Modular, we knew it would meet our objectives and allow the installation to be more streamlined. The flooring was laid and ready to walk on in under a week!”

ESG brightens up new Tottenham Court Road Station ESG – one of the UK’s largest independent glass processors – has recently continued its work for Transport for London with the second phase of the redevelopment of Tottenham Court Road Tube Station.

Tottenham Court Road Tube Station is currently undergoing a multi-billion pound refit, as part of the new Crossrail link which is due to open in 2018. Initially the entire station was closed at the start of this project,

and is now reopening one section at a time.

Towards the end of 2014 the new ticket office and Oxford Street entrance were reopened to reveal a Daniel Buren-designed – and ESGmanufactured – black and white installation.

Recently the new Centre Point entrance has opened to the public and the walls continue Daniel’s design. For this section of the station the black and white glass has been fused together with colour to create striking geometrical shapes.

ESG supplied over 150m2 of toughened laminate glass, split over more than 200 pieces.

The coloured and black sections of the design were digitally printed and UV cured onto the glass. To ensure maximum ink adhesion to the glass, each panel was treated to an ESG developed preprint wash treatment to remove any unseen dirt and oil. This treatment enables the print to achieve BSI: ISO2409 adhesion standard.

The printing was carried out on 8mm toughened, low iron and then laminated with a white Vanceva interlayer to achieve the background and create the 17.5mm toughened laminated final product. The design has already received plaudits from the public, commenting on how bright and modern the new look station is.

A ‘living’ facade in harmony with nature Over 6268m² of Rockpanel Natural boards have been used to create a facade for a forward-thinking German company.The German-based Brunner family business has expanded – leading to the construction of a brand new facility. Cladding was chosen to reflect the nine metre-high rooms and vaulted ceilings. Corten steel and larch shingles were both shunned in favour of the style and flexibility of the 10mm Rockpanel Natural boards. Anthracite grey Rockpanel Rockclad boards (RAL 7016) were used to clad the bridge between the office building and a heating technology building, providing a contrast with the warm brown tones of the two buildings.

Romag was commissioned to provide highperformance laminated safety glass for a new large tiger enclosure at Lincolnshire Wildlife Park. The installation has been specifically designed to provide a ‘close encounter’ visiting experience, providing high visibility of the animals through glass, whilst being protected by glass strong enough to withstand the power of the large cats. Multi-format polished and unpolished black facade panels were specified for the Consett Academy

Shackerley cladding adds ‘civic quality’ to Consett development Shackerley has supplied over 900m2 of SureClad ceramic granite ventilated facade cladding for the Consett Academy and the adjoining Consett Leisure Centre, providing premium quality external finishes for this £44m regeneration project.

hilst these new facilities have been constructed as a single building, ceramic granite, in different colourways and surface textures, has helped to give each part of the development its own clear identity.

For the Consett Academy, Seymour Harris, was the appointed architect for the main contractor Carillion. Multiformat polished and unpolished black facade panels, from one of Shackerley’s most popular ceramic granite ranges, were specified for this project. Installed in a ‘broken bonded’ configuration, the cladding forms a key design element of the main frontage.

SMS Maintenance Services installed six industrial BoilerMag XTs in an office complex in Glasgow.Taking water samples from the heating system, SMS’ engineers identified problems with the water quality.The fan coils were not performing efficiently, which highlighted a considerable amount of corrosion and magnetite in the system. Climatherm improves energy performance of over 250 solid walled homes An external wall insulation (EWI) system from adhesive specialist Bostik, has been used to improve the energy performance and aesthetic appearance of 252 Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) owned properties on the Waldgrave Estate.

Installation of Bostik’s Climatherm system on the solid walled homes is estimated to reduce the U-value of the properties from approximately 2.1 W/m2K to 0.3 W/m2K in accordance with current UK Building Regulations, while saving tenants up to £260-a-year in fuel bills.

Forrest was appointed as main contractor on the project, with the Climatherm system being distributed through Bostik’s approved distribution partner, CCF – a division of Travis Perkins.

Approximately 22,500m2 of Climatherm EWI was installed on the Waldgrave Estate project, using graphite-enhanced expanded

polystyrene insulation and a bespoke, cream coloured acrylic render finish, manufactured specifically for this project.

Funding to improve the properties was provided by Renewables and Energy Efficiency in Community Housing (REECH) – a European Regional Development Fund financed project aimed at improving energy efficiency in some of the Liverpool City Region’s most deprived communities.

The Climatherm system can be tailored to individual property requirements and comprises three key components – insulation, mesh reinforced base coat and finish. These can be selected from a range

of products that all meet Bostik’s strict performance requirements, allowing greater flexibility in both price and performance in comparison with other EWI systems.

In addition, by offering an EWI system through distribution channels, Bostik provides customers with a system where the pricing is completely transparent, while lead times and onsite storage requirements are significantly reduced.

Project delays in UK construction continue to worsen

According to the latest construction industry data, 60% of projects were delivered late in the past year. This alarming performance is in sharp contrast to figures released by the Portakabin Group, which has now completed 99.7% of projects on time and on budget since 2003.

Transformational paving Interpave has substantially updated its case study on the recent completion of public realm regeneration, at the Brownfield Estate. Brownfield includes Modernist Architect Ernö Goldfinger’s listed, ‘brutalist’ concrete high-rise blocks.

Before regeneration, a key issue with the estate was the variable quality and character of the urban realm, which was ill defined with uncertainty about identifying public or private spaces and fronts or backs of buildings. With standard width carriageways, very wide pavements and no defensible space to frontages, the streetscape was bleak.

This regeneration project, designed by PRP for Poplar HARCA, works within the general layout of the refurbished and new infill buildings and adopted streets. The aim is to unify disparate elements of the site using a simple palette of hard landscape materials, developing a language that unites the neighbourhood. Wherever possible, multi-use streets and spaces are developed – bold and contemporary in character – using robust

and high quality landscape elements.

The project is characterised by a uniform application of concrete block paving on unadopted areas, with feature paving announcing estate entrances and around key buildings. Here, concrete flags in strong colours are arranged in bands to create a bold linear feel. Then, throughout the scheme silver-grey concrete setts – with enhanced granite surface, adding sparkle – highlight footways, while charcoal setts identify private amenity space. Edges and transformations are defined by enhancedfinish concrete kerbs, some laid flush and others raised.

GEZE doors help create a dramatic new entrance at Theatre Royal Glasgow

A stunning new elliptical foyer extension has brought the Theatre Royal Glasgow firmly into the 21st Century. GEZE UK was commissioned to install automatic sliding doors alongside a further set of automatic sliding doors to access the city’s only public roof terrace. Two new entrances were created and GEZE’s Slimdrive SL NT single operators with ISO doors and pocket screens were specified to create entrance lobbies. REHAU TOTAL70 shows its versatility in parallel window application

Devon-based fabricator Interframe has for the first time manufactured parallel hinged, sliding windows using only REHAU TOTAL70C chamfered profile. The windows were specified because they could provide almost twice the free airflow of top hung or casement windows. Parallel windows increase air flow all the way around so fresh air is drawn in at the bottom and warm, stale air is expelled at the top. Parallel windows don’t impact on the look of a building’s facade and maintain a consistent reflective view. At Steiner Academy, all windows, doors and screens installed were coloured in a smooth RAL 7016 grey foil.

– a new qualifying route What is the MCIAT Professional Assessment?

The MCIAT Professional Assessment is a flexible, rigorous, robust and quality assured qualifying process, based on performance and designed to recognise the diversity of Architectural Technology.

Candidates must provide an in-depth critical analysis clearly summarising their professional experience. This should be a reflective report and should refer to challenges and successes encountered whilst working on projects and how any issues were resolved.

Applicants should also undertake a self-evaluation highlighting their strengths and weaknesses in relation to their area(s) of practice.

The Professional Assessment process is based on four core competencies: • Designing • Managing • Practising • Developing (self)

Who can apply for the MCIAT Professional Assessment?

Any applicant working in or on, for example, academia, general practice, component design, refurbishment, small residential projects, large commercial projects etc within Architectural Technology, should be able to apply their own experience to the Professional Assessment process, but they must hold one of the following membership grades: ACIAT, TCIAT or profile candidate.

Each application will be assessed on its merit. However, each applicant will need to demonstrate a sufficient level of knowledge and understanding and professional competence/experience in relation to their sphere/s of practice and demonstrate to the Institute they can meet the expectations of a Chartered Architectural Technologist, MCIAT.

How much does it cost?

To apply for the Professional Assessment, applicants are required to pay £300 for the assessment of the application and the Professional Assessment Interview.

Harrow School has IAAF-standard running track The re-built athletics facilities at Harrow School included an IAAF-standard running track, facilities for long jump, high jump, discus and all the main athletics events, plus a water jump for the steeplechase and an area for the pole vault event – a relatively rare feature in UK school athletics facilities.

Hauraton SPORTFIX components installed at the Harrow School sports complex include; drainage channels around the edge of the running track, sand traps and soft kerb edging around the long jump pit and a water jump kit on the steeplechase track.

At any time in the UK, rain can stop play and on tennis hard courts the build-up of water can take some time to run away if attention has not been paid to the surface water drainage requirement. At Harrow School tennis courts this is not a problem as a discreet drainage channel run located just below the net efficiently drains away any excess rainwater.

Over the years Hauraton has built-up a fund of knowledge, second-to-none, of how to drain sports areas – be they soccer grounds, athletic tracks or tennis courts.
